ON THE COVER BRIAN GRUBB The St. Johns River is the longest in

of calm water with green, swampy

Florida at 310 miles. It’s full of airboats,

backgrounds along the shoreline. There

fishermen, giant alligators, camping and

were more alligators than we like, but

sight seeing. Of all the things to do (not-

thankfully none of them got to fulfill their

so-strangely-enough), it is extremely rare

wakeskate appetite. While Wake Journal

to see anybody actually wakeboarding,

Issue 9 has quite a few shots from the

much less wakeskating. A perfect location historic St. Johns River, none stood out for the 2009 Hyperlite shoot, we navigated

like this one of wakeskater, Brian Grubb.

It takes a little more effort to ride in the chillier waters of the great Northwest. You don’t always have a nice, warm dock or convenient cleat to tie your boat to either. Dealing with the tides and buoys is the only way to go. “Boating to the boat” is all part of the Northwest wakeboarding experience. It’s one that the Ennen brothers have well figured out. 7

I think Palma would like to avoid a collision with an alligator just as much as the alligator would like to avoid a collision with Palma.

“Flash Gordon” is always a unique situation of bribing a friend to get beat up in the tube while holding the flash. It always sounds like a great idea…Until you get out there. Each time the rider hits the wake, it feels like your face is being smashed by a bat made of water, over and over again. Add extremely cold water, and it stings that much worse. Thanks for dealing with it Kevin Henshaw! Dustin and I appreciate it.

One more reason why it might suck to be “Flash Gordon.” 20

Jimmy LaRiche ST. JOHNS RIVER, FL

At the ripe age of 21, Jimmy LaRiche is a rider at the forefront of youngins working their way through the ranks and up the wakeboarding totem pole. Shooting him at the ‘09 Hyperlite shoot, LaRiche would go so big, he’d jump out of the frame in my camera. I remember following him in the chase boat and having to back up, so I could try and better anticipate his height off the top of the wake. After readjusting my distance, it still wasn’t enough.
