ON THE COVER

ERIK RUCK

Mix a seasoned wakeboarding pro and the term “old school” together and you’ll get this giant oriental photo on the cover Wake Journal 36, courtesy of Erik Ruck. It’s one of his many throwback moves on a wakeboard that make Ruck one of the most well rounded, respected, and inspiring riders to photograph. While it’s not a double flip, switch 1080 or a combination of both, Ruck has something special that all the young whipping flippers of today don’t… Roots. The Ruck bag of tricks and photography bread crumbs that go along with his impressive career span more than a decade now. From the Full Tilt days with Weddington and Mikacich, Blindside and the Pointless boys, the Hyperlite era, and on to the Ronix family, I’ve been fortunate enough to capture many of those iconic Ruck moments. After you flip through these pages of Wake Journal and soak up the good vibes and nostalgic memories of one wakeboarding’s greatest souls, hopefully you will have been inspired to try a TS front flip… or a method… or an old school oriental like Ruck’s. Don’t just try the new trick of the week every time you go ride. Go try something old for a change, and get to know your roots.

—Joey Meddock

Slob Front Flip To “Timeless” CLEAR LAKE, FL

There is nothing like a good slob front flip to fakie. It’s an all time great wakeboard trick that Thomas Horrell, Scott Byerly and Drew McGukin pioneered. I always loved watching them do that trick. They were the only handful of riders to embrace the front flip family of tricks.

This was down at the Florida Keys for a Tige contest. Although I can’t say riding contests is really my thing anymore, booting off the kicker with a good old mute roll to revert will always be fun.

Sunset Shadows LAKE WILLIS, FL

Danny Harf’s parents house on Lake Willis is where I learned many tricks and where we filmed so much of Incomplete with the Pointless Posse. A lot of insane tricks have gone down on its waters and I’m stoked to have been a part of it. 18

The best part about living on Clear Lake is the close proximity we are to downtown. Downtown O-town is where you can always find a few members of the wakeboard community... generally around 2am.

This was one of my career highlights for Billabong’s Out Of The Pond team video. The soccer goal was really fun yet pretty nerve racking on that first hit. After I got my line down, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I got to session it for like two hours all by myself. So fun. 20
