“My description of The Method goes like this. Approach the wake heel-side, pop, let go with your front hand and rotate your front knee in front of your back knee (body position like a backside shifty). Then, grab behind your front foot or in between your feet. While grabbing the board, continue to pull your body and rotate the base of your board, kicking out your back leg so all the babes in the boat can see your base!” — Mike Ennen

Ben Greenwood LAKE POWELL, AZ

“The Method to me is one of those tricks that you can either do, or do

VIDEO

really well. In saying that, there was a time when I was unable to do a Method. I had a mean backside shifty, and an ok melon grab, but putting them together wasn’t happening very well for me. My biggest influence on learning a Method the proper way was riding back in upstate NY where all the guys I rode with could do really solid “snowboardy” looking Methods, and I couldn’t. It bothered me because it looked so cool and I had to work on it. I think the goal of my whole riding crew up there was to make it look like Greg Nelson’s Method as much as possible. The thing about the Method is that it’s unlike any other trick and you cannot do one exactly like someone else. If you showed a silhouette of any pro-rider doing a nose grabbed Crow 5, it might be hard to distinguish who it is. But a silhouette of a Method, everyone would be able to pick out which rider it is.” — Ben Greenwood 8

Aaron Rathy JOHNS LAKE, FL

“A Method is one of the most individual tricks you can do. It takes a perfect blend of technique and style. It’s one of those tricks you could always do better. My favorite is Vandall’s in the Natural Born Thrillaz video. That’s what I’ve always wanted mine to look like.” — Aaron Rathy

always make me think that I wasn’t tweaking it enough. And they would say, “you’re only doing a melon.” It would piss me off so bad. But now that you are putting me in the Method issue of Wake Journal and I was in The Method contest earlier this year, it confirms they were just giving me shit. — Shane Bonifay 12

Chad Sharpe LAKE HIAWASSEE, FL

“I love doing Methods because of how you can pull the board with the grab. They’re tricky because of the direction you go off the wake. It’s really easy to butcher one even if you got it on lock. It’s an old school trick that’s been around forever and will never go out of style.” — Chad Sharpe

Nico von Lerchenfeld LAKE MINNEHAHA, FL

“The Method is one of the most beautiful grabs you can do riding a board. A lot of inspiration comes from snowboarders like Terje Haakonsen and Nicolas Müller, who brought this grab to a level of perfection that is hard to reach. It’s a trick you can do again and again, trying to bend yourself and poke that grab a little more, with tons of fun every single time.” VIDEO

JD Webb LAKE ARIANA, FL

“The Method has always been my favorite grab since I have started wakeboarding. I think the main reason I like the Method is how much you can really tweak it out to make it your own. There are so many guys in our industry that have such sick Methods but everyone of them does something a little different to make the trick their own. I really enjoy when you are shooting with someone to really push this trick to see how far you can tweak it to try and get the best photo possible. There are a lot of good Methods out there, but for me I really enjoy watching Randall take his way out into the flats… and be able to hold the grab the entire time. It really inspires me to keep trying to take mine bigger.” — JD Webb

Jeff McKee ST. JOHNS RIVER, FL

“To me, a solid Method is the ultimate test of style in any board sport. It’s what separates you from the “gymnasts” or “huckers” identifying you as a true board-rider. It takes years to learn and even more to perfect, but at the end of the day, it’s one of the most rewarding tricks to do on any type of board. It’s timeless in every sport which is why I’ll never retire. Plus, it’s a great way to milk the sponsors for photo incentives. Haha.” — Jeff McKee

Clay Fletcher CLEAR LAKE, FL

The Method, why do I do it? It’s because of my influences. I’ve seen it in all board sports as a sick looking grab. I like seeing someone do a good Method because it shows a great deal of control. It ain’t easy to make that trick look effortless. I look like I’m ripping a big fart when I do mine.” — Clay Fletcher

“I fell in love with the Method watching Terje Haakonsen in the movie Subject Haakonsen. It’s such a challenging grab to make look right. One of the most fun things about the Method’s uniqueness is how different they look, from rider to rider, from sport to sport.” — Parks Bonifay

Shaun Murray LAKE WHIPPOORWILL, FL

“Is it a grab or a move?” Someone just asked me at a contest this summer. Good question because I had to think about it for a second. But after deliberating in my own mind... ‘It’s a grab, but has to be done with a particular movement,’ was my answer that day. How that movement is done and exactly where the board is grabbed is the riders own interpretation/art. When doing a Method, you can go quickly from a good Method to a grabbed back scratcher, which I would tell you to try and avoid. The more the board’s bottom is pushed at the boat (by pushing your back foot around), the better it looks in my humble opinion. Some say not to grab outside your front foot, but on some occasions, they can still look good (if not awesome). My first Method inspiration came from Jamie Lynn, a snowboarder I grew up watching. Some of the best Methods in the world of wakeboarding came from Keith Lyman, JD Webb, Parks and Chris O. It’s one of the simpler looking tricks, yet pretty allusive to many. Go find yours.” 22

Brenton Priestley CLEAR LAKE, FL

“Doing a Method for me is all about how it feels. It’s a rad trick to play around with. You can do it big, wake-to-wake, off the double-up or a kicker, and it always feels good. My influences on the Method came from the three method kings: Chris O’Shea, Benny Greenwood, and The Vandall. From all other areas of board sports, no matter what board you ride… as long as it’s sideways, everyone knows what a good Method looks like.” — Brenton Priestley

“This is one of my favorite photos of all time. Not only is it a good action shot of a Method, but the background is insane!! A Method grab isn’t necessarily hard, it’s just hard to make it look good! One of my biggest influences of seeing someone do a Method would be Terje Haakonsen on a snowboard.” — Shawn Watson
