Most of the time, shooting flash photos

BULL SHOALS, AR

is a pain in the butt. The image is

usually worth it in the end, but it’s a mission to get everything lined up. The flash may not pop for some reason, or more often, the person holding the flash wasn’t paying attention and pointing it the wrong direction. Whatever the problem may be, something always malfunctions during a flash shoot. On this shoot, we got lucky. The sun was shinning its perfect afternoon light and we were just about to head home when the one little cloud in the sky decided to sit directly in front of the sun. We could could see sun on the other side of the big lake but didn’t have enough time to get there. We only had about 15 minutes until the sun was gone behind a mountain. We just scrambled around and went for it. I had a specific trick in mind so it was probably the easiest flash shoot ever. You can see me smirking. We went down the lake once, got the shot straight away, whipped back into the boat without even getting my hair wet and called it a day. I wish they all shoots went down that easy.

The details a flash can bring are insane. Bad light, clouds, fog… you name it. Flash can make any photo look unreal. I like this photo in particular because we had perfectly good light but used the flash anyway. Goes to show you that flash can add something special even when you don’t need it.

Using the strobe is my favorite way to get wakeboarding photos. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, it just makes the photo that much better. I like shooting right at dusk so without that flash popping, you can’t get that super vibrant and artsy photo I look for. VIDEO

Shooting with the flash brings the rider and photographer together on the same page (literally!). With the flash only firing one at a time, it requires a skill in timing to know when to shoot. It’s not like sequencing every trick and picking the best frame like shooting in daylight. From the rider’s perspective, you’ll know the exact moments when those shots are taken. Like Trev said on page three, it helps to know if you can move to a different trick or continue to perfect your desired body position. VIDEO

This was one of those days when everyone drove an hour to be at the same place for a sunrise shoot on an overcast morning. The cloudy skies were sure to shut us down... Or so we thought. Once Meddock hooked up the flash and threw Grasman on the tube for human tripod duties, we were able to make the most out of an otherwise VIDEO

but can create all these trippy looking backgrounds. It creates a whole new style in depth of field. With the right photographer, it can produce the most artful of all imagery.

It’s always nice to finish up your day with some Methods against a radiant California sunset. With the way we had the flash set up at the 2012 CWB shoot, it added a ton of depth to the shots and provided a slightly different perspective than usual.

Shooting with flash brings a lot more opportunities to creating unique photos. Even though you mostly use it when the weather is less than ideal, you can also put together crazy images when the weather is cooperating. It brings out great color and detail. I especially like all the water drops in the air popping out through the artificial light. VIDEO
