Wake Tech Community College Annual Report 2006-2007

Go Anywhere

From the President Start Here. Go Anywhere. Ambitious? Absolutely! At Wake Tech we truly believe that with quality instruction, practical learning experiences, and the right kind of support students can start strong and go wherever they want to go. Maybe it’s a whole new career, a completely different kind of work that calls for new skills. Or the specialized training that turns a routine job into an engaging, challenging one (and boosts salary in the process). Maybe it’s the completion of a high school education that was put on hold, or just the beginning of a journey of scholarship, advanced degrees, professional recognition. We want to prepare students for the destination of their dreams. Our goal is to offer educational options that serve the needs of every student – and serve as stepping stones to that next level. In 2006-07 Wake Tech made a lot of changes, reshaping courses and programs to meet students’ needs more effectively and starting new ones in response to new needs and heightened demand. We forged connections with educational institutions, locally and across the world, to open doors to academic and cultural opportunity. We reconfigured physical space and fine-tuned infrastructure, preserving our traditions as we embrace innovation. We held our first summer camps for middle and high school students, introducing them to the excitement of electronics and engineering. For the grown-ups, there was Disney! Hundreds of businesspeople came to Wake Tech’s Main Campus for the Disney Institute’s unique professional development program. In the spring, we gave awards to local businesses who demonstrated their support for worker training. We launched a unique associate degree program in Simulation and Game Development – one of only a few in the nation – in response to the growing number of digital game companies in the Triangle. We entered into a groundbreaking agreement with East Carolina University that, for the first time, allows our Associate in Applied Science graduates to transfer and earn a bachelor’s degree. We broke ground for another building at our Northern Wake Campus site, and went before Wake County Commissioners to ask for funding to expand our facilities even further. We visited a university in China and started a dialogue to establish an exchange program for faculty and students. All of our initiatives are designed to help students find the educational focus that’s right for them. Their success is our success. As changes and challenges continue, Wake Tech’s goal is to keep growing in step with the community and providing the services and opportunities that are truly needed. We want to help students get off to a good start here at Wake Tech, knowing it will help them go anywhere they want to go.

A Winning Year Wake Tech employees also supported the Triangle United Way, contributing $13,830 through our annual employee campaign. In November, we broke ground for the 4th building in Phase 1 of construction at our Northern Wake Campus. We also announced that the Northern Wake Campus will, when certified, meet all of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, becoming the first totally “green” college campus in the nation. Wake Tech unveiled the most advanced digital game lab in the Carolinas in December, featuring 27 Alienware computers. We also hosted our first DACUM (Developing a Curriculum) workshop, allowing faculty to work with industry leaders in developing our new Simulation and Game Design program. Winter brought a $25,000 endowed scholarship to help African-American students enter nursing school. Former Wake County resident Rebecca Payne established the scholarship to honor 105-yearold Cary resident Maude Griffis, who cared for five generations of her family. January also marked the final print edition of Wake Tech’s newsletter and the beginning of its transition to an online news site called Connections. Lt. Governor Bev Perdue was the guest speaker at Wake Tech’s 44th annual commencement exercises. Nearly 1,100 graduates received diplomas and certificates for the 2006-07 school year.

Throughout the summer, our ITS staff worked with deans and other college leaders to implement the new Colleague software now used system wide – a monumental task requiring long hours and outstanding teamwork. Wake Tech was awarded a three-year, $858,000 National Science Foundation grant to establish one of the country’s few Simulation and Game Development associate degree programs. Wake Tech hosted our very first Applied Technologies Exploration Camp (ATEC) for middle and high school students. The week-long camp introduced students to the excitement of electronics and engineering.

Wake Tech’s Culinary Department took its annual Pastry Show up a notch by adding a competition to the event. Eleven students created elaborate displays to showcase their imagination and newly-acquired skills. Local officials, education leaders, and industry professionals joined students’ families and friends to view and taste. Winners won cash prizes and bragging rights!

Our annual February celebration of Black History Month included informative presentations, guest speakers, and special jazz performances.

Summer 2006 also included the formation of an Energy Conservation Committee to promote environmental responsibility and help Wake Tech cut energy costs. Wake Tech was later honored for its efforts, as the recipient of the N.C. Utility Savings Initiative’s Community College Partner Award.

In March, Wake Tech and Business Leader Magazine presented the first-ever Business Champions awards to 26 local companies who have made workers their first priority, creating jobs and offering essential employee training. Credit Suisse received special distinction as Business Champion of the Year for their profound impact on the local workforce.

In October, the Disney Institute visited Wake Tech for the first time with its “Keys to Excellence” professional development seminar for faculty, staff, and the community, reminding us of the importance of going above and beyond what is expected.

Dr. Scott presented a $115 million capital improvement plan to Wake Co. Commissioners, which included repairs on existing buildings and expansion plans for new facilities. Voters would later approve most of the funding in a $92 million bond referendum.

Wake Tech faculty and staff joined in the 2006 Triangle Metro Heart Walk and raised $7,327 to help the American Heart Association fight heart disease and stroke.

In April, Wake Tech and East Carolina University signed an agreement enabling students who earn a two-year Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to transfer and apply it toward a bachelor’s

degree. With the agreement, Wake Tech turned a traditionally “terminal” degree into one that offers options. In May, Dr. Scott embarked on a 12-day economic and academic visit to China with a delegation of North Carolinians. There he signed an historic agreement with university leaders in Suzhou, China, establishing an exchange program for faculty and students at Wake Tech and Suzhou Vocational University. The agreement, believed to be the first of its kind between a North Carolina community college and an Asian institution, will allow Wake Tech students to learn the Chinese language and culture as they prepare for the global workplace. Wake Tech’s Simulation and Game Development program took center stage again in June at the 2007 Digital Game Xpo. The event, on Wake Tech’s Main Campus, is the Southeast’s largest digital game expo. Game enthusiasts of all ages saw demonstrations of some of the most popular games on the market and tried their hand at games created by Wake Tech students. In July, five Wake Tech students competed very successfully at Phi Beta Lambda’s National Leadership Conference in Chicago, with four of the students winning awards. The Homebuilders Association of Raleigh-Wake County announced it would provide Wake Tech with $25,000 in scholarship funds annually over the next ten years. The $250,000 pledge is the largest multiyear scholarship commitment in Wake Tech’s history. The Wake Tech Foundation raised over $1,000,000 for the first time in its history and ended the year with almost $4,000,000 in assets.

A Durham environmental artist named Bryant Holsenbeck joined us in January 2007 as a visiting artist for spring semester. With Wake Tech design students, Holsenbeck created a fantastic sculpture from recycled materials in the Student Services Building.

Foundation Highlights John D. McKinney, Chairman, Wake Tech Foundation Board of Directors On behalf of the Foundation Board, I would like to thank all the Foundation’s investors for making the 2006-07 year one with many first-time successes. Most notably, the Foundation surpassed its $1 million fundraising goal to end the year at just over $1.3 million. Much of this success can be attributed to the dedication of our Corporate Partners – area corporations and business leaders who support Wake Tech’s mission of economic and workforce development. This prestigious group grew by more than twenty this year, including Fidelity Investments, Credit Suisse Securities, and U.S. Food Service Corporation. The Foundation’s scholarship program saw unprecedented growth in 2006-07, with the addition of nineteen scholarships. These new programs include two endowed scholarships, The Fidelity Investments Endowed Scholarship and the Maude Williams Griffis Endowed Scholarship, set to make its first award in the fall of 2007. The HomeBuilders Association of Raleigh and Wake County, a long-time Corporate Partner, made a one-of-a-kind pledge of $250,000 over ten years to provide scholarships to students pursuing degrees, diplomas, or certificates in building-related programs. This multi-year pledge will have a significant impact on the recruitment and retention of students in these high-demand programs. The Foundation’s banner year would not have been possible without the tremendous support provided by the Wake Tech Employee Campaign. Wake Tech faculty and staff exceeded their $60,000 goal with the help of an end-of-the-year challenge grant from the A.E. Finley Foundation. This outstanding record of giving surpassed the previous year’s record by more than $10,000! At the core of the Foundation’s efforts is a commitment to programs that benefit faculty, staff, and students. In 2006-07, the Foundation invested $.97 of every $1 earned in program services, including $258,211 in essential equipment, mini-grants, and other program support, and $63,485 in professional development and recognition for faculty and staff. The Foundation honored its commitment to students by providing $118,444 in merit and financial need-based scholarships and emergency financial assistance. In December 2005, the Foundation Board of Directors implemented a comprehensive Investment Policy with the goal of generating an 8% return on investment each year. In 2006-07, Foundation investments enjoyed a 14% return, bringing total assets to just under $4 million.

On a sad note, the Foundation Board lost one of its own this year. James R. Talton, Jr., a long-time supporter of Wake Tech, passed away in April. Jim had served on the Foundation Board of Directors since 2004 as a representative of the Wake Tech Board of Trustees. To honor his dedication and service, the Foundation Board established the James R. Talton Jr. Memorial Fund. The Fund received its first major gift of $5,000 from Waste Industries in June 2007. Along with generous gifts from Jim’s friends and family, the Fund is well on its way to becoming an endowment – a fitting and lasting tribute to Jim’s commitment to public higher education. The Foundation’s success is the collective accomplishment of all our investors – corporate partners, civic clubs, employees, college retirees, alumni, and many others. The Wake Tech Foundation is proud to serve you and the College, and we appreciate your continued generosity.
