Having congratulated our Year 11’s in November at the Award Evening for their overall success, we now find that we are inadvertently successful at working the current coalition government’s new benchmark for the English baccalaureate.

) ell, for the uninitiated, we will describe it as an afternoon listening to ‘inspirational’ speeches, from the key people involved in the new building After the speeches and with a serious case of frostbite to our feet, some other pupils and I then get the joy of going outside - like we weren’t cold enough to witness the burial of the time capsule, which hilariously failed as the hole that it was meant to fit in wasn’t big enough! When the photographer had finally got his time capsule pictures, it was time to plant a ceremonial Yew Tree with pupils and our local MP. We were all then met by Kate and her colleague who were able to take us on a tour of the school and, I have to admit, it looks very good. Yes, there are three floors, meaning lots more stairs but the corridors are a lot wider. There are

Getting a sneak preview of the all new Walkden High School was an interesting experience; and that’s without walls, lights, furniture. I can’t wait to see the finished product!

By the way, the term “Topping Out” is the ceremony where the last beam is placed at the top of a building. Just in case you wanted to know.

On Saturday 27th November, the PTA held the last Christmas Fair in our building. We had fantastic support from pupils and staff both on non-uniform donation day and on the actual day. One of the highlights of the fair was a visit from Father Christmas!

Roman Holiday In L4L we have been studying the Romans. As well as improving our ability in the learning tools, we have studied some History too. On Thursday 18th November half of Year 7 were split in groups and there were three different activities, led by Roman Tours from Chester. The first activity was the Roman army re-enactment, where a man came and told us about the daily life of a Roman army foot soldier and all about the armour they wore. One person got to try it on, experiencing all the weight of the weapons they used and carried all day.

Session two was with Miss Heron teaching us all about mosaics, she told us the history and showed us how to make them. At first it was a bit complicated, but it was fun! The final Roman experience was the man who told us all about how the Romans cleaned, washed and took care of their personal appearance. He even scraped dirt off his skin with oil whilst telling us about Roman toilets, yuck! I can say on behalf of Year 7 that the activities organised were fun, interesting, different and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Thank you! Olivia Atkinson 7W

Braving a chilly December evening, fifteen Year 9 pupils on the fast track German course visited the German Christmas Markets…in Manchester (!)… to enjoy some Teutonic yuletide fare. Pupils got to taste Bratwurst, Pfannkuchen, Lebkuchen and heisse Schokolade and a couple even managed to save enough money to buy a gift, including some rather unusual bug bracelets! A good time was had by all.

As part of an ongoing homework project, Year 7 French pupils have been busy learning how to spell fifty French words for a spelling bee. Not as easy as it sounds when you consider that, not only do they need to know what all the words mean, but also how to spell them
'
(
(
using the French alphabet! The spelling bee culminated in a class spell-off with pupils having to spell correctly as many words as possible in one minute. The winner and the runner-up from each form will take part next term in an interform competition, in which they will compete for Endeavour Trophy points as well as the opportunity to take part in the regional heats. A big congratulations to all the Year 7 pupils who have worked really hard on this project this term!
