ONCE UPON A SMALL RHINOCEROS Meg McKinlay Leila Rudge 9781925126709 Hardback September 2017 Age: 5+ Foundation - Year 3 Walker Books Australia

A story about challenging the norm, pushing boundaries and being true to oneself. Once, there was a small rhinoceros who wanted to see the big world. So she built a boat. And sailed away ... From the duo behind award-winning picture book No Bears comes a simple yet inspirational tale about challenging the norm, pushing boundaries and being true to oneself.

On the riverbank, all the mud-wallowing, grass-grazing, tree-scratching, sun-bathing rhinoceroses gathered in alarm. “Come back!” they called. “It’s dangerous! You’ll get lost!”

“Perhaps,” said the small rhinoceros.

And she waved as she sailed around the bend, out of sight.

Meg McKinlay is a versatile, award-winning author of children's picture books and novels. Once Upon a Small Rhinoceros is her fourth pairing with illustrator Leila Rudge. Their previous picture book collaboration No Bears was short-listed in two categories for the prestigious CBCA Book of the Year awards. She is an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Western Australia, where she has taught Australian Literature, Japanese, and Creative Writing. www.megmckinlay.com

Leila Rudge is an award-winning and much-loved author/illustrator. Ted, her first picture book as both author and illustrator, was a 2014 CBCA Notable Book. She grew up in England but headed to Australia after completing an Illustration Degree at Bath Spa University. www.leilarudge.com

Marsupial Mole

Mulga Snake

The marsupial mole is a small mammal that lives underground in the sandy desert.

The mulga snake, or king brown snake, produces more venom than any other snake. When mulga snakes bite, they clamp onto their prey and chew, injecting huge amounts of toxic venom.

TRC77-12-2016 WK(Sarah) A is for Australian Animals W:250mmXH:260mm 150L 128gsm Gold Sun M/A Rhodamine/Magenta

A marsupial mole doesn’t need a lot of air to breathe. It can get enough air from the small amount that flows between the grains of sand underground. To keep sand out of their ears, marsupial moles have tiny ear holes that are covered with fur.

Marsupial moles are blind and use their toughened nose pads and foreheads to bulldoze the sand when burrowing. They also use their spadelike front claws to dig and their back feet to fill in the sand behind them.

Like all snakes, the mulga snake hears by picking up vibrations from the ground. It smells by flicking its tongue in and out.

LEAF Sandra Dieckmann 9781911171317 Hardback September 2017 Age: 3+ Early Childhood – Year 2 Flying Eye Books

Crow saw it first. The strange white creature, carried upon the dark waves towards the shore... When a polar bear arrives unexpectedly in the woods, the other animals fear and avoid him, suspecting him to be dangerous – and his odd habit of collecting leaves only adds to their distrust. Then one day, they watch as he attempts to fly over the water with wings made of colourful leaves... trying to get back home. Perhaps he isn't so different after all?

Stomping around the forest, the creature collected leaves every day. Big leaves and small leaves, round leaves and colourful ones.

As he looked around the forest with a searching eye and tore on the green branches, the animals would flee in fear.

HOW DOES MY HOME WORK? Chris Butterworth Lucia Gaggiotti 9781406363784 Hardback August 2017 Age: 5+ Foundation – Year 3 Walker Books

This stylishly illustrated book explains how our homes are supplied with electricity, water and gas. Chris Butterworth traces the journey of water, how it falls from the sky as rain then gets collected up in reservoirs and sent to factories to be treated and tested, before it can finally be piped to our homes. She also simply and clearly explains how electricity is made and where the gas we use comes from. This fascinating process book succeeds in being young, child-centred and friendly, but also packs in an enormous amount of technical information. Domestication

PAWS FOR THOUGHT Felid-like animals have been around for roughly 50 million years, but modern wild cats began to evolve around 16 million years ago. Evolution is the process by which animals have changed over time. Certain characteristics are passed down from generation to generation that help them survive. Modern species of cat are split into 8 groups, based on their history of evolution.

Ocelot Lineage Oncilla

Panthera Lineage Tiger

Caracal Lineage African golden cat

House cats are some of the most popular pets in the world today, but the process of bringing moggies into our homes began many thousands of years ago. Recent studies suggest that cats started to live alongside humans between 9,000–10,000 years ago, around the time that humans began farming. Humans were growing and storing grains, which attracted large numbers of hungry rodents, and this rodent invasion in turn attracted wild cats. These wild cats became domesticated by hanging around humans to get easy food – and they provided efficient pest control at the same time.

Bay Cat Lineage Bay cat

This species of wild cat is imaginatively called a wildcat and is part of the Felis lineage.

Lynx Lineage Eurasian lynx

Puma Lineage Puma

The head of a Smilodon.

Tooth and Tail

8

CRAZY ABOUT CATS Owen Davey 9781911171164 Hardback September 2017 Age: 5+ Early Childhood – Year 3 Flying Eye Books

Felis Lineage Chinese mountain cat

Leopard Cat Lineage Leopard cat

Many felid species that once roamed the earth are now extinct. The prehistoric Smilodon populator, more commonly known as the sabre-toothed tiger, was built like a bear with huge knife-like teeth that were too big to fit in its mouth!

9

This captivating and stunningly illustrated guide will teach you everything you need to know about our feline friends. Did you know that the fishing cat has partially webbed paws for catching fish? Or that pumas can leap up over 5 metres into trees? There are roughly 38 species of cats today, each one superbly adapted to their environment – whether that be in the rainforest or the desert! The perfect book for cat lovers and those interested in the natural world.
