Highland Fling Days 2015 - 5
MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL MESSAGE Tradition, community and family - Highland City leaders believe these are some of the aspects that make the annual Highland Fling Days celebration a valuable part of the city’s offerings to its residents. “I believe traditions are really important for communities, for families, traditions that promote the values that you want, and the Fling is one of those traditions that I believe is important for our community. It brings us together, it creates a family environment which is important for the community, it provides wholesome entertainment, it provides opportunities for volunteers,” said Highland city councilman Brian Braithwaite, “The values of the city are family, community, a sense of community, as well as many other values, but that is what the Fling brings forward.” This year’s theme for Highland City’s Highland Fling celebration the week of July 25 to August 1 is “Love For Home.” “We are excited about our 2015 theme,” said Councilwoman Jessie Schoenfeld. “Our hope is that it stirs emotions in our residents, young and old, a feeling and longing for home - our individual homes, our hometown of Highland and our forever home.” The Highland community has been conducting a summer celebration for more than 100 years in one form or another, said Highland Mayor Mark Thompson. For many years, the celebration was oriented around and organized by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now the city oversees Highland Fling Days, which includes activities such as a car show, a movie in the park, the annual Highland Games, a Grand Parade, live entertainment and vendors booths. The celebration brings the community together as residents are attracted to the various events. “It’s a great thing because it’s the one time of the year when the city can get together in the context of enjoyment and some competitions,” said Councilman Rod Mann, adding that his wife and children have enjoyed entering the art exhibit and contest. 6 - Highland Fling Days 2015
Walking through the booths, sampling the food, listening to the music and spending time with friends are all enjoyable parts of Highland Fling Days, Mann said. Often, people will get to know people within their church congregation, he said, but the Fling “gives you a chance to get to know people outside those boundaries.” “It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy great food, great entertainment and the ability to meet their neighbors,” said Councilman Tim Irwin. Many aspects of the community are brought together during Highland Fling Days, from local businesses to high school students. “There’s something for every age,” he said. “The new residents can feel part of the community and the long-time residents can meet their new neighbors.” Just as important as bringing the community together is bringing families together, said Mayor Thompson, and the Fling does both. Each summer, many children of Highland residents who have moved away from the city come back to spend time with their family and enjoy Highland Fling Days. “I think the family element really is what Highland is,” Thompson said. “It brings family back home.”

HISTORY OF HIGHLAND
Located on a bench area of the Wasatch Mountain Range in northern Utah County, Highland was settled by homesteaders in the 1870s. Some of the first settlers chose the name Highland because the area reminded them of the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. Highland was officially incorporated as a city in 1977 and is home to about 16,000 residents. Highland is located at the mouth of American Fork Canyon and sits on a high plateau at the base of Mt. Timpanogos. It is home to numerous trails, including a portion of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a trail following the shoreline formed by ancient Lake Bonneville that will eventually stretch to more than 280 miles. Timpanogos Cave National Monument, a collection of caverns accessed by a 1.5-mile hike up a mountainside in American Fork Canyon, is accessed through Highland, as is the Alpine Scenic Loop, a beautiful drive winding through the mountains east of the city. Inside the city are a variety of parks for residents to enjoy, including the Town Center Splash Pad which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. Residents come together to celebrate the founding of their community during Highland Fling Days, an annual week-long celebration full of activities that include a grand parade, a fine art show, a 5K run, entertainment and fireworks.

GRAND MARSHALS Glen & Brenda Thurgood
Glen Thurgood and his wife, Brenda, built a home and moved their family to Highland in 1978. They were drawn to the rural atmosphere and hard-working, volunteer service-oriented people they found in the city. It turned out to be a great place to raise their five sons and two daughters. Utilizing his knowledge and expertise as a registered professional engineer and Brigham Young University professor of civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation, Glen’s volunteer service and commitment to Highland began almost immediately. He served on the first Highland Citizens Transportation & Circulation Advisory Subcommittee and was asked to serve as its chair. As a consultant with the city’s engineer, Glen wrote the original Highland City Transportation Master Plan. Glen coached Little League Baseball teams for many years while also serving on the board of directors and as president of the Highland Baseball Association. During his tenure as president of the association, he was primarily responsible for the construction of the Little League Baseball field on school district property west of the Heritage Park LDS Church. After obtaining the necessary approvals, he requested limited funding from the city and secured donated materials and services from local businesses. Using his own equipment, he and his sons contributed countless hours in construction of the field. He also organized parent volunteers and made sure the field was ready for the start of the baseball season. Glen also served as a volunteer Jr. Jazz and intramural basketball coach for many years, coaching numerous young boys from Highland. His coaching style, whether in baseball or basketball, emphasized fair play and good sportsmanship along with teaching solid skills. Consequently, his teams won a lot of games, finishing among the top teams of the league each year and always qualifying for an opportunity to represent Highland in postseason tournament play. In 1989, Glen accompanied a group of 10 - Highland Fling Days 2015
Explorer Scouts from Highland, including his oldest son, on a CHOICE humanitarian mission to Peru to Glen Thurgood help native Taquile Indians build a school on the island of Taquile, which is located in Lake Titicaca on the border of Peru and Bolivia. The government had promised the islanders that if they would build a school, they (the government) would provide a teacher. The school was built of stone quarried on the island and completed within the week the CHOICE group was there. Glen served as a member of the Highland City Council from 1992 to 1996. Once again, he freely shared his time, engineering and transportation knowledge with a growing Highland City. During this time, he was primarily responsible for bringing pressurized irrigation to Highland. He was also heavily involved in writing the ordinance facilitating controlled commercial development in the city as well as many other policies, programs and projects important to the economy and quality of life of our young and rapidly growing community. While on the city council he served as mayor pro tem for two years. In his personal life, Glen has consistently demonstrated integrity and service. He taught and conducted research in the BYU Civil Engineering Department for 38 years before retiring in 2005. During that time, he arranged for volunteer BYU Civil Engineering students to build the gazebo located in the Merlin Larsen Park in Highland as a community service project. Most importantly, Glen has been a great example of volunteer service to his children who are now caring, responsible adults of good character. They have great memories of growing up in Highland. Glen and Brenda Thurgood are the parents of seven children and 22 grandchildren and are proud to call Highland home.

FAMILY ADVENTURE RACE The Family Adventure Race at Highland Glen is a family-oriented Sprint Adventure Race with three challenging and fun legs to test you and your family’s physical strength and mental acuity. This race is similar to the Adventure Races being held across the country. However, the Family Adventure Race is geared toward families who love the outdoors and adventure. Teams will consist of at least one adult and up to 6 kids, although other combinations will be considered. There is no age limit for the kids, but the kids will have to be able to ride a bike on gravel roads. Younger kids may have to be transported in bike carriers and backpacks. Older kids (8 to 16) will probably have more fun, but smaller kids are welcome and will have fun as long as parents are not too competitive. The race will require up to 4 hours to complete. Teams will follow race clues while biking, canoeing, and trekking to each checkpoint where they will complete challenging puzzles and fun tasks. Routes, tasks, and challenges will remain secret until race day. The challenges will consist of physical and mental tasks that will have be completed before moving on. Some challenges have to be completed by the kids and others by the adults. Some of the more difficult tasks will require the whole team to complete.
