Mayor’s Message Mayor’s Message
I am excited to welcome you to another beautiful Steel Days celebration! I encourage everyone to participate I can personally attest that Steel Days is what brings our community together and where memories are made I remember as a young child being excited for when the carnival came to town for Steel Days Cell phones weren’t needed with the network of kid spies we had . As soon as the first kid saw the carnival trucks pulling in, every kid in the neighborhood knew within the hour and was at Robinson Park to watch them set up With excitement I watched parts of the carnival being set up over the three days leading up to Steel Days . First the ferris wheel, then the myriad of spinning rides, then the booths and food stations As a kid, that was one of the only times I could get cotton candy and a corn dog These memories were salient for me as it marked the start of one of the best weeks of the year: Steel Days Even still, the sounds, lights, and smells at the carnival take me back to when I was a kid and get
me excited all over again for Steel Days I also remember as a kid going into my parent’s backyard, and even later as an adult with my own family, to enjoy barbeque and the Steel Days fireworks As our family grew, and as Steel Days grew as well, we moved to what would become the Big Show at Art Dye Even today, we gather there to lay out blankets, eat food, and enjoy music and fireworks When I see the thousands of people at Art Dye watching the fireworks, I have to smile because I know from personal experience that there are probably thousands more in backyards across the city also enjoying the fireworks with their friends and family . I remember many years ago working for the parks department and helping with different activities at Steel Days I was at the carnival one year when, at midnight, crews were there to film a scene for the coming-of-age sport comedy called, The Sandlot . Because they were filming the scene so late, I had to be there to make sure the sprinklers didn’t go off during their filming
As a father and grandfather, I enjoy watching similar excitement and memories being built within my own kids and grandkids . We have had three generations of my family attending various events . It’s at those events that we laugh over old memories while creating new ones For my family, Steel Days means tradition, family time, and community We plan our personal activities around Steel Days because we enjoy it so much I invite you all to have fun at Steel Days this year . Create your own memories while enjoying all that Steel Days has to offer
Mayor Brad FrostHistory of Steel Days
History of Steel Days
THIS YEAR, WE CELEBRATE 78 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST STEEL DAY CELEBRATION!
For over 100 years the city of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community, and residents This annual celebration is now known as Steel Days, but throughout the years the festivities have also been called Timber Day, Liberty Day, and Poultry Day .
TIMBER DAY
Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment, and games . It began around 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers ” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out, and shared it with others There were activities for young and old, with a horseshoe competition, foot races, and ball games . Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904
LIBERTY DAY
Liberty Day had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park . There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horse-drawn wagons When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels
There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration . In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States . There was a baseball game, dance, and fireworks The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events .
POULTRY DAY
In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic There was also a parade, ball game, races, carnival, and a program and dance Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen . During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s lap . She simply wiped it up and went on with the day . The Sunrise Salute, or firing the cannon, continued at daybreak . There was a free
lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served There was a flower show, art show, and an all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater
There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression Poultry Day was held in July 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war, with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944
STEEL DAYS
Since 1945, Steel Days has been American Fork’s traditional celebration . Then-mayor O De Vere Wootton decided Poultry Day no longer reflected the city’s economy The newly constructed Columbia Steel Mill brought many newcomers, who made an impact on housing, utilities, traffic, and commerce The mill became the largest employer in Utah Valley . Two individuals suggested “Steel Day” after a request for ideas for a name for the celebration . Steel Day was selected and was celebrated on Labor Day
In 1946, Steel Day was a full day of events, similar to Poultry Day . The American Fork Chamber of Commerce was also established that year and was involved in the planning of the Steel Day events . The parade featured numerous floats decorated for and by local businesses Bands came from Tooele, Salt Lake City, Nephi, Payson, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Provo The parade was presented twice for many years - at 10:00 a .m . from 500 West Main Street to 500 East, and then at 6:00 p m . when the route was reversed .
In 1963, the city used a smaller approach, calling it “Community Day” It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks Despite its success, there was no celebration in 1964 or 1965 Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration . There were, however, abbreviated queen pageants held .
In 1966, a new committee was formed, and it was again a larger celebration that was now held in July They also resumed using the Steel Days name . In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed and boat racing was added to the list of events . In 1968, the “City of Fun” Carnival made its Steel Days debut
The festivities remained mostly the same for the next several decades, with several of the events being part of the festivities every year and others being added or eliminated . In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer
In 2018, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce again became an integral part of the Steel Days celebration when it contracted with American Fork City to manage and operate Steel Days, a role that it has been proud to fulfill since . That year, we added the Kickball Tournament and the Steel Days Scramble Golf Tournament to the event lineup
In 2019, we added Kids Splash Night and the Pickleball Tournament and made the decision to move the carnival to Art Dye Park after it became apparent that it had outgrown its home of 50 years at Robinson Park
In 2020, after working with the health department, we decided that our community needed a chance to connect and celebrate and held the 75 year anniversary celebration of Steel Days in spite of the world being in a global pandemic . For the first time in the history of American Fork, we brought the parade to the people with a 23 mile route through the city
In 2021, we brought back one of the historical Steel Days events, the Variety Show, and renamed it American Fork’s Got Talent; in 2022, a Cornhole Tournament and Teen Pool Party were added to the festivities .
New Steel Days events for 2023 include a 3v3 Basketball Tournament, a Mario Kart Tournament, a Wiffle Ball Tournament, a Guns vs Hoses Softball Game, and a Coloring Contest . We are also excited to add a state of the art Drone Show to help kick off the festivities We have extended the parade route, almost doubling its length, to accommodate our city’s growing population . Whether Steel Days has been a family tradition for several years or you’ve never attended, you are invited to come check out our new events, enjoy all of the fun that Steel Days has to offer, and make some memories of your own

How do you put into words a year that was life changing?
American Fork is strong, kind, organized, and so much more . Getting to give back to the community that has given so much to me has been the greatest honor Our city officials and Chamber of Commerce really do pour their hearts into everything they do and love us and this city so much! They have given me many opportunities to serve . Going to our schools, service projects, ribbon cuttings, and Steel Days among other events has shown me the love that American Fork has to unite as one and create meaningful memories From the little elementary school children to the business owners in our city, every person comes together to make American Fork what it is
Serving American Fork has been one of the greatest blessings in my life . The support and love that I have received from each and every person in our city has truly touched my heart I am humbled and thankful for the opportunity I had to serve you this year I will forever love the place that I will always call my home Thank you American Fork .

Main St . and head east on Main Street to 100 E . It is our goal to make the parade as entertaining and enjoyable as possible In order to do so, we need to make safety our highest priority Please stay out of the road since many floats and parade vehicles have limited lines of sight Everyone loves seeing excited children collecting candy and prizes and we want to continue this tradition Please help us to do this by not allowing children to run into the road to collect candy Parade participants have been instructed to distribute candy near the sides of the road
As the parade concludes, please take pride in our community and keep it clean by collecting trash that is around you or that you see and depositing it into the trash receptacles that will be placed along the parade route Please remember Steel Days and the Grand Parade are meant to bring the community together and celebrate our great city . Let’s have fun and be respectful to everyone around us including spectators, parade entries, and volunteers
