COMMITTEE MESSAGE

American Fork

STEEL DAYS

75 YEARS

of STARS, STRIPES & STEEL!

Whether you are a long-time American Fork resident, newcomer, or visitor to the city – Welcome! We appreciate you being here and hope you will join us in our annual celebration and feel

like part of our community. Countless hours have been spent by the Steel Days Committee and volunteers to ensure that a safe and successful celebration could happen this year. After much discussion, research, and collaboration with the Utah County Health Department, we are excited to be able to celebrate the 75th year since the very first “Steel Day”. We want to thank everyone that has been involved in planning these events as well as our supportive and generous business community for helping to make the celebration possible. For this special occasion, we have a "75 Year" logo for Steel Days. It is a callback to some of the iconic businesses in American Fork

and incorporates advertising themes from the 1940's. We will have a small supply of limited edition "75 Year" shirts available for purchase. We appreciate your patience with us as we have worked through all the logistics of holding our beloved Steel Days celebration. The events and obstacles that we have faced over the past several months have challenged every one of us in ways we never would have imagined when we started the year. As we open our community for the celebration, we ask that we all use good, common sense practices to stay safe and keep those around us safe. Steel Days is a tradition that enables us to enjoy time with our families, our neighbors, and our community. This year, more than most, we want to provide a way to celebrate our community and enjoy the bonds that we have formed. It is important to remember how vested we are in each other’s lives as a community and that every one of us has helped to make American Fork such a wonderful place to live, work, and play. We all went into this year together and we will get through this year together. Here’s to a fun and SAFE Steel Days celebration!

HISTORY OF STEEL DAYS This year, we celebrate 75 years since the first Steel Day celebration! For over 100 years the city of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community, and residents. This annual celebration is now known as Steel Days, but throughout the years the festivities have also been called Timber Day, Liberty Day, and Poultry Day.

TIMBER DAY

Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment, and games. It began around 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers.” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out, and shared it with others. There were activities for young and old, with a horseshoe competition, foot races, and ball games. Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904.

LIBERTY DAY

Liberty Day had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage. The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park. There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horsedrawn wagons. When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other. Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels. There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration. In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States. There was a baseball game, dance, and fireworks. The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events.

POULTRY DAY

In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration. It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic. There was also a parade, ball game, races, carnival, and a program and dance. Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen. During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s lap. She simply wiped it up and went on with the day. The Sunrise Salute, or firing the cannon, continued at daybreak. There was a free lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served. There was a flower show, art show, and an all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater. There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression. Poultry Day was held in July 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war, with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944. 12

STEEL DAYS

Since 1945, Steel Days has been American Fork’s traditional celebration. Then-mayor O. De Vere Wootton decided Poultry Day no longer reflected the city’s economy. The newly constructed Columbia Steel Mill brought many newcomers, who made an impact on housing, utilities, traffic, and commerce. The mill became the largest employer in Utah Valley. Two individuals suggested “Steel Day” after a request for ideas for a name for the celebration. Steel Day was selected and was celebrated on Labor Day. In 1946, Steel Day was a full day of events, similar to Poultry Day. The American Fork Chamber of Commerce was also established that year and was involved in the planning of the Steel Day events. The parade featured numerous floats decorated for and by local businesses. Bands came from Tooele, Salt Lake City, Nephi, Payson, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Provo. The parade was presented twice for many years at 10:00 a.m. from 500 West Main Street to 500 East, and then at 6:00 p.m. when the route was reversed. The duration of Steel Days expanded from one day to three days, then four and five days, and eventually to ten days. Currently, Steel Days runs for eight days and includes over 30 events. This year, because the 4th of July falls on a Saturday, we have condensed the events into 6 days. Vehicles were also an important part of Steel Days history. In 1961, the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) held a drawing for a Ford Falcon. However, it did not prove to be enough of a draw and there was a $1,500 deficit after the ticket sales were tallied. The next year, the car was a sporty Thunderbird and ticket sales increased dramatically. The evening program featured a singing group from Ogden, “The

Osmond Brothers,” complete with Donny, who even then stole the show. In 1963, the city used a smaller approach, calling it “Community Day.” It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks. Despite its success, there was no celebration in 1964 or 1965. Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration. There were, however, abbreviated queen pageants held. In 1966, a new committee was formed, and it was again a larger celebration that was now held in July. They also resumed using the Steel Days name. In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed and boat racing was added to the list of events. In 1968, the Big “City of Fun” Special Bargain Carnival made its Steel Days debut. The festivities remained mostly the same for the next

several decades, with several of the events being part of the festivities every year and others being added or eliminated. In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer. In 2018, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce again became an integral part of the Steel Days celebration when it contracted with American Fork City to manage and operate Steel Days, a role that it has been proud to fulfill since. 2020 has brought incredible hardship and turmoil to many of our businesses and residents. The Steel Days Committee spent many hours researching, pondering, and discussing whether or not we would be able to hold a celebration or if it would even be wise to do so, as the health and safety of the attendees is our utmost concern. It was agreed that this year, more than ever, our community needs a chance to connect and celebrate and that it can be done safely. Whether this has been a family tradition for several years or you’ve never attended, you are invited to come and enjoy all of the fun that Steel Days has to offer and make some memories of your own.

OUR P R O C E S S American Fork City recently completed a comprehensive process for developing a new logo and visual identity that accurately captures the community. Under the careful oversight of Mayor Frost and the City Council, the branding process included a thorough review of the city’s history, input from residents, and consultation with local branding experts. The new brand will help the city be more consistent and effective in communicating American Fork’s unique value to citizens and businesses across the state of Utah.

OUR B R AN D A fork in the road represents a place of options and offers a sense of excitement, adventure, convenience, and freedom. Our proximity to the lake, mountains, numerous metropolitan areas, and key east-west and north-south corridors in Utah County, make the “hub” a great symbol for American Fork. The city’s new brand speaks to the centrality of American Fork, which serves as a hub of Utah County. The new city logo is comprised of key visuals that celebrate the unique features of the city, its history, and its location. The lines radiating from the center of the logo represent wagon wheel spokes. This feature pays tribute to American Forks’ pioneer legacy, while also emphasizing the city’s central location as a hub of Utah County. The lines also double as light rays emanating from a central sun. The mountains rising from the base of the circle represent the peaks of the Wasatch Mountain Range, as well as American Fork Canyon and other natural features of the surrounding environment. American Fork is one of only a few cities in the United States to carry the name of the nation. The brand’s primary colors were inspired by the American flag and were carefully selected to reflect the city’s deep-rooted sense of patriotism and pride. Several accent colors were added to the brand palette to allow for visual differentiation and interest. Other elements, including official fonts and additional graphic elements, help round out the brand while giving the city everything it needs to communicate in a more effective, professional, and memorable manner. We are proud of our heritage and our future. We feel our new brand successfully captures both.

Grand Marshal ANNETTE PULLEY by Amelia Wesemann Annette Pulley will be honored as the Grand Marshal of the 2020 Steel Days Grand Parade on July 11, 2020. The parade will start at 9:30 that morning. Annette retired this January from American Fork Hospital after 49 years of dedicated service as labor and delivery nurse. She has seven children, ten grandchildren, and has delivered babies for almost half of a decade. Pulley was believed to be the longest serving registered nurse in Inter-

mountain Healthcare, and has spent all of her time serving in American Fork. She has worked at the hospital since 1971, first working in medical records, and graduated as a nurse in 1974 from Brigham Young University. In her 49 years of service she has done it all - including delivering babies in the parking lot, elevator, and babies from four generations of the same family. When asked why she stayed in American Fork for her whole career, Annette replied, “The community in American Fork is truly unmatched. Every nurse who left the American Fork Hospital always regretted it, as it really is the best place to work. I absolutely love the city and loved my job, leaving American Fork was never an option for me.” Her love for American Fork runs deep, as five generations of Annette’s ancestors are buried in American Fork. tor, John Miller, was a pioneer who came here and is buried in the pioneer cemetery. “American Fork is everything to me. I love this city, this community, our mayor, and the atmosphere here. There is a reason my family has never left.” Annette has taught in seminaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has spoken to classes, and has also taught maturation clinics. She is widely known and loved in the community for her service, and will be missed at American Fork Hospital, where she was known as everyone’s sweet grandma. “I remember Annette coming and speaking in my child development class in high school,” says an American Fork High School student. “She was so knowledgeable and taught us about labor and delivery. When her presentation was over, I wanted her to be my friend! She mentioned how some of her former students and patients would come and visit her and send her their wedding and baby announcements. After getting to meet her, I had no doubts as to why; she was just the sweetest.” Annette’s service is not over, as she was called to be the nurse of the Orem, Utah mission just two weeks after her retirement. She is continuing to serve and educate her beloved community. American Fork is the only place Annette could ever imagine living. She said her husband, Vard, tried to get them to move to Pleasant Grove, and she cried and cried and just couldn’t do it. “All of my people are here. This city is something special, and this place is my home.” She went on to say that she has attended the Steel Days festival every single year of her life, and her favorite event is by far the parade. She is beyond thrilled and honored to be able to be a part of it this year. She wanted to add that she is thankful for this opportunity, and it truly is a sweet honor to be recognized in the community and city that she loves so dearly.

Grand Marshal ANNETTE PULLEY As an American Fork nurse for 49 years, there is no one better to honor as our Grand Marshal and show our appreciation for not only Annette, but also all of our healthcare heroes who have worked tirelessly to keep our community healthy. We are so grateful and appreciative for Annette and our local healthcare workers, especially now, for their sacrifice to our city.

Auto repair shop strives to serve the community as the ‘Friendly Neighborhood Mechanic’ When considering what to name their business back in 2005, Rod and Kimberly Martin chose World Class Auto Repair to show technical expertise and top-notch service. They have now enjoyed 15 years of serving – and living in – our community and are grateful for the support received from many happy customers. As their family and the American Fork community have grown, so has their vision of their business. They don’t want to merely be great at fixing cars, they want to be great neighbors and community partners. They are happy to announce a new name and branding: Main Street Mechanic. “Our mission to provide the best auto care possible has not changed, but we want our community to see us as their friendly neighborhood mechanic.” Those who have visited the shop have noticed a retro-type feel inside, and that will now extend to their name and logo. It features a classic 1950s pedal car, reminiscent of a simpler time when neighbors readily took care of neighbors. “We want to be the people you look to for maintenance and repair.” Rod says. “The best shop is the one that does the job right the first time. We diagnose things with the proper equipment so we can let people know what’s going on. The main thing is, I don’t want you to spend a dime unless it’s going to be helpful. Whether it’s fixing what is wrong with your car, or helping it last longer, we can help. There’s a lot of mystery and misinformation about car repair out there, and we want people to have straight answers.” They seek to look at each car as an individual. Not every driver treats his or her vehicle the same and so each person needs individualized care. They are

committed to doing what is best for any given situation to help you get the most miles for your dollars. With the current situation, they are doing everything they can to make sure your visit is a safe one. They disinfect customer cars when they come in and before they are picked up. Their Rod Martin employees follow all guidelines for masks and social distancing, and they allow for notouch drop-off and pickup. Though they are not part of a larger chain, they provide special services to their customers, such as a shuttle van that gives rides to customers to work or home – and back again - while their car is being worked on. They also have a small fleet of loaner cars for those whose repairs will take longer. “We’re right here in American Fork in the middle of it,” Rod says. “We just want a chance to help.” You can find your friendly, competent neighborhood mechanic at 337 West Main Street in American Fork.

MISS AMERICAN FORK Sarah Sabey

by Amelia Wesemann Crowned Miss American Fork in 2019, Sarah Sabey was expecting her reign to end and to pass along her title this year. Little did she know, she will now get to carry the title of Miss American Fork for another year after the 2020 pageant was cancelled. When she was asked to describe her experience serving as Miss American Fork over the past year, Sarah responded, “It’s a lot less about the crowns and fancy dresses and mostly just about connecting with others through serving and caring about them.” Now getting to serve American Fork another year, Sarah thinks American Fork has a great morale and is a city unlike any other. “As Mayor Frost put it, we are like the big brother to our neighboring cities,” she says. “I graduated from American Fork High School and have worked at the American Fork Chick-fil-A for 3 years. In both places, I have seen many individuals and groups strive for excellence in all aspects of life.” As part of her service, Sarah has been serving lunch each week at the senior center, and says she has never met a more warm, welcoming group. In addition, she has also had the opportunity to do shoe drives at elementary schools, speak to young women’s groups about realistic self-esteem, and raise money for Children’s Miracle Network. When asked

to describe her experience serving the city she said, “Very busy, but even more fulfilling.” Sarah said that during her time as Miss American Fork, there were a lot of occasions that she felt inadequate, and she almost dropped out of the Miss American Fork pageant last summer. “Despite my feelings of inadequacy, every time I go ahead and put my best efforts forward, I’ve never regretted it,” Sarah says. “Putting yourself out there can be scary, but it is always worth it.” Sarah Sabey will be serving another year as Miss American Fork and plans to attend Utah Valley University. After that, she says she would love to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. “I’m not sure of my career pathway, but I’m currently considering becoming a math teacher, working in real estate, or entrepreneurship. My year of service as Miss American Fork has taught me that my greatest limits are my own self- doubts. It’s always better to aim high and miss than aim low and hit the mark.”

FOOD & VENDOR EXPO Presented in conjunction with AF Chamber of Commerce

Come and check out the wide variety of craft, service, and retail vendors at the Steel Days Food and Vendor Expo at Art Dye Park (1000 N. 550 E.). The Expo runs from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10 and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. Because most of the events where these vendors sell their merchandise have been cancelled this year, many of them have experienced significant decreases in revenue. We encourage you to support these local businesses. There will also be several food trucks and food vendors offering all types of delicious food and drinks. Some of the types of food available for purchase are American, Asian, desserts and sweet treats, Hawaiian/Polynesian, Italian, shaved ice, snacks, and South American/Mexican. To quench your thirst during the hot, July afternoon there will also be several specialty drink vendors selling ice-cold soda and lemonade. A large dining tent will be set up with tables and chairs for covered eating and for those looking for relief from the sun.

NEIGHBORHOOD PARADE ROUTE

EST NW

The Steel Days Neighborhood Parade will be on Saturday, July 11 at 9:00 a.m and will be a 22 mile route through American Fork. This year, because of the construction on Main Street and the need to provide more space for people to social distance while viewing the parade, we are changing the route. The parade will be coming to the people! It will start at American Fork Junior High, go throughout the neighborhoods in the city, and then end at Rotary Park. Please see the map for route details. It is our goal to make the parade as entertaining and enjoyable as possible. In order to do so, we need to make safety our highest priority. Please stay out of the road and avoid congregating in groups. As the parade concludes, please help us take pride in our community and keep it clean by collecting any trash that is around you or that you see and depositing it into trash receptacles. Please remember that Steel

CAR SHOW MEMORIES BILLY THOMPSON III

2016-NLHOF Inductee

Growing up in Southern Maryland, I was, as most teenagers are, influenced by what I saw around me. There was a guy that had the cleanest ride I’ve ever seen, and lowriding has intrigued me ever since. I started getting into building lowrider model cars at the age of 13. When I was about 15, I was moved around to multiple group homes and homeless shelters. The only thing keeping me motivated and sane was this newfound hobby of mine. I built my first lowrider bicycle when I was still in the homeless system, and I was so proud of it because I built it from scratch. When my aunt pulled me out of the system at age 20, I really didn’t know what to do or how to cope with being an adult, so I bought another bike thinking maybe

it would balance me out. The lowrider scene on the East Coast was thriving. I unveiled my lowrider bike “Independence Day” for the first time when I had only been out of the homeless system for a week. At the age of 25, after several more builds, I sent in an application to be considered for the National Lowrider Hall of Fame. At the age of 26, I was inducted into the NLHoF, becoming the youngest and one of the few from the East Coast. I know there’s a reason why I ran into the guy with the Mazda who inspired me and why my creativity and patience blossomed in every aspect of my life as a result.

CRAIG HULL

My 1972 GMC 2500 was purchased new by my grandfather. The truck has spent its entire life in Utah County. He used it mainly to pull his boat and camper back and forth to Strawberry Reservoir. I remember riding in it during many trips to cut firewood and go hunting. My grandpa passed in 1999, and I have had it since then. In 2006, with 88,000 miles on it, the truck started to have some engine problems. It was parked in my backyard until 2020 when I pulled out the motor and rebuilt it, and now it’s back on the road. I will never paint it because I want to keep it all original. It’s always been a member of the family and always will be in the future.

BRENT MILLS

Brent Mill’s brother Keith bought the 1965 Pontiac in 1972 when he was 17 and Brent was 15. The two dragged State Street for a couple of years, with Keith Mills’ throttle foot going through a few engines. The brotherly cruising was curtailed when Keith Mills got married and had a daughter. The GTO had a cracked engine block and money was tight, so it sat and deteriorated. In the spring of 1981, Brent Mills traded his brother a motorcycle for the Pontiac. That summer, Keith Mills was killed when he struck a horse while riding the motorcycle. “His accident caused a flurry of emotions for me, and I couldn’t bring myself to work on the GTO, so it sat parked in my garage for many years,” Brent said. He moved the car to new homes twice and built several other cars while the GTO sat. In 2010, he decided it was time to rebuild the GTO or get rid of it. He replaced or repaired nearly every component on the car. He did all of the 46

work himself, including the body and paint. Brent bought a 1970 Pontiac Bonneville just to get the 455 engine out of it, which he rebuilt. The machine work was done at Utah Chassis and Machine; he did the assembly himself. He bought a reproduction kit complete with foam for the seats and did the work himself. He estimates the whole build took him two years. After all that Brent has gone through with this rolling tribute to his brother, it’s hard to imagine anyone knowing their car better.

STEEL DAY QUEEN Anna May Mitchell Miller • 1947

Anna May Mitchell Miller was crowned Steel Day Queen in 1947 and is the longest reigning Steel Day(s) pageant winner. Anna was 17 years old when she was crowned Steel Day Queen at an Open Air Dance Hall named The Latona. Altabank is now where The Latona once stood. At the time, different businesses sponsored each contestant, and she was sponsored by Robinson Sporting Goods. The night it was announced she had won, she was asked to say “a few words”. She was overwhelmed with surprise and joy, so a few words it was. “I’m happy and proud to represent this great city and the people I love. Thank you for voting for me.” She was filled with emotion and excitement at the thought of representing the city she loved then and still does. Anna was the youngest child born

to Leland Richard and Oma Mitchell. She was born in American Fork and has lived here almost her entire life. Her father was an Industrial Arts teacher at American Fork High School and was also the Building Inspector for American Fork City and built many homes here in town. Richard started the Mitchell Farms and Orchard, which was well-known for its apples but also supplied many other cities with fruits and vegetables. The last of the orchard was sold about two years ago to make way for a housing development. When asked what Steel Days means to her, Anna responded, “Steel Days is an abundance of fond past memories. I have rarely missed this city celebration! I love attending the parade, the art exhibit, the flower show, the carnival, and watching the fireworks. Our city, through the years, has always made

Steel Days an event to look forward to and a time to remember! The celebration was named after Geneva Steel - a booming industry for many years. American Fork is a city to be proud of, and I’m proud to call it home.” Anna says she has so many favorite Steel Days memories. “The year I was Queen was an exciting year for me. We had a Queen’s luncheon for all of the pageant contestants - a fun tradition that still exists today! The Steel Day Queen was chosen by the public through buying votes. A car was given away during the Variety Show, and the money raised from buying votes helped purchase that car. I was privileged to draw the name of the winner, which was a fun opportunity! The Queen’s float was featured in celebrations throughout Utah. It was 1947 and was the Utah Centennial Celebration, so we felt lucky to take part in the city’s parade!” Anna added, “The attendants and I invited Governor Maw to our Steel Day celebration that year. We were also taken in a small airplane and flown around the counties. It was my first time in an airplane, which was very exciting! American Fork city gave me many opportunities to participate in the community. These, and many more, are memories I cherish. They filled my experience as Queen with so much excitement.” It is our honor to recognize Anna and her family’s contributions to the community of American Fork and to the city. When told that her story was going to be part of this year’s 75-year anniversary celebration Anna said, “I’ll always treasure my past memories. Being the Steel Day Queen for American Fork was my pleasure and an honor.”

CITY COUNCIL STEEL DAYS MEMORIES BARBARA CHRISTIANSEN

There are so many memories I have of Steel Days through the years. While I am not a native of American Fork, I have lived here long enough to definitely consider this my home town. For nearly three decades I worked for the newspaper and covered most of the events, taking photographs, interviewing grand marshals and queens, asking questions, observing traditions, getting sunburned, and more. For me, the best memory of Steel Days would have to be a composite of the many people I met – those who came back for the celebration, those who volunteered and spent too many hours to count to put on the events, those who watched, and those who felt the spirit of the city ‘s celebration. The people who have American Fork in their souls are definitely my best memory.

Growing up in American Fork it is very hard to choose just one memory of Steel Days. There are so many memories from different stages of my life that involve Steel Days. Take the parade for example, I loved going as a kid and the excitement of collecting candy to when I was in the marching band for the high school marching in the parade to taking my own kids down and watching the parade to being a council member and throwing out candy to the crowd.  Steel Days is all about coming together as a community and celebrating what we all hold closest to us: our relationships. Some events have changed over the years and some have stayed the same, but the one constant that Steel Days provides is an opportunity to participate and strengthen relationships. Here’s to another year!

The memory I want to share was working in the kiddie foam pool last year. Kelly Stone and I had a great time helping the little ones get in and out of the pool. It was really fun to watch them play in the pool as they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. After they came out we would wipe the bubbles off of their faces and out of their eyes. It is always a such a joy to see kids having good clean fun.

STACI CARROLL

My favorite memory of Steel Days was last year before the big show. My family and I were hanging out on the grass, eating, watching some of the pre-show entertainment, and tossing a ball. As we were doing this, people were gradually gathering behind and around us. After a couple of hours of this, my 10-year-old son stood up and turned around and was shocked by the number of people around us. “There’s so many people! Feeling the energy and excitement of so many neighbors and friends at the big show makes for a great night.

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS As the 2020 Steel Days Committee Co-chairs, we would like to express our appreciation to the many volunteers who have put in countless hours to make the events included in the Steel Days celebration possible, the city of American Fork for their unfailing support, and the sponsors for their commitment to the community and financial contribution even in a year of unprecedented hardship. Our city celebration could not be successful without the time, effort, and resources sacrificed by all of them to serve the community and provide a chance for all of us to connect and celebrate when it is so desperately needed. We ask all of the residents and visitors to please be sure to thank those who have worked so hard to put on another funfilled celebration for the city this year. Their service enables us to honor and enjoy the traditions of all the volunteers who have made contributions throughout the history of Steel Days, and we are excited to be able to celebrate the 75th anniversary of this beloved American Fork tradition. We invite everyone to come and participate, have fun, and make memories at all of the many events during the Steel Days celebration.
