When you read or hear the word “Legacy”, what comes to mind? Do you think about some of the greatest people throughout history and what they gave the world? Or do you turn your thoughts to loved ones and the precious pearls of wisdom you learned from them? The American Fork Chamber of Commerce was created by key leaders and businessmen in the community who had a vision to build an organization that would make a lasting impact and leave a legacy of knowledge and influence. Professionals and community leaders have built upon that legacy since the Chamber’s inception in 1946, helping pave the way to what the Chamber is today: the largest Chamber of Commerce in Utah County and one of the most influential business organizations in the valley. As we are entrusted with the day to day operations of the Chamber, we keep the mission of the Chamber in the forefront of our minds, “Uniting and Advancing the Success of Business in Utah County.” We take this responsibility seriously and are committed to seeing that the needs of our members are a guiding factor in all of our decisions. The past couple of years have brought unprecedented challenges, have wrought necessary change and innovation, and have taught invaluable lessons. As we forge ahead, we are focusing on the following areas to help bring continued success to our members:

Advocacy - Strengthening their voice through the Chamber’s advocacy efforts and relationships with public officials Credibility - Adding credibility to their business and boosting their reputation by partnering with the Chamber Growth - Providing the tools they need to grow their business through referrals, strategic partnerships, and exclusive

Chamber programs

Education

- Giving them a competitive edge by providing access quality training and educational opportunities

Connection

- Producing programs and events where they can build relationship by networking with their peers and connect with potential customers

Visibility

- Creating opportunities for them to get noticed and promote their business through social media, marketing, and community events We plan on focusing our efforts this year to build on and amplify the legacy that the founding Chamber members left us. We look forward to strengthening our ties with the cities that we serve as we continue to find ways to provide value and benefit to the business community. We invite every business owner and professional to join us. Visit americanforkchamber.org to find out how to take advantage of the many ways the American Fork Chamber of Commerce can help you connect and find new levels of success.

Kyle Larsen

the chair of the Board of Directors

2022 Chair of the Board of Directors

The American Fork Chamber of Commerce helps people make connections, and I encourage all businesses to get involved. Coming to the end of a global pandemic, making connections has never been more important. I have always been a firm believer that it is easier to succeed together than to succeed alone. One of the things I have learned over the years is that everyone has something to offer, everyone has a connection that can help you and your business prosper, everyone is willing to help if you just ask. I am amazed by the number of times I have come to a Chamber luncheon or meeting with a question or problem in my head that I need to solve and then left the meeting with the answers I needed. Our Chamber is committed to making these connections and making them count. We try hard to make sure that we provide networking opportunities that are meaningful and insightful. I can’t urge you enough to take advantage of what we have to offer. I have seen the tremendous benefit in my own business just by simply putting in the effort to ask, to network, and talk with new people. Step out of your comfort zone a little bit and I promise that you will see the benefits of your efforts.

Let s’ get back to business and let s’ succeed together!

Honoring Vern Pyne

Vern Pyne served on the American Fork Chamber Board of Directors for 10 years and passed away in October of 2021. Vern left behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service to his family and community. The world will miss Vern’s sense of humor and good nature. He was a light-hearted straight shooter who had a special gift for making people smile and feel loved. He was the best example of unconditional love and always looked to serve others. Throughout his career, Vern worked in sales and marketing leadership roles. His most recent position was working for his son, Dusty, as the marketing director of the Lehi Pointe and American Fork Chick-fil-A restaurants. The Chamber has decided to honor Vern by adding his name to its Volunteer of the Year Award.

I have immense respect for the business owners and entrepreneurs of our community. It takes a large amount of bravery to venture into the unknown to start and run a business. You do it because you are driven, because you are passionate about something, because you want to control your own destiny, or because you want to create value for people. Whatever the reasons, it is because of you that we have communities where people want to live. Because of our businesses, our residents enjoy relatively easy access to a variety of comforts, amenities, and necessities.

Brad Frost

American Fork Mayor

Our businesses drive our economy forward and push the boundaries of innovation.

Running your own business is a risky venture. The reality is sometimes it doesn’t work out. And even if it does work out it’s often after years of sacrifice, fatigue, late hours, and risk. At times you may personally go without just so your employees can have what they need. It takes incredible people to start and run a business and I am grateful to those of you who have done just that in American Fork. Our businesses drive our economy forward and push the boundaries of innovation. The life we enjoy today comes from the entrepreneurs and innovators of the past. As a business owner myself, I want to say you have my utmost gratitude and admiration. As Mayor, I want to say that we are committed to helping you the best we can. We are working to streamline permit and development processes to make things easier for new and existing businesses. American Fork City is filled with incredible people, including our businesses. We are grateful for your service to our residents, especially those of you who go above and beyond by serving, donating, and participating in chamber and city functions. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all great success.

local business spotlight:

doug smith subaru

At Doug Smith Subaru, we strive to embody the Subaru Love Promise. We do this by being committed to the customer experience and staying connected to our community in a personal and tangible way. Subaru started the Love Promise because as a brand, we are focused on the respect and value for people. Our business isn’t just about “cars”—it’s about people getting where they need to go. And while the right vehicle can get people to their destinations comfortably, safely, and powerfully, we also care about what a vehicle represents—valuing the people who are trying to get to that destination or goal. We value our customers, our community, and the world, and we care about where we’re all headed—together! To accomplish this, we have partnered with many charities, organizations, and schools over the years to benefit our local community. Here are just a few examples of what the Love Promise means for us: Many of you know about or have been recipients of support that we have provided for our local High Schools, specifically the long-standing support of the American Fork High School Marching Band. What you may not know is that we recently adopted classrooms at Lakeview Elementary in Payson, a school that lacks the federal funding that many other schools in our state receive. We also donated school supplies and set up donation links for those outside of the dealership to help classrooms and teachers who had a huge need for their classrooms. We found out about Millie’s Princess Foundation last year when one of our employee’s daughters, Sofia, had a cancer relapse. Since then, we have partnered with Millie’s Princess Foundation and ‘Skate for Cancer’ to help raise awareness and money for families dealing with childhood cancer. Sophia is now cancer free, and we continue to work with this charity to help others who need resources and support. We have partnered with the Humane Society of Utah for many years in helping “underdogs”. These underdogs are typically injured, more senior in age, or have disabilities and have a harder time getting adopted. With our partnership, we are able to donate money to cover costs for vaccinations, adoption fees, or supplies that are needed to help as many pets get adopted as we can. Last November, we worked with Tabitha’s Way, our local food bank, to facilitate a food drive at the dealership—collecting enough food and resources to provide more than 13,400 meals for our community. We are also proud to support the Autism Council of Utah every year through the Subaru Share the Love Event, which takes place at the end of November through December. Through our last event we were able to donate $50,000 to support the council in their efforts to raise awareness and provide much needed services to the autistic community and their families. Being able to sell and service cars to the community is one thing, but we believe in being more than just a retailer. We are committed to doing all we can to live up to our Love Promise!

A lot has happened in the first four months of my term as mayor of Alpine. One of the areas we are focusing on is better communication and engagement with our residents. We are sending out weekly emails updating our residents on our Planning Commission and City Council Agendas. We have also created the following citizen committees to encourage community engagement: • Lambert Park Conservation Committee • Main Street Beautification Committee • Historic Committee to preserve historic structures in our city

Carla Merrill Alpine Mayor

It is truly awe inspiring and wonderful to be a part of such a great community where so many people serve to make the place we live so amazing.

Spring 2022

In addition, we are continuing to work on improving our parks and open spaces. We have just approved four pickleball courts to be placed at Creekside Park, and we will also be installing a new pavilion and playground equipment at Healey Park. Our Trail Committee has worked hard to add miles of new singletrack trails in our parks and public open spaces. And thanks to a generous donor, we have added Judy’s Trail, a 2-mile walking trail, through Lambert Park. In the spirit of community service, we recently hosted a Trail Work day where we had 366 work hours donated by our hard working citizens. It is truly awe inspiring and wonderful to be a part of such a great community where so many people serve to make the place we live so amazing. If you are interested in any of these or other service opportunities in our community, please come by City Hall or email me at: cmerrill@alpinecity.org.

The recent tumult of the past few years has not stopped Cedar Hills from moving forward and improving. In fact, the overall financial health of the city has continually improved over the last two years rather than suffered. We saw the opening of several businesses that benefit our residents and neighbors and will see more appear in the coming years. We were able to make significant park renovations, including an overhaul at Doral Park and substantial improvements at our “historic” Heritage Park have already started. 2022 is going to see the opening of our new executive short course at our Cedar Hills Golf Club, which will be named the Turkey Trap – a nod to the Adams Turkey Ranch that occupied the area beginning in 1938. This will be a six-hole short course suitable for players of all ages and abilities. Spring 2022

I am also happy to announce that Cedar Hills has signed a contract with UTOPIA Fiber, and work is already underway. Our residents could start receiving high-speed fiber internet in less than a year! With so many people working from home, and with schooling now remotely possible, this will help improve the lives of our residents and save them money in the process. We are looking forward to celebrating our annual Family Festival June 6th-11th, and I want to thank the amazing committee of residents and our generous sponsors who make this celebration possible. The city’s greatest asset continues to be its residents. We have wonderful people with generous hearts who have pulled together to support and care for each other and guide each other through these rough years and will continue to do so in the coming years. As Helen Keller said, “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” In Cedar Hills, we are building community together, and the future of our city looks bright.

mj pianos

Meet Matthew Johnson, founder of MJ Pianos in American Fork, Utah. He is a Registered Piano Technician, and C. Bechstein Concert/Factory Trained Technician, and he has been tuning and repairing pianos for over a decade now. He started his piano service business in 2011 with one vision in mind: to create a sense of togetherness for families and communities by sharing quality piano music. He is an expert and knows each and every aspect of the piano. The thought to begin selling pianos occurred to him when he realized that he understood pianos inside and out better than any piano salesman he knew. Building upon his initial vision, in 2021 he and his wife, Eliza, decided to expand their business and start selling pianos in addition to tuning and repairing them. Their mission is to help Utah families create lasting memories, build a stronger sense of togetherness, and cultivate talent through quality pianos and piano services. Specializing in fine European pianos, Matt has helped thousands of families Play Like Never Before with the best pianos and piano services available. Both he and his wife are American Fork natives and have three little boys with another little boy on the way.

Over the past three months, several businesses have opened up in Highland, two of them being dog grooming businesses. Olive Dog Salons opened on January 10, 2022 across from Roxberry Juice. In the Macey’s shopping center, Kibbles & Cuts opened on February 21, 2022. Both grooming businesses opened because of the high demand for dog wash and grooming services in the Highland area, with both businesses reporting they are scheduling for approximately one to two weeks out.

Kurt Ostler Highland Mayor

I want to welcome these two new businesses to Highland and recommend our local dog (and cat) lovers go and let them earn your business.

Spring 2022

Olive Dog Salons is the first grooming store for owners Joe and Brooklyn Lee, but they hope to open another one shortly. The friendly staff greets you upon walking in, with the front area having more of a veterinarian’s office feeling. They even have a treat selection for nervous dogs. They have five groomers and use the best premium organic shampoo and conditioner. The grooming and wash are done in a private setting, and upon picking up your dog, you can pick out a toy and treat. That way your dog will have something to look forward to and enjoy every time they visit Olive Dog Salons. They are open Monday – Friday, 9am – 6pm. olivedogsalons.com Kibbles & Cuts is more of a retail store setting, with a large window by the checkout register, where you can see the groomer as they wash and trim your dog or cat. Yes, you read that correctly; they also do cat grooming. Kibbles & Cuts has basic service and VIP treatment wherein they do nails, teeth brushing, and re-moisturizing treatment. The Highland location is Kibble & Cuts’ third store with others in Sandy and South Jordan. They also stock grain and additive-free specialized dog food. Their motto is “Start each day on the right paw!” They are open Monday – Saturday, 8am – 7pm. kibblesandcuts.com

american fork

high school

You could argue that the last three years of high school have been more disruptive for the Class of 2022 than any class in our school’s 119 year history. Pundits around the world use phrases and words like learning loss, mental illness, learning gap, and apathy when describing young people today. As principal of American Fork High School, I have had a front row seat to watch how difficult these past two years have been for our youth. School closures, social strife, sickness, loss, loneliness, political polarization, have been just as exhausting to teenagers as it has to adults. I have also been witness to incredible resilience among our youth. So many of us thought that kids had gone through too much and so we tried to shield them from any kind of challenge. We quickly saw that we were doing a disservice to them. What they really needed was connection. When young people feel meaningfully connected to people or a goal, they can accomplish anything. This year, our goal at American Fork was to not only connect with students, but create a space for them to connect with each other, and to help connect them to the curriculum. This year has been full of making these human connections. Our students have bonded over challenging academic classes, demanding athletic teams, theatrical and musical performances and competitive club competitions. We’ve also done a lot of activities that we used to think were extra but now we realize are essential…like dances. Human connection has happened in little ways all year and was felt in a big way when our boys basketball team completed their Cinderella run, winning state, in front of a huge crowd at the Marriott Center. We are excited to gather there again for graduation and recognize how we bounced back. It’s all about combining hard work with human connections. This is what we call school. This is how our kids heal and grow. If it’s not hard, there’s no growth, but connection helps with the hard. We at AFHS are proud to be in the business of connection. We are proud to support kids in doing hard things. We are proud to be Cavemen.

Peter Glahn Principal polaris

high school

During the 2021-2022 school year, Polaris West High School (American Fork) and Polaris High School (Orem) merged into one central location in American Fork. Our new building provides a learning environment that considers the various physical, emotional, and academic needs of our students so they can experience success. Although considered an alternative high school, as part of Alpine School District, graduates of Polaris receive an accredited High School Diploma. Similar to more traditional high schools, we provide bus transportation for students throughout the district, in person instruction, and lunch. At Polaris, we provide resources that consider the reality that each student is an important individual. We specialize in helping students recover credit deficiencies by providing academic support through small class sizes and expert teachers. In addition, our wellness room, “The Zen Den”, provides a space where students utilize various tools to regulate their emotions. Our Closet and Pantry are stocked with donations from a wide variety of donors throughout the community that provide clothing and food resources free of charge to our students. We have found that by supporting our students by removing some of the barriers that have prevented many of them from achieving academic success in the past, our students develop into lifelong learners. With these supports, our seniors have become leaders both in school and throughout the community. Last year, we had 52 students graduate early, many of whom seek post-secondary educational opportunities in the community like MTECH. This year we are on track to see similar results. Our graduation rate continues to improve year over year. We are so proud of our students, especially our seniors, who are resilient and dedicated.

lone peak

high school

The students at Lone Peak High School have been blessed to have had a great school year this year! The year has brought some challenges, no doubt, but our students and staff have weathered each proverbial storm very well. With the school year winding down in the next few weeks, we are beginning to set our sights towards the next school year - a year we look forward to with hope and excitement as we try to put the stresses and challenges of education during a pandemic further in the rearview mirror. As we reflect on the year, we ask, “What have we learned from our experiences this year?” First, we have learned that connection to others and to the school matters, and that we need even more and more connections as we seek improved attendance, continued participation in activities, and meaningful relationships on campus. Our clubs, teams, and performing groups have seen great success this year as students have worked hard together to chase their goals and dreams. It has been incredible to fill our classes, halls, gyms, auditorium, and stadium with students at full capacity. Second, we have had confirmed to us the importance and impact that a qualified, caring, and capable faculty has in the lives of students. We celebrate the efforts of our teachers and staff who have worked so hard to provide meaningful learning experiences for our students. The adults working on behalf of Lone Peak students are incredible! Our students benefit daily from the influence of amazing teachers, coaches, and support staff. Third, we have learned that things often change without our choosing, and that we need to be “flexible, yet focused” in our pursuit of excellence. There are many things that act as challenges, barriers, or impediments in our quest to live out our mission. Though that is true, there are likewise so many opportunities, growth experiences, and positive interactions and relationships that move us forward towards a reality of endless possibilities for our students. We have learned that a healthy level of optimism and hard work, coupled with a growth mindset helps push us through these demanding times. As the sun sets on the school year of 2021-2022 and will soon rise on the school year of 2022-2023, our Knights are eager and ready for the opportunities that await and stand ready to charge on into the fight.

Todd Dawson Principal American

heritage

American Heritage School’s mission is to serve parents worldwide in developing the hearts, minds, and bodies of students to realize their divine potential. Our teachers are people who strive toward the character and culture of Christ, and that is fundamental to why they are able to connect with and influence our students so effectively. Providing more students access to these types of teachers is why we are opening a new campus in downtown Salt Lake City this fall. Located next to the Conference Center, the school will be home to 200 K–9 students. It’s also why we are launching an entirely new learning experience platform for students across the world. LiftED is distance learning that surrounds students with live, loving teachers and remote and local classmates who cheer each other on. Students need teachers who work side-by-side with parents to help students know who they truly are, who help them to recognize their magnificent potential to bless and inspire others. To learn more about our three campuses (American Fork, Salt Lake, and online), head to AmericanHeritageSchool.org. As a representative example of these powerful teachers, Coach Paora Winitana was just awarded the 2022 UHSAA 2A Gold Star Coach of the Year award from a pool of about 250 coaches across all sports from the 30 Class 2A schools. According to the UHSAA, the award is intended to help schools promote sportsmanship by celebrating and recognizing coaches who demonstrate a consistent track record of “inspiring students and [of] being a positive role model.” While Coach Winitana strives to instill Christian character in his boys and girls basketball teams, he also has a regular pattern of reaching out to students not on his teams and helping them to feel seen and valued. It’s providing a student who has never played on a team with circumstances that allowed him to make three 3-pointers in a spring basketball league game. It’s giving a student with a heart condition the opportunity to join the team as a videographer and truly integrating that student into the team—into the locker room, on the team bus, at games. Coach Winitana is an example of why American Heritage School is so intent on spreading its unique blend of spirit and scholarship to as many families and students as possible. When committed teachers are expected and encouraged to reach the whole child—heart, mind, and body—truly remarkable transformation occurs.
