MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Highland City is an area with a unique history when compared with other communities in Utah. While many early Utah pioneers built towns and then farmed the land around them, the people who settled the Highland area were homesteaders who established farms and built their houses right on their farms. The city’s first permanent residents, the Adamsons, were from Scotland and gave the area its name because they felt it resembled the Scottish highlands. It is this history that the city of Highland has embraced through its annual celebration, Highland Fling Days. Events such as the Utah State Hammer Championship & Highland Games remind us of our heritage, of those who built our community and helped make it the wonderful place it is today. Many of our residents - whether long-time or new move-ins - have ancestors who lived and worked in the Highland area. In an effort to preserve this history, the Highland Historical Society was recently established “to preserve and (share) the past of Highland City for a better present and future.” As you enjoy the 2016 Highland Fling Days celebration, we encourage those of you with deep roots in Highland to reflect on your own histories, write them down and share them with the historical society. They can be reached by calling President Charlie Greenland at 801-913-5200. Highland Fling Days is a time to celebrate the past, but it is also a chance to bring our community together and look to the future. This year’s Fling theme is “Power of Youth.” Let’s celebrate our youth and their leadership abilities to keep Highland vibrant and growing. In 2017, Highland Fling Days will celebrate its 40th anniversary, and we encourage you to send in your feedback regarding what you like about the celebration and what we can change to make it even better.Change the last sentence of the fourth paragraph to read “You can do so by sending an email to me at mayor@highlandcity.org or our Events Coordinator, Kaity Lavaja at kaity@highlandcity.org As this year’s celebration approaches, please take time to go through this magazine and read about all the different activities that will be available to residents during the week of the 2016 Highland Fling Days. From the Family Adventure Race to the Backyard Garden Tour, Youth Night in the Park and the final fireworks display, there are activities sure to please all ages. Enjoy the time with your families. Highland Mayor Mark S. Thompson

HISTORY OF HIGHLAND

Located on a bench area of the Wasatch Mountain Range in northern Utah County, Highland was settled by homesteaders in the 1870s. Some of the first settlers chose the name Highland because the area reminded them of the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. John Poole built the first house in the area in 1875. Highland was officially incorporated as a city in 1977 and is home to about 16,000 residents. Highland is located at the mouth of American Fork Canyon and sits on a high plateau at the base of Mt. Timpanogos. It is home to numerous trails, including a portion of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a trail following the shoreline formed by the ancient Lake Bonneville that will eventually stretch more than 280 miles. Timpanogos Cave National Monument, a collection of caverns accessed by a 1.5-mile hike up a mountainside in American Fork Canyon, is accessed through Highland, as is the Alpine Scenic Loop, a beautiful drive winding through the mountains east of the city. Inside the city are a variety of parks for residents to enjoy including the Town Center Splash Pad, which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. Residents come together to celebrate the founding of their community during Highland Fling Days, an annual week-long celebration full of activities that include a grand parade, a fine art show, a 5K run, entertainment and fireworks.

Grand MarshalS Jewetts named parade grand marshals Highland residents Ron and Kim Jewett have been selected to serve as the grand marshals of the 2016 Highland Fling Days Grand Parade scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 6. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Highland Elementary School and proceed to Heritage Park. In 1996, Ron and Kim Jewett took their family on a ski vacation for spring break. They stayed with friends in Highland and were so impressed with the area that before they left for home, they bought a house. They spent the next few months tying up loose ends in Arizona so they could make the move. Ron began serving in the community right away by coaching Little League and working in the Boy Scouts, receiving the Ossie Nelson Award from the Alpine District. He served on the Highland City Council from 2000 to 2004, with one of his responsibilities being the Highland Fling. Ron served on the Highland City Economic Development Committee and as chairman of the Highland Fling from 2011 to 2014. Ron enlisted Kim’s help with the Highland Fling while he was on the city council, and she continued to serve on the committee until 2014. Kim has also served on the 2013 BYU Women’s Conference Service Subcommittee and with Friends in Harmony – a singing group that presents sacred programs to church groups and secular programs at assisted-living facilities. The Jewetts are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ron is a general contractor and has built homes in Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. He also manages a family commercial construction company and books and runs a fishing lodge in Alaska. Kim has been blessed to be a homemaker and a stay-at-home mom to their four children. They are enjoying being grandparents to their 10 grandchildren (number 11 due in August!). Ron and Kim have loved being a part of Highland for 20 years and are honored to be chosen as the grand marshals for the 2016 Highland Fling Days Grand Parade.
