BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
Your Birth. Your Way. My last pregnancy caused me to be a bit more anxious due to my age. During my lengthy labor, the nurses were so patient, responsive, and attentive to my needs. Even though I had given birth previously, I was grateful for the extra time they took to educate, empower, and encourage me. Each nurse listened to my desires and concerns, and explained birth and pain management options. I can tell you the name of every team member because they left a lasting impression. Their dedication and knowledge were crucial in allowing me to have the birth experience I desired. Mayor’s Message Welcome one and all to the 2017 Highland Fling! This year we celebrate our city’s Ruby Jubilee - its 40th anniversary of being a city - with the theme “Celebrating our Past, Looking to the Future.” It matters not whether you’ve lived here all your life, just moved in or are simply passing through our city. Please join us in celebrating Highland City’s 40th year. Highland City is an area with a unique history when compared with other communities in Utah. While many early Utah pioneers built towns and then farmed the land around them, the people who settled the Highland area were homesteaders who established farms and built their houses right on their farms. The city’s first permanent residents, the Adamsons, were from Scotland and gave the area its name because they felt it resembled the Scottish highlands. It is this history that the city of Highland has embraced through its annual celebration, High-
land Fling. Events such as the Strongman Competition & Highland Games remind us of our heritage, of those who built our community and helped make it the wonderful place it is today. Throughout the 2017 Highland Fling celebration, there will be events that celebrate the past while also anticipating the city’s future. I personally invite all Highland residents to attend our special Ruby Jubilee Kickoff Event on Saturday, July 29. I also invite you all to our fabulous 40th Anniversary Dinner Celebration on Friday, Aug. 4, where past mayors will be honored, dinner served and music provided by the Utah Swing Orchestra. Be sure to make your reservation to attend this gala event by July 15 at www.highlandcity.org. Also, as part of honoring Highland’s past, we will install the present and past mayors’ portraits in Highland City Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 1. The public is invited to attend the unveiling of this new exhibit featuring portraits of all Highland

City mayors. The new Highland Historical Society Museum opened this year and will be open during our festivities on Saturday, Aug. 5, to provide a look back at the past through its various exhibits. The arts council coordinated local artists to paint several historic Highland homes, and these paintings will be displayed during the Fine Art Show. The hope for the future is in our children, and this year’s Fling is encouraging kids to access their creativity through the Kids Night & Box Arcade event. Local youth with have the opportunity to create their own arcade games out of cardboard and boxes and have other youth play them during the Box Arcade. See the Kids Night & Box Arcade event listing in this magazine for more information. A youth dance with fun prizes and a local youth DJ will provide a fun celebration on Friday evening. A new layout of activities at Heritage Park on Saturday with nearly double the number of vendors and activities from last year should
provide even more fun and a better community feel. There are many, many other activities and events for residents to enjoy during this year’s Highland Fling, from the Family Adventure Race and Backyard Garden Tour to the Play Day Rodeo and Firemen’s Spray. Be sure to go through this magazine and find the events you and your family will most enjoy. Come celebrate Highland’s past and future with us! Highland Mayor Mark S. Thompson

History of Highland Located on a bench area of the Wasatch Mountain Range in northern Utah County, Highland was settled by homesteaders in the 1870s. Some of the first settlers chose the name Highland because the area reminded them of the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. John Poole built the first house in the area in 1875. Highland was officially incorporated as a city in 1977 and is home to about 16,000 residents. Highland is located at the mouth of American Fork Canyon and sits on a high plateau at the base of Mt. Timpanogos. It is home to numerous trails, including a portion of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a trail following the shoreline formed by the ancient Lake Bonneville that will eventually stretch more than 280 miles. Timpanogos Cave National Monument, a collection of caverns accessed by a 1.5-mile hike up a mountainside in American Fork Canyon, is accessed through Highland, as is the Alpine Scenic Loop, a beau-
tiful drive winding through the mountains east of the city. Inside the city are a variety of parks for residents to enjoy including the Town Center Splash Pad, which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. Residents come together to celebrate the founding of their community during the Highland Fling, an annual week-long celebration full of activities that include a grand parade, a fine art show, a 5K run, entertainment and fireworks.

Parade Grand Marshal Don R. LeBaron
Highland City has named Don R. LeBaron, the city’s first mayor, as grand marshal of the 2017 Highland Fling Grand Parade. The parade will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 10 a.m. Donald Ralph LeBaron was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Barnwell, Alberta, Canada. He lived there until age 18 when he came to Utah to attend Brigham Young University. While there, he met Rae Marie Jerling, who would later become his wife. After two years at BYU, Don served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in northern California and southern Oregon from 1947 to 1949. He and Rae Marie were married on Sept. 29, 1949, one month after he returned home. While Don was on his mission, Rae Marie’s father died, and Don decided to take over the Jerling family farm in Highland. It was there that Don and Rae Marie made their first home. “I’d never farmed much before so I had to learn how to plow and till the ground and take the rocks off and plant and so forth,” Don said. He took some classes at BYU to learn more about farming, but he soon determined that farming would not make enough to support his family. Don decided to return to BYU and he eventually obtained his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He continued farming until he was done with school and offered a job in Idaho, making it necessary to leave Highland. The farm was eventually sold. He spent six months working for the Phillips Petroleum Company, Atomic Energy Division, in Idaho Falls before taking a job with Sperry Rand in Salt Lake City. Don and Rae Marie moved back to Highland temporarily before purchasing a home in Kearns where they lived for a couple of years. Rae Marie’s mother then offered them a piece of ground in Highland, and they decided to make the city their permanent home. They built a house on the plot of land and lived there from 1960 to 1980; they then built a new home just east of where they had been living. Don and Rae Marie were married for 37 years and had six children: Donald Ray, Annette, Dennis, Gerald, Alan and Kathy Marie. Rae Marie died in 1986 of cancer. Don retired from his job in 1988. In August of 1977, the town of Highland was incorporated through an action of the Utah County Commission. Don was asked at that time to serve as town president until the following November when 12 - Highland Fling 2017
the first mayor would be elected. He decided to run for the office and won over his opponent by only two votes. He took office as Highland’s first mayor in 1978 and held that office until 1982. None of the services that a city needs were in place when Highland became a city, and Don and his council were tasked Don R. LeBaron with creating them. They contracted with other cities and the county for police and fire protection. In addition to these issues, Don said one of his first challenges as mayor was working with a company that needed gravel and wanted a permit to mine it in an area east of the city. The city saw large gravel trucks driving on its roads as a safety issue and wanted to preserve the look of its mountainside, and the matter ended up in court. The city attorney managed to delay the case for several years and the company eventually gave up the fight. “It would have been an ugly scar and there wouldn’t have been anybody living there,” Don said. In 1982, some members of the community asked Don to seek election to the Utah House of Representatives where he represented the cities of Highland, Alpine and Cedar Hills as well as areas of American Fork, Lehi and Pleasant Grove. He served in the legislature for a total of 10 years. It was there that he met RoseMary Thomas, who was working as the reading clerk in the House of Representatives and as a secretary in Legislative Research and General Counsel in the Utah State Capitol. They were married on Aug. 22, 1986. Over the years, Don has served in many positions of responsibility in the LDS Church including bishop, high councilman and stake patriarch. He and his wife RoseMary have served missions together for the LDS Church in the European Mediterranean Area, at Temple Square in Salt Lake City and in Johannesburg, South Africa. They currently live in American Fork.

Highland Fling Kickoff Ruby Jubilee: Celebrating the Past, Looking to the Future You won’t want to miss the 2017 Highland Fling Kickoff Event. As we celebrate Highland City’s 40th anniversary, you will get excited to enjoy a week of festivities, discover what a Ruby Jubilee is and what it means to “Celebrate our Past and Look to the Future!” At this event, we are fortunate to have David Dalley Jr. presenting an amazing combination of music, inspiring words and mixed media. David, or Bubba as he was affectionately known by while growing up right here in Highland, is now an instructional designer who has been working in media production for almost 20 years. With a bachelor’s degree in choral music education from
Brigham Young University, Dalley’s music education path was shortlived when he became the director of operations and producer for “The Glenn Beck Program.” Ten years later, he had the unique opportunity of creating and designing an all-new internet radio station, YLDSR, that became one of the most-listened-to inspirational stations in America. Daley received a master’s degree in instructional design and technology from Full Sail University that combined all his education and experience into an area which he is passionate about. He said, “It thrills me to use technology as the foundation of creating effective, efficient and engaging instructional experiences.”
While Sponsored by Dalley did not solely grow up in Highland, it 1 RUBY is Highland for event attendance that he considers home. In his words, “Living in Highland was life-changing for me.” His Dalley family roots run deep on the Highland farmlands and his father still lives in Highland today. Backyard Garden Tours There have been many beautiful backyards cultivated over the years in our city. Through the Backyard Garden Tours, you will experience the work of dedicated gardeners who love beauty, the earth, working the soil and improving their surroundings to add to the beauty of our city. Now in its third year, the Highland Fling Garden Tour has some fun surprises in store for 2017. At the Summers’ home, with clever use of authentic antiques, you will find a miniature gas station on one stop around their modest-sized yard that is packed with fun for young and old. At the Webb home, there is a tree house that is linked seamlessly into the paths winding through the yard. Their wandering paths tell a new story every time with something new blooming from spring until fall. At the Holdman home, you will find a forest with hidden trails and a very nature-inspired arrangement that begs you to explore. The Williams are doing double service this year as they participate in our garden tour after being part of the Utah County Hidden Garden Tour in June. Of special note is the unique pizza oven at the Williams. But this is just a small tease. There is not room to highlight all the treasures you will find at each of the homes on our tour. Our tour is small and can easily be seen in one evening, but be sure to take the time to wander. Each yard has a story that is so fun to discover. Please note, the tour has moved earlier in the week to Tuesday and Wednesday to accommodate the fun-
filled Fling calendar. Be sure to make this a part of your tradition. The addresses of the participating Highland gardens are:

Family Adventure Race 1 RUBY for spectators
2 RUBIES for participants
The Family Adventure Race at Highland Glen is a family-oriented Sprint Adventure Race with challenging and fun legs to test you and your family’s physical strength and mental acuity. This race is similar to the Adventure Races being held across the country. However, the Family Adventure Race is geared toward families who love the outdoors and adventure. Teams will consist of a least one adult and up to six kids, although other combinations will be considered. There is no age limit for the kids, but the kids will have to be able to ride a bike on gravel roads. Younger kids may have to be transported in bike carriers and backpacks. Older kids (8 to 16) will probably have more fun, but smaller kids are welcome as well. The race will require approximately three hours to complete. Teams will follow race clues while biking, canoeing and trekking to each checkpoint where they will complete challenging puzzles and fun tasks. Routes, tasks and challenges will remain secret until race day. The challenges will consist of physical and mental tasks that must be completed before moving on. Some challenges have to be completed by the kids and others by the adults. Some of the more difficult tasks will require the whole team to complete.

There will be events and entertainment all day on the Entertainment Stage in Heritage Park on Saturday, August 5. Come and enjoy a wide variety of entertainment! Appearing at 8:50 p.m. will be the headlining act of the evening: Joshua Creek. With its unique brand of lyrical storytelling, Americana-style music and threepart harmonies, Joshua Creek has built a strong and loyal fan base during the last 12 years while receiving praise from music press, radio and concert promoters. The band has released six studio albums and one live DVD with reviewers often describing Jeff Hinton’s lead vocals as a cross between John Denver and James Taylor. One host aptly described Joshua Creek as “like listening to a Norman Rockwell painting.” Their songs receive regional and national airplay, including the No. 1 Country-Gospel hit “What Kinda Car?” and the award-winning “Love You Son.” Other achievements include an FCMA Pearl Award for “Songwriter of the Year” and placements of their songs in national television shows and indie movies. Joshua Creek is: Jeff Hinton, lead vocals/guitar; Quint Randle, backing vocals/bass; Ron Saltmarsh, lead guitar/musical director/backing vocals; and James Hollister, drums/cajon.
