VOCAL POINT

From the first note, Vocal Point turns heads. This nine-man acapella group sponsored by the Brigham Young University School of Music has thrilled audiences for 20 years with their fresh, upbeat sound.   Vocal Point boasts nine albums, including their newest release “Lead Thou Me On”, which is a compilation of hymns and other inspirational songs. Keith Evans, a member of the group said of their new album: “Vocal Point has wanted to create an allhymns album for some time, so we are thrilled we’ve finally gotten the chance to put it together this year. The album features some remastered hymns from Vocal Point’s past, as well as a slew of new hymns arranged and recorded specifically for this project. A profound spirit accompanied each hymn’s creation,

and we hope those who listen feel that same spirit with which we recorded them.”   Vocal Point gained national recognition when they became a popular contest on the reality show “The Sing Off” during its second season. With their lively and entertaining arrangements, Vocal Point made it to the top five groups. It was the only group to rely solely on their own arrangements instead of the arrangements of the show’s in-house producers. Their performances from the show are all available on iTunes.

THE VIVALDI QUARTET

The Vivaldi Quartet, coached by Denise Willey, has soloed with six symphonies, performed at the National Governors’ Conference, and won Best of State for three years. Each child has performed with Suzuki Youth Orchestra; Noah and Madison as principals.   Elizajane Schetselar, 12, attends Lincoln Academy in Cedar Hills and studies with Denise Willey. She has soloed with Utah Symphony, Utah Valley Orchestra and Lyceum. An excellent student and composer, she also enjoys soccer, swimming, and playing viola and piano.   Noah Schetselaar, 12, attends Lincoln Academy in Cedar Hills and studies with Kayson Brown. He is principal cellist for Lyceum and performed in the concerto concert 3 years running. An award-winning artist and excellent student, he also enjoys soccer and skiing.

YOUTH CHOIR The Lehi Family Week Youth Choir is made up of 200 youth from all over Lehi. The Choir came to life at last year’s 2011 Lehi Family Week Celebration with Linda and Richard Eyre as the guest speakers.   Trisha Garrett and Anjanette Butler are the director and pianist respectively. Trisha has had years of leading high school choirs and is a very gifted director. The kids respond quickly to her choral direction and enjoy each of the five practices.

6

Alex Heyrend, 13, attends Mountain Ridge in Highland and studies with David Porter. He is co-concertmaster for Lyceum and performed in the concerto concert 3 years running. An excellent student and scout, he also enjoys running, basketball and triathlons. Madison Marshall, 13, is home-schooled in Lehi and studies with Denise Willey and Dr. David Dalton. Principal violist for Lyceum and an avid reader and awardwinning writer, she started the Pickwick Society for young authors and loves performing in theater groups.

This group of kids are learning not only the melody but the harmonies and split into multi harmonies. They are also memorizing the words of the songs which will add so much to their performances. At the beginning of each rehearsal, we have a guest speaker who shares his thoughts and inspires the kids to focus and work hard.   If you want to become a part of this great choir, contact Heather Miller at hdmemail@yahoo.com. Practices will begin in September 2013.

After many years in their successful careers, David and Serenity Jones were ready for a change. David had been working long and late hours for Supersonic Car Wash and Serenity had been working in an assisted living center. Though they had good jobs, they wanted something with more flexibility and control of their own futures. In July 2011, they took the plunge and opened up their own franchise.   Though Batteries Plus is a national chain, the vast majority of their locations are independently owned and operated. David and Serenity have taken part in many local events, including Lehi’s Foam Days and Trick or Treating recently on Main Street, in which they Lon W. Sorensen • 444 W. If you’re not a believer in blind dates, you should let Keith and Tamara Greenwood convince you otherwise. When they were both attending Brigham Young University, Tamara’s roommates all drew each other’s names out of a hat around Valentine’s Day, and then got to choose a date for the person they drew. Tamara’s roommate chose a boy from her hometown—Keith Greenwood.   For the rest of the night, they dressed as kids, had their wrists tied together and enjoyed their first date, which they say was love at first sight. They had dinner (still bound at the wrist) and played sardines as couples. They couldn’t find anyone else, which gave them a lot of time to talk. They married nine months later to the day. Keith went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Recreation Admin and Tamara in Elementary Education and Mathematics.   They are now the parents of three boys and two girls, ages 6-15. They love spending time together in the outdoors, and can often be found in the pool or the soccer field. Their children play on local soccer leagues and their 15-year old is on the school’s swim

team. Keith loves living in Utah because of all the hills for mountain biking. After a long day, they love to play board games and eat ice cream together.   Keith is a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America. He is an Eagle Scout who has also served as a Scoutmaster and still serves on the local scouting committee. Tamara keeps track of all of the advancements, such as merit badges and ranks, for 45-50 scouts. Their sons are also committed to scouting, with one son earning his Eagle Scout at only 13 years old.

Travis and Karen Eggett’s story didn’t start in the traditional way. Though they grew up only about five minutes away in Lindon, Utah, they did not meet until they were both in college.   When Travis met Karen at Utah Valley University, he had no idea that she was only 16. He had recently returned from an LDS mission to Georgia, the same one in which Karen’s father had served. She was only 17 when they married. Today, they are the parents of six children, ages 3-15. Karen jokes that by the time they had planned to marry, he didn’t know her age and she didn’t know his last name.   Travis grew up doing landscape work with his father, and grew up loving nature and wildlife. He originally envisioned become a veterinarian, but ended up studying technology.   The Eggetts spent a year abroad in Holland with two small children as part of Travis’ work with a call center there. They ended up learning some of the language and adopting some of the local customs. This means they give gifts during December twice, once on Christmas and once on Saint Nicholas Day or Sinterklaas,

as it is known in Dutch. On the night of December 5th, children leave out their shoes to find them filled with candy and presents on the morning of December 6th.   The Eggetts love spending time together, and their oldest, McKayla loves acting in community and school theater productions, including “Beauty and the Beast”, “Much Ado about Nothing”, and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. Travis teaches community classes in hunting, helping local residents learn how to safely handle firearms for hunting. This involves evening classes and hunting excursion on the weekends.

•Prepare for Kindergarten •Do Art, Crafts and Science •Practice Manners and Sharing •Make Friends AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN!!! Transportation offered to some schools.

Before Melissa met Israel, she knew his family. While serving as an LDS missionary in Washington DC, she got to know the Gonzales family and saw pictures of their son Israel. When she later attended Brigham Young University, she recognized him when they crossed paths and the rest is history.   In addition to raising their two young sons, Michael (3) and Mark (1), Israel works as a Spanish court interpreter in Salt Lake City and Melissa works parttime as a senior analyst for Oracle. Beyond work, Israel sings with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and recently finished heading up a Latino Cultural Celebration that was held in the Conference Center on Temple Square.   Melissa is heavily involved in politics, and created two groups: “Moms for Mitt” and Utah Women for Romney, (utahwomenforromney.com). She has spent a good deal of time campaigning for Mitt Romney and for Mia Love on a local level. She is on the community HOA board, was a state delegate for the Republican Party and attended the national convention this year.   They sustain their busy schedules because of the support of both of their families, who live in the area. They meet often for Sunday dinner with one family or the other. Many of Israel’s relatives on his mother’s side still live in Peru, and so they have taken several family excursions down there.   Because of this cultural heritage, they have adopted many Peruvian traditions, including the way that they celebrate Christmas. First, they celebrate it in the Peruvian way by having a large meal on Christmas Eve and then staying up late, opening presents at the stroke of midnight. Then, they sleep and have a traditional American Christmas by waking up early and opening presents Christmas morning.

LFW Punch Cards Why LFW Punch Cards?   As we were planning in January for this November’s Lehi Family Week, our committee wanted to encourage families to participate not only on Sunday but offer an incentive to attend more events during the week.   An idea was suggested to offer a “punch card”. At each event, families can verify that they have attended the event by getting their card punched so when they participate at the family dance on Saturday, November 24 at the North Gym of the Legacy Center, they can participate in the raffle prizes.   We also wanted to evaluate the participation rate of LFW and learn how to improve it for next year!!   LFW Punch Cards will be handed out on Sunday, Nov. 18th at the Vocal Point event at Willowcreek Middle School. They will also be available at the Legacy Center and the City Office.

Family Week is a great event to emphasize the value of family. It does not matter if we have ten children and a hundred grandchildren or if we have no one and are by ourselves. We are all apart of a great family. We want every citizen to feel they are a part of this large Lehi family and no one should be left out.   I look at the joy my own family brings to me and how proud I am of each and everyone of them. I look forward to their visits and pray for them daily. I also pray for the citizens of Lehi hoping their lives will be blessed with those thing that each one needs individually.   I am gratetful for the way so many individuals and citizens have bless my life in this city. I also pray for the guidance to do the right things and to be the best example a father, grandfather and a leader of this community can be. I want to see our Lehi family grow with a goal in mind to share, love and respect each other with the highest values and standards. I want our children to know that they are loved and Lehi is a safe harbor for them night and day.   I want everyone to feel that they are protected from the evils of the world and that their family is important. Family week helps to accomplish this.   Everyone is invited to each event that happens during the week, and I personally invite you to come to the activities and bring someone who may not have family close by. I invite singles to car pool to the events. No one should be alone and we need to lean on each other. Love those around you, pray for those who are not and stay strong to the good principals you know to be true.   Enjoy Family Week...

Mayor Bert Wilson 14

We’d like to thank all the great volunteers for their countless hours of service. Lehi Family Week would not be possible without all the effort and work that they put in. A special thanks to Heather Miller, chair of Lehi Family Week, for her positive attitude and leadership.
