Lehi Family Week is a wonderful thing to celebrate. It gives us a chance to reflect on the blessings of life and the blessings of those around us. No matter where we live or how far from home we travel, we always know that someone is waiting and praying for us. It really doesn’t matter if you have a large family, a small family, or don’t have a blood relative to be found. Someone somewhere does care for you. You can count on that! It may be family, a neighbor, a friend, or someone across town. Each of us should take the time to share that kind of relationship with someone in our community. Both friends and family can bring peace of mind and feelings of love. I would hope that every citizen

6

in our community and in surrounding communities will take the opportunity to attend the Lehi Family Week activities. They provide a chance to strengthen the values we have and the blessing in our lives. Let’s not forget that family is about a relationship, not a blood line. So take a neighbor and enjoy the wholesome activities that will be going on all week. Take a look at the schedule; you’re sure to find plenty to do and enjoy. Memories are made up of the things we do and who we do them with, not the things we forgot to do or wish we had done. Come to all the events and tell them you are a guest of the mayor. Let’s love more, forgive more, do more, appreciate what we have, stop worrying about

what we want, and be grateful that we have a community who cares about each other and our families. Gratefully your Mayor, Bert Wilson

Tiny Homes Ready to Flood Utah County Market! Over 40% of the population in Utah County cannot afford to purchase a home because of ever increasing costs to buy or build a home. Even the lowest priced homes in the county (typically 40-60 years old and in need of repair) are still too expensive. There simply aren’t enough homes in the market for all the people that would like to own a home.

START TINY

Life Starter Homes Has the Answer! Life Starter Homes is a locally owned company that is an up and coming builder of Tiny and Small Homes in Utah County. The trend of Tiny Homes is sweeping the nation and Utah County is ready to explode with this affordable housing phenomenon. Life Starter Homes will work with you to custom build the exact home you are looking for and will also work hard on finding the perfect property to fit within your budget. Life Starter Homes can start you out with a single unit Tiny Home that is 8 ½ feet wide, 13 feet tall, and 18 feet long. Each unit comes with a loft bedroom, a full bathroom, kitchen, and dining area. All homes are made with interchangeable parts, making the homes easily expandable as the need arises.

EASILY EXPANDABLE

These homes are also built so that they can be self-sustaining or “off the grid.” They can be equipped with solar panels on the roof to generate electricity and can have a roof system to collect and purify rainwater. Finally, the price range makes these homes incredibly affordable. A basic Tiny Home starts at $19,000 and goes up from there depending on the size of home and the customized options you desire. The pricing of these homes allows you to own your own home, free and clear, in 5-10 years!

EVENTUALLY EXPAND TO REACH DESIRED HOME SIZE!

This has been quite a year! I wasn’t planning on chairing Lehi Family Week this year. With my husband still battling cancer, my daughter returning home from her full time mission to Taiwan, and slowing down with 4 kids still at home, I felt that I had served well for the past 4 years. Someone else could take up the torch.... but no one did and I couldn’t allow a lapse in our now 15th annual Lehi Family Week Celebration of the FAMILY! Especially with the news of how the courts had re-defined the family! I had the opportunity to attend the World Congress of Families IX in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago. It was an amazing conference with 65 countries represented and some 3,300 people in attendance. I heard many powerful talks, saw charts, graphs, and loads of research showing how a father and mother dedicated to their marriage and children provides a higher standard of living and greater educational opportunities for their children and an increase in the economic stability in that state. Many of the speakers will be on YouTube.com, so if you are interested in hearing what was shared go to

www.wcf9.org/engage. On behalf of our LFW Committee, I extend a warm welcome to the many families who have made it a tradition to attend our annual Lehi Family Week celebration and pray that you will feel strengthened and renewed as you attend our Sunday Kick Off Celebration at the Willowcreek Middle School and the many activities that are offered throughout the week. Maximize your investments with local firm Helping families and small businesses get the most out of their investments and meet their financial goals is the main focus of RedStone Advisors, an independent financial advisory firm in Lehi. For 10 years, this business has been helping clients find and maximize the investments that work best for them and their life plans, whether they be stocks, bonds, mutual funds, 401Ks or brokerage accounts. Its staff of specialists takes the time to sit down with clients and evaluate their specific needs and desires. Then an individual plan is drafted for their clients indicating how best to manage their wealth while considering objectives such as retirement, investment strategy, risk management, liability management, wealth transfer planning and education planning. Along the way, these specialists do everything they can to make the process simple and easy to understand. With the motto “Taking the time to do it right,” RedStone Advisors is serious about its goal to make sure they do the best work they can for their clients. “I would say we are craftsmen in our respective trade,” said RedStone Advisors owner James Moyes. “A lot of people are, ‘Just get it done.’ That’s not the way we operate. The way we operate is we take the time and we make sure that it’s done correctly.” In addition to helping individuals and families, RedStone Advisors works with small to midsize businesses throughout the western United States to help them create company retirement plans such as 401Ks and pension plans. New legislation

and legal requirements have made retirement plans increasingly complex, and RedStone Advisors can help clients successfully navigate these difficult requirements. In 2015, RedStone Advisors was named to the Financial Times’ Top Financial Advisors List in the country for its work with businesses; it also made the National Association of Plan Advisors’ list of the top 50 advisors under the age of 40. RedStone Advisors is a fee-based, non-commission financial advisory firm, meaning they are completely independent and under no pressure to sell their clients any kind of product. Their goal is simply to provide clients with the expertise to meet their financial goals in the most effective way possible. RedStone Advisors is located at 149 N. 1200 East in Lehi. EDWARD & TRACIE GOETTIG Nestled away in a lovely home in a community just North of Thanksgiving Point lives the Goettig Family. Edward and Tracie met at Utah State University shortly after Edward returned from an LDS mission in Germany. They have now been married 22 years and have four amazing daughters: Bailee (18), Sydney (16), Addie (13), and Olivia (11). Over the years the family has developed a love for service and it is through that service that they have strengthened their love for each other. Edward and Tracie set a great example for their daughters when it comes to service. Tracie has served countless hours in church callings as well as serving with the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Edward has served in church callings throughout his life and serves as a Tech Sergeant in the US Air Force Reserve at Hill Air Force Base and has been in the reserves on and off for 17 years. Last March, Edward returned home from a seven month stint in Afghanistan. He was able to surprise the girls by going to their schools and

having a special reunion with each daughter. These reunions were shown on KSL and the Today Show and the video can still be seen on YouTube today. This example of service has helped inspire each girl in the family to find their own ways to serve. The LDS Young Women’s organization has been instrumental in providing guidance and opportunities for the girls to get involved. In fact, last year they were able to collect over 400 pairs of shoes for needy kids. Also, Bailee and her Young Women’s group had a chance to volunteer for a Vivint sponsored humanitarian project in which they made packages for orphans in Cambodia. All four of these amazing young women have had a chance to serve in student council or student leadership. In fact, Bailee has taken on a leadership role with the HOPE Squad at the High School. The HOPE Squad is comprised of students who are trained to watch for at-risk students and people in the community– they provide friendship, identify warning signs, and seek help from adults.

Tracie said that there’s a certain measure of discomfort for being recognized for their service. She explained, “There are numerous families that are much more deserving of this recognition. I know so many other families that give to the community and are raising great kids!” The Goettig Family has lived in Lehi for 11 years and absolutely love the time they have spent here. They chose Lehi because they love the small town feel and wanted to raise their children in an area that they could feel good about. Edward stated, “It seems like Lehi is a gateway… a gateway to northern Utah and Salt Lake and also a gateway to southern Utah. As you come over the point, it’s such a broad place that has now grown into a place of many opportunities: business, shopping, family, culture. I think there is a lot more in store for Lehi and we’re glad to be a part of that.” Tracie added, “It’s been fascinating to watch all the growth in Lehi and with growth, comes a lot of opportunity. A lot of social experiences have come from that growth and we love Lehi… we know it is where we are meant to be. We couldn’t be happier here.” Over the years they have developed a family motto, “You don’t Deserve It, You earn It!” Tracie continued, “Basically, when there is an opportunity for service, whether we provide an opportunity or it is provided by another organization outside of our family, we’ve always encouraged our children to step up and participate. We feel like it gives them such enriching experiences that allow them to develop personally and to develop an appreciation for other people and a gratitude for their own life.” The Goettig Family helps make Lehi a great place to live. They are a great example of a family working together to try and enrich the lives of those around them. If you get a chance, take some time to volunteer in the community and you’ll undoubtedly meet a member of the Goettig family serving right there with you!

When Chris Morgan was 12 years old, his father Bill took him to Normandy, France to teach his son the immense debt he owed to veterans. Standing on Omaha beach on a windy, cold day was an unforgettably moving experience for both father and son. Honoring veterans and elders in general is a hallmark of the Morgan family and it’s no small wonder that both Bill and Chris, now attorneys, have dedicated their practice to helping seniors and veterans. In addition to more than 25 years as a successful attorney, Bill Morgan is also a licensed clinical social worker. Bill worked as a hospice counselor, helping many elderly clients and their family to prepare to pass on. Though this was not easy work, it instilled in Bill a unique perspective on the needs of the elderly. He resolved to retool his focus in the law to help seniors get the most of their older years. Almost from the first day of Law School, Chris Morgan tried to find a way to incorporate the deep rooted respect for his elders into his career as an attorney. He found his passion early on in estate planning and has never looked back. Bill focuses his attention to preventing the abuse of the elderly and adults with special needs. He draws on his experience as an injury lawyer as well as experience as a mental health expert to pursue abusers. Chris on the other hand specializes in long term estate planning. With various tools such as trusts, wills, powers of attorney and business succession plans, Chris works to stop the abuse before it ever happens. As a father-son team Morgan & Morgan are proud to offer a range of services to seniors and adults with special needs including estate planning, benefit planning, guardianships and help with abuse and other injury claims. DAVE AND RHONDA NERDIN Dave and Rhonda Nerdin know how to turn an event into a tradition. After 35 years of marriage, they have been instrumental in creating some lasting traditions in their family and in the community. The Nerdin’s have 4 children: Skyler (34) and his wife, Kinslee, along with their three girls, Averee, Kennadee and Hadlee; Trevor (29) and his wife Candice, and their two children, Boston and Emmie; Ashlee (25), Braxton (21) and one grandchild on the way. The kids have all been involved in sports, city youth council, and plenty of other extra-curricular activities and have been a big part in helping Dave and Rhonda establish a tradition of service throughout the community. One of the Lehi traditions that Rhonda has helped establish is held at the Lehi Legacy Center. She was one of two people that started the youth volleyball league. The league started with three teams and has grown to 70 teams this past year. She has enjoyed meeting a lot of neat people- including coaches, parents and youth. She has had a lot of fun helping to build the program

12

over the years. Of course, volleyball is a team sport, and the program would never have grown to where it is today without the support of the staff and volunteers also involved. The longest standing tradition they have as a family has been their involvement with Lehi Round-up Rodeo. Dave has served on the concessions and other rodeo committees for 34 years and has attended over 100 straight sessions of the Lehi Rodeo. Dave and Rhonda have been co-chairs of the concessions committee since 2009. With the help of countless volunteers over the years, concession sales have become consistent fundraiser of the Round-up. One of the big reasons they are so involved with the concessions committee at this time is the fact that the money earned from concession sales goes to help fund the miniature floats at the annual Lehi parade. The rodeo doesn’t use the concession money at all… it is used specifically to improve the concession stands and to help wards and groups enter floats into the miniature float parade.

Your business is always welcome, important and appreciated.

Dave helped establish another tradition as he served on the Lehi Community Council when Lehi Family Week started. “We felt like Lehi was a family-oriented community and we wanted to keep it family-oriented. The Round-up is a family-oriented event. The Rodeo Committee (Civic Improvement Association) has resisted allowing outside sponsorship of the Lehi Roundup Rodeo. They value families, family values and Lehi traditions I think Family Week is a natural off shoot of that- celebrate what families are. This is a community that values families and values having families together and doing things together.” Rhonda has lived in Lehi all of her life and stated that, “Even though we are growing like crazy there is still a small town feeling here… which I love.” She finds it important to stay involved with Lehi traditions and that it is a great way to meet new people… just another fun thing about Lehi. As Lehi continues to grow, there will be struggles with balancing tradition and change. Dave stated, “I’ve always felt that everyone should volunteer with something. At least one person in the family should go be on a committee or do something that is outside of their normal religious affiliation and responsibilities. I think that is what is great here; because there are a lot of people that will want to do just that.” “I think it’s a lot by example,” Rhonda added. “You were talking about the floats and I think that (new people) don’t understand the floats and how important they are to Lehi. We are the only ones around that have miniature floats. But you’ll ask them to do it and they’ll say ‘I can’t build a float’, but they’ll go down to the parade and see how important it really is. How people get together and make those floats and just come together and its really kind of neat. So I think it’s just by example is a lot of what we need to do and keep doing it.” The Nerdins have spent a lifetime helping to bring, build, and maintain some amazing traditions in Lehi. They would invite anyone in Lehi to bring their family and join in the tradition- by working together as a team and community Lehi will only become a better place to live.

TIM & ROXANNE THAYNE Roxanne and Tim Thayne first met on the Ballroom dance team at BYU, where he carefully positioned himself to ask her to dance the first day, knowing they’d be partners for the whole semester. They have been partners ever since, now married for 25 years. They have five children, Mitchell (22)- serving an LDS mission in South Africa, Talmage (20)- currently serving an LDS mission in Scotland/Ireland, Grayson (17), Afton (14), and Halsten (11). Roxanne finished with a degree in History and Geography, Secondary Education from BYU. Tim graduated with a Master’s Degree in Family Science at BYU and went on to get his Ph.D. at Virginia Tech. Moving every few years was common for them, until they decided to move back to Utah so their kids could be raised near grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. “It’s a rare blessing these days to grow up with cousins as your best friends.” says Roxanne. Tim is as much entrepreneur as family therapist. After co-founding, then selling a wilderness therapy pro-

gram based out of Lehi, 10 years ago, Tim and Roxanne started a transition company called Homeward Bound - created to help fill a major gap in the adolescent treatment field. At-risk youth were going home without a lot of support and parents didn’t know how to keep the progress that had been made. Today, Homeward Bound works with families all over the nation to help these youth integrate back into their families and community by using their extended network of support as well as proven parenting principles and coaching. Tim’s work in this field also led to the creation of a tech company called Family Bridge. Roxanne and Tim also worked together to write and publish his book, Not by Chance: How Parents Boost Their Teens Success In and After Treatment. A good work ethic was top priority for Tim and Roxanne to instill in their children. At one point, they started Paisley Farms, a pure-bred Berkshire hog farm in Roosevelt. Within 4 years they helped build it to where it was rated the largest Step 4 hog farm in the Mountain West, selling the majority of their meat to Whole Foods Markets and local farmer’s markets.

After 4 years, they sold the farm. Though it was hard to let it go, Tim said, “It really provided some incredible memories. We took an old dairy farm that was a complete junk yard and transformed it through some intense effort. Our kids had a lot to do with it…it was quite the learning experience, and formed a lot of their identity.” Today they maintain a mini farm in their own back yard, in the middle of the city. The family’s milk cow, Creamy, needs milking at 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. every day. Then they have to make sure the heifer calf Caramel is also fed. There are cats, dog, horses, and lots of yard work to keep them busy. Tim shared, “The kids would probably say their parents know how to work, but we probably don’t know how to play like we should. Still, they are proud to bring their friends over to show off the cow and share a glass of raw milk.” Lehi is truly a safe haven for the Thayne family. As Tim travels all over the country meeting with families who are struggling and feel isolated, each time he returns home he tells Roxanne- “We are so blessed.” Tim and his team of adventurous therapists try to establish a ‘Home Team’- a network of family, friends, and neighbors that all take part in helping the troubled youth get or stay on track. When families use their natural support systems and implement sound parenting principles, treatment results are maintained. Tim stated, “You come to Lehi and are surrounded by thousands of people that share our values; that would help us raise our kids, that intervene where they can… encouraging where they can. It’s been an incredible blessing to be here.” Roxanne added, “Lehi is such a great location; the access to education, cultural and sporting events, restaurants and shopping, library and athletic facilities, jobs…so much has been done to welcome the exciting growth we are experiencing.” It’s clear that the Thayne family puts family first and anyone that meets them would find satisfaction in the love they have for each other and their hometown. Roxanne concluded by saying, “It’s a dream come true. We often talk as a family about how we feel like we are living our dream life. We really do have the best of all worlds here.”

CULVERS - FAMILY FRIENDLY BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Spencer Young, owner of the Lehi Culver’s, spent a lot of time researching different restaurants and chains. What drew him to culvers was the actual family atmosphere. He explained, “That’s what we focus on, is the people. My philosophy is that if we take care of our employees then they will take care of our guests. That’s the whole philosophy that’s been created at Culver’s. We don’t have customers- we have guests. We don’t have employees- we have team members. Even the way we word things and the way we do things is a family atmosphere.” Spencer was actually preparing for the completion of the Orem Culver’s when tragedy struck the

Spencer related, “Dave Ward was a very good friend of mine… I’ve known him and his family for over 10 years. In fact, he worked with my dad before he opened this Culver’s store. He came and opened up the Lehi Culver’s and he ran Lehi for about 3 years.” Orem was under construction and Spencer was training his management team (10 managers in training) here in Lehi. When Dave’s tragedy passed it was a hard time for everyone… the whole team. “It was a challenge to take on a second location when we hadn’t even opened up our first one,” Spencer continued. “We took on the challenge. We’ve tried to carry on what Dave started here. Dave had a great business going here and he had that good family atmosphere and had built this into a good, thriving business. We just tried to build off of what he’s done and take over, not only as an effort to help his family but to also build the Culver’s brand.” One of the keys to building the Culver’s brand is to be involved in the community. They work hand in

hand with several local schools to help raise funds for various school groups. They donate a portion of sales to groups or schools that express a need. Spencer said, “I like to take care of the community that is taking care of us as a business. We are all about reaching out to the community. Whatever we can do to help the community- we want to be involved.” They try to maintain an active role in community events like Lehi Round-up, Foam Day, Easter and Halloween on Main, and Family Week. They also have a program to help with blood donations- give a pint of blood and then come in to get a pint of frozen custard. In addition, Culver’s strives to be involved with FFA groups… one of the marketing missions of the company is to thank farmers. They try to give back to local farmers and support them in their profession. Spencer exemplifies the rich tradition of family values held by Culver’s as well as Lehi. His dad has 30 years of experience in the fast food industry and the advice he gets from his dad goes a long way. Spencer shared, “I look up to my dad in so many ways- I’ve got a great relationship with my dad and love him more than ever. Right now I look up to him not just as a father but as a mentor figure. He’s someone who has gone down this path before… he can give me advice on things. He helps steer me that way in a professional way now.” Spencer has his hands full right now, as he balances the operations of both the Lehi and Orem Culver’s along with supporting his own family. Spencer, his wife, Rachel, and daughter, Halle, are excited for the next family addition on the way. Working for a company like Cul-

ver’s helps him to stay grounded in strong, family principles. Spencer concluded, “I’ve fallen in love with Culvers. I love everything about the food, the atmosphere, the people we are able to hire.” If you get a chance, head on

down to Culver’s and find out for yourself why they are such a great company. Enjoy the food, enjoy the service from their 60+ team members, and most of all enjoy the family friendly atmosphere they have created.

ONE MAN SHOW OF MUSIC, COMEDY TO PERFORM Over 2,000 events and performances in his 15 year career, for Fortune 500 companies, and clients such as American Express, Delta Airlines, 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, Coca~Cola, Wells Fargo, Experian, NuSkin, Younique and many more, have solidified Jason Hewlett as the go-to solution for your corporate event needs. Jason’s One-Man Show of Music, Comedy, Parody & Impressions has received Best of State honors in the Arts & Entertainment category numerous times in his home state of Utah, and is received by standing ovations worldwide. Uniquely enough, this same show is performed on stages for families, corporations, and appeared in every major Casino in Las Vegas, while remaining a G-Rated, family-friendly, corporate ready experience. Few performers can match the level of laughs, energy, and appropriate material for any audience as Jason Hewlett, and the show continues to evolve and grow each year, resulting in repeat performances for more than half of his clients, which is

unprecedented in the corporate market. Combining his ability as a seasoned Entertainer and behind-the-scenes expertise with event planning, Jason has become one of America’s top Master of Ceremonies/Hosts for the largest corporate and charity events. Whether a 3-day Convention or an Awards Gala, Jason keeps the energy, laughs, and excitement throughout, while allowing executives to take a back seat and enjoy the conference rather than stress about running it. Some amazing events in the last year for Jason include: • Released his full show DVD as filmed in Las Vegas, along with his book, “Signature Moves: How To Stand Out In A Sit Down World” to rave reviews. • Received the CSP Award, Certified Speaking Professional, from the National Speakers Association, of which only 5% of speakers receive. His speeches are interactive, hilarious, filled with stories that teach and inspire, along with music and impressions that uplift

Kevin explained, “It is incredibly important for us to be part of the community in every way that we can. It’s who we are. We have truly enjoyed becoming part of the community, and we look forward to finding more and more ways to do this in the future. To grow and prosper as a business in a community like Lehi, it’s not enough to have a great product and great service. You must become involved at a very grass roots level: In the schools, with youth sports, non-profit organizations, etc. And again, it’s a great fit because this is a huge part of our business philosophy.” Which Wich stores stand by their product and live by the following motto: Sandwichfaction Guaranteed! If you don’t like what you have created, you can make another one. If you haven’t tried Which Wich, make sure to

bring your family in and experience the Which Wich sensation. With a friendly staff and lots of positive energy and superior guest service, you will want to return again and again.

I have long been skeptical at going to a chiropractor. I was in a severe car roll over...and was experiencing a lot of pain. I was referred to Dr. Baird’s office by a good friend. So I called for an appointment, and...I went ahead with the treatment...I’m feeling much, much better, no pain, better range of motion in my neck than what I had even before the accident. I would highly recommend Dr. Baird. ~Rick C. ~ Alpine, UT

Dear Lehi Families, This past summer many members within the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce and Lehi City teamed up to issue a challenge to area youth: unplug from television, video games and cell phones and instead fly a kite, learn to fish or enjoy a picnic. The Chamber and Lehi City sponsored Play Unplugged. The program began Memorial Day and ended on Labor Day, followed by a back to school party shortly after. Mountain Point Medical and Costco sponsored the party Through the Play Unplugged program, local businesses and organizations sponsored activities such as go on a hike, visit a museum, or read a book. After kids completed the Play Unplugged activity, they then visited the business sponsoring that activity and received a Play Unplugged “Brag Badge”. As kids collected the badges, they attached them to a special Play Unplugged Lanyard sponsored by Intermountain Health Care. Over 50 different Badges were offered and the kids responded by the thousands. All summer long kids with parents in hand completed activity after activity, having a great time all while leaving their electronics behind and in the “off” position. Needless to say we are looking forward to Play Unplugged 2016. As a Chamber we are also heavily involved with Lehi Foam Day or Resident Appreciation Day, depending on water conservation efforts. No doubt, this is one of my

favorite city events each year. When the foam is flying and everyone is playing it truly is a sight to see. Accented by great food and music it is difficult to find a better place to spend the day as a family. We are continuously looking for ways to help bring our community together. Business oriented events such as Play Unplugged, Easter on Main, and Halloween on Main are a great way to encourage people to shop local by visiting local businesses and finding out what they have to offer. Local businesses provide jobs to local residents thereby strengthening our economy. City events like Foam Day are the perfect way to give back to the residents of Lehi. They bring Lehi families together to enjoy safe, friendly, wholesome activities. Lehi has become nationally recognized as an amazing place to live. Not just because it’s a great place to start a business or work for a large tech company, but because Lehi still offers a wonderful quality of life outside of work. As 2016 quickly approaches I look forward to next year. As a chamber we will continue to look for ways to make Lehi even better for businesses and residents alike. Best regards, Mark R Welcker President and CEO Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce
