Lehi Family Week is a wonderful thing to celebrate. It gives us a chance to reflect on the blessings of life and the blessings of those around us. No matter where we live or how far from home we travel, we always know that someone is waiting and praying for us. It really doesn’t matter if you have a large family, a small family, or don’t have a blood relative to be found. Someone somewhere does care for you. You can count on that! It may be family, a neighbor, a friend, or someone across town. Each of us should take the time to share that kind of relationship with someone in our community. Both friends and family can bring peace of mind and feelings of love. I would hope that every citizen
in our community and in surrounding communities will take the opportunity to attend the Lehi Family Week activities. They provide a chance to strengthen the values we have and the blessing in our lives. Let’s not forget that family is about a relationship, not a blood line. So take a neighbor and enjoy the wholesome activities that will be going on all week. Take a look at the schedule; you’re sure to find plenty to do and enjoy. Memories are made up of the things we do and who we do them with, not the things we forgot to do or wish we had done. Come to all the events and tell them you are a guest of the mayor. Let’s love more, forgive more, do more, appreciate what we have, stop worrying about

If you want to have an extra memorable Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday, and if you feel your family could be more unified, there is nothing quite like service. Doing service unites families. I’ve experienced it in my own life and it helps not only those you serve, but it somehow makes everyone who is serving feel better. Those feelings touch every family member and before you know it you’ll hear feedback like, “That was fun!” “Let’s do that again!” etc. We are starting a new family tradition – we are going to serve – brighten, lift, strengthen, bless those who might need an extra hand of love & support. On Thursday, December 1, 2016 our family would like to invite your family to join in a day of service. We are going to post on our Lehi Family Week Facebook page a variety of service opportunities and we hope you will choose one or more and take a picture and write what your family did to be a light. Please use the #LighttheWorld and let’s see how Lehi can brighten, lift, strengthen, bless and unite our families. I also wanted to thank Cindy Sloan, Stacy Bateman, Josh Walker and Melanie Hansen for serving with me on the LFW committee. It has been great
preparing for Lehi Family Week this year and they have sacrificed so much to bring you this family focused celebration. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of Lehi City and all the many businesses who have donated to our Family Week celebration. Please join us throughout the week - bowling, breakfast with Santa, parade and family square dance to name a few. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and know that you and your family are an essential part of Lehi and I appreciate all you have done and continue to do to bless our wonderful city! Community service central in the Albrecht home Whether it’s sports or the arts, the city rodeo or the city’s history - for the Albrechts, it’s really all about community service. “It’s enjoyable to serve. Service is fun,” said Jeremy Albrecht. “I guess we’re just willing and we want to be involved, and we want our boys to learn to serve and be responsible citizens and to find the joy in service. We just want a better Lehi than when we arrived, and serving and being involved is how you do that.” Jeremy and Paige Albrecht were married in 1994 and moved to Lehi after attending Brigham Young University. The city’s central location between Provo and Salt Lake City was appealing to them, particularly since their son Alex has cerebral palsy and other neurological problems and they wanted to be closer to Primary Children’s Hospital. The couple has two other sons as well: Aaron, a senior at Lehi High School, and James, a seventh-grader at Willowcreek Middle School. Jeremy Albrecht is one of two coaches for the Lehi
High School Boys Tennis Team, a team that includes his son Aaron. Jeremy also ran the city’s tennis program last summer and referees basketball games at the Lehi Legacy Center. He’s also helped with the Junior Jazz program and with baseball and soccer programs; in fact, added all up, Jeremy estimates he’s coached more than 50 teams during his time in Lehi. “Coaching is a way to reach kids and hopefully they can be better people than I am or was,” Jeremy said. “When you’re coaching, you can teach decisionmaking and consequences and things, but you do it through sports. But the reality is, it relates to life.” One of the main messages he shares with his players is that it doesn’t matter where they start; all that matters is where they end. Paige Albrecht currently serves on the Lehi City Council, having taken office for her first term last January. Before that, she served on the city’s planning commission for several years and spent time on
I have long been skeptical at going to a chiropractor. I was in a severe car roll over...and was experiencing a lot of pain. I was referred to Dr. Baird’s office by a good friend. So I called for an appointment, and...I went ahead with the treatment...I’m feeling much, much better, no pain, better range of motion in my neck than what I had even before the accident. I would highly recommend Dr. Baird. ~Rick C. ~ Alpine, UT

the board of adjustment before that. Her love of community service dates back to when the city canceled the men’s softball league, a program her husband participated in, and she felt the city was taking away opportunities from the residents. “She didn’t like what they did with the men’s league and that drove her to get involved,” Jeremy said. “Then she just kind of realized that she kind of enjoyed it and it just took off from there.” Paige doesn’t make any decision without doing research on how it will benefit the city. “That’s her
belief, it needs to benefit the city as a whole,” Jeremy said, adding that she responds to every email, voice mail and text message she receives. Paige also spent several years working with autistic children as a paraeducator for Alpine School District. Jeremy and Paige both serve on the Lehi City Arts Council and Paige has directed many plays for the city, including this year’s Halloween production. Their entire family has appeared on stage. “That’s one of our favorite things to do as a family is be in the shows,” Jeremy said. The Albrechts also serve on the Lehi Round-Up committee and the Lehi Heritage Day committee and are involved with the Lehi City Archive. “We know we’re not a perfect family, we have our challenges and some are more serious than others. The point is, we work together to overcome those,” Jeremy said. “We’re not perfect, we’re like every other family. We’re just trying to get through every day like every other family…. We’re trying to do better every day, and if we do that, in the long run I think we’ll be OK.”

Freemans a real-life “Blind Side” story Garett was sitting on a curb at the side of the road surrounded by his belongings on that day eight years ago when Greg Freeman drove past and spotted him. “He called me up and said, ‘What do you want me to do with Garett? It looks like he has nowhere to go,” recalled Greg’s wife Emily Freeman. “And so I prayed because that was a tough decision…. I knew Garett’s history, and so I just prayed, ‘What should we do?’ And the answer was super clear; it just said, ‘Bring him home.’” The Freemans’ relationship with Garett, who is now considered one of their children, has unfolded over the years much like the popular movie “The Blind Side.” Greg and Emily were raising their family of four children - Caleb, Josh, Meg and Grace - in Lehi when, 12 years ago, the bishop of their LDS ward called them and other families in to discuss how they could help Garett, who lived in the neighborhood. A ninth-grader at the time, Garett struggled with a difficult situation at home. He was close to being kicked

out of the school and having trouble with the law. Because Garett was getting into the most trouble during the evening hours, the group decided to invite him into their homes at that time. The Freemans hosted him several nights a week with Emily preparing dinner and the rest of the family tutoring him in his school subjects. Garett ended up graduating from high school, but after a short stint in jail and more turmoil at home, he was kicked out. It was that day that Greg saw him on the curb. “We loved Garett, and you could see the goodness that was in his heart, and you realized when you looked at him he had been given an unfair situation to try to succeed in,” Emily said. The Freemans set house rules, and Garett stayed for 18 months. He turned his life around, began attending church and decided to serve an LDS mission. When he returned, someone approached him with the idea of playing football, something he had done in high school. Garett loved the movie “The

Blind Side” and he decided to give it a try. Snow College showed interest and he attended their fall camp, ultimately winning a scholarship. After two years at Snow, Garett became the most highly recruited junior college player in the nation, receiving nearly 30 offers from all over the country, Emily said. “In the end, being near family became what was super important for both him and his wife, and so he signed at the University of Utah,” she said. This fall has been his first season at the U, and scouts are eyeing him for a possible future in the NFL. “It’s been really awesome for our family. It was the hardest thing we’ve ever done for sure, but I saw that my kids learned empathy, and they learned what it meant to sacrifice for someone, and really we learned what it means to love people well,” Emily said. Meanwhile, other boys who knew the Freeman children and what the family had done for Garett asked for help as well. Over the years, these boys have come and stayed until they were through whatever challenges they faced, then returned to their families. “Just life struggles bring them here or difficulties at home or they just need a place where they can go to feel encouragement and feel safe. They just know they’re welcome here,” she said. “Sometimes it’s for one night, sometimes it’s for three months, and so whatever they need, that’s what we do.” In addition to helping local youth, the Freemans are involved in the community in other ways. Greg has coached lacrosse at Lehi High School for nearly 10 years and all of their children have played on his teams. Emily is a writer of Christian inspirational books with 16 of her works published by Deseret Book including “The Christ-Centered Christmas” and “21 Days Closer to Christ.” She also speaks at Time Out for Women events around the country.

Son leads couple to help others with disabilities When Scott and Michelle Holbrook’s son Curtis was 6 years old, his mother went to his school one day and found him sitting in the 2-year-old class. Curtis suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic condition that causes many challenges including intellectual impairment. When Michelle asked why her son was in the wrong age group, she was told the 2-year-old class had the kind of activities Curtis could do. Holbrook disagreed, wanting her son to be with children his own age. “From there on out, I decided that if I wanted to have things done, I would have to do them myself,” she said. Helping their son find the activities and education they wanted for him - as well as Michelle’s 24 years working as a teacher for Alpine School District (17 in special education, seven in education) - led Michelle and other concerned parents to create a nonprofit organization called Just For Kids of Utah County. Through JFK, they are helping children and adults
with disabilities participate in sports, access vocational and other educational opportunities and enjoy other fun activities. In Utah, students with disabilities have free public education until age 22, after which there’s not much available, said Michelle, who currently works as a special education teacher at Lehi High School. “I’ve taught at the high school level for years and I have watched my very, very capable students sit home with nothing to do,” she said. For the past 11 years, JFK has offered a summer school for students with disabilities in junior high and high school. This educational activity program offers academic classes and fun activities. About seven years ago, JFK Athletics began operating, which offers adaptive sports. Those participating are playing on basketball and volleyball teams as well as bowling and swimming. Lehi City allows the program to use its registration system and facilities. JFK Athletics is for all ages and hosts two large tournaments per

year for volleyball and bowling. The basketball teams and swimmers can go on to participate in the Special Olympics. The HIVES program also operates under JFK. HIVES, which stands for Habilitation, Independence, Vocation, Education and Socialization, is an educational activity program for adults with disabilities. Through HIVES, participants are picked up in the morning for a day full of activities. Different activities are scheduled for each day of the week, but the day always includes physical fitness and academic
opportunities. Currently, the program has 35 participants and about 14 part-time instructors who oversee the activities and drive the vans. Participants choose how often to attend; cost is just $20 per day. Scott Holbrook owns and manages Holbrook Farms and provides tremendous support for Michelle’s work from behind the scenes, she said. They are members of the LDS Church, something Michelle said gives them an eternal view on family. “I think that deep, religious, eternal perspective makes us look beyond how we look at Curtis and others with disabilities,” she said. “We value them and we value their time…. We want to give them as productive a life as we would expect for our other children.” The Holbrooks have two other married children, Natalie and Cameron, and eight grandchildren. The Holbrooks own land they would like to use as the home for a special project they have in mind called The Curtis Center. This facility would provide a home for the programs now offered through JFK. Funds are currently being raised for the project; for more information or to donate, visit www.thecurtiscenter.org.

conducted genealogical research, almost half have found living relatives they didn’t know about, with a significant number actually meeting face to face. Ancestry’s work comes as interest in family history has ballooned worldwide. The company’s 2014 Global Family History Report indicates 63 percent of people feel it has become more important than ever now to know their family history, believing the past is important to understanding who they are today. Almost 71 percent of respondents across six countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States) have personally become more interested in family history in recent years, and 60 percent feel a personal responsibility to act as a guardian of their family history. While the company helps people worldwide with their family history work, it also believes in being highly involved as a corporate citizen of its own community. “Ancestry has been a Utah-based company for more than 30 years, and we were thrilled to open our new headquarters in Lehi this summer,” said Zach Pino, senior vice president of people and places at Ancestry. “We’ve always been actively involved in helping families in need in this area by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, hosting food drives and buying holiday gifts for children and seniors, to name a few. We’re also working hard to promote a diverse and inclusive working environment, and we’re
proud to contribute to what makes Lehi a great place to live and work – both now and in the future.” The company believes in giving back to the community, and the local organizations it supports include: The American Red Cross: Ancestry supports the Restoring Family Links program, which helps reconnect families across the globe who have been separated by challenges like war and natural disasters. The Salvation Army: Ancestry employees collect and deliver holiday gifts for needy children and seniors through its sponsorship of the Angel Tree program. Primary Children’s Hospital: Employee volunteers and company donations support the hospital’s annual Radiothon. Ancestry also participates in the Epic Ski Challenge to raise money on behalf of Primary Children’s. Habitat for Humanity: Employee volunteers help build and repair houses so people can have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. Local food banks: Every year, Ancestry employees donate to a canned food drive to support local food banks and feed families. The drive is usually held during winter months, just in time for the holidays. Ancestry also encourages its employees to participate in community technology groups and meet-ups and find ways to socialize with others either on a professional level or a personal one. For example, this fall Ancestry announced the organization of a new Tech and Product User Group on Utah’s Silicon Slopes. The goal of the group is to encourage collaboration between companies along the Wasatch Front in solving difficult and interesting technology and science
problems. In 2016, Ancestry served as the

Motivational speaker Hank Smith Motivational speaker Hank Smith will speak on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in Skyridge High School Auditorium. The public is invited to attend. Hank Smith grew up in St. George, Utah. He served a mission to California, has an MBA from Utah State University, and a PhD from Brigham Young University where he now is a faculty member in the Religion Department. Brother Smith, his wife Sara, and their 5 children, live in Mapleton, Utah. In an article written in the Daily Universe last November, Emily Stiles had this to say about Hank Smith: “Smith speaks to students like they are his old friends, making it not too hard to believe this BYU professor has over 10,000 followers on Instagram and a Facebook fan page with more than 28,000 likes. Smith is a prominent figure in the LDS community, speaking at events almost every weekend nationwide. Smith visited more than 15 states for speaking engagements in 2015 alone. In addition to his speeches, Smith wrote three books and recorded 14 best-selling talks on CDs. Many students are familiar with Smith before they take his Book of Mormon or New Testament classes at BYU. Smith didn’t always want to teach religion at BYU, but he describes himself as someone who has always been goal-oriented. As the youngest of five children, Smith said he was a “fire starter” in his

youth. He sometimes “bowled peopled over.” Smith said his mission to Fresno, California was influential in helping him change from being a fire starter to a “peacemaker.” Smith became an EFY counselor following his mission, which led him to teaching seminary. Years later, Smith is now a beloved religion professor and an incredibly busy public speaker. While Smith is well-known for speaking at EFY, Time Out for Women and BYU Education Week in the LDS community, he is now branching out into non-LDS speaking events as well. These events include speeches at schools and interfaith events. Smith’s wife, Sara Smith, said one of the things she admires about her husband is his ability to work. “He is such a hard worker,” she said in an email. “There are incredibly long days where he’s up way before sunrise and returns home long after sunset, and he still walks through the door with a cheerful, loving and kind disposition, never losing his sense of humor.” Despite Smith’s busy schedule, he has a policy of opening his office to anyone. “I believe that people are more important than things,” Smith said. “This job
exists to help BYU students. If I’m not available to them, that kind of goes against the point … I genuinely like (BYU students). I think that’s probably my greatest strength as a teacher.” Smith said he hopes every person who learns from him, whether it be in his CDs or in his class, will come a little bit closer to Christ. “I try to finish every CD with an invitation to go to the Savior,” Smith said. “I try to bring them back to the why, why we do the things that we do … I hope my students walk out of the class saying, ‘(The Savior) is the answer to my problems. He has the answers.’ My hope is that one of my students will say to themselves, ‘If I bind myself to Him I’m going to be OK.’ He changed me. He gave me everything that I am. I believe He can do that for everyone.’” (The majority of the information from this article was used from the Daily Universe article written by Emily Stiles in November 2015. Dear Lehi Families, As a Chamber we are heavily involved with events that bring families together. Lehi Family Week has been a great tradition for our community and we fully support the events that occur during Family Week. We appreciate all the efforts made by volunteers to make this a great experience for our residents. Many of our chamber members have deep ties to the community and have been around for generations. As part of Lehi Family Week, we encourage you to shop locally this holiday season and show your support for these family friendly businesses. We are continuously looking for ways to help bring our community together. Business oriented events such as Lehi Foam Day, Easter on Main, and Halloween on Main are a great way to encourage people to shop local by visiting local businesses and finding out what they have to offer. Local businesses provide jobs to local residents thereby strengthening our economy. City events like Foam Day and Lehi Family Week are the perfect way to give back to the residents of Lehi. They bring Lehi families together to enjoy safe, friendly, wholesome activities. Lehi has become nationally recognized as an amazing place to live. Not just because it’s a great place to start a business or work for a large tech company, but because Lehi still offers a wonderful quality of life outside of work. As 2017 quickly approaches I look forward to next year. As a chamber we will continue to look for ways to make Lehi even better for businesses and residents alike. Best regards, Mark R Welcker President and CEO

The flu is not a season I have had two experiences this past week that have caused me to think about the public’s perception of health, what it is and how we maintain it. The first was this Facebook post that said, “The Flu is Not a Season.” The second happened a few days later when the 4-year-old son of one of my patients said, “I have a cold.” To which the mother promptly replied, “I don’t know where he is getting that, because he has been off of antibiotics for 2 weeks and is doing fine, but he keeps saying that he has a cold.” The idea of a “Flu Season” or that you can even “Catch a Cold,” is very convenient for selling relief for said flu or cold. However, we have to remember that we don’t get the flu because of a lack of antibiotics in our system. We don’t catch a cold because we were in the cold, we don’t even get sick because our child went to pre-school where someone else’s child was sick. Why is it that when a sick child goes into his or her class, only some of the other children will end up sick? Why can one family member get sick and the rest not…or, on the other hand why does the “bug” go through everyone in the family? If we step back and think about this, we realize that the “bug” is the same for everyone. So, if we get sick because of a “bug” or germ, then why are we not sick all the time?
The true hero of our health is the Immune System. It is not the antibiotic, it is not the Flu shot…It is the Immune System. So if we desire to skip the “Flu Season” all together, and if we don’t want to “catch a cold,” then we need to shift our focus from the “bug” or “germ” to the building of the Immune System. It is when our bodies become drained and our immune system weakened that we get sick. The following are a few ways that we can build the Immune System: Incorporate more Vitamin C into your diet organically. This means choosing foods like oranges, red peppers and broccoli instead of popping synthetic vitamins. Skip the sugar. During this time of year we tend to lose sight of eating well and indulge in things we usually wouldn’t which can compromise our bodies. Get a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic care can help keep your nervous system in balance. When your nervous system is working properly, so are other critical bodily systems important to your health. It has been show that chiropractic adjustments can significantly boost your immune function. And patients who receive regular chiropractic adjustments have less missed days of school and work due to illness. Remember, the Flu is Not a Season! However, our Immune System can keep us healthy all year, as we take the appropriate steps to build and maintain it.

A Proclamation for the Family Whereas, families are the cornerstone of our nation and community; and Whereas, Lehi has a tradition of providing a wholesome community where families want to live and raise their children; and Whereas, strong marriages and strong parents are major keys to strong families; and Whereas, the strength of our community, in the future, depends on the success of our children and youth; and Whereas, Lehi has a tradition of promoting a drug free and a crime free community; and Whereas, it is important to respect the differences of families whether they be religious, political, cultural, or other. Now, therefore, I Bert Wilson, Mayor of Lehi City together with the Municipal Council of Lehi, do hereby proclaim and support 2016 as “Lehi Year of the Family” and proclaim the week of November 20-26, 2016 as “Lehi Family Week”. And encourage educators, community organizations, business leaders, and religious leaders to support families, youth and children with the appropriate activities and programs that will create the most family friendly, youth friendly, and child friendly community in the world.
