Mayor’s message Lindon residents will have an opportunity to celebrate their city, see old friends and make new ones during the 2014 Lindon Days celebration planned Aug. 4-9. This year’s theme is “Country Fun in the Sun.” “It’s a time once a year when the citizens can come together and celebrate their life and their community and all of the good things that happen in Lindon and do it in a very festive way with each other,” said Lindon Mayor Jeff Acerson. The mayor encourages all residents to check out the list of events happening during Lindon Days this year and take time to attend those that appeal most to them and their families. Some of the more popular events include the annual Huck Finn fishing event, which gives children a chance to dress up in Huck Finn-era costumes and try to catch fish at Creekside Park. Acerson said the activities held during the Family Arena Events such as the sheep ride are also popular. The mayor himself will preside over the Mayor’s Candy Scramble, which will be part of the Family Arena Events. Acerson said he is looking forward to the Mayor’s Breakfast, planned this year at 7:30 a.m. on

Saturday, Aug. 9., at the Lindon Community Center. “I get a great deal of joy and satisfaction with participating with the other city council members as we cook breakfast for the community,” he said. Providing these types of activities each year reinforces the feeling of community spirit in Lindon, Acerson said. People see their friends and have opportunities to make new Mayor Jeff Acerson ones as well. “One of the interesting things about a city or a community is that more likely than not, those that you socialize with are your immediate neighbors, and I think a community-wide event like this helps broaden that neighborhood. It allows us to reach a little bit further beyond our neighbors right next to us and allows us to get to know other great people in the community.”

Little miss lindon The theme for this year’s Little Miss Lindon Royalty is “Dream Big, Shine Bright.” The girls and their families built a giant jewelry box float with enormous jewels to be showcased in eight local parades. These girls know that if they work together and serve others, they can accomplish their dreams and be shining examples to those around them. They encourage all the youth of Lindon to “Dream Big, Shine Bright”!

ANNA PASSMORE – QUEEN

Anna Passmore, daughter of David and Lisa Passmore, is Little Miss Lindon 2014-15. Anna is 11 years old and attends Timpanogos Academy. She is the youngest of five children. Her hobbies include singing, piano, reading and cooking with friends. She has won awards for her poetry recitation and Irish dance. For her talent in the Little Miss Lindon competition, Anna played the piano and sang “The Rainbow Connection.” During her service project she sewed stockings for hygiene kits to go to at-risk kids at the Division of Child and Family Services. Anna loves the magic of Christmas and wanted to share that joy with the children. She is delighted to serve with the new friends she has made in the royalty and is grateful for the many opportunities this year will bring.

CALLIE ROBERTS - ATTENDANT

Callie Roberts is the daughter of Brett and Ashlee Roberts. She is 12 years old and has three brothers who are her very best friends. She has played the violin since she was 5 years old and is excited to play with the Chamber Orchestra at Oak Canyon Junior High School in the fall. She also loves musical theater. She has performed in several local plays and would gladly give up all of her spare time to be in more. Callie is a peacemaker at home and at school. She makes friends easily and gets along with everyone. She is enjoying every moment of serving on the Little Miss Lindon Royalty.

MADI HARRIS - ATTENDANT

Madi Harris is the daughter of Lisa Harris and Brent and Elizabeth Harris and is the youngest of four children and has four step-brothers. She is 11 and is going to be a sixth-grader at Rocky Mountain Elementary School. Madi loves anything that has to do with music. She loves to sing and plays the violin. She also loves to dance and hang out with many friends at a time while being creative

and doing silly things. Madi is very coordinated and driven and can do anything she tries and puts her mind to. She loves people and loves to be surrounded by friends and family. She has loved every minute of being in the Little Miss Lindon royalty.

RACHEL SAVAGE – ATTENDANT

Rachel Savage is the daughter of Dray and Shelly Savage. She is 12 years old and will attend Oak Canyon Junior High School. She is the fifth of six children and has three sisters and two brothers. Rachel loves sports. She plays soccer for Celtic Storm, is an incredible basketball player and swims breaststroke on the Lindon Swim team. She is an avid BYU fan and loves the Utah Jazz and Denver Broncos. Rachel is a talented pianist. She played a difficult Kabalevsky piece for her talent in the Little Miss Lindon Pageant. Rachel is kind and sometimes quiet but is fiercely competitive. She is excited to be in the Little Miss Lindon Royalty serving her community and making new friends.

AMANDA SCHNECK - ATTENDANT

Amanda is 12 years old and the youngest daughter of Mark and Kara Schneck. She is a life-long resident of Lindon who loves hiking the city’s trails and swimming at the Lindon Aquatics Center. An award-winning storyteller, competitive volleyball player and accomplished singer, Amanda knows the power of hard work and setting goals. For her pageant service project, Amanda personally made and donated 32 care packages and thank you cards to a local platoon deploying to Afghanistan. She also made a special package for the platoon chaplain – a Lindon resident – and his family. Amanda loves serving her community and looks forward to attending Oak Canyon Junior High School this fall. Lindon City Days • 7

grand marshals

www.acerents.net

Lindon residents David C. and Marilyn Thurgood have been chosen to serve as the grand marshals of the 2014 Lindon Days Grand Parade on Saturday, Aug. 9. The Thurgoods have lived in Lindon since 1970, moving to the city a year after their marriage. David was born in Clearfield, Utah, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Brigham Young University before and after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern California. Marilyn was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and grew up in Bountiful, Utah. She also attended BYU, which is where the couple met. David graduated from BYU

with a degree in civic engineering, which led him to a career in consulting engineering. The companies he worked for contracted with many cities to help them design infrastructure such as sewer and water systems. This included providing engineering services to Lindon City. Assigned to be his company’s contact with Lindon, David spent many years essentially acting as the city’s engineer, helping Lindon with a wide range of infrastructure improvements, street planning and land development reviews. This planning was critical because at the time, Lindon was about to experience explosive population growth. When the Thurgoods first moved to Lin-

David C. & Marilyn Thurgood don, the city’s population was about 1,200. Today, the city’s population is about 10,800. In the mid-1970s, David helped design Lindon’s sewer system. Before this system was built, all Lindon homes had septic tanks despite ground conditions making the area bad for septic systems. People weren’t happy when every street in town had to be dug up, but the sewer system has been good for Lindon. “But for that, I don’t think the city would have grown as it has,” David said. He also helped with improvements to the city’s water systems, including putting in the city’s pressurized irrigation system - a project that again required digging up the city streets. “So I didn’t learn my lesson from the first time I had to dig up every street in town,” David said with a chuckle. Ultimately, the project has saved money as it allows residents to water their yards using river water rather than culinary water. David has served on the boards of the Provo Bench Canal Company and the North Utah County Water Conservancy District and was president of the North Union Irrigation Company. He was named

Utah Engineer of the Year in 2008 by the American Council of Engineering Companies. He has coached youth soccer locally and served in Scouting during most of his adult life, receiving Scouting’s Silver Beaver Award. He has served in many positions in the LDS Church including as bishop of the Lindon 4th Ward from 1987 to 1993. In addition to supporting her husband in his work - including answering angry phone calls about tornup roads - Marilyn worked to raise the couple’s 10 children. The Thurgoods had children attending Lindon Elementary School for 25 consecutive years and Marilyn spent time volunteering in classrooms and serving as a member of the PTA. “One of our biggest accomplishments is our 10 children and their goodness,” Marilyn said. “They just do good things for everybody.” Marilyn has also served in many positions in the LDS Church, including as Young Women president and Relief Society president and as part of her stake Relief Society presidency. She and her husband served an LDS Mission to Norway from 2011 to 2013. The Thurgoods have 41 grandchildren.

Flag Retirement ceremony THURSDAY, AUGUST 7 7 p.m. Local Boy Scouts and the public are invited to be part of the second annual Flag Retirement Ceremony and Military Tribute planned on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Lindon Main Park Horse Arena, 200 N. Main. The Utah Army National Guard, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will be part of this event. Those attending should bring lawn chairs. Boy Scouts who wish to participate in the ceremony should dress in full uniform and arrive at 6:30 p.m. Angie Hendrickson, organizer of the event, said the flag retirement is a solemn, respectful ceremony where American flags that are worn out are retired from service and burned. “When a flag is old and in disrepair, you respectfully retire that flag,” she said. “There’s a proper way that you do it.” Henrickson oversaw the entire Lindon Days celebration last year and decided at that time to add the flag retirement ceremony to the list of events. She has a son in the National Guard and said she has always been very military-minded. This kind of ceremony “gives us another opportunity to show our respect in a different way for our flag, for our country and what it means to us,” she said. Members of the public who have worn-out flags they wish to be retired can drop them off anytime before the ceremony at the Lindon Community Center or the Lindon City Center or they can bring them to the ceremony on Aug. 7.

Commercial Market Update

The market is back! In many cases, values are nearing the 2007/2008 high point. Home prices in Lindon are up 19.2% since last summer and low interest rates will likely drive them higher.

All of the commercial sectors are heating up and some submarkets are getting tight. Business owners are finding it a great time to buy real estate with low SBA loan rates and a 10% down payment.

Maddie has shared the stage with country stars Chris Young, Ty Herndon, Jon Pardie, Due West and rock sensation Imagine Dragons. Maddie’s soaring vocals have been described as producing a “sugar rush to the brain” and eliciting comments such as, “I thought I was in heaven.” After she opened for a major country artist, both the artist and her manager said their jaws dropped and they were awestruck at Maddie’s amazing performance. Maddie is an accomplished musician who writes and plays guitar and piano. She is a small-town girl with country roots and Christian values. She loves riding horses and motorbikes and hanging out with family and friends. Her first EP, released in early 2012, takes listeners on a ride of summer fun, stupid boys, young love, tragedy and rodeo girls. The EP includes five originals written by Maddie and co-writer Stuart Maxfield. Her songs “Skirts” and “Mistie Girl” hit the Indie Country Charts in 2012. Both spent time at No. 1 and have been played on radio and Internet stations throughout the U.S. and the world. Maddie and her songwriting have been recognized in a number of ways including a licensing agreement with QVC and being named a finalist in two world-wide songwriting
