AF Chamber Community Events The American Fork Chamber of Commerce contracted with American Fork City in 2018 to manage and operate the city’s Steel Days celebration. Thanks to all the support from volunteers and businesses, it was one of the most successful city celebrations in recent history. The chamber and city renewed the contract for 2019, and we are excited to be involved again. The Chamber of Commerce has two additional fun community events in American Fork coming up in October and December. The first event is our annual Trick-or-Treat on Main where the businesses along Main Street in American Fork hand out treats to all of the little trick-or-treaters from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Halloween. Businesses who do not have a store front on Main Street can set-up a booth at Robinson Park (100 E. Main St.). This is always a fun event for the kids where they can interact with the businesses, including the American Fork Fire/Rescue and Police, and collect some goodies in a safe environment. This event is free to the public and free to the participating businesses. The Chamber will also be hosting the Third Annual Holiday Magic on Main parade and pictures with Santa, which will be held on Saturday, December 7th. It is extremely popular and a lot of fun, and there are plans to make it bigger and better each year. To kick things off, the Police Department will escort the Mayor and Santa into town on a fire truck at 5:30 p.m. They travel from Doug Smith Autoplex to the library where anyone

can have their picture taken with Santa and enjoy free hot chocolate and candy canes until 7:30 p.m. This year businesses and residents are invited to put together a lighted parade float (or truck/trailer) to accompany Santa on his journey to the library. Those attending are also invited to bring new mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves to decorate the library’s Mitten Tree that is set up to collect items to donate to local shelters. This event is also free to attend and participate in. The American Fork Chamber of Commerce has also recently formed the Lone Peak Business Alliance to serve the businesses and cities of Alpine, Cedar Hills, and Highland. We are currently working on creating similar events for the residents of each of those communities. Details for these events will be posted on the Chamber website. Please let us know if you are a local business and would like to participate in either Trick-or-Treat on Main or Holiday Magic on Main. If you would like more information or have any questions about these events or would like to learn more about the American Fork Chamber of Commerce or Lone Peak Business Alliance, please call 801-472-7467 or visit our website at americanforkchamber.org. History of Steel Days For over 100 years the city of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community, and residents. This annual celebration is now known as Steel Days, but throughout the years the festivities have also been called Timber Day, Liberty Day, and Poultry Day.

TIMBER DAY

Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment, and games. It began around 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers.” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out, and shared it with others. There were activities for young and old, with a horseshoe competition, foot races, and ball games. Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904.

lap. She simply wiped it up and went on with the day. The Sunrise Salute, or firing the cannon, continued at daybreak. There was a free lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served. There was a flower show, art show, and an all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater. There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression. Poultry Day was held in July 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war, with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944.

LIBERTY DAY

Liberty Day had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage. The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park. There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horse-drawn wagons. When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other. Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels. There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration. In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States. There was a baseball game, dance, and fireworks. The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events.

POULTRY DAY

In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration. It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic. There was also a parade, ball game, races, carnival, and a program and dance. Mary Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen. During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s 12 • American Fork Steel Days • 2019 • www.steeldaysaf.com

STEEL DAYS

Since 1945, Steel Days has been American Fork’s traditional celebration. Then-mayor O. De Vere Wootton decided Poultry Day no longer reflected the city’s economy. The newly constructed Columbia Steel Mill brought many newcomers, who made an impact on housing, utilities, traffic, and commerce. The mill became the largest employer in Utah Valley. Two individuals suggested “Steel Day” after a request for ideas for a name for the celebration. Steel Day was selected and was celebrated on Labor Day. In 1946, Steel Day was a full day of events, similar to Poultry Day. The American Fork Chamber of Commerce was also established that year and was involved in the planning of the Steel Day events. The parade featured numerous floats decorated for and by local businesses. Bands came from Tooele, Salt Lake City, Nephi, Payson, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Provo. The parade was presented twice for many years - at 10 a.m. from 500 West Main Street to 500 East and then at 6 p.m. when the route was reversed. The duration of Steel Days expanded from one day to three days, then four and five days, and eventually to ten days. Currently, Steel Days runs for eight days and includes over 30 events. Vehicles were also an important part of Steel Days history. In 1961, the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) held a drawing for a Ford Falcon. However, it did not prove to be enough of a draw and there was a

History of Steel Days $1,500 deficit after the ticket sales were tallied. The next year, the car was a sporty Thunderbird and ticket sales increased dramatically. The evening program featured a singing group from Ogden, “The Osmond Brothers,” complete with Donny, who even then stole the show. In 1963, the city used a smaller approach, calling it “Community Day.” It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks. Despite its success, there was no celebration in 1964 or 1965. Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration. There were, however, abbreviated queen pageants held. In 1966, a new committee was formed, and it was again a larger celebration that was now held in July. They also resumed using the Steel Days name. In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed and boat racing was added to the list of events. In 1968, the Big “City of Fun” Special Bargain Carnival made its Steel Days debut. The festivities remained mostly the same for the next several decades, with several of the events being part of the festivities every year and others being added or eliminated. In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday

were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer. In 2018, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce again became an integral part of the Steel Days celebration when it contracted with American Fork City to manage and operate Steel Days, a role that it is proud to fulfill in 2019 as well. This year we have added the Smoke & Steel BBQ Competition, a Kids Splash Night, and Pickleball and Spikeball Tournaments to the event line-up. Whether this has been a family tradition for several years or you’ve never celebrated with us, we invite you to come and enjoy all of the fun that Steel Days has to offer and make some memories of your own.

Grand Marshal

Carl D. Hansen

Carl D. Hansen will be honored as the Grand Marshal of the 2019 Steel Days Grand Parade on July 20, 2019. The parade will start at 9:30 that morning. Carl Hansen is married to Linda May Morrill of Pleasant Grove, and at 82-years-old, is a life-long resident of American Fork. His great grandparents on both sides of his family are early settlers of American Fork, with one of their original houses still standing (the Parley Parker Hansen home on the northwest corner of Center Street and 100 South). He attended Harrington Elementary, the old school located on Center Street, and the old American Fork High School on the hill. Hansen, his six children, and many of his grandchildren are American Fork High School graduates.

Hansen was hired in 1965 as American Fork’s City Engineer and worked closely with 8 different mayors; Glen Anderson, Haws Durfey, Neal Savage, Malcolm Beck, Kay Hutchings, Kent Evans, Jess Green, and Ted Baratt. During his 37 years of working for American Fork, he worked constantly to improve the city. He served on the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustments, Beautification Committee, and he attended

city council meetings where he coordinated his work projects and ideas with those in the city leadership. On behalf of the city, he applied for and received multiple grants from the government for improvements throughout the city, and in many cases the city would match his grant money. Hansen’s management and ingenuity saved the city millions of dollars during the years he served. As he engineered improvements for the city, Hansen was always planning for the future. When I-15 was built, he took a dirt road, 500 East, and designed a road complete with water, sewer lines, and curb & gutter to access the freeway. He ran sewer lines to the new hospital, Developmental Center, the Junior High, and to Highland. During the floods of 1982-1983, he researched and purchased the Gabion baskets from Reno that serve as retaining walls at the mouth of the canyon. Hansen designed the first City Complex Building, the Senior Citizen Center, the baseball fields on

Center Street, and the new addition to the city cemetery. He also drew up and laid out the plans for the Tri-City Golf Course (now called Fox Hollow Golf Club) Clubhouse and golf course. He created the plans for and supervised the dredging of the boat harbor and designed the harbor restrooms and improvements. He also initiated the purchase of the Boley, Highland, and Tri-City water wells as well as the installment of a valve for the springs at Swinging Bridge to protect the cleanliness of our water. Hansen drew a map of the old city fort along with many other drawings for the city, some of which are still hanging in city buildings today. He was respected by those he worked with for his honesty, integrity, and work ethic and was a very forward thinker who can be credited with multiple improvements made to American Fork during his time working for the city. In addition to his service to American Fork City, Hansen has volunteered in many other capacities throughout the community. He spent many years as a Little League and Junior Jazz coach for youth in the city, assisting with countless teams. He has also served in many leadership positions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including that of bishop. He is very passionate about his yard and still maintains it himself by weeding, mowing and edging, pruning, and planting flowers and a large garden, all at 82-years-old. He was awarded the Yard of the Month Award in the summer of 2018. Hansen is always striving to keep his yard beautiful and American Fork City a wonderful community to live in. He has spent a lifetime serving American Fork, and it is our privilege to honor him for a job well done.

Garden Tour

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, JULY 12 & 13

The American Fork Beautification Committee, in conjunction with the Steel Days Celebration, invites residents to attend the Seventh Annual Garden Tour on Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13. Thomas Edison said, “Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” The same is true of gardening, but a moment of inspiration can save hours of perspiration. During the Seventh Annual Steel Days Garden Tour,

residents will have the opportunity to stroll through the gardens of several devoted Master Gardeners. Those attending are encouraged to ask questions and glean ideas for their own planting and gardening efforts. This year’s Garden Tour promises to be filled with many hours of inspiration. There will be something for every gardener from the novice to the expert, and we hope you enjoy this Steel Days tradition.

Kickball Tournament

FRIDAY, JULY 12 • ART DYE PARK The second annual co-ed Kickball Tournament will be on Friday, July 12 starting at 6:00 p.m., and it will continue until there is a clear winner, even if that isn’t until 2:00 a.m. This will be the “full-on” type of kickball that we all loved to play in grade school. It will be played with a rubber play-ground kickball, bases, and outs made by throwing the ball at the runner. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held 1/2 hour before the event. Games will be played at Art Dye Park (1000 N. 550 E.). The cost for registration is $90 per team of up to 16 players (8 players - 4 women and 4 men - are on the field at a time), and the registration deadline is July 9. Miss American Fork 2018 A TITLE THAT LASTS A YEAR, MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME By Amelia Wesemann As the current Miss American Fork, Taylor Colby, prepares to pass along her title this July, she reflects on her experience over the past year and what made holding the position so special. When asked to describe her experience over the past year as Miss American Fork in three words, Taylor Colby responded, “Humbling, Service-oriented, and Enlightening.” She served our community as Miss American Fork for over a year, and said it was the best year of her life. “American Fork is the best city hands down. I think what is unique is how close, welcoming and supportive our community is,” Colby says. “We do not think twice to help a neighbor in need and when Steel Days comes around, or really any event, we are all there enjoying each other’s company.” As part of her service as Miss American Fork, Taylor volunteered at Everest Arts and Learning Center here in American Fork. Everest Arts is a place that assists those with intellectual disabilities to develop skills and talents in a safe environment, and Taylor loved volunteering there weekly. When asked about her service, she said, “The best part of being Miss American Fork was the opportunity I had to meet and serve new people. In particular, I have had the chance to meet and volunteer at Everest Arts and Learning Center in American Fork. They have become some of my closest friends, and I have loved the time I have spent there weekly and am so grateful for the friendships that will no doubt continue even after my year of serving as Miss American Fork is over.” Taylor Colby said serving our city and community taught her more than she ever could have imagined or expected. “I learned the value of simple kindness,” she says, “As cliche as it may sound, it is so true. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to interact with others and see how simple gestures like a smile to anyone of any age is appreciated more than we even know.” Taylor adds that through this experience she has learned that people are her passion, and she can’t wait to see where furthering her education at Utah Valley University this fall will take her as she carries these valuable lessons. She says this year has shaped her into a person who always looks to serve others, because that is where she finds true happiness. Colby advises the next Miss American Fork to enjoy her year serving the community, and adds, “Often the most important service is rendered without a crown.” 22 • American Fork Steel Days • 2019 • www.steeldaysaf.com

Steel Days Car Show Memories

The American Fork Steel Days Car Show is a long-standing tradition, and thousands of people come to Rotary Park to see a wide variety of vehicles. The owners of these vehicles have put a lot of time, care, and money into these machines and each car comes with its own unique story. Check out the following stories and then come to the Car Show and see if you can find these vehicles on display! “I moved to Utah with my family in 2010. After 24 years in Florida, the last 15 of which I owned a 27-ft cabin cruiser, I felt lost without a hobby. I was in a new state, with new business contacts, and new people just didn’t seem to fill that void. I had several cars during the 70’s, so when I saw this ‘72 El Camino in an impound yard, those good memories came rushing back. After some hard work and a lot of cleaning, I discovered Cruise Nights and Car Shows - I had a new hobby! This was a major turning point for me. I found these events to be more than “just some classic cars” and was amazed at the close family feel. I’ve met so many great people and made so many new friends. Together we can fix anything pertaining to a car! A few years after getting the car running, I proudly became a sponsor of Rockin’ Hot Rod Productions. It felt good to give back. These events, the great people, and the beautiful cars round out my otherwise hectic, self-employed life. Eventually, I was able to restore and upgrade my car. Now going to a show is more exciting and the season of cruising is a beautiful thing to look forward to.” -Bill Pascucci “I am writing to tell my story of my 1970 Dodge Charger 500. I first laid eyes on her back in ‘98 at the UVU Car Show. It had a For Sale sign in 28 • American Fork Steel Days • 2019 • www.steeldaysaf.com

the window, and I asked the owner, “How much?” I made an offer, and he told me that he needed to talk to his wife before he could sell it. I returned an hour later to see if he could accept my offer. He said that his wife would rather have a house than the car, and I picked it up less than a mile from my house in American Fork. I have lived in AF my whole life and still reside there. My Charger and I are very much alike, having spent our whole lives in the great city of American Fork! The car sat in my garage for over 20 years. It’s an all original, numbers matching, 383 2bbl A/C car. In 2018, I decided it was time to take the car back to its original Y4 Light Gold metallic color and have a complete restoration done. The classic license plate reflects the car - ”CHRGR”. My car and I will forever be honored to call American Fork home!” -Jason Miller “’Pop-I’s Betty Boop’ was owned by my grandpa. He always told me that when I graduated he would give it to me as my graduation present. In 2006, he had to sell the car. After he sold it, he never wanted to talk about the car or where it went. He passed away in March of 2009, and we never knew where the car went. In October of 2016, we were in Lake Havasu, Arizona to spread my grandpa’s ashes. We were visiting a friend of his who told us that he knew where the car was and that it might be for sale. We went and looked at the car and the owner told us he would sell it. In February of 2017, we bought the car back. To our knowledge, the vehicle still has the original paint and engine. We also found the original owner’s manual and the 2 year protection plan with owners plaque and delivery date from Capital Chevrolet in Salt Lake in the glove compartment. The original spare tire is still in the vehicle too. We also have reinstated the original Utah ‘65 license plate from when my grandpa owned it back onto the car. An interesting about the license plate is the number is “EC 1306”. EC are my grandpa’s initials (for Ernest Cooper). 13 is my birthday, and ‘06 is the year that he had sold the car.” -Alex Brown

AF Symphony & Chorale Concert MONDAY, JULY 15 • QUAIL COVE PARK AMPHITHEATER This year the American Fork Symphony will be joined by the Timpanogos Chorale for a combined concert that will keep the Steel Days celebration going with a patriotic musical celebration of America. This concert will be held on Monday, July 15 in the outdoor Amphitheater at Quail Cove Park (851 E. 700 N.). The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the posting of Colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and Taps by the National Guard. There will be a pre-show performance by The Hoover Jam after which the Symphony and Chorale will perform. The American Fork Symphony was organized in 1994 under the direction of Conductor Dr. Gordon Childs, who had retired from the University of Wyoming with the rank of Professor Emeritus of Music and moved to Orem, Utah. The symphony was part of the American Fork Arts Council, and was partially funded by American Fork City and grants from the Utah Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and private contributors. Over the years, the symphony has performed under the baton of several talented conductors and continues to bring high quality music to the residents of American Fork and beyond. The Timpanogos Chorale is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide members with vocal opportunities, to aid in the development of their musical talents and skills, to assist in the development of their appreciation for beautiful music from diverse cultures and genres, and to present such music to the community. The chorale started in 1963 and was originally called the American Fork

Civic Choir. Both the American Fork Symphony and the Timpanogos Chorale are part of the Timpanogos Arts Foundation. TAF was founded in 2003 to support American Fork City’s growing Arts Council. In 2011, all of the city’s arts programs were turned over to the foundation. The Timpanogos Arts Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit arts organization with the mission to “educate, enrich, and inspire by providing leadership and encouragement for artistic and cultural excellence, which enhances the quality of life for the people of American Fork and neighboring communities.”

History of the City of Fun Carnival in American Fork Pleasant Grove’s Lou Melendez’s family owns and operates the City of Fun Carnival, which appears in American Fork every year during Steel Days. People who attend the carnival may not know of its origins, so close to home. In the 1960s, they had an empty week in their schedule and approached American Fork, proposing a celebration in which the city would sell the tickets for 15 cents instead of the going rate of 25 cents. All rides would take one ticket per ride all three days of the carnival’s run. American Fork accepted, and the carnival is still a part of Steel Days today. At other towns, the carnival offers dollar day on opening day only. The prices have increased according to the expenses, but in American Fork the rides are still one ticket each if purchased as part of the SteelDeal promotion. In the early days, cotton candy was 15 cents, popcorn was a dime, and drinks were a nickel. The carnival started in 1959 with two rides, the Wild Mouse and the Junior Speedway. Elvis Presley and Natalie Wood once rode the family’s Wild Mouse. Their first merry-goround was a Hershall Spellman 3 abreast. The horses arrived in crates and had to be assembled before they were put on the ride. Lou’s wife, Lois Melendez, was given her first floss machine at a Fourth of July celebration in Murray, Utah. Lou set the machine on a crate, gave her sticks and sugar and told her to figure it out. Luckily, a customer offered to show her how to spin sugar and in no time

she was spinning three machines at a time. Lois and her daughter Pam also learned to drive the big rigs. Lois had an article about her in a trucker’s magazine. She drove until she was in her 70s and Pam is still driving, pulling the HazMats and doubles. Lou Melendez had back surgery in 2008 and was hospitalized for three months. He did therapy and worked hard to get back on his feet and he was back on the road the following fall. The family recently purchased a new FireBall and a couple of tractors. They run 19 trucks, with three sets of doubles, and have six pickups with 10 trailers. They have three bunk units and a shower truck. Their game concessions are run by Dennis Ewell Concessions and food is handled by Dream Catchers Cafe. Their sweet wagons are family owned and operated. Pam serves as general manager of the carnival. Lou and Lois’s daughter, Teresa, does the candy apples, and their son, Brad, maintains the shops and does repairs. Lou and Lois have eight grandchildren. Bradley, Jr. travels and does repairs on the road, welding and electrical work.

AFHS MARCHING BAND SPONSORED BY

Each year, we are proud to present the Grand Parade to more than 12,000 people. This year, the parade will be on Saturday, July 20 at 9:30 a.m. The route will be the same as it was in previous years, with the parade starting at 300 W. Main Street and heading east on Main Street to 100 E. The parade will then turn left and head north to 400 N. As the city continues to grow, we have seen an increase in the number of people trying to reserve spots on the parade route. The committee respectfully requests that reservation of spots not take place until Friday, July 19, after 5:00 p.m. and that spectators be respectful of businesses, churches, residents and others who own property along the parade route. It is our goal to make the parade as entertaining and enjoyable as possible. In order to do so, we need to make safety our highest priority. Please stay out of the road since many floats and parade vehicles have difficult and limited lines of sight. Everyone loves seeing the excitement of children collecting candy and prizes, and we want to continue this tradition. Please help us to do this by not allowing children to run into the road to collect

candy. Parade participants have been instructed to distribute candy near the sides of the road. As the parade concludes, please help us take pride in our community and keep it clean by collecting any trash that is around you or that you see and depositing it into the trash receptacles that will be placed along the parade route. Please remember that Steel Days and the Grand Parade are meant to bring the community together to celebrate our great city. Let’s have fun and be respectful to everyone around us, including spectators, parade entries, and volunteers. Pre-Show Entertainment SATURDAY, JULY 20 • ART DYE PARK dedicated his life to pursuing FEATURING: RYAN INNES

Fan favorite on NBC’s “The Voice,” Ryan Innes, will perform as the show opener before the Steel Days Big Show headliner act, Foreign Figures, on Saturday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Art Dye Park. Innes turned heads and gained popularity when he received a four-chair turn on “The Voice.” From there, he was mentored by Usher and fellow-grammy winner Pharell Williams and fought a tough battle throughout the remainder of his time on the show, becoming a crowd favorite and joy to watch onstage. Originally from Arizona, Ryan Innes was classically trained on the piano and sang in local choirs and musical groups. Although these experiences introduced Innes to the possibilities of music and he enjoyed performing in these settings, the traditional and classical music didn’t quite connect with him on an emotional level. It wasn’t until he discovered R&B that his deep love for music really blossomed. However, Innes didn’t immediately pursue a career in music. He first earned a pre-med degree only to realize his passion didn’t lie in the medical field, but in the world of performing. Innes made a leap of faith and

a career as an artist and performer. He enrolled at Brigham Young University, studying in the highly respected Media Music Program. It was there where he further developed his talents, along with joining Vocal Point, a popular a capella group. In 2010, Innes recorded a self-titled EP produced by R Legacy Entertainment. Featuring covers of classics like Ray Charles’ “Georgia On My Mind” and Amos Lee’s “Colors”, the record showcased Innes’ penchant for soulful and vocally charged productions. While working on the EP, Innes spent time in Nashville and further developed his songwriting skills. Returning to Utah, Innes began performing solo shows, promoting his EP and gaining a loyal following with his original songs and captivating covers. While gaining popularity in the local music scene, Innes landed a residency at The Montage in Park City, Utah. The new gig not only allowed him to quit his day job, but also to continue to polish his performing and songwriting skills. With his new residency, Innes was able to explore original material in front of new audiences. Innes says the experience of playing covers also

Pre-Show Entertainment helped him as a songwriter because he was able to see how those classic songs struck a chord with listeners. From there, he went on to appear on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2013. Innes is currently working on his debut album, integrating his classical characteristic of raw, human authenticity. He has co-written with Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, Stuart Maxfield of Fictionalist, and McKay Stevens and Nate Pyfer, gaining experience and credibility that will roll over into his own album. Ryan Innes will indubitably bring an engaging and memorable start to The Big Show this year while retaining his title of a fan-favorite in American Fork. Before Ryan takes the stage, we will have the finalists from the American Fork Sing-off perform for the audience. These singers are some of the top talent in the area, and we are excited to have them be part of the show!

THE CINCH LIFE JOHN BUCKNER

I want to thank American Fork City and the AF Chamber of Commerce for asking me to help with Steel Days. It's going to be a great show!

WHAT IS THE CINCH LIFE? The Cinch Life implies that life is easy, but we all know that it’s not. What does make life a bit easier is getting to create a dream you are passionate about. The Cinch Life is my business that models my two passions in life: first, selling and investing in real estate; and second, experiencing music! I spend most of my time in my two most passionate areas!

HOW DO YOU FIT REAL ESTATE AND MUSIC TOGETHER? I enjoy helping people buy, sell, and invest in real estate. Real estate is a crazy world with a lot of twists and turns. After 20 years and thousands of real estate negotiations, developments, fixes, flips, etc., I understand the process with fine detail. Even more importantly, I understand the emotional part of purchasing and selling a home. The investment side is a bit less emotional and more number driven, but can still be stressful for a new investor. I found that I get a similar feeling helping others get the keys to their new home as I did playing on stage in front of tens of thousands of fans. I love it!

HOW WAS IT HELPING PUT THE FIRST LOVELOUD MUSIC FESTIVAL TOGETHER? I had the privilege of helping Dan Reynolds, lead singer for Imagine Dragons, start the first LoveLoud music festival at UVU. It was one of the most difficult and most rewarding experiences of my life. Standing in the middle of 20,000 people unified by the music they feel and love, was a magical experience. It didn't even reach the feeling of drumming on stage with Neon Trees in front of 80,000 people, but almost! It is something I want to share with all of Utah and do it in my home town in American Fork!

ARE YOU PLANNING ANY MUSIC FESTIVALS IN THE FUTURE? I am planning on putting on a festival of all festivals in 2020. I can't reveal very much at this time, but it will be something Utah has never seen before!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? I am most excited about the combination of my two passions! For this festival, I am creating an Ultra VIP experience for my clients. It will be right up front with free food, beverages, and special access to the stage and other "to be revealed" perks that no ticketed fan will be allowed to be a part of. The only way in is to have purchased or sold a home through my real estate team. It's my way of giving back to those who trust me with the largest financial decision of their lives!

HOW CAN WE HELP CONTRIBUTE? The largest cost of this new festival is bringing in the big bands and artists that everyone wants to see. I am self funding a lot of this and need to hit some pretty large numbers on the homeselling front to pay for this event. My team and I would love for you to be one of those who get to come experience this festival for free. Let your friends and family know about thecinchlife.com and we can help them with any real estate questions they might have!

Formed in late 2014 by Seth Dunshee, Jonny Tanner, and brothers Eric and Steve Michels, their unique blend of alt pop is a pure collaboration between four very different artists, mixing vulnerable emotion with

Within their first two years the group wrote, produced, and independently released both an EP and an album, amassing thousands of downloads and millions of streams in over 25 different countries. Leading to licensing deals with TVLand, TuneCore and Fox, their initial success also allowed the band’s charismatic live performance to be seen alongside multiple national touring acts, sharing the stage with the likes of X Ambassadors, American Authors, Smallpools, The Aces, and Lukas Graham. Foreign Figures spent the majority of their third year together writing on the road, completing two tours throughout the Western, Central, and Southern United States. In September 2018, they released the Overzealous EP, a 6 song effort that quickly garnered praise from the likes of AP magazine, Idobi radio, and Popdust. Rather than holding onto new songs for future releases, the band decided to release a quick follow up to Overzealous in the form of the 2 track Dangerous EP in October 2018. They have been invited and are scheduled to play at the 2019

The Big Show LoveLoud festival with some of the top bands in this region of the United States. By combining multiple types of music, Foreign Figures adds a unique twist to typical pop songs and brings fun new energy with them to every stage, leaving concert attendees with an unforgettable concert experience. The band plans to bring a show to American Fork unlike any seen in the past, with a high-energy tempo and catchy songs intended to get the whole crowd moving. Foreign Figures is known to bring unexpected twists to all of their shows and songs, and will keep the residents of American Fork on their toes. “I think what makes Foreign Figures stand out is who we are as people. We strive to make our community inclusive of everyone, uniting under the fact that we are all a foreign figure to something at some point.” says lead singer EJ Michels. “We are catching the eyes of the public and our hard work from the past 5 years is finally paying off. We can’t wait to show American Fork who we are and bring a show designed to inspire and entertain. This performance will be a memory you won’t forget.” Michels went on to say that the concert attendees will love the passionate show Foreign Figures plans to bring, and he is excited to showcase the talent of his band. Although the band is local and from just South in Orem, they are on the brink of national success and have a significant hype surrounding them. Foreign Figures will no doubt be among the big names someday, so this opportunity to see them perform at The Big Show is something you won’t want to miss.

SATURDAY, JULY 20 • ART DYE PARK

The annual Steel Days fireworks display has become a highly anticipated part of American Fork’s city celebration. Over the years this show has become known as one of the better fireworks displays in Utah County. Residents are not going to want to miss the 2019 fireworks show. The fireworks are launched from west of the baseball fields at Art Dye Park (1000 N. 550 E.) and will be shot off immediately after the end of The Big Show concert (around 10:00 p.m.), which will also take place at Art Dye Park. While the fireworks are visible from all over the city, audience members attending The Big Show will have the best seats for enjoying them. The concert is free and will feature local band Foreign Figures.

Auto repair shop helps customers make informed decisions Since 2005, World Class Auto Repair has been the first choice for vehicle repair and maintenance in North Utah County, being the largest independent mechanic garage in the area with 11 service bays. While checking out every vehicle and before recommending any service, owner Rod Martin asks himself one question: “What if this were my Mom’s car? What services would I recommend and which ones can wait a little while?” His parents live over 500 miles away in Oregon, so he can’t personally work on their cars. When Rod started World Class Auto, he wanted his shop to be the one that treats its customers like he would want his parents to be treated. . Rod trains his technicians to always do a bumper to bumper visual inspection on every car that comes in, so they can best help their customers make a good, informed decision. That way, people have a better idea what kind of repairs or maintenance they may need now, or down the road, based on priority. “We don’t want our customers spending a dime on their car unless they know what kind of shape the car is in as a whole, and they know exactly what they are getting, and how it’s going to help get them the most miles for their dollars.” World Class Auto has the distinction of being the only 62 • American Fork Steel Days • 2019 • www.steeldaysaf.com
