Active Asia has introduced a heritage walking tour with high tea at the Strand Hotel in Yangon (previously known as Rangoon). Valentina Mould-Morelli, director of creative and marketing at Active Asia says Yangon is a city of street vendors, fortune tellers, teashops, colonial heritage architecture, bookstalls, mosques, churches, temples, stupas, monasteries, and nonstop activity. ‘Clients who are passionate history and architecture followers are taken on a fascinating story-telling discovery behind the city’s grand dames of colonial architecture,’ she adds. ‘There is no better way to end the heritage walk than with a high tea at the Strand Hotel. The Strand Yangon was established in 1901 by the Sarkies brothers and it’s the oldest hotel in the city.’ Above: Heritage Walking Tour with High Tea at the Strand Hotel.

10th EcoTrail event heads to Wicklow, Ireland

Wicklow is to become the 10th destination worldwide to host the international Ecotrail event. On Saturday, 28 September 2019, runners from around the world will compete across a selection of scenic, but challenging, routes: 17km, 28km, 42km and 80km. The trails will be through Wicklow’s most scenic locations including Powerscourt Waterfall, Bray Head, Killruddery Gardens, The Great Sugarloaf, the Wicklow Way, Lough Tay viewing point and Piers Gate and all the way to Roundwood and the Vartry Reservoir. ‘This event will be a scenic feast,’ says Fred Verdier from Wicklow County Tourism. ‘Exclusive access to the worldrenowned Powerscourt and Kilruddery Estates will enhance the experience and any running enthusiast should have this event on their ‘must do’ list.’ Ecotrail was first organised in Paris ten years ago with a stunning finish on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower. The Ecotrail concept has been recreated around Europe and is now held in Reykjavik, Oslo, Stockholm, Brussels, Geneva, Florence, Madrid and Funchal (Madeira). ‘Trail Running is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world,’ says Jean Charles Perrin, Ecotrail founder and CEO of Ecotrail International. ‘Wicklow is a fantastic addition, and having seen the beauty of Wicklow late last year, Ecotrail Wicklow might just become one of our most popular events.’ wicklow.ecotrail.com/ Walking New Zealand, issue no 256 - 2019 5

There is an island in the middle of the lake that acts as a wildlife refuge. The water levels of the lake are controlled via inlet and outlet valves and the water comes from the Waiwhakaio River and the naturally cleaned water from the nearby Peringa Park Wetlands Rotomanu is a man made lake originally created as a quarry in the 1960’s. In 1902 it was required for the purpose of a public abattoir for the borough of New Plymouth. In 2008 the nearby Peringa Park Wetland wa s c r e a t e d a l o n g side the popular lake near the mouth of the Waiwhakaio River in an effort to protect the lakes water quality. There are two main parts to the reserve which stretches from the end of the Fitzroy Seaside Park to the Waiwhakaiho River. Eco systems within the reserve include wind buffeted exposed sand dunes, wetlands, a recreational area and an 18 hole golf course. The Coastal Walkway/cycle track joins the reserve on its western side and extends across the northern end of the golf course amidst wind swept dune vegetation to the Waiwhakaiho River and across the Te Wera Wera Bridge to the east along the extended coastal walkway. The walkway around the lake is flat and on grass, easy walking and dog

Lake Rotomanu walkway friendly. There is an upper and lower path. Both tracks are between the lake and the Waiwhakaiho River. The upper path takes you along the top bank of the river and the lower track along the lakeside. If taking the top track you can see both the lake and the river. There is parking at both ends of the lake, at the top end on the right as you turn off Clemow Road and the lake comes into view and also the bottom end by the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. An additional short walk is the Peringa Park Wetland Walk, entrance opposite the lake and situated off the side of the road between the top and lower car park. This short walk is a circle that leads back onto the road and has several board walks. In this complete area you are spoiled for walks of all different time durations. around the circuit and taking in the Peringa Wetland would be about an hour. It is not recommended swimming in the lake due to algae content. Access by vehicle to the lake, the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and the mouth of the river is from the end of Clemow Road in the suburb of Fitzroy. This will take you into the reserve. Access to the walk if starting from above the lake is behind the toilet at the end of the top car park. From behind the toilet veer right and up a slight grassy hill you will see the entrance in a stand of trees, (signposted). If starting the walk from the Te Rewa Rewa end at the bottom of the lake, the entrance is through to the end of the car park. Above: Cyclists stop to rest and enjoy the scenery. My Favourite Walk

up Mount Parihaka, Whangarei By Heather Whelan

M

y favourite walk takes me to the summit of Whangarei’s Mount Parihaka. There are several tracks around and up the mountain – I usually take the Drummond Track to the summit and loop back following the Dobbie and Hokianga Tracks. Parihaka is so named because in the early 1700s local Maori, who had their pa at the summit, performed a haka to insult and frighten their enemies, the attacking Waikato tribes. The warriors emerged onto the paringa (pari) -steep scarps and cliffs around the pa - to dance their defiance. Unfortunately the locals were defeated, though the name Parihaka, commemorating the battle lived on. (In the twentieth century the mountain became erroneously called Parahaki but the name was corrected by the New Zealand Geographic Board in 2005.) The well maintained mountain tracks wend their way up through the bushcovered slopes of the ancient volcanic cone, with wooden staircases at the steepest points. The native bush is thick with ponga, Left: View from Parihaka summit.

Many tracks lead up Mount Parihaka, Whangarei nikau and cabbage trees, while soaring above are rimu, totara, matai, tanekaha and kauri. The Drummond Track starts beside the footbridge over the Hatea River in Mair Park. On the left is a memorial plaque to the botanist Norman Drummond who donated 24 acres of bush in the 1940s. The Ross and Dobbie Tracks are also named for locals who gifted land on Parihaka to the council. It takes around 40 minutes to walk the 1.4km to the mountain top from here. There are stunning views out across

Whangarei and up the harbour from Parihaka’s summit. A carved kohatu (limestone rock) represents the mauri - or life essence - of the mountain. There are also sign boards here that tell of Mount Parihaka’s history. Just below the summit, the path loops around, becoming the Dobbie Track. This follows the edge of Parihaka’s volcanic cone before passing a side track to one of the other pa sites on the mountain. There are remains of terraces, house sites and kumara storage pits near the tracks, dating back to the time when around 2,000 people lived here. The track’s name changes again beside the pa – to the Hokianga Track. On this section the walk passes through a grove of towering kauri. The Dob-

bie/Hokianga Track is less steep than the Drummond but is slightly longer at 1.9km. The final part of this loop follows the river, along the Hatea River Walkway. This is a peaceful, shady track, popular with families. Children love to feed the ducks that gather near the footbridge. There are four entrances to Mount Parihaka. From Rurumoki Street a path leads through Mair Park, donated in 1914 by Robert Mair, another local philanthropist. At one end of the Hatea River Walkway is the Vale Road entrance, at the other end is Whareora Road. From Dundas Road, the Ross Track goes up another side of the mountain. This 40 minute, 1.4km, walk follows a stream–at one point a staircase takes the walker up beside a waterfall. There is an entrance to an old gold mine near here. Bring a torch if you want to explore.

Mokihinui River catchment land to be added to Kahurangi National Park

A

total of 64,400 hectares of conservation land in the Mokihinui River catchment on the West Coast north of Westport, including 15 km of riverbed, is being added to Kahurangi National Park. Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage last month announced the largest addition of land to an existing national park in New Zealand’s history. A total of 64,400 hectares of conservation land in the Mokihinui River catchment on the West Coast north of Westport, including 15 km of riverbed, is being added to Kahurangi National Park. “Adding this area, roughly half the size of Auckland City, to Kahurangi is the largest addition of land to an existing national park in New Zealand’s history,” Eugenie Sage said. “National park status will ensure stronger protection of the Mokihinui area’s significant cultural, ecological, historic and recreational values. “A hydro-electric dam was proposed for the Mokihinui River in 2007. The hydro scheme attracted considerable public interest and strong opposition because of its environmental impacts. “It would have flooded the Mokihinui Gorge and inundated beech-podocarp forests and significant habitats of threatened plants and wildlife such as whio/blue duck, kaka, bats and giant land snails. “A big thanks to the many New Zealanders and the Department of Conservation who spoke up for the river, its gorge, dramatic landscapes, beech-podocarp forests and set out the reasons they deserved protection from a hydro dam. “The decision in 2012 not to proceed with the hydro scheme was followed by a groundswell of support for giving national park status to the Mokihinui catchment and adding these lands to Kahurangi National Park,” Eugenie Sage said.

www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

“Protecting these lands means generations to come will be able to enjoy these beautiful natural landscapes, ride along the Old Ghost Road track alongside the Mokihinui River, and see and hear birds like whio and kaka. “New Zealanders love our protected national parks which hold international as well as national value. This Government is protecting more of our precious and pristine places. “The Mokihinui lands become part of Kahurangi National Park on 11 April 2019. “The land being added to the national park stretches inland through the length of the Mokihinui River catchment. “It includes about 15 km of the Mokihinui riverbed, all of the Mokihinui Forks Ecological Area, a large part of the Lyell Range-Radiant Range conservation area and a small part of what remains of North West Nelson Forest Park, most of which became Kahurangi National Park when it was established in 1996. “The addition connects with the south-west boundary of Kahurangi National Park. “The Mokihinui addition to Kahurangi National Park is equivalent in size to Abel Tasman and Paparoa National Parks combined and is twice the size of Egmont National Park. “Kahurangi is our second largest park

and with the addition of the Mokihinui land, it will increase in size by 14 per cent to 517,335 hectares. Fiordland National Park, at more than 1,230,000 hectares, is the largest national park.” The Mokihinui River catchment contains a combination of geology, landforms, riverine habitat, vegetation, animal and plant life and related ecological processes not found elsewhere. The area has characteristic landforms and geological formations, such as the Mokihinui Gorge, and extends from the mountains to almost sea level. The diversity of forest types within the area supports a wide range of native birds, including whio, kākā, and kea. There is a nationally significant longtailed bat population, four sub species of Powelliphanta snail, six reptile species, freshwater vertebrates and invertebrates and a variety of plant species. The area is of high significance to Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Waewae. The temperate climate, fertile environment and safe harbours made it an important place to gather and replenish food stores before journeying south along a stretch of difficult coastline. The land contains the popular Old Ghost Road, the 85km-long mountain biking and walking trail developed by Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust working with the Department of Conservation and others.

ork on the Waiuku Trails is officially underway after a ceremonial sod-turning event in March. Franklin Local Board and Waiuku Trails Implementation Committee members joined the public and volunteers to watch board and committee chairs Angela Fulljames and Barry Gibbon turn the first soil on the project. The board has committed $300,000 to the trails project but deputy chair Andy Baker says it would be pointless but for the hard work of volunteers who came together on Auckland Council’s first community-led project. “We have a unique situation where the council has found a way to enable the community to implement a project of some scale and we are grateful to our colleagues for that. “Waiuku’s Mudlarks need to be commended because we would not be able to see the water, let alone the other side, if not for them. People said removing the mangroves was a pipe dream, but without their commitment there would be no point in having a walkway.” Blessing the project, kaumatua George Flavell said he walked the area every day and was honoured to be

involved in preserving a beautiful and relaxing space for future generations. Board member Sharlene Druyven said Waiuku was a fabulous community and the desire to build the trails was reflected in the speed with which the project was advancing. “Lions, Rotary, iwi, the Mudlarks, businesses, the yacht club, the list goes on. People have been so keen to be involved. This is all about the future and creating a wonderful amenity for the community.” That was reflected on the day, when Blue Scope Steel’s Glenbrook mill chief executive Gretta Stephens announced the company would provide the base course for the track. “We are very much a part of this community, so we are delighted to be a small part in a project that is bringing so many in the area together.” Committee chair Barry Gibbon welcomed the gesture. “Every dollar we don’t spend on materials like the base course gets us another metre further towards our goal.” Board member Brendon Crompton says everyone involved can be proud of what has been achieved.

“I recall when we first met we had maps and markers out within 15 minutes charting the path, and we had a plan before the board inside four months.” Auckland Council project delivery head John Schermbrucker said the Waiuku community had been fabulous to deal with. “As a community-led project, this is a first and Waiuku has set the bar pretty high.” Work will start at the Tamakae Reserve, and the development will also ensure the Awaroa portage is protected because of its significance to mana whenua, who also serve on the walkways committee.

Waiuku advocate wins outdoor access champion award

Waiuku’s Barry Gibbon received an Outdoor Access Champion Award in March for his work leading the Waiuku Trails Project. The Walking Access Commission Ara Hīkoi Aotearoa present the Outdoor Access Champion awards each year to people who have made significant and lasting contributions to public access to the outdoors in New Zealand. Barry Gibbon is a keen tramper and passionate resident of Waiuku. He has chaired the Franklin Local Board’s Waiuku Trails Project Committee he has worked closely with local iwi, residents, businesses, contractors and council staff to get everybody’s support for the trails. These walking and cycling trails will add to the Waiuku community. They will provide residents and visitors with the opportunity to walk safely in and around the township, experiencing the history and culture on offer. The Waiuku Trails will link the foreshore area, open space, esplanade reserves, parks and residential streets with key destinations and the heart of Waiuku town centre itself.

of clothing, on a lovely Summers day ! We spotted several falcons and lots of ‘llao llao’ or Indian Bread. These are little parasitic fungi, growing all over the beech trees. They look like bright orange golf balls, and smell and taste like mushrooms. The day ended with hot Chocolate and cake, to warm us before the return bus trip. Our second walk was through Tierra Mayor Natural Reserve near Ushuaia. This trek was over wetlands and peat bog, through a stand of Lenga to the upper limit of the tree line and return. Looking out over this area, all we could see was rust coloured bog, and dead trees. At Refugio Nunatak we were provided with knee length gumboots, and Above left: Old Man’s Beard clings to the branches. Above right: The forest trail. soon discovered why. Within 15 minutes, my leg was sucked into a deep hole. Although it didn’t take long to pull my leg out, it took the guide considerably longer to retrieve the boot. We soon reached the area of dead trees – a result of beaver activity. In 1946, 25 pairs of Canadian beavers were Above left: Vegetation on peat bog at Tirra Mayor Natural Reserve. introduced to promote the fur industry, but this never developed. With no natural predators, the beavers have destroyed or modified a large area of the forest. We wandered on into the beech forest, past clumps of native orchids and yellow violets.

As the trees became more stunted, we reached a waterfall with five cascades – our destination. After a photo stop we retraced our steps to Nunatak; where we retrieved our shoes, and arrived back to Ushuaia just in time to watch a Tango display in the main Street – A fitting end to a lovely day.

My Favourite Walk Northland Experience

Magical experiences on the Cook to Kupe tour

By Steph Godsiff

Cook to Kupe Cycling Tour rich in history, culture, scenery, quirky towns, interesting locals, boutique accommodation, gastronomical delights and magical experiences.

It was with great excitement that I packed my bag for the next five nights! I am lucky enough to live in the Bay of Islands and a walking and cycling company asked me if I would like to accompany them on a trial of one of their new tours namely the Cook to Kupe Above: Crossing a bridge on the Pou Herenga Coast Cycle Trail. Northland Experience

Cycling Tour. I jumped at the chance. I have always been a keen cyclist and have plenty of trips under my belt, albeit most of them many years ago. My favourite one was when I was in my late 20’s cycling from Mexico down to Chile. This took a year and the first month I spent swinging between tantrums and sobbing as it was so hard and my training trips round Richmond Park in London had not prepared me. It turned out to be the trip of a lifetime and I was hooked. I have never been a “tour” person so my initial thought about this tour around Northland was “let’s see how this goes”. The tour is named ‘Cook to Kupe’. In 1769 James Cook came to New Zealand and extensively chartered both North and South Island and gave the Bay of Islands its present name. This tour takes you from the East Coast, Bay of islands to the West Coast, the mythical Hokianga Harbour – which has a fascinating history of both Maori and European. Hokianga-Nui-A-Kupe means “the place of Kupe’s great return”. Many iwi (Maori tribes) trace their ancestry back to the legendary Polynesian explorer Kupe who, with his crew, voyaged deep into the Southern Ocean to find New Zealand and Northland iwi claim the first landfall of Kupe’s waka was on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour. Our tour group met in Kerikeri on Sunday evening staying at the most wonderful lodge overlooking the Kerik-

eri Stone Store Basin. Not everyone was from the area, so most people were very keen for a walk around the basin which has the Stone Store and Kemp House that were established in 1819. The Kerikeri Mission Station one of the first places in New Zealand where Māori invited visitors to live amongst them. Day two was an early morning start. Cycling west from Kerikeri basically from one heritage site to another. I am not sure there are many places in NZ you could do this and was something the other cyclists in the group marvelled at throughout the tour. From the Stone Store Basin we cycled to Clendon House for a delicious picnic lunch in a beautiful garden. Later that day we joined the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail, one of the NZ Great Rides. We cycled 42km of the trail, though spectacular countryside, a tunnel, Lake Omapere, small villages, stunning views, meandering alongside the beautiful Utakura River, with little delights off to the side such as a huge lily pond, and ‘Snows museum’ full of all sorts of farming memorabilia! Then we hit the 1400m boardwalk through the mangroves to Horeke. A further 3km from Horeke is another incredible heritage site where several thousand Maori gathered for a hui and the largest signing of the Treaty, here at Mangungu Mission house. It was a surreal feeling knowing this and the view was spectacular. I could have sat there for hours taking in every nuance of the eastern edge of the Hokianga Harbour. Back to Horeke Hotel for a beautiful dinner of freshly cooked snapper. As we sat outside on the deck and you looked over the now quiet harbour it gave me time to reflect on what a bustling busy place this was – one of the busiest ports in NZ. It was NZ’s first commercial shipping yard dating back to the 1920’s. We were sitting in the first hotel in NZ, and there is a great story around NZ’s first murder trial which was held there. Next day we nipped 3km up to Wairere Boulder which is an incredible volcanic wonderland of boulders, native bush and stream. a lovely Scotsman who takes the time to talk about the area and serve us coffee and cake. The hiking options are endless here. You can do anything from a short walk, to a three hour look out walk. We did the one hour loop went for a refreshing dip in the swimming hole. This trip was turning out to be so much more than just a cycle tour, plenty of laughs getting to know each other along the trail and over our meals, with plenty of opportunities to walk and explore the history. I am ashamed to say that I have cycled the twin coast cycle trail several times and in the first day I learned more than I ever had on all my other joy rides Above: A bridge on the Pou Herenga Coast Cycle Trail. along the trail and as someone else in the group said, it really changes the way you feel about the area, and even being a New Zealander. This is where it all began…. where the two cultures met and forged a life together. As I said this is more than just a cycle ride. Next stop is the “Ranui”. This gorgeous boat transported us down the harbour with Craig our skipper telling tales of both the past and present. Visiting the villages of Kohukohu and Rawene was an unexpected treat. No-one really expected these quirky little towns to be on the edge of the harbour with art galleries, heritage trails and cafes. We had the chance to hop off and explore these on the bikes again… Our destination that night was the Copthorne Hokianga, a family run hotel which has the most breath-taking views of the sand dunes and the harbour. You can never tire of the view which is just as well, as you have it from the restaurant, bar and your rooms. By now we were all pretty good mates, so we met in the bar for a few drinks before settling down for a dinner full of local seafood and produce. I felt sad to leave the Hokianga Harbour after two nights up here. I felt at one with the place, could just imagine Kupe’s relief when he paddled across the bar at the mouth of the Hokianga Harbour. How hardy the explorers were back then. What an incredible feat to paddle in their waka across the ocean

Magical experiences on the Cook to Kupe tour to this safe haven. More delicious food at the buffet breakfast before hopping in our delightfully comfortable van and being transported back to Kaikohe to do the other half of the trail. I do love the planning here as Kaikohe is the highest point of the trail, so it is much more downhill than uphill to the coasts. Heading off to the east coast now, past the airport that the Americans built

in WWII, lovely scenery, suspension bridges, small rural towns. There is even a wee toilet sculpture at the end of someone’s backyard. Kawakawa is a town famous for many things – its public toilets designed by Fredrick Hundertwasser who loved the area and moved there, Kings Theatre Art Gallery – which is the largest in the north, the steam train that chugs through town and can take you and your bike 4km along the trail to Taumarere Station. From there you have the last 8 km into Opua riding along the estuary which is stunning. We cycled through Opua Marina to the car ferry for a 10 minute boat trip to Okiato – the first capital of NZ, and set off on the 8km cycle to Russell or Kororāreka. Back in the 1800’s this settlement was known as the Hell Hole of the Pacific – notorious for its drinking, fighting and prostitution! I like to call it Kororāreka which translates to “How sweet is the penguin” (kororā meaning blue penguin and reka meaning sweet). One of my fellow cyclists described Russell as “making her heart sing! Everything is perfect and its so picturesque Above top: View from the Copthorne Hotel Omapere of the Hokianga Harbour. Northland Experience

Magical experiences on the Cook to Kupe tour

and welcoming”. The Duke of Marlborough where we stayed is right on the water’s edge was the first licenced pub – back in 1827 it was “Johnny Johnstons Grog Shop” The owner Johnny Johnston was an exconvict come good, and became fluent in Te Reo and was very well regarded by the local Maori. This relationship led to Johnny being able to purchase the freehold site of the Duke, that was one of the first land sales to a European in New Zealand. A few from the group cycled over to the pristine waters of Long Beach for a dip, others took in the shops, while one couple went to Pompallier Mission Printery – which is wonderfully French and now has a great café to enjoy. Myself I got a cold beer and sat on the balcony of the Duke watching the world go by. I felt incredibly spoilt that night with dinner at the Duke and then going up the grand staircase to my wonderful bedroom. It really takes you back in time and I felt all of the tour group was feeling like this with this incredible trip which was off the beaten track but ending up in the evenings in places like this, full of gourmet food, wine and luxury. The next day was an early morning ride out to one of Northlands best kept secrets - Oke Bay at Rawhiti. The ride is on the road and also some of it on gravel. This was a really rewarding and scenic ride and I was pleased I made the early morning start. Later that day we all caught the passenger ferry to the bustling town of Paihia, with lots to do here – Waitangi

Mountain Bike park which has trails for all abilities, short rides, walks, cafes and shopping. But the best thing we did was all catch up for dinner again that night to rehash our trip and talk about the next one we would be taking. Most of us didn’t know each other before we started so I have to say it was five days well spend and now I had 10 new friends – because of course I include Steve our esteemed tour leader. I am not sure what I feel about this tour – is it the trip of sunsets, or the trip of firsts? I have never had the pleasure of such glorious sunsets and a region of firsts – the first pub, the first signing of the treaty, the first murder trial, the first capital in NZ. This was an incredible experience as we were so well looked after, stayed in such amazing locations, fantastic cycling and hiking and meeting really genuine people along the way. Either way I am hooked on the ‘tour’ option. I loved not carrying my gear and being able to really

enjoy the cycling. Northland Experiences also has two other tours – Cape to Cove which is purely hiking – you walk out to the iconic Cape Brett and stay the night which is an amazing experience, walk Urupukapuka Island which his full of birdsong, pristine waters and archaeological treasures, more walking in between until you get to Whangaroa Harbour and do the Lane Cove Walk – this is an incredible tour as a mix of rustic and luxury! There is also a third tour – Coast to Coast – which is a mixture of both tours! What you need to know; • Cook to Kupe Tour – 5 nights, 6 days • Cycling the Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail – with extensions on either end • All meals, accommodation, transfers, e-Bikes and tour leader included • Each day around 50km cycling a day • E-bikes make for a comfortable and enjoyable experience, and enable people of all abilities to experience this tour • You can cycle in Northland all year round and in the middle of winter it is great cycling as nice and mild • With these tours you can get off the beaten track, experience sights you can’t get to by car, and leave knowing that you have really ventured into the heart of Northland. • Maximum 10 people • Northland Experiences has an introductory special on until the end of August, reference Walking Magazine when booking www.northlandexperiences.co.nz

T

he Cape Kidnappers Track in Hawkes Bay is popular with walkers keen to view the gannets, especially between the months of November and late February each year. From Clifton, the Cape Kidnappers walking track begins along the beach for an easy eight kilometres before meandering to the cliffs on a well-maintained track from where to view the gannets. Though a beach walk, it means you Above letf: The startof the hill up to the gannets. Above right: Thousands of gannets at the nesting site.

can only visit at low tide, and it takes about five hours’ return to visit the colony. The beach walk is alongside cliffs that show fragmented fault and tilt lines, recording the gradual rise of New Zealand. Black Reef is the first gannet nesting site, 7.5 km from Clifton. A 1 km climb takes you from the shelter on the beach to a benched area on the hill where you can view the second colony, and spectacular views of Hawke’s Bay. The towering cliffs are made up of sandstone, conglomerate, mudstone, river gravel, pumice and silt, as well as glimpses of petrified wood and lignite.

New Zealand Walk

Fossilised shells can be seen in the sandstone near Black Reef. The Cape’s coast, cliffs and dunes provide habitats for native vegetation and wildlife. Birds here include the white-fronted tern/tara, variable oystercatcher/tōrea, reef heron/matuku waitai and Caspian tern/taranui. Little blue penguins/kororā nest around the Cape. The offshore reefs are rich in marine life, including the sandmason tube worm that constructs sand tubes on the rocks. The track sits within the footprint of Cape to City – a collaborative, landscape scale restoration project that is working to ensure our native species thrive where we live, work and play. This walk is along a beach and can only be attempted during low tide. Don’t get caught out by the tide. Check the tide timetable and leave yourself enough time to return safely. Departing from Clifton to the Cape: leave at least three hours after high tide and returning from the Cape to Clifton: leave the cape no later than one hour 30 minutes after low tide. Occasionally, high tides and big seas block access along the beach. The cliffs along the beach are unstable and slips can occur. Do not attempt to climb these, and rest or picnic away from the cliffs. The walk is possible all year, but visit between early November and late Febru-

ary to see the gannets. History and culture History tells the story of Te Kauwae-aMāui, the tip of the fishing hook of Māui. In ancient times Māui took the jawbone of his grandmother Muri-ranga-whenua to use as a fish hook and pulled up the North Island/Te-Ika-a-Māui (the fish of Māui). The sacred jawbone forms what is now known as Hawke’s Bay. After an incident between local Māori and Captain James Cook’s crew on the Endeavour in 1769, it became known as Cape Kidnappers. Try to visit between early November and late Feburary. Nesting occurs between mid-September and midDecember. The first chicks hatch around the beginning of November and the last chicks migrate to Australia in May.

Fact File

Getting there: The track starts at Clifton, 21 km south of Napier and 18 km east of Hastings. Local tourism operators can provide transport to/from the gannet colony if you don’t want to walk there along the beach. The walk is 19km return via the same track and the five hour return walk is classed as easy. Ensure you take with you: plenty of drinking water, a water/windproof jacket, a hat and gloves, sunscreen and wear warm, layered clothing and study footwear such as tramping boots. A communication device could come in handy. Watch out for rock falls. There are toilets at the amenity area at the gannet colony. No dogs are allowed on walk.

Christchurch Marathon will start and finish there on Sunday 2nd June. This is also a continuation of the Marathon’s own rebuild. In 2011 the earthquakes forced the event to the outskirts of Christchurch, first to Lincoln and then to Christchurch Airport. In 2015 the organisers brought the event back into the central city course, basing it at Cathedral Square. In 2017 ASB Bank came on board as the principal sponsor, and the 2019 return to the Christchurch Town Hall is the latest development. “It’s been a tough eight years, says Race Director, Chris Cox. “The event has spent all that time in expensive and temporary marquee venues, and in that time the costs associated with traffic management more than doubled. We’ve had great support from participants and sponsors, but organisationally it really did feel like the event couldn’t catch a break.” “We’re really excited to see one of Christchurch’s longest-running anAbove: The massive crowd of entrants in the last Christchurch Marathon event. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

nual sports events, the ASB Christchurch marathon, return to its home in the city centre,” says ASB head of community and sponsorship Mark Graham. This latest development has been made possible thanks to the support of Vbase, who manage many of Christchurch’s premier event venues, including the Christchurch Town Hall. Race day will start and finish outside the iconic Kilmore Street site, while the expo and prize giving will be held in the venue’s famous Auditorium. “The Christchurch Town Hall is a really special venue, not only to us but to the entire community,” says Chris Wallace, Vbase Acting General Manager, Events Services. “It’s great to be able to play our part in helping the ASB Christchurch Marathon return to this venue and its rightful place in the heart of the city.” Established in 1981 and renowned as the South Island’s premier marathon event, 2019’s 39th ASB Christchurch Marathon has almost come full circle back to the same route as it was held on prior to 2011. From the Christchurch Town Hall it takes in a scenic tour of famous landmarks such as Hagley Park, Christchurch Casino and the Avon River. The format for race day is also the same, featuring the classic 42.2k marathon distance, the 21.1k half marathon, as well as the 10k and the Kids’ Mara’Fun. In 2010, prior to the earthquakes, a record 5800 participants from 18 countries turned out and Cox is hoping to see the same sort of support in 2019. “From 2011 to 2015 we were treading water, just keeping our head up. Since 2015 we’ve been gradually re-claiming our magic route. Parts of the course still take in rough roads in the red zone, but there’s nothing we can do about that right now. Bringing the event back to the Christchurch Town Hall, however, was something we could do.” “We’re definitely going to see a boost. We have more than 500 entries already, which is about 25 percent ahead of the same point last year. Everyone is as excited as us about the Christchurch Town Hall being open again, and what’s great for Christchurch has always been great for the Christchurch Marathon.” Race day for the 2019 ASB Christchurch Marathon is Sunday 2nd June. Entries are open now at www.christchurchmarathon.co.nz www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
