New two Te Araroa offroad sections

A new Tekapo-Twizel route across a block of Public Conservation Land will remove 10km of road walking the Te Araroa Trail and replace it with 11km using an old farm track and some cross-country travel. This new section offers fantastic views out to Aoraki and Lake Pukaki while walking through unique glacial landscapes and retired high-country farmland

For this coming season, Te Araroa Trail have formalised a route across private land that some were already using (at the invitation of the farmers) to avoid SH2 Serpell-Dobson Road in the Waikatoi and get down to the Mangatāwhiri stopbank.

This is a win for walker safety as it removes 4km of some of the most dangerous road walking on Te Araroa. Many thanks to Te Araroa Waikato Trust for putting this together.

Kaimai track and hut closures

Mount Hart Lodge new Kimberley wilderness experiences

An authentic outback Kimberley wilderness experience awaits at Mount Hart Lodge, located off the iconic Gibb River Road in the Wunaamin Conservation Park.

Originally a cattle station, this historically rich and rustic accommodation offers an ideal base to explore the wonders of the Kimberley.

New for the 2023 season, the accommodation offering now includes luxury bell tents with single and queen beds – adding to the existing safari tents, campgrounds and homestead accommodation.

Mount Hart Lodge Helicopter Tours are now also available, taking guests over the regions’ waterfall wonders – including a scenic flight over the magnificent Horizontal Falls (Garaanngaddim).

Changes on Te Araroa website

If you’re walking Te Araroa this upcoming season, please don’t forget to register. Understanding who is on the trail and when, helps them do our job better and supports their bid to add and upgrade huts and other trail infrastructure.

As part of their website upgrade, they’re improving the registration process. Once registered, you will receive an information pack and Te Araroa merchandise so you can identify and connect with other through-walkers on the trail. In the interim, until the new process is launched in September, we ask that all walkers continue to use the current registration process.

A central section of tracks in the Kaimai Ranges are closed at least until the end of September because routine soil sampling has identified kauri dieback on the Wharawhara Track, near Katikati. Two positive samples were found near the wash station at the start of the track, and another one further along the track. In those locations there are no kauri trees.

DOC is now conducting extensive soil testing on all nearby tracks - each test takes about 3 weeks of lab testing before a result is obtained.

Detailed information is available on the DOC website. These closures mean Te Rereatukahia Hut is not accessible, and Motutapere Hut cannot be accessed via the North South Track.

DOC ask to please respect these closures and they hope for a better outcome over the next few months.

Hakarimata Scenic Reservesummit walks, waterfalls, big kauri

Leg-burning workouts and sedate tree-hugging adventures are just 15 minutes north of Hamilton, writes Ceana Priest.

Beneath the bush-clad spine of the Hakarimata Range, a lung-busting stairway attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually. Sheltered by towering rimu and rata, folks ascend the infamous Hakarimata Steps, bolstered by motivation signs along the nearly 1,400 steps.

But bagging the summit isn’t the only way to experience this reserve on the western fringes of the Waikato Basin. Multiple entry points in the north, south and middle provide access to more sedate adventures where two-wheels are welcome, cuddling a kauri is allowed and spotting glowworms a bonus.

Within the 2,000-hectare reserve, ancient peripatus/velvet worms and more than 120 species of land snail coexist alongside one of the nation’s southernmost kauri trees. For bird twitchers, the nationally threatened kārearea/ native falcon and pīpīwharauroa/shining cuckoo can occasionally be spotted. See what you can find on these five adventures

Kauri Loop Track | Parker Road

Get up close to a huggable 1,000-year-old kauri at the range’s northernmost end, and if energy allows, hike up to the scenic lookout for panoramic views of North Waikato.

From the car park, the trail climbs steadily for 20 minutes, where most of the hurty stairs are concentrated. Turn right at the fork for the Kauri Grove and the 30-metre-high cuddly attraction. From here, return the way you came, or for eager explorers, continue to the lookout by climbing more flights of stairs.

Information: Walking only. Allow 45 minutes return to Kauri Grove. Or, 90 minutes (3km) for the full loop. Parking at the end of Parker Road, off Hakarimata Road, 11 km north of Ngāruawāhia. Toilet near the car park. No dogs.

Have a smile!

There is no wifi in the morning forest, but you will find a better connection. Unknown

Hakarimata Rail Trail & Cascade Waterfall | Waingaro Road

This sun-dappled swimming hole at the base of a small cascading waterfall is a crowd pleaser. In summer, there’s a pebble beach and shallow stream to dip toes in, while keener folk can clamber over the rocks and plunge into the chilly swimming hole.

The flat grassy path follows the route of the former Ngāruawāhia/ Glen Massey railway at the southern end of the range and is ideal for bikers graduating from concrete paths to an easy trail. If you arrive on two wheels, you’ll need to use the bike racks at the trail junction before strolling the final 200 metres to the waterfall.

Location: Suitable for walking, buggies and bikes (Grade 1, easiest). Allow 60 to 90 min return. Parking about 3 km south of Ngāruawāhia on Waingaro Road. Toilet at the trail junction. No dogs.

Hakarimata Steps | Brownlee Avenue

This gut-busting stairway is a popular spot with fitness fanatics who enjoy brutal climbs and postworkout wobbly legs. Start your adventure by following the wellgraded track beside the Mangarata Stream to the base of the stairs.

If you are not daunted by the 1,349 steps ahead of you, you’ll be bolstered by cheerful encouragement from those on their way down. At the summit, there’s a bird’s-eye-view from the 374-metres-above-sea-level tower of the Waikato countryside.

Location: Walking only. Allow 120 minutes return. Parking on Brownlee Avenue, Ngāruawāhia. Toilets at the car park. No dogs.

Waterworks Track | Brownlee Avenue

This historic 750,000-litre reservoir at the base of the reserve is a fun spot to poke around and doesn’t involve severe elevation like the Hakarimata Steps.

From Brownlee Avenue, follow the Mangarata Stream and continue straight ahead when the trail splits to the steps. After the small spillway, there is a gravel patch where you can have a picnic and enjoy the serenity of the forest but bring insect repellent as there are some active biters. The reservoir was built in 1922 and once supplied water to Ngāruawāhia.

Location: Walking only. Allow 60 minutes (2km) return. Parking on Brownlee Avenue, Ngāruawāhia. Toilet at the car park. No dogs.

Hakarimata Glowworms | Brownlee Avenue

Follow the shallow Mangarata Stream to the small waterfall spilling over the Waterworks Dam where damp forest banks are teeming with iridescent glowworms after sunset. The critters lure insects to their sticky, silky strands for nine months by emitting an enticing blue-green glow before becoming a pupa and then a short-lived fly. This adven -

ture is only 10 minutes from the car park, so it’s perfect for an afterdinner exploration. On your return, look for eels slithering downstream to begin migrating 100 kilometres to Port Waikato.

Location: Only suitable for walking. Parking is available on Brownlee Avenue, Ngāruawāhia. Toilet at the car park. No dogs.

Birdlings Flat a walk with sea to mountain views

Birdlings Flat is about 45 km from Christchurch before Little River on the main road to Akaroa. It is a small settlement with a stoney beach where many people collect coloured stones and gems

and of course go fishing. It is not a swimming beach as there are very strong ocean currents.

We had a good frost in the morning and headed out to Birdlings Flat to begin our walk. It was a sunny day

and the sky was blue. First we had to walk along the 4WD track in the shingle which was a very good way to warm up as it was a little hard to walk on but it was not for long.

We headed up the farm track (4WD) after meeting the resident one eared guard sheep who was very friendly and loved his or her photo taken.

As we started up hill at the beginning there was a slip which had been cleared and was due to all the heavy rain. We continued walking to the water tank and then a little beyond for our morning tea spot. The views

around were spectacular as usual.

Lake Forsyth was rather muddy due to all the rain and the sea was nice and blue as well as the sky and the sun was shining with very little wind which made for easy walking conditions.

The view of the houses at Birdlings Flat showed you how small the place really is. The Southern Alps

were covered in snow. We had the sea, the mountains and the hills.

We had planned to walk up and along for a couple of hours and then have our lunch at a nice spot on the way. You can walk all day as the 4WD farm track continues to Magnet Bay, Okuti Valley and Little River and beyond.

We came across a few vehicles on the track and there was plenty of room for us all. It was very nice to stop and take photos and see Kaitorete Spit which seemed to go on and on into the distance (25km).

We found a lovely spot for lunch with the flax bushes and a great view out to sea, then it was time to head back to the beach. It was a lovely walk with different views other than the bush and we soon came back to shingle 4WD road which we crossed to the carpark.

A great day had by all.

Making Christchurch’s Marathon more inclusive

The 2024 Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon is scheduled for April 21st, and organisers are moving to capitalise on 2023’s successful revamp with a bold goal of 5000 starters.

In 2023 the Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon kicked covid cancellations to the curb with a new sponsor, a new venue, a new course and almost 4000 participants. In 2024 it looks to become more inclusive with an eye to topping 5000 starters for the first time since 2015.

Based now within Hagley Park, the event revolves around a 10k lap around the CBD that highlights iconic landmarks such as Canterbury Museum, Cambridge Terrace and Oxford Terrace added to the popular Hagley Park and Avon River

sections.

Christchurch Frontrunner owner, Oska Inkster-Baynes, has been a supporter of the event long before he became a sponsor and played a big part in the course re-design. “It’s always been a great event,” says the four-time winner. “But last years big changes really re-invigorated the atmosphere and experience. Customers are still talking about what a great day they had. So, the Frontrunner is looking forward to being a big part of the Christchurch Marathon future.”

Christchurch Marathon organiser, Chris Cox, thinks that future is all about inclusivity. “We’ve had so much positive feedback about how scenic and spectator friendly it was that we know we’re on the right track,” says Cox. “We now have an event that is sustainable, but above

all else, that people want to run. So, the goal now is 5000 entries, and to do that we’re focused on making the event more inclusive and accessible so that more people might be inspired to get involved.”

In 2024 Cox and his crew are making the event more inclusive with fun new categories for best costume and the biggest school teams and corporate teams. But at the same time, they’ll be making the event more accessible with new entry fee and refund structures.

“We’re trying to create a festival of fitness for anyone and everyone,” explains Cox. “But with the current cost of living crisis the event needs to remain accessible too. So, this year we’ve established discounted fees for early entry and a refund insurance plan.

Continuing with the inclusivity theme, this year’s Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon will benefit Christchurch’s own Ranui House. Based opposite Christchurch Hospital, Ranui House provides accommodation for families from away who have loved ones in hospital care. Participants in the 2024 Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon are encouraged to make their run mean more by signing up to fund raise for Ranui House.

Scheduled for Sunday 21st April, options include the classic 42.2k marathon, a half marathon, a quarter marathon and the Kids’ Mara’Fun.

Walking the wonderful Waikato

The Waikato (”flowing water”) River wends its winding way for 425km from Lake Taupo to the Tasman Sea, giving its name to the region that it traverses. The Waikato is the fourth largest region in the country in area and population.

It has a land area of 23,900 km2 and a population of 513,800 (June 2022), with a population density of 21 people per km 2. Its largest city is Hamilton (180,000). The Waikato has very high sunshine hours by world standards, averaging 2200 hours per year. This results in rapid growth of grass, crops and ornamental plants.

To the west, the region is bounded by the Tasman Sea. The coastal region is largely rough hill country, punctured by three large natural harbours: Raglan Harbour , Aotea Harbour , and Kawhia Harbour The area around Raglan is noted for its volcanic black sand beaches and fine surfing conditions.

To the east of the coastal hills lies the broad alluvial plain of the

Waikato River. The land is largely pastoral farmland created by European settlers draining the extensive natural swamps. It is here that most of the region’s population resides, and the land is intensively farmed, mainly dairy cattle but with sheep on the hillier margins, and crops such as maize . The area around Cambridge has many thoroughbred stables.

The north of the region around Te Kauwhata produces some of New Zealand’s best wines . Dozens of small shallow lakes lie in this area, the largest of which is Lake Waikare

On its eastern flank, the land rises towards the forested slopes of the Kaimai and Mamaku Ranges

On first glance this region seems to offer little to enthusiastic perambulators, but a closer look reveals a wealth of walks to enjoy. From winding mountain tracks through ancient bush-clad landscapes and wildlife reserves, to casual strolls along the river and fertile rolling hills, the Waikato region offers an array of excellent walking and hiking trails to suit all levels.

There is everything from gentle jaunts on well laid out tracks to more ambitious hikes including overnight hut stays – and it’s all easily accessible. New Zealand’s national walkway, Te Araroa (“Long Pathway”), passes through the region, taking in a historic walk at Mercer, farmland from Waitomo to Te Kuiti and a traverse of Mt. Pirongia.

Here are some of my favourite walking trails:

1. Hakarimata Summit Track

Within a stone’s throw of Ngaru-

awahia, this walk climbs to 374m. It includes the infamous staircase, a popular challenge with both locals and visitors alike.

2. Wairere Falls, Matamata

Just 10 minutes’ drive from Matamata, Wairere is the highest waterfall in the North Island, plunging some 153m down a sheer rock face on the

side of the Kaimai Range.

3. Te Waihou (Blue Spring)

Near Putaruru you can walk to the crystal-clear Blue Spring, a gobsmacking aquifer which supplies around 70 per cent of New Zealand’s bottled water.

4. Sanctuary Mountain, Maungatautari

Above right: Dingies on the foreshore at Kawhia Harbour.

Below left: Castle cliffs at Tawarau.

Below right: Waihou Stream on the Te Waihou Walkway.

Maungatautari (796m) is the largest ecological ‘island’ on mainland New Zealand, featuring one of the longest predator-proof fences in the world (47km).

5. Mt. Te Aroha

From the summit (952m) there are 360 degree views across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. Mt. Ruapehu, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Taranaki are all visible on a clear day.

6. Tawarau Gorge

Towering 70m bluffs and turrets, laced with clinging plants and sometimes crowned with trees, adorn this

stunning cleft near Waitomo. Nearby Marokopa Falls are worth a look too.

7. Ruakuri Reserve Walk, Waitomo

Based in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, a place of strong cultural significance to Māori, this walk includes limestone outcrops, native forest and small caves to be explored.

8. Bell Track, Mt. Pirongia

This track follows Blue Bull Stream to a swingbridge, where you continue upstream for 10 minutes to the tallest recorded native tree in New Zealand - a 66.5m kahikatea.

A journey of natural discovery and connection at this year’s Waiheke Walking Festival

Embrace your adventurous spirit and appreciate nature up close and personal at this year’s Waiheke Walking Festival from October 26th to November 5th.

This beloved annual event with the tagline ‘ the world’s friendliest walking festival’ aims to not just talk the talk, but also walk the walk, offering an array of fabulous walks that showcase the stunning beauty of Waiheke Island while giving festival-goers opportunities to connect and explore.

The Te Matuku Private Land Walk is a wonderful hike through private land, along wetlands, across coastal farmland and down through the pristine bush of the Awaawaroa - Te Matuku Walkway, with the kind permission of, and guided by, wonderful landowner Lady Jennie Fenwick.

The first week also holds a new Festival double whammy Make Tracks - Breaking New Ground Walk. A brand-new walk for 2023, for those who like to explore uncharted territory! With kind permission of Man O’ War Vineyard, we are excited to offer a hike across land at the far eastern end of Waiheke Island. For those who like something a bit different and a bit

rugged, this is land that has never been walked over.

For the people who just love walking, and a Festival first is the Big Walk Friday’s. Matiatia to Palm Beach will tackle one of the best 12km sections of the 100km Te Ara Hura Track. Enjoy views forever, as the track climbs the rocky headlands and descends to sandy beaches on a mix of fabulous tracks and quiet roads. Stopping on private land for a BYO picnic break and some generously offered treats.

There’s also the amazing Postage Stamp - Grain to Grace Walk. This very special walk will have you starting at Onetangi beach and ventures up into the valley of vineyards. This is a rare chance to cross the valley, through Obsidian winery and the heart of Waiheke grape growing heaven, and with a bit of fence jumping, explore the land around the Chapel, and onto one of Waiheke’s newest wine tasting experiences, Postage Stamp Wines.

During the week is an opportunity to walk one of our favourite parts of the 100km Te Ara Hura track, with a special addition. The Scarecrow Palm Beach to Oneroa Walk begins at one of the Island’s best beaches ...if you miss this one, a day later the Allbirds Fabulous Northern Reserves walk will take you through some of the same quiet roads, tracks, beaches and include some stunning regenerative reserves.

You’ll have noticed some of these walks have a company or name associated with them. These denote our wonderful Named Walk Sponsors which help fund the festival and keep many of the walks free of charge, though some have a small fee or cover associated costs such as food, wine and transport.

Last but certainly not least is the 3-day Walking Holiday with a group of 12 fellow walkers, staying at the lovely and relaxed Kiwi House in Oneroa, and enjoy daily walks with your group, plus join Festival walks each day that are specially selected for you, for three funfilled, active days.

The full programme will be released on our website from 1 Sept 2023.

Consider becoming a ‘Friend’ for $115. ‘Friends’ can reserve up to 10 walks, instead of the standard six, and secure their spots two weeks ahead of the public.

the scenery at your own pace.

The trail features a charming bridge that allow you to get closer to the water and provide unique vantage points for observing the lagoon and its inhabitants .

Overall, the Hokowhitu Centennial Lagoon Walk is a leisurely and scenic stroll that takes about 30 to 45 minutes and offers a refreshing escape into nature without being too strenuous on a limestone, gravel and grass track. It’s a great place to enjoy a peaceful walk, observe birds, have a picnic, or simply unwind in a serene environment.

After the walk why not cross the bridge over to one of Palmy’s historical landmarks, Caccia Birch House. If you’re there when there isn’t a function on, it’s a beautiful property to stroll around and snap a shot for Instagram. This historic homestead was built in 1895 and is nestled in two hectares of gardens overlooking the Lagoon.

There is car parking at The Chalet,

toilets, and access points at Centennial Drive and Caccia Birch Lane. About one kilometre from the Lagoon there are several cafes at the Hokowhitu Village in Albert Street, or another one in Fitzherbert Avenue near the Esplanade.

Otago Central Rail Traila walk on a mid winter’s day

The Otago Central Rail Trail is a 150 km trail that follows the old Central Otago branch railway from Middlemarch to Clyde. In 1990 the railway from Middlemarch

to Clyde was closed and the rails and sleepers removed. In 2000 the old railway was opened up as the Otago Central Rail Trail. It can be cycled taking three to four days, or walked which would take six to seven days.

While visiting Central Otago in early July, I grabbed the opportunity to walk the section from Clyde to Alexandra. I have previously cycled the whole trail five times but today I wanted to experience it from a different perspective.

The trail head officially starts at the intersection of SH8 and Springvale Road, Clyde, where I started the 8 km walk to Alexandra. The trail initially follows alongside the main highway on the right and then runs through a flat semi rural landscape of picturesque lifestyle blocks, orchards and vineyards.

A short distance along the trail I came to the most notable feature of this section, the Muttontown Viaduct, constructed in 1907, which crosses the usually dry Muttontown Gully. This wooden trestle viaduct, one of only two on the Rail Trail without stone abutments, is 109 metres long and nine metres high. It is significant in that it was one of the first sites in NZ where sheep were slaughtered and the meat sold. Hungry goldminers were the first customers.

After a while, the trail follows

Middle left: An inquisitive horse.

Below: At the end of the section.

My Favourite Walk

alongside Dunstan Road on the left and I soon passed Immigrant’s Vineyard on my right. They create award winning Ruru wines on their 19 hectare vineyard. Beyond are the snow capped mountains of the Old Man Range. Ahead is the baked brown rocky landscape above Alexandra, Knobby Range, and the Alexandra Clock on the Hill comes into view.

On the outskirts of Alexandra, the beautifully manicured Alexandra Golf Course runs parallel to the trail. I passed by a pine plantation, a new housing subdivision being built, and an industrial area with a cafe (Industry Lane Eatery) right beside the trail. Although I was tempted to stop here for a coffee fix, I had a prearranged pick up to meet at the end of this section in Alexandra. Here the trail continues across the road (SH85) onto the next section of the Rail Trail, Alexandra to Chatto Creek.

I was lucky to have a sunny day but there was a cold fresh wind. I was continually surrounded by wonderful views. Two cyclists passed me along the way and there were a few dog walkers on the Alexandra end of the trail.

Time taken to walk this section was one hour 40 minutes.

Federation Walk through a regenerating rainforest

The Spit Oceanway or Federation Walk is a short walk in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, from Seaworld to an entrance to the Gold Coast Seaway.

This is an easy 3km walk, (6km if you go to the end and back) along a well made path through the sand

dunes of The Spit. It’s perhaps the closest walk to Surfers Paradise and provides a unique insight into the coastal dune network.

The walk starts at the beach carpark on the opposite side of the road from the entrance to Sea World. You’ll need to go around the round-

about to get to the carpark.

A fig tree in the car park marks the start of Federation Walk, which winds its way through patches of littoral rainforest undergoing regeneration. Regular community planting days are helping the rejuvenation along.

It’s basically a 3km stretch of sand dunes, beach and sheoak trees and the path is made of compacted gravel, so it’s easy to walk on. There are a couple of small inclines, but nothing too dramatic.

Leaving the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve you’ll pass underneath the sand bypass jetty.

The sand bypassing system was

Australian Walk

opened in May 1986 to take shifting sands from the entrance of the Nerang River to keep the entrance open for boaties, fishermen and industries in general between Gold Coast waterways and the Pacific Ocean.

The bypass system collects sand through ten jet pumps suspended from the jetty at 30 metre intervals, 11 metres below mean sea level.

The sand is then pumped underneath the seawall entrance to discharge onto the southern ocean beach on South Stradbroke Island.

You can then head along the pathway to the southern training wall of the Gold Coast Seaway. A walk out to the very tip of the wall takes you to the end of the Gold Coast Oceanway.

On a clear day, you can get an excellent view south down the beach along the entire stretch of the Gold Coast right down to Coolangatta. You can then turn around and walk 3km back, or have someone pick you up at the end.

Take plenty of water on a hot day because there are only amenities at the start and finish of the walk and parts of the track have no shade.

The Federation Walk is a community project launched to celebrate the Centenary of Australia’s Federation in 2001.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Main Beach Progress Association and the Friends of Federation Walk, a stroll through this beautiful natural section of The Spit is more enjoyable

and accessible.

The Friends of Federation Walk is a community group that is working towards better management of the last remaining substantial dune system on the Gold Coast mainland. A partnership approach has been developed between Gold Coast City Council, Gecko, local business and the general community to ensure that this area remains as one of the most beautiful sections of the Gold Coast.

Mt Bruce Track Loop walk

The Mt Bruce Track is situated within the Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre, a conservation area located in the Wairarapa.

One of the highlights of walking the Mt Bruce Track is the chance to encounter native New Zealand wildlife.

Allow around two hours return for this 4km walk. The area is home to various bird species, including the iconic kiwi, as well as kaka, takahe, and kokako. The Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre is actively involved in conservation efforts for these species, and they often have educational exhibits and information along the track.

Once you pass the Loop Track sign, you officially enter wild New Zealand bush. The track is no longer accessible by wheelchairs, pushchairs or mobility scooters.

The difficulty of this walk is low to medium depending on your fitness ability (children can do it without too much difficulty).

The walk will ascend – at times quite steeply – up to the hill until you reach an amazing lookout point over the whole area. It will also descend just as steeply until you return to the Pūkaha aviaries.

There is very little mobile phone coverage there, so bear that in mind.

As you hike along the track, you may have opportunities to enjoy scenic viewpoints that overlook the surrounding landscape, including the Tararua Ranges and the Wairarapa Valley. These viewpoints provide excellent photo opportunities and

Heritage, coastal, all in Wairarapa

a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the region.

Since the Mt Bruce Track is located within the Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre, there are usually facilities available for visitors, including parking, restrooms, and a visitor centre with information about the local flora and fauna.

The Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre is committed to preserving New Zealand’s native ecosystems and species. Your visit to the track contributes to these conservation efforts, as the entry fees often go towards supporting the center’s initiatives.

Before planning your visit, it’s a good idea to:

Check the current track conditions and any alerts from the Department of Conservation.

Confirm the opening hours and entrance fees for the Mt. Bruce Wildlife Centre.

Prepare suitable clothing, footwear, and water for your walk.

New Zealand is a place that intrigues visitors from all over the world who come here searching for their very own slice of “Lord of the Rings” paradise. There is a lot more to New Zealand than Middle Earth, however. This is the land that time forgot, where creatures evolved as they did nowhere else on Earth and where birds reigned supreme. Pūkaha’s 942-hectares of restored forest is home to wild native birds of all shapes and sizes, and the Loop Track takes you deep into their world. It’s time to go wild …

Registration is essential to secure your place. All walks will have a knowledgeable leader and a firstaider.

Tracey Higgins, Co-convenor of the 2023 Festival says “Walking benefits mind and body for all ages and abilities. Walking encourages connections with people and places.”

Ceia Wade-Brown, Co-convenor and Founder, says “Wairarapa offers a host of wonderful walking experiences – from the majestic Tararua Ranges to rural towns and the wild coast.”

The 2023 programme repeats the popular Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae hīkoi that visits local reserves and an urupā, the delicious Go Carterton Wine and Olives tour, and urban heritage walks in Masterton, Featherston and Carterton.

New special interest walks include a Rainbow Walk, honouring the late Carterton Mayor, Georgina Beyer MNZM, the world’s first openly transgender Mayor and MP. and a free bus trip to Castlepoint for new migrants, with a gentle walk to the spectacular lighthouse.

The ten-day Wairarapa Walking Festival includes some slightly tougher tramping trips. Tararua Tramping Club leads us to the famous Putangirua Pinnacles, the Paths of the Dead in the Lord of the Rings film, Return of the King. Geomorphologist, Professor Crozier, will explain how the pinnacles were formed. South Wairarapa Tramping

Club leads a steep tramp into the Tararua Forest Park for views of the main peaks, and Masterton Tramping Club leads a walk up Pūkaha/Mt Bruce at the national wildlife centre.

The full Wairarapa-wide programme was launched on 2 September. There are eight charter buses, and some walks meet the train from Wellington. We encourage locals and visitors alike to learn, explore and connect! Come and stay for a few days in the Wairarapa and walk new journeys.

Makara Walkway for fabulous sea views

Makara Walkway is a 6.6 kilometre loop that begins and ends at Makara Beach. A half hour drive from Wellington city, this popular three to four hour

walk offers fabulous views and good swimming at beaches sheltered in a southerly. This is a popular trail for hiking and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter

times of day. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of two hours six minute to complete. It is classed as an advanced tramping track.

This is one of three tracks in the Meridian West Wind Recreation Area.

The walk starts by following a rough track from Makara Beach up past an ancient Ngāti Ira pā site to the Fort Opau gun emplacements, and experience views from Kapiti Island all the way to the South Island.

The Walkway then descends along short sections of rough road to Opau Bay. Return to Makara Settlement north along the rocky coastline.

The hills are often shrouded in cloud or fog and the winds can be gale force, so check the weather before you go. Sturdy footwear and wind-proof clothing is essential, and you must stay on the tracks at all times. Cellphone coverage is limited and there’s nowhere to fill a bottle, so take water

This loop walk climbs to vantage points with spectacular views – farmland, a beach and gun emplacements will keep kids interested.

Part of track closed for lambing season between 1 August and 30 September. Access to the gun emplacements is via Mākara Beach during this time.
