Mixing your styles
by C. MARIE HEBSON
Mixing style genres isn’t easy - but when done right, your home feels more custom and personalized to your tastes. I learned the different style genres from Ethan Allen out of New York, NY. Basically any furniture frame, colour, fabric or picture can be tweaked to fit within your style genre by knowing the rules and when you can break them. Below are four different kitchens I’ve designed over the years where I’ve combined two different styles. Its always important to add those whimsical touches in statues, cool light fixtures or art.

THE LOOK: CONTEMPORARY MINIMALIST
Here we paired a more traditional palette in walnut, copper, chrome and navy blue. The affect was truly lovely, warm and inviting. Texture is critical in creating that warm inviting vibe.
THE LOOK: MEDITERRANEAN MODERN
I selected more traditional casegoods, paired with more modern upholstered furnishings. The fit and finishes were all pulled from this gorgeous Alga Green Quartzite Countertop. This was one of the first lottery show homes to showcase a mix of cabinetry in all white for the kitchen, stained wood for the bathrooms. Designed in 2010 this home is still a show stopper.
THE LOOK: EAST COAST COTTAGE -
Mixing west coast aesthetics with east coast cottage isn’t easy - but we achieved that here by ensuring that the black painted cabinetry was light and bright through the use of unique light fixtures and bright wallpaper and artwork. This is such a fun vibrant home, the bright pops of colour are a sure winner to Alberta’s long cold winters.
THE LOOK: MODERN FARMHOUSE WITH A BOHO VIBE
Softening the whites to a soft off-white, paired with rich natural wired brushed oak and recycled black glass backsplash, this kitchen was such a hit with both young and old alike. It is timeless. The Boho came in with faux fur furnishings and unique light fixtures
