dEssErt shops in downtown Calgary
Cody Battershill
New dessert shops are taking Calgary by storm with unique offerings for great prices. I want to share a few of the best places I’ve tried recently to fill your sweet tooth in the downtown area.
Sugar MarMalade
• 1120 Centre Street N • 587-354-1120 • sugarmarmalade.com Established in 2010, Sugar Marmalade is a renowned Hong Kong-style snack and dessert shop chain originating in eastern Canada. Calgary’s first location – just north of downtown on Centre Street – is easy to reach via public transportation and features an open-concept layout with a mix of comfortable table/ booth/patio seats.
Sugar Marmalade’s extensive menu includes everything from HK-style bubble waffles and shaved ice desserts to sweet konnyaku noodles and glutinous rice bowls. The menu is so extensive here, it may even take you a little while to sift through all the options!
Sweet tooth Ice creaM
• 206 Centre Street S • 587-832-0128 • sticyyc.com Sweet Tooth Ice Cream is another wildly popular dessert house in Calgary amongst those with a knack for delicious ice cream. Located in Chinatown on Centre Street, a walk to Sweet Tooth while visiting the Bow River in downtown takes just a few minutes and is the perfect place to get refreshed on a hot summer day while hanging out with family/friends.
Specializing in gourmet artisan rolled ice cream, Sweet Tooth hand crafts its flavours in store to deliver an authentic and unique taste for customers. Make your own creation with the ingredients you choose or pick one of the featured flavours that are hard to look past. Vegan and gluten-free options are available on request as well, making this ice cream shop as all-inclusive as it gets!
Snowcapz café
• 216 14th Avenue SE • 587-956-7759 • snowcapzcafeyyc.com The list of unique dessert shops in the city centre doesn’t stop there. Snowcapz Café is another, focussing on Korean-style shaved ice desserts, drinks and baked goods. Found on 14th Avenue SE in the Beltline, Snowcapz Café is the perfect place to stop by while out and about on the Red Mile or coming to/from the Stampede Grounds.
Try one of their traditional Korean shaved ice cream desserts, housemade croffles (mix between a croissant and waffle) or fruitbased/Korean-style beverages. With prices starting at just $5 an item, you can’t go wrong with stopping in for an authentic Korean dessert when craving something sweet!
