I believe that paper, pencil, and drawings are the tools that could change the world. Architecture is a significant way to improve the living environment and build the future for society. I believed that there is a delicate relationship between architecture and people. The flow of people could change the building, but with the passage of time, the building will change its habits as well.

The year’s work will be located in the Belfast, Northen Ireland. Arguably the most mediated city in the UK, Belfast has a huge media presence in terms of film, photography, media coverage, trans-Atlantic politics, Brexit, and the forthcoming hard border with the south, sectarianism and division, and potential union with Ireland. The city is a product of colonial rule which can be witnessed in the imposition of traffic infrastructures, politicised housing programmes, and divisive public policies. Belfast is a site of postindustrial ruin and poverty, colour coded along sectarian lines. In the first semester, we were working remotely and researching into the ‘Mediated City of Belfast’ through the medium of film proposing film and film-making as a site for spatial and material experimentation and new narratives. Taking the favourite sequence from the film-scape and extract it from the medium of film, draw it, scale it and situate it within a domestic, internal environment – a room, open or closed. Also, it is important to explore the implied materiality and structures of the film-scape through composite spatial drawings and develop the narratives of a room. By the end of the first semester, we have developed sufficient skills and understandings of the city to have identified an interest, a narrative, a material interest and a site for the thesis projects.

PENETRATION OF ALLEY Belfast is a divided city, community isolation, division, also religious conflict is some of the important things continuously affecting the city. Especially, “The trouble” period (1971) - the path of sorrow, creates some exclusionary residential territories. Some of the alleyway (hidden network) in the community where the IRA (Catholic) occupied as the escape routes and for avoiding surveillance from the enemy (Protestantism). The alleyway becomes the visible distance /barrier between people and the community. Nowadays, some people utilize alley characteristics (darkness) for antisocial behaviors. Belfast government announce a policy called “Alley Gating”. Even though the alley gate improved the crime issue but it reinforces further city/community segregation. The project vision aims at breaking with the visible/invisible distance and barrier between people, community, the city through the intervention of space design in a selected gated community. Under the premise of the least impact on the community, and to “Re-activate” the communal space + “Re-purpose” the existing terrace house to the community facilities + “Re-connect” people and community and city.

The sequence of shelter The film, Athmhuintearas: Perceptions of Shelter, which explores the antithesis nature of 1971 Belfast through using ’71 as a base for our setting and adapting the dangerous elements found within the film into those that can be perceived as safe or a much calmer showcase of everyday life. Design Narrative
The infinite room wants to express the unique feelings of fear, loss, emptiness, darkness - the expression of emotions/experiences of the past religious conflict in Belfast. Objective This is an act of using the room as a narrative and emotional means to provide people who have not experienced “trouble” in Northern Ireland in the past, with the emotions and experiences of people living in the past of conflict in Belfast.

Design of the room An empty box with mirrors, infinity extends corridors and ceiling. Design Idea An Infinite room works as a device to control the new way of seeing, like a lens as well as creates an unusual perception of seeing. The illusion of infinite room is all about distance and form while the physical presence of lighting also beneficially creates an advanced sensory form. How to limit people seeing, and understand the spaces and material by their own judgment.

Material Consideration
In the room, it automatically, only can scale between the eyes and the opening, judging the size. The opening of the end of each corridor controls the lighting from outside get into the room, create super low lighting of spaces. An infinite room creates three simple materials, which are concrete, mirror, and bubble vinyl tile (allocate at the front of the corridor). When people walk through the vinyl tile, it would create a popping sound. The specific form of the corridor would suspend the sound like a loop, pass around the spaces.

Idea Extract the idea of communal space of alley way, to test out if there is any possibility to create a more open space for people to gather, chat and interact. Programmes (Dynamic) - Outdoor Turf Sports Fields Transitions festival and event space - Gathering space and art installation - Street library - Green area - Communal worktable/desks Organized by local neighbourhood/community group (Sports Game/ Movie night...Dinner party on the roof) * Review The idea of the community roof garden is good, it looks like a huge infrastructure. However, if there is considering the ownership and building age of the houses, it will be a bit hard to create this kind of infrastructure in the neighbourhood. It re-adjusts the scale of the design, and try to link back to the strategy of opening up the connection of the neighbourhood.

PENETRATION OF ALLEY I see the alleyway as having the potential to open up as a communal space for the neighbourhood, as well as to connect people and space together. Selective Demolition to open up connection of the neighbourhood & infill community facilities Proposing a permeation/ through-block approach “NEW ALLEY” and selectivity demolition of existing housing situated at the centre of the alley, re-purpose the existing houses to community facilities and place the junction of the alley. Alternatively, a semi-private sky garden is another approach to break down the barrier between people. It provides a shared space for people acting, gathering, chatting, and interacting, which is around 3-4 houses to share one communal roof garden.

ECONOMIC Sometimes, it just needs a simple repair is all that is needed to fix damaged items. This saves the unnecessary cost of a replacement. When we send less waste to landfills, environmental costs are also reduced, and the whole community benefits. ENVIRONMENTAL Repair extends a product’s usable life, reduces waste and pollution, and saves energy, carbon emissions, and finite non-renewable resources.
