about the exhibition BRAND Advertising logos pepper tapestries of billboards, street signage and bus banners across urban landscapes in cities and rural villages all over the world. Branding, an essential tool for marketing and identity construction in late capitalism, serves as a mode of communication rife with meaning about access, possession, and consumption. In Brand, Vancouver-based artist Andre Petterson explores themes of globalization and cultural homogenization through the dissemination of visual ephemera in the marketing campaigns of large western corporations such as Disney, Coca-Cola, and the Louis Vuitton Group. Best known for his work blending painting and photography, Petterson exposes the breakdown of traditional distinctions between high and low, real and fake, old and new, urban and rural. Brand destabilizes the significance of recognizable cultural signifiers as they are re-contextualized and re-configured in different contexts; sometimes reinforcing wealth and status, other times receding to obscurity to the point of ironic absurdity. - Raissa Alvero 2017

“I’m intrigued as to how product brands and their placement, have evolved as they subconsciously impact our lives. Branding has become more and more globally blended. Every large city I visit, seems to be blanketed with names, once unique, now common place, regardless of language or culture. Prada, Louis Vuitton , Heinz , Toyota , Gucci , KFC, The Bodyshop , etc., are everywhere. T-shirts, billboards, food containers, personal items, sides of busses, all have donned brands for as long as I can remember. What seems different is the amount of it and the acceptance of it seems to be an absorbing trend. The internet and the personal phone have undoubtedly changed life as we knew it . People seem to wear and display brands with pride, even without apparent connection to the content. A young girl is wearing a D&G t-shirt while selling melons by the side of the dirt road, on a small island in Burma, a place reachable only by boat. There are no cars or apparent trappings of modern life. The ironies are fascinating. We are being - Branded.” - Andre Petterson 2017
