Wallace State’s Rotaract team assists with annual Rotary auction Story by: Bethany Sartain Photos by: Challie Johnson On Friday, March 9, the Wallace State Rotaract Club went to the Cullman Civic Center to help with the 45th Annual Rotary Auction. Goods like pet supplies, beauty products, restaurant gift cards, camping equipment, office supplies, authentic Cuban cigars and televisions had been donated by local businesses. The proceeds will go to local charities like The Link, Childhaven, Good Samaritan Health Clinic, and Cullman Area Workforce Solutions.

Rotaract students took a break from the auction to meet and greet a three-week-old lamb.

The students were even treated with a cute little guest when Challie and Garret Johnson brought their 3-week-old lamb for a visit.

Proceeds also purchased books for area school libraries and scholarships for high school seniors. The Rotaract and Rotary club set up tables and chairs, as well as priced and placed the goods for sale.

Abigail Long, left, and Hannah Manley, right, created a poster that reads “Don't let empty hands turn into empty hearts."

The event was fun for all, and over $50,000 was raised to help local charities. Rotaract and Rotary members were satisfied to give back to the community.

Campus Ministries sends student to Texas Story & Photos by: Challie Johnson When I first learned about Wallace State’s Campus Ministries, I knew I wanted to be involved. I joined during my first semester at Wallace State. It has been a fun way to meet people on campus while growing closer to the Lord. During Fall Break last semester, Christy Hicks, the Campus Ministries’ Director, led a group of students on a trip to Vidor, Texas, to aid with disaster relief. It was a great way to grow closer as a group and help a lot of people. “I really loved helping the people in Texas and meeting other Christian college students from around the US,” said Dawsen Miller, Campus Ministries member. “I have always wanted to go on a mission trip, and this was a great opportunity.” Miller, a Wallace State freshman, enjoyed his ministries so much that he will be traveling to Port Arthur, Texas, for a week this summer to help rebuild houses that were damaged during the hurricane.

on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. in room 100 of the Student Center.

Through Campus Ministries, Hicks leads devotions each week

Right now, Campus Ministries is preparing for its spring retreat.

Wallace State students, Josh Presto and Kyle League, help with the construction of houses affected in Texas.

It’s scheduled for April 20-21 at Smith Lake. If you are interested in learning more about Campus Ministries, call Christy Hicks at 256.338.4468.

lace State, but switched to softball and was MVP of the 1981 softball conference tournament. Mallard, formerly Barksdale, was one of the team’s top power hitters during the 1981-1982 seasons.

Instructor Profile: Cindy Mallard I met Wallace State instructor Mrs. Cindy Mallard at the beginning of spring semester when I began Accounting I.

Mallard was inducted into in the Wallace State Athletics Hall of Fame 2016 and is also a member of the Cullman County Hall of Fame.

Mrs. Mallard is currently substituting for Accounting at Wallace State. Initially, I was skeptical of having a substitute teach the class, however, my confidence in Mrs. Mallard's teaching quickly grew. She really has a passion for teaching and you can tell.

As an instructor, Mallard has been very active with Wallace State athletics during her 20 plus career with the college, serving as an academic advisor, among other roles.

“Accounting I is the basis for all accounting classes,” said Mallard. “I want my students to have a strong understand of the basics.” Mallard brings real world experience into the classroom in an exciting way. “I want my students to be excited about accounting,” said Mallard. “Many students are afraid of the class, so I want to make it

exciting for them.” Mallard’s current title is Wallace State’s Developmental Math Instructor. She has been a math instructor at Wallace State for 24 years now. Mallard’s journey at Wallace State began as a student where she

attended on an athletics scholarship. Mallard was an outfielder on the first Wallace State softball team during the 1981 season, a team that won the conference tournament in its inaugural season. She originally signed to play basketball at Wal-

She’s one of the college’s main volunteers during the annual AHSAA Northwest Regional tournament and has umpired baseball and softball and officiated volleyball. She has been an inspiration to me during my time at Wallace State and I have enjoyed her class. She is kind and will offer any help that a student may need.
