Spring Semester 2015 Schedule of Classes • Page 2

A Message from the President Welcome to Wallace State Community College! As you look through our many offerings, you will see classes that meet every preference for learning – day, evening, weekend, on campus, and online. Our fully online Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees are increasingly popular for students whose busy lives make travel to campus difficult. These online degrees are transferrable for students interested in continuing their education at the university level, and complement our online Associate in Applied Science degrees in Health Information Technology, Business Education, and Computer Science, as well as many more online classes noted in these pages. Tutoring is available to students through the English, Math, Biology, Computer Science, and Student Support Services departments. The college continues to move forward to offer new programs to meet the needs of not only our students but also our community. One such offering is the Transportation Management program. This new option in the Business Management program will provide qualified and trained personnel for positions as Logistics Coordinators, Safety Compliance Specialists and more. Another new program in the works is the Sustainable Agriculture program, which will be offered through our Agriculture Production program. This option will teach students about producing food, plant and animal products using farming techniques that protect the environment, public health and animal welfare. We also have a new option for students interested in entering the medical field. The Patient Care Specialist program is a two-semester program that provides Certified Nursing Assistant and Electrocardiography Technician Certifications, as well as completion of the Alabama Career Readiness Assessment. Students on campus are taking advantage of our unique Learning Community classes in large numbers, and finding the opportunities for forging friendships with students across disciplines and in shared activities have benefits beyond the classroom. Learning community courses are offered in a variety of programs during the 9:30 a.m. time period, and include activities such as sporting events, music and theatre productions, film screenings, museum visits and other events. The Spring 2015 Semester Learning Communities will kick off on Jan. 21, with a concert by The Doctors and The Lawyers. Student success is always our focus, and that is why the Aspen Institute designated Wallace State as one of the top 120 community colleges in America, why Community College Week ranked Wallace State among the “Top 50 Associate Degrees: Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences” in the United States, why Wallace State leads the System in graduation rates, and why the college has joined the national Achieving the Dream initiative. Be one of Us this semester as we celebrate, Arts in April, championship golf, softball and baseball, and the many other activities spring has to offer. We look forward to serving you! Vicki P. Karolewics President

Admission Policy ther information is available by contacting Lion Central, Wallace State’s One Stop Enrollment Center, or viewing the WSCC Catalog online.

Wallace State Community College is an open admissions institution. All students who have earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. In addition to an application for admission, students are required to supply the College with an official copy of their high school transcript or official copy of their GED scores. Students transferring from another college must submit an admissions application and an official copy of their transcript(s) from each college they have attended. Transient students must submit a transient letter from their home institution stating the courses they will be allowed to take in addition to an application for admission.

Accelerated high school students who have completed the tenth grade, have a cumulative “B” average, and are recommended by the local principal may enroll at Wallace State only in postsecondary courses for which high school prerequisites have been completed. Exceptions may apply for students documented as “gifted and talented” according to the standards included in the State Plan for Exceptional Children and Youth.

Graduates from a non-accredited high school with a diploma demonstrating successful completion of a course of study on the secondary level based upon the Carnegie units required by the state education agency at the time of the award (currently 24) and minimum ACT score of 16 or the equivalent SAT score of 790 are eligible for admission. If the above requirements are not met, the student must take a GED test.

The Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit High School program allows eligible high school students to enroll in college classes concurrently with high school classes, either on the college campus or at the high school, and receive both high school and college credit. The student must be in grade 10, 11 or 12, have a “B” average; and obtain written approval of the Principal and Superintendent.

Special requirements may apply to International Students seeking admission. Students must submit official transcripts, an I-20 Form, TOEFL scores, declaration of responsibility statement, proof of insurance, and all appropriate admissions forms. Fur-

Non-Credit students who enroll exclusively in non-credit courses may be granted admission without a minimum score on the ACT or SAT, a GED Certificate, or transcripts from a high school or college.

Financial Aid Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully: APPLY EARLY – Students applying for financial aid should apply at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Applying early will help ensure a timely response to federal guidelines and will allow for any unforeseen problems/situations that might occur. Applying early will also help the student avoid potential long lines or waits. BOOKSTORE CHARGES If Pell Awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges, Wednesday, December 10, 2014. DISTANCE EDUCATION students are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all Blackboard, Internet, and video classes. Pell funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified. BALANCE CHECKS Per federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be mailed. Attendance Verification will be turned in on Monday, January 12. Students who have not been electronically verified as attending their classes by their instructors will not be able to see their Financial Aid funds on their MyWallaceState account for that class that has not been confirmed as attending. As more classes are verified, more funds will be added to the student account balance that can be seen on the MyWallaceState student account. Students can check their attendance status on their MyWallaceState account under the Student Tab. Students must attend ALL CLASSES before Pell and loan funds will be mailed. Students’ balance checks will not be processed until all holds are cleared.

PLEASE NOTE: Students in DISTANCE EDUCATION courses are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all online and video classes. If you are registered in classes that begin later than January 9 your balance check will be mailed at a later date. You must attend classes prior to any funds being mailed for a particular class. Withdrawal from all classes after receiving balance checks will result in Pell overpayment and future Pell payments for WSCC or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid. INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIP recipients must complete a FAFSA prior to enrollment being completed. Scholarships cannot be added to the student account until the FAFSA is received. REMEMBER Students must re-file for Pell Grants for every academic year (Fall – Summer). The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available online at www.fafsa.gov. Get On Board with the 2014-2015

Common Read

Wallace State Community College began the sixth annual Common Read Program Fall 2014. The Common Read brings together students, faculty, and staff in discussions and activities centered on a new selection each year. The choice for 2014/2015 is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This work of fiction has been described as “Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw…award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.” The subject will provide fodder for classroom discussion on relationships, philosophy, death, and growing up. Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the WSCC Bookstore. Please join us in reading this great book even if it’s not required in your courses. Watch the WSCC calendar for postings about a variety of speakers and events related to the book starting this August. Happy reading!
