President’s Message

Welcome to spring semester at Wallace State, where we are focused on student success! Spring semester is always an exciting time at our college, and never more so than this year, when we expect to see more new and returning students on campus than ever before. Did you know Wallace State produces more graduates than any college in the Alabama Community College System? The success our students achieve, and the positive feelings students have about us, are a tremendous source of pride for our faculty and staff. We know our reputation for excellence is based on continued exemplary service to you, and we were delighted to learn that, according to a report by ACT, we were chosen by students across the state as their first choice among community colleges again this year. As our schedule’s cover depicts, the Year of the Arts we celebrated in 2010 was really just a beginning of our celebration of the arts. Students and community members have indicated their support for arts-related events and programming in record numbers, and we have listened. More exhibits and performances continue in Spring 2011, beginning with an exhibit of Japanese posters on loan from the Birmingham Museum of Art in the Burrow Center in January, and a showing of resident artist Bill Sharpton’s work in February. Our new Advanced Visualization Center, which opened this past summer, will be one of the highlights of 2011 as students begin to take advantage of learning in virtual reality, using 3-D and 4-D simulation-based learning platforms. A new certificate in 3-D simulation and gaming design offered through the Visual Communications department will begin soon. Green construction will be another focus in the coming year. A green construction training program is already underway. Two remodeling projects provide hands on training for students to measure the efficiency of a wellconstructed standard energy-efficient home against a LEED certified green home. These will be models for teaching and learning and provide valuable insight for the construction industry and field trip opportunities for classes learning about environmental impact, construction and energy issues. Student activities, outstanding athletic programs, intramurals, clubs and organizations, service learning and volunteer opportunities make our campus feel like a community. Our faculty, staff and administration put students first, challenging you while providing a supportive environment and the tools you need to succeed. Whether you are a high school student enrolled in one of our dual enrollment programs, an adult looking for training for a new career, a busy parent in need of online classes, a high school student seeking a traditional college experience, or a community member interested in continuing education, we are here to serve you. I extend a personal invitation to you to visit our campus, either in person or online, and experience the wonderful educational environment you'll find here. Wallace State students are interested in living lives less ordinary, and we are committed to empowering them. It’s going to be a great spring!

—Dr. Vicki P. Hawsey, President

Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully. APPLY EARLY • Students applying for financial aid should apply at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. BOOKSTORE CHARGES • If Pell Awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges Monday, December 13.

DISTANCE EDUCATION • Students are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all WebCT and video classes. Pell funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified.

BALANCE CHECKS • Per federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be distributed. Students must attend ALL CLASSES before Pell and loan funds will be distributed. Students’ balance checks will not be processed until all holds are cleared. Students will not receive refunds on classes until after the class has had at least one class meeting. (Pell distribution dates may be adjusted for students who are registered for Mini Term II classes). If you are registered for classes that begin later than January 10, your balance check may be disbursed at a later date. You must attend classes prior to any funds being distributed for a particular class. Pell Grant balance checks will be distributed in the Coliseum on Thursday, January 20 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Checks will be available in the Cashier’s Office beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21. Students will be placed on hold for registration and release of transcripts until the funds are repaid. STUDENTS ON PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS • The WSCC Financial Aid Office requests that all students on private funded scholarships contact the Financial Aid Office three (3) weeks prior to registration to ensure that all paperwork is complete.

LION ALERT

Wallace State Community College is pleased to announce the third semester of the implementation of “Lion Alert”, our new emergency alert and notification system. Lion Alert delivers rapid, multi-platform messages in the event of an emergency to students, faculty members, and staff. This will be your best source for timely information and instructions on what to do in the event of any campus emergency or notification.

You no longer need to rely on the media, calls to the college or your friends, or coming to the campus to learn about the adverse impact on campus operations due to: severe weather, power outages, criminal activity, threats, or other emergency situations. Signing up for Lion Alert will ensure that this information is automatically delivered to you at the email addresses and phone numbers (by voice and/or text message) that you provide within moments of any such alerts being sent by the college. Lion Alert messages provide this important information to you directly from authorized members of the college’s administration and security personnel. You can rely on Lion Alert as your official source of the most accurate and current information. We invite you now to follow the simple steps below to log-in to your private Lion Alert “Dashboard” and review your contact information. Please be assured that all contact information you provide is kept confidential, safe, and secure, and will never be used for any purpose beyond what you have authorized. Your information is for the official use Wallace State Community College’s emergency alert system only and is never shared with any third parties. We encourage you to review your information right nowR BEFORE you forget! The entire process will take only a few minutes, and you will receive the benefits from this important service throughout the entire school year. The steps to access your information is listed below. While reviewing, if all information is correct as listed, then just log back out. If changes are desired, make any changes and click the disk icon ( ) to save. If you choose to opt out of this Lion Alert service and not receive emergency or non-emergency messages, you will need to use the red circle icon ( ) “delete” to remove your contact information. If you have any questions about Lion Alert, please contact the Vice President for Students Office at (256) 352-8233 or (256) 352-8340 for assistance. Lion Alert – Emergency Notification System

The Wallace State Community College campus is located in the heart of North Alabama, eight miles south of Cullman, on U.S. Highway 31 within the city limits of Hanceville. Students who commute find it convenient because of its strategic location - 60 miles south of Huntsville, 40 miles south of Decatur, and 45 miles north of Birmingham, off U.S. Interstate 65.
