These simple tips for frugal living can dramatically change your life over time. This is a tough period in our economic history, but it does not necessarily mean you have to go without. By just making a few adjustments in your shopping habits you can continue to live comfortably or even improve your current lifestyle by helping you get out of debt, save for your children's education and / or retirement. Life is winnable game, except for the death part. And if you play to win this game, and make it a fun challenge your whole attitude about shopping will change as well as your outlook on life. You will no longer see what is lacking in your life when you focus on the control and outcome you do have. By following these frugal living tips you can also set a great example for your children by teaching them valuable life skills through action and not words. So get clear on why it is you want to change your current financial situation, and how you handle money, or rather how money handles you. Once you understand what is driving you to spend uncontrollably, whether it is trying to keep up with the Joneses, trying to fill some emptiness in your life, or maybe you just haven't learned this important skill, you will now feel some sense of control over another part of your life. 1. Planning - Never leave the house without a plan of attack. If there is a leak in your wallet, it is because you may purchase things at the store you already have at home. How often has this happen to you? I personally have a good friend who every time she is in a store she buys aluminum foil, and right now you can find about seven or eight rolls of this stuff around her house. Knowing what it is you need will also help you combat the gimmicks by the stores to entice you into spending more than you planned on. 2. Impulse Purchases - There is a reason those counters next to the check stand are called impulse counters as well as a reason stores like you to wait in line for a certain length of time. Because your chances of making an impulse purchase goes up. But this is not the only place in the store where you may buy something on impulse. If you come across an item that you "think" you need, put it down and give yourself twenty-four hours to consider it instead of suffering through buyer's remorse later. 3. Coupons - Every week in the mail I receive mailers from a variety of sources and stores with coupons for just about anything. Each Sunday, our local paper proudly displays the $ amount of coupons in its inserts, anywhere from $300-$600 over the last few years. You can also find printable coupons online.

4. Wholesale Membership Clubs - Buying in bulk can save you hundreds of dollars over a year even when you include the cost of a membership to places such as Sam's or Costco. These memberships may also have other perks for joining, such as discounts on gas, tires, batteries and even travel. 5. Secondhand - Thrift stores, second hand and consignment shops became a necessity while raising two girls who were growing out of clothes quicker than we could find them. We have also saved hundreds of dollars over the years by purchasing used items such as a dining room table, bookshelves, books and all kinds of other furniture. Not only are you saving money, but you are helping our planet by recycling these products. 6. Buying online - A quick search in your favorite search engine will help you to find some of the same products you are looking for locally, still cheaper even when you tack on the shipping charges. On line auction sites are always a good source. 7. Comparison shopping - Educate yourself about whatever product or services you are spending your hard earned money on, not only will you save money on those products, but gas and time travelling around your town. Go online and do a search, call local companies using your Yellow Pages. This will give you more negotiating power when dealing with those who have bargaining room in their prices. 8. Generic - Buy generic! I have not purchased a national brand of medication in over twenty years. Pick up the national brand's bottle, and compare it to the discount chain's product and you will see it is made from the exact same ingredients but at a steep discount. The same goes for toiletries and most food items. Living frugally is not, and should not feel like a punishment. This is about living a much more simple and economical life that, to steal a line from Dave Ramsey, will help you to "live like no one else, so you can live like no one else." Instead of money being wasted on unnecessary and costly items, you will have money for the important things like family vacations, medical emergencies and anything else that life just may throw at you.
