Generally if you are planning a trip into wilderness country you are advised to go with several friends or family members. Usually the experience is more enjoyable when you can sit around a campfire at some future date and relive the exciting events of the trip with each other. In fact most safety professionals highly recommend that when you travel in the nation's forests and woodland areas that you do so as a small group. Since the individual wilderness related education can vary greatly between one person and another it is recommended that there should always be an experienced person readily available to serve as the group leader. When you are unfamiliar with the rules of wilderness survival and you insist upon traveling in the words alone you merely increase your chances of injury or possible death. Even those people who heed this rule and start their adventure into the wilderness with the company of a group stand the possibilities of inadvertently getting separated from the others. In some cases an injured members of your group may be required to remain back at a safe location while the others return to the local civilized world in search of help. It becomes important if not entirely vital that one make plans for various worst case scenarios when going on any type of wilderness excursion. We have already stated that you should travel in a small group. Each member of this group should prepare for the trip into the wilderness and become familiar with the group plans as they apply to the excursion. Make certain that you are aware of any shelters located along the various pathways. Have knowledge of the availability of camp areas as they relate to the direction you are heading while each stopping point along your trail should have a supply of safe drinking water. In the event of a major problem you should have at your disposal a means of signaling the outside world for help. Acceptable solutions to this problem can include such high tech equipment as cell or satellite communications as well as GPS direction guidance to assist you in finding the nearest location for help. Become familiar with the route that you will be taking as you tread through the wilderness country. When possible take well used trails rather than off country adventures into unknown locales. Take with you a map and a listing of your itinerary and try to follow it exactly. As you follow through the map make personal notes on it as to the various points where you can obtain assistance should the need arise. When navigating your way in the wild you will discover that there are several ways that it can be done. Some of these means are only effective if the weather is fair and the visibility conducive. Always have a back up plan in mind for your navigation solutions on any trip to the woods. As mention briefly above the Global Positioning Satellites or GPS is your best insurance for knowing


your exact position at any time. The GPS will reveal your position in relation to your proposed destination. GPS units can be purchased as a compact handheld unit which can be pre-loaded with various maps of your choice. It is always a good idea to carry a light and perhaps a laptop as well. If you don't own a GPS system you can revert to the older topographic maps, even the stars or perhaps a compass. Using your map in conjunction with a good compass you should have no difficulties find your way back to civilization. Surviving in the wild is feasible if you are properly prepared and ready for such an emergency. The key is you must be knowledgeable and know how to deal with this type of emergency.
