Real estate websites come in a wide variety - from meticulously created sites to several cookiecutter varieties. Some reflect the agent's personality and reveal his or her niche. On others it's difficult to even find the agent's name. And some are a mis-match of custom and cookie-cutter. These are the sites that start out strong, but falter along the way. Perhaps the agent had a limited budget, so used some custom copy and some of the "canned" variety. The result is a disjoint that can confuse and disappoint visitors. For example, let's say an agent's niche is exclusive waterfront homes. He or she may have made it clear on the home page and again on the buyer and seller pages. The agent bio may have shown why the agent is an expert in this niche and shown that his or her hobbies are also tied to the water. But then... someone told that agent that to get high rankings in the search engines, you need more pages of content. So he went in search of content and got a package of buyer articles and a package of seller articles. And that's where the disjoint begins. Those pre-packaged articles are generally written for a mixed audience, and often for an unsophisticated audience. They contain articles for first time homebuyers and give advice about topics such as budgeting for a home. The seller articles give tips on everything from staging for curb appeal to the best way to hold a yard sale when downsizing to enter a retirement home. Simply stated - the articles written for an unsophisticated general audience don't match the exclusive audience the agent hoped to attract. They are not of interest to the niche clients. And in fact, some of those exclusive buyers and sellers might take offense at the agent's supposed assumption that they need such advice. Worse, many of the articles you can find either for free or for sale are simply "fluff." They don't say anything at all and are a waste of the reader's time. Others give bad information - they were no doubt written by someone who bought or sold a house once, but doesn't actually know anything about real estate. Those are best left OFF your site entirely. Content is definitely a plus for the search engines - but the wrong content is a minus for your appeal to the niche you've chosen to serve. What can you do instead?

First, if you're planning to use an article on your site, read it first. Eliminate articles that are pure fluff, ones that give wrong information, and any that don't fit your niche audience. Take the time to find articles that fit your niche clients, write your own articles, or have them written to your specifications. And if your web package offers a variety of articles for your use or you purchase a package of articles, choose only those that fit your audience. If your niche is senior relocation, bypass the first time buyer articles. If your niche is first time buyers, bypass the downsizing articles. More isn't better if it doesn't please your audience. Remember that everything on your website represents you. So make it represent the professional you really are.
