CHAPTER 4
CASE STUDIES ON GREEN ROOF BUILDINGS

The urgent requirement for green roof buildings stems from a continuation of the depletion of green space due to gentrification and the resulting housing development crisis (as covered in Chapter 2). As a result, London must swiftly be adapted to meet with the current society requirements. In parallel with the city’s rapid urbanisation, biophilic architecture are also beneficial for its inhabitants with proven biophilic factors such as natural light and ventilation with restorative health benefits similar to Vincent Callebaut Architecture’s concept for Semaphore as explored in Chapter 1.
To cement the research in Chapter 2, this section will explore examples of successful intensive living roof gardens sit-

uated in London. All the case studies covered here were designed with recreational purposes integrated at the forefront of the design principles. As mentioned in Chapter 1, intensive living green roof gardens are vegetated roofs requiring regular maintenance such as irrigation, and therefore require natural sunlight and rain water etc. to survive, making them advantageous for urban food growing.
