The power of space Home

The hierarchy in home design The openings in architecture like windows and doors often imply following circulation and organize functional spaces. They are unavoidable and respectful when designers want to place spaces. But would interior design be boring and dominated due to current architectural language ? In this project, I try to embrace and adapt the openings. Mostly, the tool of dividing space into private and public sectors is used when distributing functional space in home design. The private and public sector effects and shapes each other when considering the plan, and the hierarchy is clear after defining space into general two areas. However, I think the hierarchy in space is somehow complicated and should be more careful while defining the spaces. All I experienced in the case is define the spaces with openings which may indicate more powerful meaning and function because the openings often mean the connecting of outside and inside environment and the hierarchy is much more levels through openings.

Space within Space Despite similar form of the inside space, the openings along differ the levels of outer space with current ones. As satisfying least requirements for bedroom and bathroom, I took two functional spaces as first-class role in hierarchy, then the space outside as secondary, then the space in the backyard, finally the real outer space outside the house. All of them organized by openings.

The meaning of "three" Since I not only use the dichotomy(private and public sector), three could be another way to inspire the design. Unlike the word "two" describes as equal, contended, opposite meaning, the word three describes the completeness and is more in mathematic. For example, if we exclude bedroom and bathroom which achieve basic demands, the public sector may include LDK space, balcony, backyards, and staircase space, but they are actually in different positions and orders. The traits of those spaces are effected by human activities and openings. On the forming side, three implies triangle, and I look for the essence of the chinese traditional number of three to get the rhythm of repetition.

Feminism in home design In the book"Discimination by design", Leslie kanes Weisman uses dichotomy and territoriality for her theories. I make use of the two concepts to distribute the functional spaces. For example, traditionally, kitchen belongs to women while study room belongs to men. The former provides service to whole family, and the latter gives men extremely private and silent space. In Taiwan, with limited space per family, the kitchen often is arranged in rearmost of the house which is narrow and dark, on the contrary, the study room is on dominant position which seems to own most personal privacy. The two kinds of space tend to be gender related, however, with the progress in achieving gender equity, I were not going to remove the difference of gender spaces. In other words, I still have to admit dichotomy in home design but in respectful and detailed approach. Like in this case, I try to carry out the concept of equity from feminism. The kitchen and study room both are located opposite while the main bedroom is in the middle and having similar area, furthermore, two chairs also imply the power of study doesn't belong to one. The double openings imply releasing of power, and the front door stands as an axis distributed other spaces but in slight way due to openings. Though there are solid wall to divide hierarchy of space, the doors' orientation give much more connection between those spaces.

The essence of medical cosmetology I want to take medical cosmetology as kind of reconstruction. It was the very first step trying to expose and figure out people's motivation. In my opinion, the intention beyond involves personal memory, growth environment and imagination. Taking another look at this way, the more emphatic attitude towards cosmetic recovery it is, not just emotional, and that is, finding the originality of concept of recovery. Anyway, the idea deeply affected me how I experienced.

The fake seems to replace the original ones, thought they are not totally similar. With rough shape, scale and proportion, new things can definitely become the old. Another exploration is the surface which includes color and texture, the one mimics the other one. They are symbolized as completion, no guilty, no hiding and no emotion.

The experiment of the idea of mangrove forest In interior design, when talking about the red, it often comes up with production red surface or red painting. The color itself becomes the red for intimation. The orderness in mangrove forest is the other thing trying to mimic, however it easily occupied too many free space in the project due to limited controllable space.

02 The experiment of a quarter This one is inspired by the artwork of Yayoi Kusama. My thought about is the invisible things or things that we know but not discover yet, and the expression of primitive life which basic shapes show. I think different sizes of the same shape imply forming of life. The shapes become a pattern while differing gradually in scale. As changing dimension goes outwards from the original ones, the quarter within bigger one , and it has more rules with ones besides than circles due to traits of square. In this point, it's rather stable and growing.

Chipping Imitation indicates particular direction. The chipping of the unit is like a barrier to stop eye moving. The more chipping it takes, the more stable it is.

Like visiting in the mangrove forest where the trees grow beneath water, it feels untouchable. From this concept, the objects grow from the ceiling which can not be reached too.

The variety in pattern: reconstruction and intimation Intimation is a way to reconstruct in terms of the traits they share. In this progress, repetition and rhythm occur at the same time and It becomes to a pattern or texture depends on scale. When the action of intimation happens incompletely, it turns out being interesting. And the variety could make sense in terms of different functional spaces which tending to be limited activities in this project. For example, the ceiling in the project visualizes grid system, and it's totally 2D. The gap of certain squares provide the clue of human position ,then the void one of eight in the cube(60x60x40cm) stops eye moving and shows 3D as the variety. The pattern of ceiling assimilates into the space not dominating or defining, achieving diminishing subjectivity.

Break the grid system Since the space are composited of cubes(60x60cm), from the variety point of view, it should break the spatial situation or may feel like too mechanic, and the interesting thing is, it's the kind pattern that make the space organic. The stair breaks and divides the space in architecture elements. Another one I take is the reception counter which comes from ellipse. Conceptually, mutual intimation may be trapped in unlimited flowing of one being another one. So it's necessary that these two elements to get rid visual and mind out of system, making them coexist.

Project description: To design a home with rough 350m2 area that is united with two single house, so the united house is totally symmetry. Requirement: A family with 5 people, and general home functional space demands.

A phrase of the music I fetched a phrase from the windband piece named "October". With the same phrase, a wide range of rhythm design is created because of the same math beyond. From this point of view, the rhythm created by interior design is going to balanced with the rhythm created by original structure of the architecture.

Rhythm in space In design, there are many ways to express the rhythm with repetition. I assume people are music themselves, that is, the path they walk through create the rhythm because when walking occurs then the relation of see-seen occurs too. So one of manner to manipulate the rhythm is the forming of circulation. However, when the architectural wall is refined, it already limits spatial interior activity, and the circulation will be forming naturally. In other words, it's not necessary to deliberately intervene the circulation. In the book "Spaces of Adventure", H.D.Bih, delivering the similar issue, he argued spatial behavior is the experience of living in the world while behaviorism thinks behavior is controlled by the environment and cognitivism thinks is by the human brain. As a result, as still going to expose the spatial rhythm (not just visual rhythm), I expose the relation between interior space and architectural structure.

The experiment of fetching a pharse

Recreate the piece of music After analyzing the piece of music, there are two main features I want to apply into design with. Firstly, it's the massive repetition of counterpoint and harmony. Secondly, it's the slur that organized the whole phrases. Taking easily a look at the original plan, the basic plan is just the east - west way. The continuous shapes of circle represents the slur music which circle can be also seen the counterpoint to square plan and the progressive changing scale of shapes makes the axis offset in which the plan has different weight on opposite way, the idea of closing and opening achieving. I think rhythm in space contains much more than such visual design, also what I was testing is what would happen if taking account architectural structure(rhythm) into of interior space designing while both of them show similarly general circulation.

The experiment of Charcoal The charcoal has a variety of sizes because of its characteristic, from big black ones like stones to little like almost the powder. With the thought of how we think of the charcoal, layers which are composited from the bottom to top, from sand like pieces to huge ones are seen to be commonly nature. I sketched them and drew them into tracing paper. The characteristic of composing the layers is more obvious, in other words, they are purely constructed along z axis compared former ones are in more complicated three dimension. The body from top to bottom seems to be continuous ,and since we see the outermost layer , the thing still can occupy the area without any of them within.

Stacking Library

Stacking and territoriality When someone is piling up the charcoal, he is creating the territory meanwhile, and in my opinion, the nature of creating the territory is for communicating. From the aspect of environment psychology, territory actually maintains the safety of society and relationship between people. The video I recorded is the exposition of progress I stacking the charcoal. And there are conclusions after I finished the work. First, every time I finished the pile, the tiny pieces left forming the territory. Second, the sounds in the video made by action is another important thing to follow, like grinding sound between paper or tiles and even crashing sounds of the charcoal itself. All of them show invisible territory which were occupying the space.

Stacking https://vimeo.com/156191100

04 Territory in space The behavior of occupying the seat of the table is also creating personally the territory. It works as the private space, and as I mentioned that is naturally the communication, so the goal in the library case is for users involving with other users. It seems contradictory when the library should provide a quiet place, however, the library is actually not private, somehow with less or more sounds. In this point, I think the people in public library is not about "I" read the book, but "we". In this project, I try to expose the progress from privacy to publicity by which making by users theirself.

The ceiling and plan development From the concept of stacking, taking the ceiling both top and bottom, the gap respectively indicates the occupation underneath the ceiling and the orientation of space.

Project description: To design a pavilion in the park as art work.

The inspiration from "I and Thou" In the book, "I and Thou", Martin Buber thinks people have two aspects which contains both I and thou, and it's dualism. He said the art exists as form of it from essence of thou. From this point of view, the art is mostly close to "thou". In fact, thou can not be analyzed, like traits, position, time, and forming. Therefore, it's hard to transform directly the concept of I and Thou into design language. However, dualism is a approach to explore, including the relation between I and Thou.

Duality Pavilion

Duality The experiment for two drawings explored more on the contrast which I think it's the base of duality. In first one, the black stone surrounded with white area is a focus but at the time, it is isolated and alone. The similar idea of grouping is strengthened with green oblique lines, though it's hidden within it due to its similar color and shape. In the second one, the yellow solid circle is dominated by the outside elements and also dominates others, trying use overlapping and relative position to exhibit the duality.

05 The inspiration from the umbrella Umbrella is a house can move. It isolates exterior and interior environment, and taking a look at details, the semi openness provides much more possibility to connect with outside area. We hold a umbrella when it's rainy and sunny, it's a behavior to stay life, in other words, to survive through particular situation. Meanwhile, it provides an opportunity to experience the environment without the life be hurting, like standing by the openness( window, door). The nature of umbrella is quite same to the pavilion, but the umbrella is extra lonely. And the space umbrella occupy simultaneously expresses "in" and "out" whatever the person is inside or outside the umbrella, and that's what I try to figure out the duality of the umbrella.

The level The absolute level plays an important role in this project. Firstly, it's the idea from the umbrella with plane on the bottom, and it also indicates the viewpoint of basic engineer compared with curved plane. Secondly, since the project is forming with less mathematics so far, the plane gives the axis to stabilize the two objects which I think they are both dichotomy and dual. Finally, the plane gives the feeling of surviving(and it actually does), which is opposite to the curved plane downward. The comparison between two sides would be more complicated.
