69 years of Lifesaving Service to our Community. Once again Wanda SLSC can proudly boast NO LIVES LOST during our patrol hours as defined by our Club Patrol Agreements. This season our first day on patrol was on the 20th of September 2014 and we finished on the 26th of April 2015. Our active members carried out a total of 7990 voluntary patrolling hours on the beach, 490 hours of water safety with 722 preventative actions, 50 rescues, 59 first aid cases, none of these requiring ambulances, and a total of 18 beach closures due to surf conditions for the season. Our members can be very proud of their Vigilance and Service they provide for the beach going public. Comparing the statistics from last season our rescues were under 50% of those recorded last season and our preventative actions down nearly 33% whilst our total patrolling hours were up by 540 hours. My thanks must go to Graham Hill who once again has stepped up to take on the role as Club Captain, a position that he has held many times before and brings a wealth of knowledge to this incredibly important role in our Surf Club. These very good statistics no doubt come from the hard work and hours he puts into this role which was harder this year as Graham did not have a Director of Lifesaving to help share the work load. Also of course my sincere appreciation to all the Patrol Captains and Vice Captains who all do a fantastic job running their Patrols so efficiently. This year also saw the role of IRB Captain taken up by Trevor Taylor; he has been ably assisted by Steve Stavrou, Sam Axiotis, Graham Wright, Jared Adams-Lau and

Brett Atikson . Trevor has put in countless hours ensuring that all the equipment was working efficiently, repairing engines and the IRBs, ensuring that there was plenty of fuel for the patrols as well as water safety. Whilst Sam and Graham oversaw the training of crews and drivers, this is an incredibly important section, one that we cannot function without on every patrol and carnival. These members have done a tremendous job, thank you! I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to all the Directors for their support; it has been a very hard year with not having a Club House, and completing the building of the beautiful new Club House. It has meant many of the Directors had to work off site with their committees. My thanks to” Sharkies” who so kindly let us use their meeting rooms for all our Directors and subcommittee meetings. Also our thanks to North Cronulla SLSC for allowing Brett Furniss to use their Club House for all our Life Saving education training. This year we have seen the completion of the largest and most expensive building works that Wanda has ever undertaken, what was known as Stage 2. These works saw the vast majority of the old part of the building demolished to make way for new downstairs facilities such as new office, gym, women’s toilets and change rooms, caretaker’s room, larger Nipper and lifesaving storage areas and education room. Upstairs, we now have a very large protected

north facing balcony which flows off the very spacious “Founders Room”, kitchen, bar which services both the Founders Room and balcony and storage areas. I would like to extend my gratitude to both our Architects – ARTAS Architects and Builders – INTREC for their professional and personal attention to the completion of this project. I also must thank the very hardworking Building subcommittee for the enormous number of hours that they gave to ensure that this project was finished to such a high standard. E

The C.V. Forshaw Trophy, which is presented to the “Most Consistent Member”, is voted by secret ballot over the last twelve months by the Directors at the monthly meetings. The honour this year again goes to our Director of Education and also a member of the Building Subcommittee, Brett Furniss. Brett’s role includes the teaching squads of Bronze Medallion, SRC, ARTC and other special awards; he is also an Assessor taking many of the Lifesaving exams in the District. Even with the difficulties of having to complete the lifesaving education at North Cronulla SLSC our Education Awards are up 40% on last year’s awards. It is pleasing to see that all the hard work Brett has put into education and helping with the building works has been recognised by this highly sort after award. On behalf of the Directors and members of Wanda, Thank you Brett!

CHAMPION CLUB Wanda SLSC 3rd Place

The JAG placed 2nd at the State Titles at Umina and Ocean Beaches their best result for quite a few years. Congratulations to our talented younger members; also to a hard working JAG Committee, led by Ian Blackhall, Chairperson. Our future continues to look bright, with some great competitors and future lifesavers progressing through the ranks. The Club continues to work alongside the JAG to ensure that we can maintain and improve on the retention of our Nippers moving into the senior ranks; these members are our future. The JAG ran a very successful “Wave Warriors” Carnival which proved to be very popular and one that they want to build on for next season. The training camp once more proved to be very

popular with our younger members with instruction coming from our senior competitors, some of which are State and National Champions. The Wanda JAG was also well represented with 6 members part of the Sydney Interbranch team. The 42nd Brooks, Caltex Sutherland Surf saw Mick Brannock in the role of the Co-ordinator, which he does so well, along with Anne Caterson in her role of Traffic Management Organiser. Mick, Anne and the S2S Committee do an amazing job pulling together an event that is iconic in the Sutherland Shire. This years S2S saw a change in the finish. With the numbers of participants and spectators increasing it was becoming quite congested finishing in front of the Club House, with the now long straight finish into Don Lucas Reserve has given the competitors and spectators much more room to disperse at the end of the race. As we approach our 43rd S2S I strongly encourage all our members to get behind this committee and take up a job on the day. The funds that are raised from this event go back into the club to assist all members with the day to day costs of running the Club and the lifesaving equipment that is needed for our active members to carry out their lifesaving duties. Also our appreciation goes to Chris and Rhonda Fox, Lizzy Sargeant, Carol Woods and Gay Curtis for the running and organisation of the “Crust/Snap Spring Beach Classic”. This event continues to grow and I am sure it will become a popular event on the fun run calendar Some other fundraisers that have contributed to the benefit of our club and members this year were ■■

To our Gym Manager, Rod Holdsworth, thank you for keeping our Gym in such wonderful working condition. This year saw a much larger role for Rod with the dismantling of the old gym and setting up in the much larger, brighter and airier space for the gym. My thanks to Solly, Bill Prestage and Gary Schmalfeldt for proving so much help to Rod with the move and set up of the equipment. Thank you to our new registrar Ken Smith for looking after our membership records so ably. Thank you to Wanda’s Ladies Committee and Chairwoman Lyn Robbins for the many hours they give to making our carnivals and functions so successful. I always receive so many lovely compliments about our Ladies’ catering at the carnivals that we run. These hard working ladies sponsored the prizes for our 100% Lifesavers for Presentation Night. Thank you to John Douglas for the hours you spend on the computer entering our members into the carnivals. To our many Club Sponsors, we cannot thank you enough for your generous support. I wish to ask all members to take note of our sponsors and patronize their business houses. To our major sponsors: Brooks, St George & Sutherland Shire Leader, Tradies, The Holt Group, Sutherland Shire Council, Caltex Petroleum, Coates Hire, Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar Cronulla, Kareena Private Hospital, Sydney Water, The Shire Local Banking, Coca-Cola Amatil, Nova 969, Veolia Water Australia, Payce,

TJM Southside, ANSTO,AJ Grant, Kemp Strang Lawyers, Nine News, INTREC, Snap Caringbah, CJ Doyle Contracting Services, Engadine Bowling and Recreation Club and Lloyds SUPA IGA Cronulla we thank you for your continued involvement with Wanda. To Gay Curtis a very big thank you and our gratitude for all her hard work and professionalism in helping secure and looking after our sponsors. The contribution of those outside the club is not only welcomed but greatly valued. There are some people that have helped and assisted the Club over the past year. I wish to thank Scott Morrison Federal Member for Cook, Mark Speakman State Member for Cronulla, Barry Collier State Member for Miranda, John Rayner General Manager SSC, Cr Kent Johns Mayor SSC, and Cr Kevin Schreiber, Cr Scott Williams Cr Carol Provan JP CMC Councillors A Ward SSC. Brad Whittaker Manager for Beach Operations SSC, and the Life guards who we work closely with. To our sister Clubs in Bate Bay I wish you all the best for the coming season, and I look forward to working closely with you on the many District matters that have arisen in the course of this season. We now have what I believe is one of the best Surf Clubs in Australia. Over the years I have spoken about our future looking bright with our lifesaving, education, competition, JAG and finances always on the improve and this year is no different. I wish all members the very best for the coming season.

Wanda Presentation night

2014 - 2015

Wanda SLSC Special Awards On Friday the 29th of May Wanda SLSC showcased the best of what Wanda had to offer in surf lifesaving, competition, education and all the other aspects of our surf club at the annual presentation night.

“C.V Forshaw Trophy”

Most Outstanding Instructor

Most Consistent Member: Brett Furniss

Brett Furniss and Sam Axiotis

Trophy Donor: The Forshaw Family The venue was our very own newly rebuilt Founders Room and it was befitting the occasion as it provided a spectacular stage for our members to be recognised for their excellent work toward helping our community and also the betterment of Wanda SLSC. The event was very well attended by our members and friends of Wanda which included Sutherland Shire councillors Kevin Schreiber, Scott Williams and Tracy Cook as well as Eleni Petinos, the State Member for Miranda and the NSW Minister for the Environment, Minister for Heritage and Assistant Minister for Planning, The Honourable Mark Speakman who, as always, are warmly welcomed within our great club. The awards that were presented on the night exemplified Wanda’s

continual commitment to excellence in all aspects of surf lifesaving. This is no less personified than in our C.V. Forshaw trophy winner for 2015, Brett Furniss who has demonstrated his dedication to improving our club with his work as the Director of Education, and serving on the Building Committee and on the Board of Directors. I’m sure you will all agree that Brett is a worthy winner of the trophy. The presentation night as always served as a timely reminder that while the new building and Founders Room is integral to securing the financial future of the club, the strength of Wanda is in its people…. The members. It is the work of the members which continues to grow and improve Wanda and make the building of the new Founders

Room possible. The new Founders Room will now be able to be used as a focal point to continue to build on the positive culture we have at Wanda.

Open Lifesaver of the Year

To all our award winners we congratulate you on your achievement and encourage you to continue with your work in growing Wanda SLSC into one of the finest surf lifesaving clubs in Australia. To our members who did not receive an award at the presentation night, we send you the message that your efforts and contribution to our organisation is no less valued than our award winners. All friends and members of Wanda are welcome and we look forward to having your involvement in the upcoming season; no matter what form that participation may take.

Patron's Message Well it does not feel as if it was two years ago that we had a Special General Meeting to accept the idea putting plans out to tender to get costing of building extensions to our club.

As you read this message you should be proud of the results. I feel that we are the envy of the other Bate Bay clubs. My thanks go out to all of those members who put in some effort to make the vision come through. Now that we have it, I hope that all members appreciate it and play their part in looking after it in the future.

10

More importantly, it was good to see an improvement in our patrolling and as I am writing this message I am looking forward to see our ranking in the Sydney Branch. In saying this, those who know me, know that good is not is not good enough, I still see blemishes in our patrolling - we can be more observant and attentive on

patrolling and our patrol captains should recognize signs of boredom creeping in and take action to avoid it. It is good to see our award members are. It would be nice to see more members step up to train squads and train another each year. I know through experience the satisfaction one gets to see their squad pass their exam, especially if they have achieved a high standard. In regards to the competition side of our club, we have dropped in our ranking slightly as the big money clubs rise to the top. Things I like to see in this area are: Effort, Friendship & Loyalty. There are only 3 medals given out and 6 placings taken in point scores. Our results are covered by other officers of our club in this report. Believe me most competitors in races don’t win accolades but we

should be happy to see them try hard then shake hands with their fellow competitors (Sportsmanship).

It would not be me if I did not have a whinge!!! This time again it’s with the association. Over the past five years or so we have seen the movement of the Australian Championships put back 2 or 3 weeks, coinciding with Anzac Day Eve, as well as lengthening the competition season for most members. It also eats into the season of other sports. We must ask - are they organizing the Championships for the Members, Sponsors, Local Councils or Competition? Looking forward to seeing you on the beach next season.

Director of Administration Report It is my pleasure to present to you the 69th Annual Report and Financial Statements of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Inc.

The start of the year began with a new Club Captain and the immediate focus was on restoring our lifesaving reputation.

to see the calibre of those who stood up to be counted.

Soon to follow was a realisation that a few of our Competition Section Leaders were not going to fulfil their obligations together with the resignations of both office staff after many years of dedicated service.

In the competition arena you could not help but notice the work that Greg Pierce, Ken Smith and Dean McMahon contributed. Together with Scott Benson, Tate Wilkins and Jock Campbell they made sure that our performances were top class and the club should be proud of remaining in the top three at State level. The last minute installation of Jeff Brown as team manger had us heading in the right direction at Aussies, but even the talents of Charlie and Donna needed a bit more time to make the team capable of a top ten finish. I have no doubt they will achieve this feat next year.

As most of my committee years without the help of paid staff, my natural reaction was to begin relying on our best volunteers to keep the club rolling along and it was pleasing

From a club management point of view, Paul Auglys stepped up and headed a new sub-committee that was originally formed by Mark Sargeant. My deputy Tony Holland

However relations soon became strained as multiple meetings for building approvals added to the pressure of enforcing new hard-line patrol procedures and the patience of our members was tested from having to operate out of converted shipping containers.

Possible Attendance Apology 11

As the year went on, my R&R commitments built and I was relieved to add Alex Johnson to our administration staff. Alex has added her own expertise to our monthly newsletters and has been most professional in her assistance to Anita, Graham and myself. I am grateful for the support she has received from our members, particularly Lizzie and Carol. Margaret Ryall has recently joined us to assist with the Sutherland to Surf and I expect that she’ll also receive the same friendly support. I’m genuinely shattered that I cannot continue with this role next year due to some tragic circumstances at my work, but I will continue to offer my assistance anywhere I can.

On reflection I can’t imagine the stress that I have put on my family and work colleagues as I took on a number of additional jobs like refereeing R&R at the State Championship and coordinating the R&R area at Sydney Branch Carnivals. I can only ask that more of our members become involved in this great club. Despite all I’ve put into this place, I always feel that I have derived more out of it.

Gordon McKirdy Director of Administration

Facilities Director Report Construction of the Clubhouse is now finally complete and thanks to the hard work of the Building Committee (Anita Pryke, Mitchell Pryke, Brett Furniss, Trevor Elliott and Mark Sargeant) we have a Surf Club that is the envy of all others and can sustain us into the future.

Just before the build was completed, Sarge stood down from his position as Facilities Director. I would like to thank him for all of his hard work and for leaving the Club in such a fantastic position. Sarge also worked with Bernie Cohen of Essential Certifiers Liverpool to sign off on the building, saving the club over $15,000. Many thanks, Bernie. Now that the majority of the building work is complete our focus turns to finalising the décor of the Founders Room and completing the changes to the Boat, IRB and Board and Ski shed. In April Cara Woods was appointed as our new Bar and Functions Manager and Mitch Palmer as her assistant. After a lot of hard work and some teething issues, the bar is now operational on Sundays for members and their guests. Requests to hire the Founders Room for functions are pouring in and we are in great shape to meet revenue targets. Over the coming months we will be installing a new point of sale system and also be making some minor changes to the bar to ensure the service we offer is of the highest standard. In addition we will be making some improvements to the audio visual system and refreshing our furniture, photographs and other memorabilia to ensure that the Founders Room meets the needs of all our members whilst not detracting from our ability to hire it externally.

The building works have also vastly improved the facilities available to all our members. The relocation of the gym has been a great success and patronage is way up. The fresh air and natural light certainly makes a difference and I would like to thank Stick (Rod Holdsworth) for all the work he has put in getting the place back up and running. At the time of writing this report the ice bath was nearing completion, the Nippers had just finished relocating their equipment to their new storage area, work had just commenced on building the new board and ski racks and the new access control system was just about to be commissioned. Once completed the IRB area will be extended and then our surf boats can return to the boat shed. A lot has been achieved in the last 12 months and I would like to thank all members for their continued patience and support while we finalise the building works. I am sure this coming season will be one of the best in Wanda’s proud history. Regards

Paul Auglys Facilities Director

Building Committee Report WANDA BUILDING COMMITTEE:

Stage 2 Building Works Completed. There was a concept started in 1981 when the then members decided the club house should reflect the proud Wanda tradition and be improved for a growing club and its members. There was a realization that the club would become too small for the future. Fast forward 20 years and Stage One of this realization was planned and enacted to accommodate surf equipment and change rooms downstairs and a tenant upstairs. In February 2013 the roof to the Founders Room was partially removed by severe storms which brought forward Stage Two planning and the decision was made to investigate design and cost. The Wanda Building Committee was formed. After approval from the Wanda SLSC membership the architect firm Artas was engaged to deliver drawing to the new Founders Room with a brief relating to the Stage One completed section of the building. The brief included expansion of the Founders Room over the complete east / west perimeter of the building, expansion of the verandah over the complete east / west perimeter, clear span to both areas, new central bar and kitchen facility, new bathrooms

and access stairs and a wide use of glass. Downstairs was to include a new Gym, office and girls’ change / WC room. Addition of a new caretaker’s room and widening to provide a kitchenette and ensuite. Surf School and storage added.

Tenders were requested once the members were given an opportunity to discuss the plans presented and options discussed. These tenders came in at about $2.8 million April 2014. The successful tender was with the builders Intrec. Prior to signing Contracts with the builder a “Post tender close, Value management Tender Analysis” was commissioned to reduce cost and bring the budget in line with the $1.5 million (borrowing) approved by Wanda SLSC membership. This was revised twice and excluded, for example, Set plasterboard ceilings. Cost reduction was to $2.289 million. Work commenced on the building demolition as a “Letter of Intent” to sign the Contract had been agreed between Wanda SLSC and Intrec. Demolition commenced 15th September 2014. Various problems with securing a loan left the builder exposed as the building

works proper commenced without a signed Contract. Intrec made the decision to place orders and engage sub-contractors never-theless. Contracts were signed on the 9th November 2014. Initial programming had the building finished at the end of January. This had to be struck from the Contract due to the delay. Timing was revised to mid February and included within the Contract. Various weather delays forced a revision of the program and the decision by the WBC was to focus on the upstairs area for completion ASAP. Estimates for weather and wind plus material processing through Christmas delayed delivery of the project by two months. The brief from the WBC to Intrec was “to take a little more time and finish it well”. There was a minimum of disruption to the kiosk who were able to continue running for the majority of the building works with disruption to business for two months only. There was no disruption to Fitness First due to building works.

Overall, the project ran to budget, even though there were 36 variations of contract costing a total of $149,327 (not all these variations were approved or completed). These items did not impact building work or the budget specified by the Wanda SLSC membership approval. All works including variations are within the budget for the build. The largest variation was including R11 tiling to the downstairs area which had been taken out of the original tender but would be required for occupancy and certification. It is my opinion that the members of

Wanda have received a significant build on a tight budget. For example consider that all Structural steel members both internally and externally have been hot dip galvanized. These are elements in the build which could have commanded a higher Contract Tender Price. Reflect that the Stage One build cost $2 million 10 years ago. The builder also completed work that would have not otherwise been included in the tender and should have generated a variation, but did not. For example the use of “comfort” glass other than standard 10mm specified. ( significant )

Wanda SLSC now have possession of the building and Stage Two is complete. An impressive result as from damage to completion was two years two months I personally would like to thank Wanda SLSC and members for the opportunity to assist in the completion of Wanda Stage 2. I also thank the other members of the WBC for their contribution. To all members past and present, “congratulations”.

Club Captain's Report Well the 2014/15 season has completed with exciting results for Wanda.

I am so pleased to report that after last seasons mixed results the patrols this season were beyond belief. We achieved fantastic results in the Patrol efficiency competition and I must congratulate all patrol members and especially the patrol captains for their efforts during the season. I would particularly like to mention the new patrol captains for this season, Jake Macdonald & Clayton West who captained Patrol 2, Lydia Allen – Patrol 4 (who transferred in from Dickys Beach) and Michael Bonnici - Patrol 3 who I believe would have to be one of the youngest patrol captains in Sydney Branch at just 17 years of age. Michael’s patrol was inspected 3 times during the season by Sydney Branch officials and his patrol obtained maximum points on all occasions – a fantastic effort. Michael’s patrol was recognized at the awards night by being awarded the Patrol of the Year. The other group of members who deserve recognition are the U14’s who obtained their SRC awards this season. I was so impressed with this group of boys and girls on patrol.

Their attendance and demeanor on patrol can’t be faulted. The patrol format we now have in place will serve us well into the future seasons. Our education director Brett Furniss has, as in previous years, done a sterling job in guiding our candidates through the mire of education. Brett has spent countless hours teaching and examining candidates in the district and has in place a positive plan for next season to work on upskilling our patrol members in special awards which will serve them well on the beach and in life. On the competition side I must congratulate both the junior and senior clubs on their efforts this season. Both the JAG and senior club managed top 3 positions in the State Titles, a worthy effort, as well as great efforts at the Australian Titles up against clubs who spend a lot of money for competitors and equipment. Chris Fox and his coaches can be commended on the untold hours spent coaching and organizing teams which showed at the important carnivals at the latter stages of the season.

Our building committee has done a tremendous job this season spending untold hours in meetings leading us through turbulent times to deliver to us a truly magnificent clubhouse. Our new clubhouse will be the flagship of clubhouses for many years and will provide the income to support our endeavours going forward. Looking to the future it is important to recognize our strengths and weaknesses and be able to adapt to challenges. We must be able to identify and take advantage of our opportunities. With our new club we have ensured our long term viability and have placed the framework internally in our club to take us forward. In conclusion, I call on all Wanda members to jump on board and participate in the future direction and decision making of the club, BUT the input must be properly channeled as at times there is too much unproductive conflict which needs to be stopped - it’s going to be a wild but worthy ride!

JAG Chairperson's Report

2014 - 2015

JAG Age Managers

BL AC KH AL L

The 2014/15 season at Wanda Nippers has come to an end. It has been a magnificent year - over 450 Nippers on the beach every Sunday for 17 weeks. They learnt about the beach and surf, ran, waded, made friends, swam, paddled, laughed - and definitely looked like the bright future of surf life saving we want them to be.

IA N

Wanda Nippers was run in challenging circumstances - no clubhouse for the whole season. In the end, it didn’t even seem to matter - kids, parents and volunteers thrived regardless. I thank you for your patience - and we can all look forward to a fantastic clubhouse next season. Last year we wrote a 3 Year Plan to: 1. Create a stronger Surf Life Saving education program & culture 2. Improve the Wanda experience for non-competitive & surf tentative kids 3. Build on our famous sporting foundations – for stronger team performances We started many new programs & will look to make them even better in year 2. This year’s highlights include:

1. L IFE SAVING AND SURF EDUCATION

18

Aside from weekly programs with Age Managers, a new surf education team - Potty, Jo and Karen - worked with age groups to expand our Nippers’ lifesaving knowledge and skills. Congratulations to almost all our u14s (and a few u13s) who gained their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and started regular patrols with Wanda. We are most proud of Jed Buckley (winner) and Sarah Brown (finalist) in the Sydney Branch Junior Life Saver of the Year competition.

To help build the confidence of Nippers in the water, we introduced the Surf Confidence Program this year - a water area with special coaches and water safety. A huge thanks to Georgie Woods and Emily Rohr who kindly gave up their time on Sundays to help the kids. We can’t wait to make this program bigger and better next year.

The importance of volunteers at Wanda Nippers can never be overstated. Each Sunday we have well over 100 volunteers making it all happen – that’s 1 in every 2 mums & dads. A hard working, respectful and friendly team of volunteers, who are a pleasure to work with. Overall this season the response has been excellent – but I do want to make special mention of Shannon Dixon – our tireless, professional & committed Club Secretary & Communications officer. Give her a high 5 & smile when you see her to show your appreciation.

Jock Athletic partnership

Wanda Nippers formed a new a partnership with Jock Athletic this season for fitness and beach training. Jock Campbell and team are some of the best athletic coaches in the business - an absolute asset to Wanda Nippers. n

R&R with JD

Wanda Nippers had an R&R team for the first time in many years in 2014/15. Six u14 girls formed the team, under the guidance of Wanda Nippers life member John Douglas. They did it in absolute style too finishing 4th at State Age, and 5th at State Open. Well done to the girls. n

n

C ompetition Excellence thanks to Dean McMahon

Surf sports is a significant part of Wanda Nippers - and this year we excelled beyond expectations. Nippers attended a range of carnivals throughout the season but to cap it all off, our team finished second overall at the State Age championships. Our U14’s went on to the Aussie Youth Championships where Chloe Gentle (2km beach run) & Nathan Rohr (surfing) won Gold & Brooke Dixon took out the Bronze medal in Tube Rescue. We can put this down to talented, hardworking Nippers, and Dean’s dedicated coaching team including Rossi, Potty, Jock & Paul.

Each year we bid farewell to the u14s, as they move on to patrols and competition with the senior club. This year’s group are fine young men and women, almost all who have become volunteer surf life savers - a credit to themselves, the club and families. Many have been with Wanda since a young age and we will certainly miss them. Being chosen as Club Captain at Wanda this year was an amazing honour. I am very proud to have been chosen by such great mates and my mentors at the club.

I would firstly like to congratulate all the kids who have attended Nippers this year and had a go. We have had a tough year at Wanda considering we didn’t have a clubhouse but in the usual Wanda spirit we made the best of it. 2nd place at the State championships being the highlight. I would love to thank our Age Managers Tony Rohr, Pat Managreve, Julie Adams and Pauline Brown for putting up with the

purple caps all these years. They have taught us everything we need to know over these years and I have made lifelong friends through the 7 years that I have been at Wanda. We had the time of our lives at the U/14s camp up at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast. We may have had the worst weather ever (a cyclone), but everybody that went made it worthwhile. I want to say a huge thank you to all my coaches over the years Dean McMahon, Ian Ross, Dave Phillpot, Kenny Smith and Greg Pierce. It is because of these coaches that I have become who I am today, not just In Surf Lifesaving, but in everyday life. They have shown me you don’t have to win gold to be an important part of the club and they have always been encouraging and supportive. Getting my SRC and patrolling has been the biggest change/challenge

have been possible without some very important people.

This season I had the honour of being chosen as the Club Captain. I had lots of fun watching and helping all the Nippers just starting an amazing journey.

I started Nippers in the U6s and I have loved every minute of it, from the hard training sessions to sitting under the Wanda tent in the pouring rain at State. I have made so many friendships that I will cherish for years.

24

This year Wanda went extremely well at State, coming second on an overall point score. This would not

Firstly, I would like to thank all the water safety that gave up all their time to come to Nippers, training and carnivals to keep us safe in the water. Secondly, thank you to all the mums and dads who brought us down every week, every training session and every carnival rain, hail or shine. Lastly, and my biggest thank you goes to the coaches who have guided us all the way through our Nipper years. So thank you so much Dean McMahon, Ian Ross, Dave Phillpot and right back to the U8s wade training with Ken Smith. The U14s trip away was like icing on the cake. It was a great way to end my Nipper years, celebrating with all my friends. We had so much fun in Queensland, at Wet ‘n’ Wild,

this year and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you to everyone on our patrol for making us feel so welcome. I would also like to mention the experience I have gained from the Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year award. Camp was such a great experience and I got to meet a lot of amazing kids who were really passionate about Surf Life Saving. I came away with lots of great ideas and am really keen to hopefully get some of them up and running at Wanda. Finally I would just like to say that Nippers doesn’t end at the U/14s. Myself and quite a few of our group are really keen to be involved next year and beyond. I know I still have a lot I can learn from my coaches and hopefully even some skills that I can pass on to the younger Nippers.

Jed Buckley

shopping and just having fun together as a group. We had lots of fun fundraising, so thanks to everyone that bought a snow cone!! This trip would not have been successful without our Age Manager, Julie Adams and our assistant Age Manager, Pauline Brown. Also thanks for putting up with us every week. Our U14s year would not have been the same without you. I hope all the younger Nippers stay till the end and get to have all the great experiences including the trip away. Finally, I want to thank the club for giving me such great opportunities and I encourage all the young Nippers and Nipperettes to continue on this amazing journey all the way to the U14s. I look forward to seeing you all in senior club.

Abby Adams

Well I think this season can be labelled ‘year of the shoredump’. I’ve never seen Cronulla’s surf as bad as this season which made it testing for our Nippers but we found a way to get through. With a shoredump every Sunday it made it tough for training and Sunday racing but you all gave it your best shot which is all we can ask!

Sunday & as usual the committed group of Water Safety helpers who make it all possible. Without the “orange army” surf races wouldn’t happen, so once again a big, big thanks from me. See you all on the beach next season.

A big thanks to all those who helped out with the setup & packup each

JAG Head Coach report At the start of April 2014 I asked all the kids to set themselves a goal for the season ahead. No matter how big or small that goal was I am confident many of them reached it. We had individuals in the water and on the beach who reached their goals and teams that did the same.

ALL AGE BOARD TEAM

My report is not about naming individuals or teams for their great results as they can be seen elsewhere in this book, but about how each and every athlete raced to the best of their ability every time they hit the water and how we trained to race. The club had some fantastic results throughout the season from Sydney water, Branch and every carnival in between, but what I saw on the 3

VISIT FROM ECKSTEINS

days at State was unbelievable! To finish 2nd overall was an outstanding result, but the attitude of these young athletes was just as pleasing. As coaches we can train these kids as much as we want to make sure they are fit, but I think more importantly we can make them mentally strong and smart in the surf and help guide them in the right direction away from the surf to be better people.

Myself and the rest of the coaches would like to thank every athlete, parent and sibling for their continued dedication and commitment towards Wanda and support of the coaches. Looking forward to a safe and stronger 15/16.

JAG Water Safety Coordinator Report

Surf education was a real focus for Wanda Nippers this year. ID AV D T O LP IL PH

At Wanda we are so fortunate to have a fantastic and dedicated water safety group made up of Nipper parents, former Nippers and former Nipper parents, as well as our next batch of budding life savers from the U14s.

JAG Surf Life Saving Coordinator report

U11 SURF ED

This was our first season of running a specialised surf education program each Sunday morning. This was in addition to what age groups do with their Age Managers each week. With the help of Karen Ross and Jo Handforth we covered First Aid, CPR, signals and tube rescue. Thank you to all for your help in donning the orange and providing water safety each and every Sunday, at carnivals, club activities and training. It was great that we always had more than our minimum numbers to hold these events. Without your support and dedication we can’t enjoy the activities that we do as a club. Thanks also to those new members especially those with Nippers in the U8 and U9 who got their bronzes this year. It is so important as one generation moves on and the next come through that we continue to maintain our numbers.

The commitment, energy and support you give to water safety is something all at the club are extremely thankful for. You make the water an actively safe environment for one and all and that’s something you should all be proud of. A special thanks to Purnell Motors our long term Water Safety Sponsor who have been supporting Wanda since 1999.

John Brown

The program involved rotating age groups each week, starting with the Under 7’s who learnt basic recovery positions - up to the under 13’s who were learning more advanced first aid and preparing them for their SRC course that they will be learning as they head for the under 14’s . Karen took the CPR, Jo tube rescue

and I did signals and first aid. We encouraged the Age Managers to get involved, as well as any parents that were watching from the sidelines. From the reaction we got from the kids it was fair to say that most really enjoyed what they were learning. Being our first season it was a learning curve for us as much as the kids. We listened and learned from feedback that we got from parents and Age Managers as the season progressed. I’d also like to congratulate all our new Nipper SRC holders and patrolling members. Each season Karen and I take the Under 14’s through their SRC so they can

become lifesavers and do patrols down at Wanda on weekends throughout summer. This year we had a great group of eager young guys keen to become lifesavers. Within the group, we had Jed Buckley and Sarah Brown who ended up excelling themselves in junior lifesaving and doing the club proud with their achievements. Next season we aim to continue with the surf education of all Nippers to help make Wanda a stronger surf lifesaving club which is what it is all about.

JAG Age Managers Reports U7 GIRLS

The ‘red caps’ had a great season this year. We welcomed back a lot of Girls the girls from last season and also had quite a few new Nippers join the U7 girls this year.

U7

U6 GIRLS

The purple caps are certainly an active and energetic group of girls. Girls It was wonderful to watch them make new and different friends each week.

U6

The girls thoroughly enjoyed the proficiency water activities and their trepidation at the beginning of the season was only temporary. They loved the ‘wash out’ and spent most Sunday mornings getting very wet and sandy. We have some fantastic sand sprinters, who I am sure will emerge to be future champions. The girls had a wonderful time at Gunnamatta and were very capable on the board after a bit of practise. They all excelled in their first proficiency. The girls had many opportunities to learn about surf awareness and beach safety. The parental support each week was amazing. We had ‘regular’ helpers who would take on extra responsibilities, and then an abundance of parents who were happy to continually lose in tug of war, or stand in the water for the morning with hoops or buckets. Thank you to Brock, Scott, Colin and Karen whose energy levels matched the girls each week! Brock’s activities were always very creative and gradually introduced the girls to the surf. Watching Brock squeeze through the hoops each week was also a comical highlight. Brock’s Golden Thongs were a very special award and were won by a different girl each week.

30

U6 BOYS

We had many girls achieve their 100%. We hope to see all the purple caps back next year to build on their water confidence, surf awareness and of course to keep having fun at the beach.

Christie Considine Well a first year under our belt for the junior life guards in training, as Boys well as the Age Managers and the parents. What a learning curve for all. We saw a few tears, some whinging but most of all laughter and smiles could be heard all over the shire from this great group of young men.

U6

It started off rocky, with the three Age Managers Jenny, Glen and I all new at it. After a few lessons, we hit our straps and the only thing holding us back was the shore break at Wanda. The boys were split about 50 50 between those confident and those water hesitant, but after some fun games, all of our young men made it through the competency with flying colours, some going twice just for kicks. It has been a pleasure to not only see the friendships and social aspect of the boys’ interactions with each other and the managers improving every week, but the confidence of those more hesitant grow – always the highlight of my day. The lessons set down for the boys such as slip slop slap, stranger danger and the safe zones of the beach were recited by all whenever we quizzed them.

We had speed in boys like Josh who seemed to win most of our races on the beach but to all the boy’s credit they never gave up with Jimmy, Ryan and Luke all taking out the title of flags champ for the day. Each boy tried his hardest to improve each and every week, with sportsmanship displayed that went above and beyond boys of 6 years of age. It showed the young men these boys will grow into. A special mention to our Age Manager mentor Tim, for his advice and ready ear whenever we needed a bit of insight or guidance, as well as the rest of the club for their support. So from the Age Managers, the boys and parents – thank you for making us all feel welcome and involved. To the parents that helped week in week out with everything from the BBQ (which the weather gods gave us the day off), to beach set up (yep, it rained and we got sent home), to helping with game set up and getting into the water. To the team leaders that were there whenever we asked without hesitation – myself, Jenny and Glen all wish to say thank you. It is so much more enjoyable to the boys and to us to have your support. It has been a pleasure and an enormous amount of fun for the Age Managers of the u6 boys to guide these young men around the beach watching them grow in confidence and awareness of the beach life at Wanda and we look forward to next year and hope that you all return to do it all again.

Tim Noonan

The girls started off a little timidly, but over the summer we saw their beach and surf skills develop. They gained a greater awareness of the water and beach. We were lucky to spend time getting an understanding of the impact of rubbish on our beaches through the CSIRO, spending time in the life-guard tower and getting an understanding of what a real surf lifesaver is and does through spending time with the ‘big kids’ on patrol. Several of the highlights of the season included: Gunnamatta Bay and getting the chance to go on a board and swim out to the older Nippers and learning how to pass the baton for the beach sprints; the weekly Beanie bear awards; the mini-competition days and the presentation day eating cupcakes. We want to thank the U14 girls and boys for spending some time with our U7 girls this year as this interaction lead to greater confidence for the girls. Congratulations to all those Nippers who completed the season and to those that gained 100%, 200% and 300% awards. A big thank you to the parents for helping out this year, especially in the water and having fun relay races with the girls, as the smiles on their faces say it all. We look forward to seeing you on the beach in 2015/16.

Kaylene, Kylie & Michael

It has been an absolute joy to see the u7 boys improve from week to week. Give Boys or take, we had 33 boys every week and they all excel in different ways.

U7

Each week, we split our time up with the boys in certain areas and focussed a lot on games. They were taught them how to listen by playing games with the whistle where they could only respond when we blow it. We also practised baton changing by incorporating it into games. The boys also achieved their water proficiency and enjoyed this experience, most very comfortable with the water. This year we chose Riley Blacker as our Nipper of the Week, as he always tried his hardest and listened to instructions. We are very excited for the year ahead when the boys can start competing, as we have many strong competitors in our team.

Santie, Luke and Rod What an exciting season 2014/15 has been for the pink caps. I have Girls thoroughly enjoyed every Sunday at Nippers. Your smiling faces continue to surprise me. As the season has progressed so has your enthusiasm and confidence.

U8

Learning the wade was a little scary for some, but you all gave it a go and made me very proud each week. Thank you to Kurtis Smith for running the weekly training session, your knowledge, experience and willingness to help out is a great asset to Wanda Nippers. This being our first year for attending carnivals, all the girls that participated showed great sportsmanship. The 4-Way carnival at North Cronulla was our first major carnival which became a very exciting day. The Wanda u8

U7 BOYS

girls made a clean sweep of the gold medals on offer that day. 1st Flags Keira V, 1st Sprint Keira V and 1st Beach relay team Consisting of Keira V, Grace S, Hollie A and Lily C. The other major carnival we attended was the Sydney Branch carnival at Maroubra beach. All the girls tried their best and made me very proud to be their Age Manager. Keira V won Gold in the Flags. This was a brilliant effort in very hot conditions. Congratulations to the 100% attendance girls Giselle A, Alexandra C, Harper C, Jade D, Abigail H, Imogen L, Chloe M and Grace S. I would like to thank all the parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends for taking the time to get you to Nippers on a Sunday, carnivals and extra training days. A special mention must go to Imogen Lammers who attended 15 of the possible 15 Nipper days this season. Imogen is always very enthusiastic at Nippers, loves a chat, asks lots of questions and always has some important information to enlighten us with. Again another thank you to all the parents for helping out during the season on BBQ duty, set up duty, water safety, marshalling, carrying the pink bucket, toilet trips and officiating on championship days. Without your help Nippers on a Sunday would not happen. Thank you to the parents that completed their Bronze Medallion, Age Managers and Officials courses throughout the season your involvement is very much appreciated but also necessary to run the Nipper activities each week. To my assistants Nathan, Geoff, Stefan, and Sean. You are all brilliant, I could not do my job without you guys beside me every Sunday. Next season will be a major transition for the girls. Two more Surf Lifesaving disciplines will be

31

U8 GIRLS

introduced - surf swim and board. It will be a challenging season for all the girls, any new skill learned requires an open mind, hard work and patience. Next season the girls will also need the continued support and encouragement of their parents. As Age Manager I am confident in all of our Pink cap girls abilities and I believe they will thrive and develop next season just as they have throughout 2014/15. I look forward to seeing you all in October ready for another fun season.

Katie Spinner Thank you for a wonderful season with the Under 8 boys. After two years of largely being restricted Boys to the sand activities, it was great to see the enthusiasm of so many of the boys stepping up to the embracing the wade event plus attending carnivals for the first time.

U8

The wade events each week really challenged the boys with the varied conditions. We could see that it was beginning to teach them to read the surf conditions, whether it is a shallow or deep wade, diving under waves, dolphin diving, running or swimming. It was also great to see some of the boys learning to body surf the waves to shore. Whilst the season started off with perfect weather, unfortunately there were a few average days in between. The majority of the boys weathered the storm and had a great time. Numerous boys also began to experience and see the value in midweek training at Gunnamatta Bay.

32

The boys battled hard at the Interclub and Branch Carnivals. Unfortunately at both Carnivals the wade was cancelled which was our event

to show the other clubs our true strength. The boys will show Wanda’s strength is in the water next year. All the boys undertook their surf awareness courses incorporating CPR. This basic knowledge will assist their life skills (i.e. what do I do if a friend gets hurt/ injured) and hopefully become life savers of the future. Congratulation to the Boys receiving 100%, 200% and 300% awards which is an outstanding achievement, given the changing conditions each session and year. A huge thank you to Michael Baker and Dean Theodosiou who assisted during the year. Also a big thanks to the parents who helped at the Carnivals and with the setup and BBQ. Without everyone’s support Wanda would not be the club it is. Next year is another step up where the boys enter the water events (Board, swim etc) so please keep the training up in winter as this will put the boys in a good position for their proficiency swim in September. Look forward to see you again next session in our new club house.

Mick Kay What an exciting year it has been for our girls. The group of girls we Girls had at Nippers this season were all truly amazing. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again! We have a great bunch of girls who are all friends. Yes they have their ups & downs, though when it comes to working together & pulling together as a team, they really pull through. They don’t like to let one another down. This is a fantastic trait to have. They all continue to encourage one another & push each other to try harder.

U9

U8 BOYS

This year the girls stepped up from the wade to an ocean swim & board. The ocean component wasn’t for everyone, though they all gave it a go, more often than not. We saw the continuation of the beach sprints & flags, which all the girls enjoyed. I can see that a lot of our girls will continue to push themselves next year in the U10’s.They have learnt so much this year & all the knowledge & training from this year will be further extended next year. Next year will be even more challenging for some girls. I believe that if we all continue to work together & encourage & support the girls (whether it be: beach or water), we will have some amazing results. Results in that the girls will be achieving things that they didn’t think they could do. We will see a very friendly competitive U10 girls team in the 2015/2016 season. Their individual passion for Nippers is what keeps us all working together as a team. We have received great feedback / comments from officials at many carnivals about our U9 girls. They are so well mannered, attentive, competitive and friendly & have great sportsmanship. This is so pleasing to hear. It makes me feel proud & the girls should also feel proud. Thank you to all the U9 girls who helped make the 2014 / 2015 season an awesome one: Chloe Babister, Tahli Bailey, Ava Cahill, Tahli Christensen, Jacqueline Cooke, Isabella Cox, Alita Crossley, Ellie Darlington, Lilika Frangelopoulos, Tara Gentle, Talia Goffet, India Hulbert, Emily Hunter, Sahara Ingram, Christie Kannengiesser, Ara Kotsis, Analisa Mazzucco, Ashlyn McKenzie, Jade McLachlan, Ella Nixon, Leilani O`Brien, Leah Pilkington, Ruby Pinfold, Ella Roberts, Caitlin Shields,

U9 GIRLS

Indhi-Chai Sleeman, Chelsea Sutton, Jade Tattam, Katie Tegal, Maya Valor Sueno, Charlotte Whalan & Madeleine Wyse . Each & every one of you has contributed to the U9 Girls team in a massive way & you have made Wanda proud. A Very Big Thank You to Andrew for helping out as an Assistant Age Manager for the whole season & thanks to Shane, our Co Age Manager & our other Assistant Age Manager HB for your help & support at the beginning of the season. A huge thank you must also be given to our Water Safety, Coaches and the Wanda Committee. Thank you to all the parents, carers & grandparents, who came down on a Sunday. Thank you to those who took on extra duties. Eg:. Obtaining their Bronze Medallion, helping with training, setting up & pull downs, BBQ duties, officiating at Carnivals and other general duties on any given Sunday (or Saturday). Without your help, Nippers couldn’t happen. It has been a pleasure to see all the girls give their best during the 2014/2015 season. See you all back at Wanda Beach for the 2015/2016 season.

Cassandra Kotsis Another year has passed and so much has happened. We started Boys the year with 25 boys which included around 8 new boys. Boys travelled from near and far to be there every week and we thank you and your parents for getting you there.

U9

This year saw the introduction of a full ocean swim and board paddle. I must admit, I didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised

when every single proficient boy had a go week one and all made it back to shore without assistance. That definitely set a positive tone for the rest of the year. The first 4 weeks, Mother Nature was definitely kind to us which also gave an opportunity for boys to gain further confidence in the water. It was also great to see those boys not as confident use the water confidence area to improve their skills. This was definitely a great initiative by the club and I hope it continues on next year. As usual there was great competition for those boys who were a little more competitive both in water and on the beach. Sprints and flags was always competitive, as week to week we had different winners and place getters. Garvyn continued to improve week to week showing us why he is one of our top flaggers. I suppose our most pleasant surprise was to see the emergence of Liam as our top sprinter. It definitely bolstered our stocks. We looked forward to seeing what Fletcher could do this year and he didn’t let us down. It was always exciting to watch him swim and board with such confidence. It definitely gave the rest of his team something to chase. The boys proved time and time again what a great bunch they are, whether it be a normal Sunday morning or a carnival. Anton and Ramon, you showed that with training and effort improvement does happen. Fletcher, your coolness in competition for a 9 year old is something some adults never have. Jayson, at State you showed us what determination is and wanting to do the best for your mates. The sprint relay team showed

U9 BOYS

you don’t need to be the fastest individual just the fastest TEAM. Lastly, a big congrats to all the boys who participated week to week and I hope you enjoyed it as much as Gerard, Brad and myself did. Also to all those that took medals and placings in all carnivals and especially those that saved their best for state. We are all very proud of your efforts. We look forward to next season and seeing you all return.

Darren Rossen What a great season it was for the U10 Girls. The start of the season saw eight Girls new girls join the group. What a great addition they have been! Friendships were quickly made and the girls all showed great support to each other learning new skills and mentoring each other.

U10

Whilst some girls had been hesitant in the water Georgie and Emily showed great support mentoring them and we are pleased to say the girls’ skills have vastly improved along with their confidence. Each and every girl showed great improvement in all areas and this year saw the girls collect a few medals at all carnivals leading up to State, in sprint, flags, sprint relay. Unfortunately the weather has not been on our side for water events at carnivals, but all the weekly training has been great and the girls’ surf skills have greatly improved. This took us to take 5th place at State in the board relay. All girls are to be congratulated for their effort at State and for braving the crazy weather conditions as well! Every girl showed

33

U10 GIRLS

great sportmanship clapping and encouraging each other at the finish of all events. A big thank you to our band of supportive parents that have helped out each week, you have certainly made our jobs easier for your help. Looking forward to seeing many girls return next year for another great season.

Nicki Molloy and Jason Lammers 2014 saw the under 10 boys welcome some new faces to the team – Josh, Boys Joseph, Max D, Noah, Tyler, Ben L, Cooper, Ben N, Lee, Ethan P and Andres - as well as welcoming back Ethan. It was great to see so many new faces, no doubt testament to the reputation that Wanda is building not just for competition but for friendship and having a go. Seeing the boys form a guard of honour for some of the first-timers completing their swim was quite special, and a good indicator of how tight the boys would become over the season.

U10

In another season of sometimes difficult surf, there were always plenty of smiling faces turning up each week ready to expend some energy despite what the elements had to throw at them! From swimming in choppy conditions to learning about CPR and beach safety, the boys were always ready to put in the effort, and even put up with Phil’s penalty runs with good grace!

34

There was plenty of representation at the many carnivals throughout the year and, although the weather conspired to produce some carnival days that would test the patience of most, the boys remained cheery and well behaved as they waited for their events - that in some cases never

came as many were cancelled late in the day. For those carnivals that went ahead there were once again some fantastic results. As well as the local carnivals, Ben S travelled all the way to Cooks Hill to compete in the Classic (coming 3rd in the process, an amazing effort); and Ben S, Ryan, Dylan, Noah and Lachlan competed in the Sydney Water series (with Ryan finishing 4th overall in the water events, another incredible effort). And of course it wouldn’t be State without some drama, with this year delivering some difficult surf conditions. A huge “well done” to all those boys that went out and challenged themselves, giving it a go when many others would have given up. As the boys get older it is great to see their personalities develop, and as they practice in the surf and on the beach it is worth remembering that these are the lifesavers of the future, so it is important to keep up the encouragement and the practice until we start the next season. A big thank you to all those that helped out this year when the call was put out for volunteers, and see you soon at the beach!

Notable results for the year include: 4 way carnival: 2nd individual swim (Ethan P), 1st individual board (Ben S), 3rd individual board (Riley), 2nd individual sprint (Ryan P), 1st swim team, 3rd swim team, 1st board relay (Ben, Ryan and Riley), 2nd board relay (Dylan, Noah and Lachlan), 1st sprint relay (Joe, Dylan, Ryan and Riley), 2nd sprint relay

State: 6th individual board (Ben S), 4th board relay (Ben, Ryan and Noah)

Spiro Veldakis, Phil Webb and Andrew Cole

U10 BOYS

What a great year again from the Under 11 girls. A great group of girls who Girls perform well in the water and sand and always have a great time – such as whilst waiting for their events colouring themselves in Zinc and doing some great gymnastic displays! All girls performed well again this year, unfortunately the weather gods weren’t very nice to us this year and many of the carnivals were cancelled. The girls did well at the Cronulla carnival this year with a number of medals collected and the board team collecting a gold at the Maroubra Carnival. With water activities cancelled for the under 11’s at Branch the girls were able to compete on the beach taking a bronze in the relay.

U11

The girls performed well again this year at State with Tilly taking out a silver medal in the flags. A water medal is still elusive, although the girls did very well, 5th in the swim team and all girls reaching at least the semi-finals for their individual board and swim. Three girls had the opportunity this year to attend the Under 11’s Development camp, all had a great time and were able to display their skills they had learnt doing R&R and safety awareness at Nippers. The girl’s sportsmanship this season was outstanding, they all encouraged each other and the parents should be very proud. I enjoyed being Manager of the Under 11 girls this year and was very proud of each and everyone. I look forward to another great season next season.

Susan Jay

U11 GIRLS

Well that’s another summer that has come and gone, how quick was that? Boys It all started without a clubhouse and we all thought it would be a long season. How wrong were we? The first three weekends were perfect weather to get the boys used to the glass boards. After that, I think that was it for the good weather.

U11

All the usual boys had come back for another season and the few that we lost were replaced and welcomed to create a great team of boys. The boys had some great results during the Sydney Water series then it seemed to turn into the summer of shore dumpers. In January, six of our boys were fortunate enough to attend the U11 Branch Development Camp at Deer Park and they represented Wanda with honour and did us all proud. A big thanks to Brett for chaperoning the boys over that weekend, they all had a ball. As the season rolled on it, the weather gods weren’t too kind to us and it was disappointing there was limited opportunity for the boys to test their skills against the other clubs as they prepared for State. Once again, we told them how small the surf would be at Umina. How wrong we were (again)! Although the water conditions were trying, the Wanda boys are tough and they came away with some great results. The awesome swim team of Jake, Henri, Morgan and (newcomer) Evan earned themselves a Gold and Henri backing it up with an individual swim Silver. Not to be outdone, the boys on the beach also did a great job at flags, after sitting around in the scorching sun, with Josh securing 6th place and Brooky scoring a Silver. Back in the water, the U11 Cameron

A team of Jake, Henri, Josh & Tilly showed them all how to do it with a Gold. All 15 boys did us and themselves proud at State, giving it a go and being rewarded with some great personal achievements. Overall it has been another great season. The boys have all trained hard and become stronger, more confident and enthusiastic and are all really looking forward to next season. As Age Managers, we would like to say a special thank you to all the boys’ parents who help us out each week on the beach, with water safety and BBQ duty (thanks Gary!) and also to the committee for the endless hours that they put into the Club that nobody sees but we reap the benefit of. Last but certainly not least, thank you to Dean McMahon and his board training team for all their hard work with the boys, not only during the Nippers season but also in the off-season too. Keep up the off-season training boys and hope to see you all back on the beach next summer.

Mark Lake & Virginia Sullivan PS. I don’t think State will be at Umina next year as I seem to have most of their beach in my backpack!

Another great year!!! Although the weather didn’t always cooperate Girls the U12 girls always had smiles on their faces. This year we welcomed 3 new girls, Rhiannon, Kyra and Amelia, who all fitted in immediately. Their personalities were infectious and the girls displayed great character in taking on the beach and water events every week.

U12

U11 BOYS

Week in, week out, our girls constantly supported and encouraged each other. They are an absolute joy to look after and are a credit to their families. A few highlights this year included a silver medal for our beachies Sam A, Kayla and Kyra in the sprint relay at the 4 way carnival (with a little help from our U11girls). Also 4 Way gold in the surf teams, board relay and Cameron relay. We had a 4th in the board relay to the team of Gracie, Sam B and Ella at State, an unbelievable individual effort from Gracie at State with a well deserved second in board and third in ironperson. Our swim team of Gracie, Ella, Lara and Lilly also performed well. Not only can Lilly swim, but she also keeps us all entertained with her sense of humour and craziness. Another effort to be proud of was Kayla’s 5th place at State in flags. Well done Kayla. All of our girls deserve a mention. Amber’s swimming improved all year. Hayley’s board improved out of sight and Laura’s effort each week and never giving up deserves a medal in itself. The comraderie and support the girls had for each other this year, especially at State, was something to be proud of. We wouldn’t have had such a great year without the help of my assistants John Archer and Todd McLachlan (the ugliest secretary I’ve ever seen). Thanks for your help guys, and to all the parents for your support throughout the year. Your help with either beach set-up or a torturous shift on the BBQ is always much appreciated. I hope the girls had as much fun as I did this year and I look forward to seeing them all back next year.

U12 GIRLS

Although we lost a few long termers to other pursuits in the U12s Boys this year, our losses were replaced by even more newbies - it was great to see the familiar faces so accepting and it was fantastic to watch the new guys form friendships, laughing with and following the more experienced kids - practicing, picking up tips and learning. It was amazing how quickly these talented and brave boys picked up the basics, persisting and continuing to improve week after week in some extremely challenging conditions.

U12

Yet again we had to contend with some challenging weather and surf conditions that somehow seemed to pinpoint specific days and resulted in the the Ohana Carnival and Sydney Branch Water Events being cancelled. This is the 2nd time in as many years that both of these events have been canned, disrupting the season and impacting our points and selection process. Increasing the pain, incredibly, State Age threatened at times to be a repeat of the last 2 years with many delays, cancellations and changed programs due to the hazardous surf conditions ... but we got there in the end and the Wanda boys enjoyed many successes over the 2-3 days.

36

The weather is a constant issue at Nippers sometimes fantastic, sometimes disappointing and disrupting but always unavoidable. Also unavoidable is the downtime and waiting around that often results from this unpredictability - combine this with seventeen 11-12 year old boys and usually you would have some problems - but not with these kids, each year I am surprised by their good behavior, their manners, their

respect for Pete and I and their overall maturity. Never a fight and always a smile - It’s a huge credit to them and clearly to you guys as parents of such fine young men. Congratulations. There are way too many highlights to list them all but I did want to mention just a few that for a variety of reasons, for me, signify what Nippers is all about: ■■

■■

Benny’s monster wave at the Four Way that resulted in our B Cameron Team beating our A Team in the closest of sprints up the beach. Dane and Jayden’s monumental semi final in the Ironman at State

■■

Nick being rescued, first ever ocean swim, first round Sydney Water .... he came 5th in the Final of the IM an hour later.

■■

Our A & C sprint teams both making the final at State

■■

Zach & Kai high fiving & laughing with each other after dead heating the sprint selection run off.

It was another great season, one of my most rewarding as Age Manager, and competitively one of our most successful seasons ever. Well done lads and thank you.

Chris Dixon Paul & I just wanted to start by thanking all of Girls the girls for another enjoyable and successful Nipper season. It was a slightly more relaxed and socially approach to the Nipper season than previous years and it was clear that you were all enjoying it; even if water safety didn’t quite know what to make of the mass of usually

U13

U12 BOYS

competitive girls, leisurely making their way through around the cans. We had another successful year that all of you should be proud of; from great attendance and participation each week to great performances at competitive events throughout the year and finally capped off by another successful campaign at the State Titles. You girls continue to re-write the Wanda Nipper record books and with one more season of Nippers remaining you’ve already created a great legacy and lifetime of memories that will be the centre of your friendships well beyond Nippers. This season saw a number of new girls and a few girls returning from gap years, which together with the regular group only added to the weekly fun & dynamic’s. This clearly reached its highest point for you all late in the season when you eagerly took on your newest weekly activity - Snow Cone making. It’s fair to say that the combination of ice, sugar syrup and the U13girls is an experience that the club is still adjusting to. Let’s hope that we don’t consume all the fundraising money next year through “taste testing”. Some of our highlights from the season: ■■

Forster Surf Carnival “season kick off” event continuing to grow in popularity; looking forward to the U14’s kick-off.

■■

Sydney Water Carnival successes by all participants.

■■

First wave of girls completing their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and making the transition from Nippers to Life Savers on Patrol.

■■

Addition of Surfing to program and the regular attendance by a core group “dawn patrollers” early each Sunday morning.

U13 GIRLS

■■

State Carnival success and your strong contribution to Wanda’s 2nd placing.

■■

First Surfing gold at Sydney Branch, with Gold and Silver at 4-way carnival.

■■

Reclaiming State Gold in the Board Relay; breaking the Steve Southwell hoodoo.

■■

Beach Relay success with Silver at State and closing the gap on Cronulla throughout the year.

■■

Last, but not least hanging out with you all each week and listening to stories and storytelling that goes on.

We are looking forward to seeing you all back again next year and making U14’s your best year ever and a great finish to your Nippers experience. Thanks also to all parents; your support and assistance on the beach throughout the year and all the work that goes on behind the scenes getting your kids to training, competitions and Nippers each week. Looking forward to seeing you all again next season. Thanks

Paul & Josh The boys have completed the penultimate season as Nippers and what Boys an impressive season it has been. They have gone from being a small bunch of happy go lucky boys to a committed and competitive age group, who have progressed admirably throughout the season.

U13

As we move into this season Ross and I thought our numbers would dwindle again as we knew of a couple of kids who weren’t coming back. It was a great surprise to see

our numbers swell to 18 kids. It was a pleasure to welcome Sam, James, Ronan, Isaac, Wyatt, Riley, Oliver and Lachlan to the Club and age group. Some of the boys travel a fair distance each week to part take in Nippers. We also welcomed back Corey from his injury enforced lay off, Sonny and Tristan. The new and returning boys added to the comradery and team spirit, fitted in quickly and contributed both on the beach and in the water. It was also great to see us go from being the smallest number of competitors in Bate Bay for our age group to the largest number. This increase in number improved competition amongst the boys and with that our results improved as well. Winning medals at 4 way, branch and making finals at State. Great work Luca, Sam and Nath at 4-way silver in the board relay. Luca for winning gold in the stand-up surfing. Branch Maxime Gold and Luca Silver in the surfing. At State in the past we have made individual finals in the swim before with Corey and Nathan. This year we made team finals, a first for our age group. Congratulations to our swim team of Nath, Sam, Corey and Kalani, who finished a respectful 8th in the final and the board relay who came 12th in what can only be described as big and challenging conditions. This increase in numbers also meant we were finally able to put in a sprint relay team. Well done Riley, James, Sonny and Lachlan. Other notable efforts where, Wyatt’s individual swim and in the swim teams at State, Kane and Scott’s paddle in the board relay heats at State on the Friday in what were, at the time, 8 foot waves. This showed how far these 2 young men have come. Years gone by they wouldn’t

U13 BOYS

have even entered the water. The effort that really showed this group’s happy go lucky style was Luca’s ironman heat. Sitting a comfortable 3rd Luca cracked a bomb out the back. Riding down the face up on his knees doing a victory salute screaming to the cheers of his mates on the beach and finishing it with a barrel role, memorable stuff. I would like to thank Ross, Mick and Ian who are there each week assisting. Luke Flint who joined this years did his official course and looked after our beach teams. Troy, Jo, Chris, and Mel for water safety, and surf ed, and anyone’s parent I have forgotten who have worked ensuring we set up, packed up, carted and set up tents, loaded and unloaded trailers, prepared and cooked BBQ’s. To Ian, Shannon, Tracey, Gary and the rest of the committee, a great effort that is appreciated by all. To our coaches, Dean, Rossi, Potty and Jock thanks for your time and volunteering it is appreciated by the boys and their parents. Stav and the IRB team along with Browny and the water safety thanks for being there so we can train and compete. To our officials, thanks for being their especially those who don’t have kids in Nippers you are true club people. Finally boys, later this year you start your final year of Nippers. You become the leaders of the Nippers group. Remember, enjoy your last season and approach in a positive, friendly, competitive and sportsmanlike manner, which will leave a lasting impression on your peers. Well done and thanks for this season and I look forward to seeing you back next season.

2014 - 2015

U14 GIRLS

WOW !! Hasn’t that gone quickly. From the U6s through to U14s seems Girls like the blink of an eye. I recall a group of girls – young, unsure of themselves, timid in the ocean but a group that always loved having fun. Now, as U14s, they still love to have fun but they are confident, proud of who they are and to be part of Wanda.

U14

Our 14s year kicked off with the majority of the girls gaining their SRC prior to the start of the season. We welcomed some new faces this season - Caitlin, Lara, Julia and Monica who blended seamlessly into the pack of now 19 girls. Our season was jammed packed with training, competition, clinics, weekly fundraising, BBQs and then culminated in our End-of-Season trip to Tallebudgera closely followed by the Junior State, Senior State Carnivals and a small contingent competing in the inaugural Aussies Youth Championships. The kids had a great time on our trip to Tallebudgera not even Marcia (cyclone) could dampen our spirits. A big thank you goes out to all the parents and their continued efforts in fundraising for the trip. And of course thank you to YOU - everyone who bought snow cones each week, supported our raffles and bought chocolates.

38

Our weekly Nippers sessions were great fun, but hard work was done at training and in competition. Thank you to some amazing coaches dedicated to Wanda and our girls – Dean, Rossie, Potty and JD for the R&R girls. With your help, we had some fantastic results throughout the season as well as being very proud to recognise Sarah who was a finalist at the Junior Lifesaver of the Year.

Chairperson Ian Blackhall

U14 BOYS

The U14 team – and I say team, because not only do the kids make up the team, it is also the efforts and work put in by the parents each week. Thank you to our whole team – getting to Nippers each week, those doing BBQ duty, beach setup and the all the others things you do including: Committee members - Lisa, Potty & Nat; Water Safety Co-ordinator – John; Water Safety – Dave, Clare, Mel, Chris, Potty, Fiona, Paul, Nat; Uniform Officer – Lisa; IRB drivers – Mick, Adam, Mark; Surf Board Riding Co-ordinator – Tony; Carnival Official – Rachel; Trainer – Potty; Education Officer – Potty; R&R Co-ordinator – Colleen; Member Protection Officer – Michele.

Luke Sothern and Nathan Rohr (who Xavier took to calling “The Fantastic 4”) who turned up week in week out whilst others came and went. It was great to see them joined in the last few years by Adam Moriatis, Joel and Blake Paton, Matt Emanuel, Luke Montedoro and Alec Brennan. What a super contribution to the age group!

Finally, and most importantly, thank you to Pauline Brown who was instrumental in directing our girls through the season. We have worked together over many seasons and Pauline continues to be a source of support, commitment and knowledge to myself and the U14s group. I could not have continued this role without her. Thank you.

Out of our mighty group of 10 usual suspects we had 8 attend the State Championships (at the cursed Umina) namely Luke, Jed, Nath, Adam, Joel, Blake, Xavier and Matt. Apart from Nath winning Bronze in surfing last year we had never won a medal in any event. Along with the girls, the Wanda boys dominated at certain times. We had our WHOLE State team in the Surf Team final, what a great surprise, with Luke, Adam ,Blake and Joel taking the SILVER medal! Then Luke, Annika Durante, Adam and bringing it home Xavier (has there ever been a happier medalist) storming to the finish and also taking SILVER. And finally, big Luke appeared out of the water in the individual swim looking for the leader until he realized it was he, to win and take GOLD! Luke also won BRONZE in the all Age Board Relay. We had 4 boys in the individual swim final, we had individual board and ironman finalists, we made the board relay final and even the beach sprint final. There were Purple People Eaters Everywhere! And to make it even better the surf was pumping for

Seniors here we come!!!

U14 Boys

THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATERS What a great way for the boys to finish up!

After many years wondering if we would even have an age group, come the 14’s, the boys finished their junior surf life saving careers as an outstanding group of young men, who were always respectful, respected, dedicated, fun and a joy to be with (even on a cold, wet southerly buster of a day). All along we had the core group of Jed Buckley, Xavier Managreve,

Whilst always able to compete at all levels and in all events, we had unfortunately lacked the depth of the other clubs and seemed to always be a man short in the teams events or not get that bit of luck in the individual events. Well that all changed this year at the State Championships.

the Age Manager and his son (but no surfing event, work that out!). As well as being the boy’s Age Manager I was also lucky to be an Age Manager for my oldest daughter, Nicole, so that I have been involved with the club for some 15 years. Accordingly, I would like to thank for guidance and support, Ian Blackhall, Potty, Donna and Charlie Brown, Anne Caterson, Phil Allum and Chris Fox, as well as the support of Ian Ross, Dean McMahon, Greg Pierce, Shannon Dixon, Lizzy and Paul Sargeant and Carol Woods. A special thank you to Pat Managreve and Adam Buckley for being my faithful sidekicks over the years. Also,

special thanks to Julie Adams, the 14 girls Age Manager, who organized our fantastic trip away to the Gold Coast, much appreciated, and having had many a fun day looking out for the girls, as well as the boys. Finally of course, I thank the parents for letting me be a part of their boys’ (now young man) growing up and development. To the boys, I wish you every success and remember: Try hard, Do your best, And you never know what might happen! All the best.

Boat Captain's Report

WOW, What a season, 3rd at State , What a great effort.

It was great to see all crews enjoy their first full season of competition.

Over the last five years (2011-2015), we have finished in the top 4 each year, 1st Place (once), 3rd Place (3 times) and fourth once. We are the most consistent performing club in the State. There were many outstanding individual and team efforts. Many thanks, to all the competitors, whom at both State and Aussies competed up in Age Groups to help the Club. That’s the Wanda Team spirit. What a strong future we have with our talented athletes, from all our sections, the Beach, Boats, Board, March Past, R&R , Ski and Swim sections, whose dedication to our sport has contributed to our success at State and Aussies. Wanda performed well at the SLSNSW Pool Rescue Championships. Congratulations to the team. Congratulations to all the members who were the recipients of Branch Awards, these were all well deserved. Wanda had many members selected for representative honours in the Surf Life Saving Sydney team, Congratulation to James Karagiannis,

Master's Report This year saw an increased number of Masters competing at the major carnivals.

40

Wanda sent Masters teams to the Branch, State and Australian Titles. New faces racing in the Masters this year included Cameron Pyett, Joel Bolewski, and Cade Barnes.

Notable mention must go to Mick Georgaris (Jnr) who this year won his third straight Australian over 30 Ski title, a huge effort considering most paddlers in this age group also go on to make the open ski final.

Cameron Pyett

Danielle McMahon, Beau Wheeler and Tate Wilkins. I would also like to thank Jeff (Charlie) Brown for his efforts as Team Manager and his assistant Donna, they did a great job both on and off the beach and his efforts are greatly appreciated by competitors, parents and all at Wanda. Thanks to all the coaches in every section for the time that they have dedicated to our club members in training and the support at carnivals. Their fantastic efforts have enabled us to achieve these results over the years. Lastly, Thank you to the all members of the Management and Competition Committees for their support throughout the year and a special thanks to Competition Committees’ partners and families for being so understanding and supportive of the club. See you on the beach next season.

Chris Fox Director Surf Sports

With two U19’s and a Masters crew we raced everything from marathons & short course, to regular carnivals. As the season progressed so too did the confidence, and with that came a few well earned results. Most notable of these were a 2nd place in the 12km Roosters River Run, 2nd place in the South Coast Surfboat Series,3rd at the Collaroy Young Guns, Qualifying for the “Best Of The best” and an invitation to race in the last round of “Ocean Thunder”.

A special mention to Jared AdamsLau for coming out of retirement to be our “super sub”, Rod Holdsworth and Ron Smith who were always willing to help out when needed. The crews this season were -

Whilst only in the 2nd year of our rebuilding stage, there were less than a handful of clubs that could field two or more U19 crews. This coming season we will have three U19 mens and a U23 girls crew. After spending the last season training on the bay and hitting the sand hills, the girls are looking forward to getting their chance at a full season racing.

Vets - Nathan Spinner, Geoff Considine, Ron Doolan, Paul Auglys and Dave McGrath.

I’d like to thank all the rowers and sweeps for their effort and commitment over the last season. Due to the renovations storing boats and getting them to training has been a huge task, thanks to all who have either stored boats or helped transport them over the last 6-8 months. A big thanks to the McGrath family who at one stage had 3 boats on their front lawn. To our sponsors Club On East and The Shire Local Banking, thank you for your continued support.

U19 Blue - Les Townsend, Tom Colquhoun, Jack Kenning, Matt Pescud and Conor McGrath. U19 Red - Nathan Spinner, Matt Jessop, Beau Grimley, Jack Spooner, Sam Keppel and Kurt Benson.

Jnr Girls Development Squad Hannah Munns, Anna Hayes, Jess Spooner,Olivier Loh,Sophie Haes and Eliza Benson. Congratulations to Tom Colquhoun Junior Rower of the Year, Sam Keppel - Boat Captains Award and the U19 Blue - Crew of the Year.

Beach Captain's Report Season 2014-15 was another season of growth, fun and Australian champions for the beach section! Being my third season as Beach Captain, this year continued the trend of increasing our overall numbers but also took the step of improving our results at the major carnivals of State and Australian Titles. Last year we won numerous state medals but only the one Australian medal. This year we took many strides into making an impact at the national level. Most pleasing, however, is the culture and the camaraderie of the beach team that is going from strength to strength – team BBQ’s, track and beach training sessions, bulking in the gym, giant Schnitzel lunches (mini for Pete) and staying away as a team interstate. Last year, we had the U/14 Nippers training with the senior squad and the fruits of this decision have now taken full effect. Jamee Smith, Hudson Berry and Kurt Stavrou were joined by Adam Mortlock to win our sport’s ultimate prize = Australian Champions in the U/15’s Beach Relay! Those who were fortunate enough to watch the race won’t forget it – from Adam’s powerful start, Kurt’s slick shuffling, Hudson’s change (probably the best I’ve ever seen) and Jamee bringing it home. It was epic in every sense of the word and a just reward for 6 years of domination at State level. Big thanks to the parent’s who kept the boys going during that period and bringing them up to the seniors. Congratulations must also go to Kai Atkinson who filled in for Adam at State and ran a brilliant first leg for another State gold.

42

Another highlight from Aussies which might not seem as significant on paper but is actually a real feat is Matthew Lewis making the Open

Men’s Beach Sprint final. Wedged in between Stawell Gift winners and semi-professional track athletes, Matt ran out of his skin to be the first open male to make the last top 8 in Australia since the late, great Marc Leabeater 8 years ago. Our junior sprint stocks appear in good stead with the club having 2 runners in the U/19s men beach sprint final; with Peter Axiotis running a brilliant race to secure the bronze medal. This capped off a break out year for Peter – making representative teams, winning the opens and 19’s sprints at Branch and 2nd places at Manly carnival and the State Titles. Just needs to work on those catching skills hey Pete! The hard luck story was James Karagiannis doing an amazing job making the final after a torn hammy only weeks earlier - only to re-injure this during the race. Both boys are first year in the age group so look out for them plus the relay team with Adam Leabeater next year. Combine this with the 15 boys relay team, Jamee Smith making the U/15’s Aussies final, Josh Fernandes coming 5th at State in his first year 17’s and the next 2 years should be very exciting – keep training hard boys! While our numbers in the females continues to be a work in progress, the girls we do have are a core group of quality runners and quality people. This year we were fortunate enough to have Ella Southwell and Shelby Wilde come through from the juniors and Greer Calabro and Lauren Campbell in the Opens. All 4 girls are fantastic in their own way. Ella flagged brilliantly to achieve a fantastic 4th in the U/15 girls beach flags at State. Shelby is only just starting to realise her potential – her sprint performance at branch is an

example of this. Greer and Lauren – both in their 30’s – are the fittest; most ripped competitors out there; putting girls half their age to shame. Running on sand takes years and years to Master yet these 2 mums trained harder than anyone and the improvement in one season was astounding; resulting in a bronze medal in the relay at the Aussies Masters titles and Greer grabbing a bronze in the Masters sprint! These girls were ably supported by Sophie Lewis in the Opens; Chenaya Cooper in the 19’s; Caity Smith and Eve Neilson in the 17’s and Amie O’Donoghue in the 15’s. Well done to all these girls – it can be very hard and unmotivating to be the only competitor in your age group – bring some friends down! Special congratulations to Caity Smith who had her best year yet; making the final of the Manly Carnival and just missing the State final. All our 15’s, 19’s and Open’s beach relay teams contested the state final; were right in the mix mid race and was their best run as a team all year. Still being a competitor, it is easy for me to attend training and organise a few things. However, the real credit must be paid to our Beach Coaches. Wayne Owen has been the sprints, flags and relays coach for a few years now but has really stepped up his commitment in the last 2 years. The amount of planning and organising behind all the scheduled sessions is second to none. Our training has increased to almost 10 months a year and 5-6 sessions a week and Wayne does all this without any family connection to the club. I know words are cheap but the entire beach team is over the moon having you

MATT LEWIS

involved and realise all this success wouldn’t have come close without your involvement. It is no surprise that the 2 athletes who have spent the longest time training with him – Matt Lewis and Peter Axiotis – got the best results this year. The same can be said about Jock Campbell coaching the 2km runners. I haven’t gone into Jock’s achievements training the 2km runners as he will cover this his report. Jock is the ultimate professional and his energy and

passion for helping the athletes is rubbing off on the whole squad. Jock also coached the female sprinters this year and their results speak for themselves. Wanda as a club can really use someone of your status and skillset in the future and I thank you for putting in all this time with a young family.

that without your support and involvement, those top athletes wouldn’t have reached those heights. Our medals are won as a squad. YOU are the difference.

Lastly, thank you to all the parents and to all the competitors for simply ‘getting amongst it’. Even if you didn’t win a State or Australian medal personally, you should realise

See you all next season!

Let’s keep getting involved, keeping fit and having fun while we are young.

2km Beach Report The 2km Beach Team has exploded, it started out with 1 member back in 2005/2006 when Dee Cooper won the World Title, to this season where we had more than 20 runners compete in the event this season.

Our runners ranged from 13year old Nippers running up with the big boys, to 52 year olds and we had several wins and even a few last places. But all runners trained hard, raced hard and are all welcome no matter what their standard. This was my favourite season, and started back in September with the World Titles in France and concluded with our runners coming home with 7 x 2km medals at Nationals.

in the races, and that’s why we had some great results. Highlights of the season, this was tough as there were so many, in no particular order:

1

I set a goal in last year’s annual report that said exactly “The challenge I’m setting for next season is a gold medal at Worlds and 5 national medals next year, with at least 2 Gold’s.“ Well we didn’t get a gold at Worlds, but we did get 2 silvers, a 4th and Mel Campbell was first to cross the line in the Master’s 2km (but that’s another story.) But we did get three great gold’s at Nationals with Chloe Gentle and Elly O Donoghue winning in style in a couple of hard fought races and showed what tough competitors they are. Who could forget Donna Cox’s win with a broken foot in the Masters as well. And we trumped the requested 5 with 7 medals, so great work everyone.

44

The 2km event is a lung busting, lactate producing smash up, where often our runners are dizzy, sick or pass out at the end. To win there’s no hiding, you have to be extremely well trained in the event, and be willing to physically hurt yourself to win. I am so impressed with our core group of runners who continually did this throughout the training year and

2

3

4

The 3 young guns getting 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the State Titles in the U15 Girls. We had a plan for the last 2 years of Lara Saunders, Chloe Gentle and Elly O Donahue achieving this. It was a plan we kept between the 4 of us, and I love it when a plan comes together. What a great moment in sport! The world titles in France – seeing Mel Campbell come back 6 months after having baby number 3 and get first across the line in her Masters race, followed by a hard fought 4th in the Opens was amazing. Ali’s race to get the silver in the open men’s final was an amazing effort as well. The 3 Aussie golden girls. All fantastic races started with Chloe Gentle in a lead pack of 5 girls, finally pull away with 150m to go to outlast a classy field and faint at the end, great effort. Followed by Elly O, with her vast sand running experience ran an incredibly smart and gutsy race to win the U15, and then our Master athlete 17 times Australian Waterski champion Donna Cox, run the final with a broken foot and outsprint her rival to win by 1m. Brilliant girls! Scott Clancy in his first ever 2km beach run came last at the Wanda carnival. The great thing

5

6

7

8

about this was the race winner Ali Najem, Mitch Palmer and North Cronulla’s Lachie Crawford all ran back to him and brought their training partner home in a show of great support. That is teamwork and supporting your teammates. Sydney Branch titles where our runners won 6 of the 8 gold medals, including all the female categories up for grabs. Mel Campbell (open), Emily Rohr U19, Emma Brown U17, Chloe Gentle U15, and Ali Najen (open) and Jack Porter U15. A pretty good day that. Emily Rohr after having a year off winning for her HSC trained exceptionally hard for over a year to finally get her form and fitness back, winning State U19 Gold, Aussie silver and winning U19 Sydney Branch Athlete of the year. Ali Najem silver medals at State, Australian and World Titles. Not the colour that he wanted or we for that matter, but a magnificent effort in training and racing. The good thing is that not winning the Gold’s may keep him in Surf Lifesaving for that little bit longer. The best out of all was the growth of our team, and the team atmosphere in our squad. The additions of Donna Cox, Dee McCarthy, Scott Clancy, Georgia McGrath, cricketer Rory Darkins, Matt Peterie, Sarah Brown, Johnny Woods, Andrew Joseph and youngsters Chloe Gentle and Lara Saunders finally being old enough to run has been fantastic.

The 2km relay, which was tested at the Wanda Carnival. 2 people relay each running 1km. Great fun 14 teams took part in the carnival and have been sanctioned as a new event by the ILS. A really tough event, the most enjoyable event I have been in at Surf Lifesaving and a great addition for endurance runners in Surf Lifesaving. After last year’s athlete rating system, it’s back by popular demand; well I think two people liked it.

JOCK’S RATING OF ATHLETE’S (NON-SCIENTIFIC) Ali Najem – Sydney Branch Gold, and triple silvers State, Australian and World Titles. Works very hard, great team player, well done. Mel Campbell – Club Champ. Opens: 4th World Titles, 1st Sydney Branch, 3rd State Titles, 5th Australian Tiles. Masters: 1st across the line World Titles, 2nd State Titles, 2nd Australian Titles at age 38 all within 12 months of having her 3rd baby. 2nd best athlete in her house! Mitch Palmer – Back from finding himself in Peru, did really well considering his sabbatical, great to see him back Rory Darkins – a new recruit from New Zealand and Sutherland Cricket, now living in Australia and one of Ali’s training partners. Rory did great coming 5th at State Titles and finishing top 12 at Nationals. Great job good to see you in a real sport. Emily Rohr – U19 Sydney Branch and State Champion, Silver at Australian Titles, turned her weakness of soft sand into her strength. Great season, became a tough athlete! Chloe Gentle – 1st Sydney Branch U15, 2nd State Titles U15, Australian Champion U14. A natural sand runner, great competitor and has a huge future. Knows where the cameras are and has some unorthodox poses for the media.

Lara Saunders – 1st U15 Sate Titles, 5th at Australian Titles. A fantastic athlete, far better than her dad was. When Lara picks up running in the soft sand she will be unstoppable. Lara has a massive future in all forms of running. Jock Campbell – Masters Silver medals at Branch and World Titles + open Worlds finalist, Bronze at State and Australian Titles. Clearly a great runner, great bloke, best coach, superb athlete, really could have been a male model or a hand model! Matt Petrie – still the enigma! Improving each year, 6th at the State Titles, fitter than normal with some solid club performances. Elly O’Donahue – Despite swimming taking over as her number 1 sport and dominating at that, Ellanor still fit the odd few races in. Elly has been running with me since she was 8 years old, and now after a superb Aussie final she is an Aussie Champion. Tough competitor. Emma Brown – despite a significant calf tear half way through the season, Emm fought back and won Silver at State Titles. The quiet achiever, great work considering an 8-week interruption to training John Woods – World Titles finalist, solid performer all season, despite only running 1-2 times per week due to 20 hours a week of swimming. Good athlete, great World Titles tourist and his best event was the duathlon at Worlds. Finishing his 2km final at Worlds, he then had to jog immediately down the beach 500m where they were waiting for him to start the Surf Swim final. Pretty tough that combo.

Donna Cox – Superwoman, previous 17 times Australian Waterski Champ, started her Surf Lifesaving Career in Perth as boatie with some great success, now won everything she had a go at in her Masters events. Branch, State and Aussie Champ in her first attempt! Andrew Joseph – a mid season addition, from long course triathlon to 2km beach run. Adapted well, had a solid season, great fun, but could never keep his shirt on. Georgia McGrath – Another mid season transfer. Training with us for some time now Georgia came to me and asked if she could join Wanda and transfer from North. A great addition to our team coming 5th at State in the opens, but unfortunately hurting her back in the Aussie final. A great talent and will have a huge year next year. Sarah Brown – did well despite limited training. A talented natural runner, with some regular training could do really well. Great to have her with us. We had a real team atmosphere at training and races amongst the club. This was much to do with many of the iron-people and sprinters joining in our sessions during the season, which helped build great camaraderie amongst the club. It’s great to see everyone happy with each other’s success and the spirit and culture developing amongst the club. Another really enjoyable season with only better things to come. 11 medals at State, 7 medals at Aussies and 3 medals at World Titles, that’s a pretty good year!

Scott Clancy - Great to see Scott join the club, complete his bronze medallion, race with his teammates. A great new addition to our team.

Look out next year; we’re coming for you!

Dee McCarthy – The food sergeant. So excited to see the World Titles results and trip to France, Dee was motivated to join the club and compete. Winning Gold in the Maters 2km at State, great start from Dee who is the spiritual mother of our team.

Jock

R&R Reports

2014 Sutherland 2 Surf "43rd Year" Almost 8000 participants braved the cold wind and drizzle for the 43rd Brookes- Caltex Sutherland to Surf.

Under 14 R&R Report

Open R&R Report

Team - Sarah Brown, Eloise Cantlon, Isabella Conroy, Gemma Cooke, Emma Phillpot

Teams: Open 6 Person: Blake McCrindle, Kurt Melville, Stuart Smith, Grant Sandstrom, Brock Douglas, Ian Kerz

I am very happy with the way you all performed in your first season of competition. Not easy considering most of the opposition had competed either in Two Person or Five Person previously. Most people don`t understand the amount of detail to be learned in R & R and the discipline required to compete at the highest level. Not only did the girls compete at the State Titles but also the Australian. After the big learning curve of this season I can see good results for the coming one. Sarah Brown was justly rewarded for her effort by winning the most improved R & R competitor in Wanda. She readily picked up the details of her position and lost no more than one point in competition. I am looking forward to seeing Sarah actually doing the Belt Swims. Both Eloise, Gemma and Emma performed the resuscitation with distinction and Isabella was exceptional on the reel. I must thank the mums and dads for their support and especially Colleen for being my assistant, chasing up the girls for training and ensuring the reel turned up at the carnivals.

46

I trust you are all enjoying your winter sports and I wish you all success.

Open Male 5 Person: Blake McCrindle, Kurt Melville, Stuart Smith, Grant Sandstrom, Brock Douglas Open Mixed 5 Person: Georgia McGrath, Emily Caterson, Glenn Bell, Grant Sandstrom, Brock Douglas Open Female 5 Person: Ebony Green, Grace Sheridan, Joanna Stavrou, Joanna Axiotis, Katelyn Haywood As a last minute appointee to referee the R&R area at the State Championships, I had no option other than to watch my team compete from a distance. And I watched in awe as they proceeded to “drill zero” to win the Open 5 Man Event. This team are just that good! So I tested them at Aussies and asked Grant and Brock to lead the Mixed team including our new 2km run recruit from North Cronulla, Georgia. Again they competed magnificently and with Emily smashing her male opposition in the belt, they finished a very unlucky second. The 5 Man event was the last of the day on the Saturday and as the tide came in the boys had to march through waist deep water

which the other teams escaped and unfortunately they never recovered but finished a gallant third. But then our Qatar based patient, Ian Kerz, joined the team for the 6 person event and despite a mountain of questionable judging, they outswam their counterparts by enough to secure their 6th Australian 6 person R&R Premiership. A simply outstanding achievement. Our Women’s team also had the opportunity to compete on Sunday but fell just short of the final. It wasn’t due to a lack of effort and they definitely know how to have a good time at Aussies. They know they have the potential, but just need the application. Some serious training early in the season will be required to get this team into the top three. Again thank you to Glenn Bell for the work he puts in with our trailer, tents and reels and to Tony and Yvonne Holland for their assistance during the year. Paula Cox does an amazing job as timekeeper at carnivals and Solly continues to amaze with his stamina in judging event after event. Finally, thank you again to our wives, fiancé and girlfriends for the support you continue to give us and Wendy for bringing Ron’s spirit with her each year to watch the boys do their best for him.

Gordon McKirdy

Because of the major changes that occurred with the parking area and road on the western side of our surf club, we decided to move the finish for the first time up the hill to Don Lucas Reserve. This worked well as it gave competitors and spectators more room to move and more space for bbq’s and food outlets and provided a carnival atmosphere. The race was won by Russell DessaixChin of North Wollongong in a time of 34.16, second was David MainWaring followed by Joshua Torley 35.33. Past women’s winner and second year in a row was Belinda Martin of Sylvania in a time of 38.05. Clare Geraghty was second and

Claire Ashworth was third. Wanda Surf Club’s first member home in 17-19 age group was Ali Najem who came sixth overall in a time of 36.01. Brighton Baths Athletic Club won the teams’ event. At the presentation Russell was presented with a cheque for $1000AUD plus the Andrew Lloyd Trophy and Belinda also $1000AUD prize money with the Kerryn McCann Trophy. A big thank you to all our sponsors, to all the club members who helped especially my co-organiser Anne Catterson, wife Sue, Trevor Elliott and especially Peter Cullen who for

a number of years, by himself, has put out the yellow signage which advises motorists about the S2S and the changed traffic conditions on the day of the race. Club members have to realise the S2S is our biggest fund raiser and we are very fortunate to have such a high profile event in the Shire and I am sure we wouldn’t have such a beautiful clubhouse we have today without this great community event. Looking forward to another successful S2S in 2015.

March Past Report Glenn Bell Coach along with Brian Cowan (Technical advisor) turned this team from near bottom of the table in 2014 to 2nd equal (4th on count back) in just one year at the 2015 Aussies on the Gold Coast. Both of these men are well respected by the group and hopefully they will be available to do it all again in 2016. Brian put a lot of work in the two days leading up to the competition and brought along an army of gurus who gave valuable training and advise. This team would have to be the most improved in its event, if not in the entire Aussies, which is a great achievement and well worth being proud of. Leading up to the Aussies, they competed in 3 events, North

Cronulla, Coogee and State Champs at Umina coming in at 9th. Special mention must also go to Paula Cox for her efforts as the team manager. The support group of Peter Cox and Ross Hunt, once again have done a great job, carrying the reel for many miles and all the little incidentals that make life easier for the competitors. Anita Pryke our President once again lead from the front as our standard bearer, Kate Mountain on the belt pulled along the reel team of Margaret Ryall, Yvonne Holland, Marilyn Georgaris and Gyliane Ware, they were flanked by Paula Cox and Jann Townsend on the pivots. Completing this tight knit group on the back line was Narelle Hunt, Vanessa McKirdy, Maree Ovens

and Jeannie Gunn. Our team had quality reserves with Donna Mackie, Barbara Anderson and Donna Brown competing in lead up events. 2015-16 season promises to be a good one for this team with all the team available to participate. Win draw or lose this team will be competitive both on and off the sand.

At State we had mixed results from the small group. As a team, they finished with 2 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronze. This was very pleasing as all these medals came from Nipper aged swimmers, many of them competing in their first pool rescue carnival.

48

A few more sessions in the pool and the Australian titles were upon them. These were held at Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, always a difficult pool to compete in Pool Rescue

due to the 3m depth. Manikins and bricks are difficult to pick up from the bottom of the pool already without the increased depth. Again the team did well to step up at the bigger event, and fist Australian titles for the Nippers. Highlights were definitely Scott Purves and Kalani Ryan winning silver in the U12 Line Throw, and Kiera Warn taking home a bronze in the U12 100m Obstacle race. Nathan Clarke also had a successful carnival coming so close to medalling in 3 events. I’m sure he’ll crack in time. Later in the year John Woods travelled across to France for the World Championships as Wanda’s sole pool competitor. In an extremely tough competition John did himself and the pool rescue section proud coming up against Olympic level swimmers on their home turf, or water. A massive thank you must go to the parents of the swimmers for getting

them to training, sitting through the session in the rain and wind, and continually supporting them to compete at the carnivals. Thank you to Engadine Leisure Centre for allowing the group to have the lane space free of cost. Thank you to Engadine Royal Lifesaving Club for use of equipment, such as manikins, tubes and fins. And finally thank you to the two boards of the club, the Nipper and Open for supporting this aspect of Surf Sport. Without ongoing emails and messages to club members pool rescue would not be able to happen. Seeing as we had such a young group this season, here’s hoping to more Nippers being involved and the one season veterans to further improve their skills with the manikins, bricks, tubes and fins to faster times, improved results and medals.

MATESHIP TREK Gallipoli, Turkey January 2015

Jimmy come along with us, but we had two current serving Turkish army soldiers, who came along with us for a few days as we trekked the Gallipoli peninsular.

As some of you are aware, The Mateship Trek is a biannual event which brings together young people from different walks of life for a journey through a part of Australia’s military history. The aim of Mateship Trek is to create understanding between different groups of young people - and also ensure that the feats of our soldiers are not forgotten. The Mateship Trek is also a bi-partisan initiative. Scott Morrison, our Federal member for Cook and the Minister for Social Services, together with Jason Clare, Federal member for Blaxland and the Shadow Minister for Communications organised the first Mateship trek to Kokoda in 2009. They followed this up by organising a Trek to Sandakan in Borneo in 2011. In 2013 they retraced the WW2 battle that occurred along the ‘Black Cat’ track in Northern Papua New Guinea. To mark the Centenary of World War I, Gallipoli became the focus of the next trek, earlier this year, in which I participated in. The opportunity to participate in the 2015 Mateship Trek was brought to me by the surf club. At first, I wasn’t really all that fussed on applying for the trek, but once I looked more into it and spoke to a close friend who had been on the previous Mateship Trek, but also with the persistence from my Mum, I realised what an incredible and once in a lifetime

50

opportunity this was. Being selected as a part of ‘Team Cook’ alongside Scott Morrison (my local MP) and three other fellow ‘clubbies’ was a great honour. I knew being selected to participate in the Mateship Trek was going to take a lot of commitment and hard work, but I was prepared for that. The trek was not funded by the government, but by fundraising to raise the funds for all of us to travel, and to do what we did. While this was money being raised for us to participate, each of us also had to do fundraising of our own, for the Soldier On Foundation. The Soldier On Foundation is one that supports returned serviceman from current conflicts, and assists them in their physical and even mental recoveries. We were accompanied by a 25-year returned Special Forces veteran, Nick Hill, as well as retired Major General Jim Molan. Not only did Nick and

We first travelled to Istanbul, where we did a few days of historical sightseeing, visiting the Blue Mosque, travelling from Europe to Asia over the Bosphorus Strait (for those who don’t know, the Bosphorus Strait forms the boundary of Europe and Asia and connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara), while also having some time to visit the Grand Bazaar, and do some shopping. The trek is something I have found hard to describe to people when they ask me what it was like. It is something I feel so privileged to have been a part of, particularly being able to travel to Gallipoli in the year of the Centenary of Anzac. It was an experience of learning more deeply about the Gallipoli campaign, not only the Australian story but also the Turkish story. It was such an eye-opening experience to really see how many burial sites there were, and we didn’t even visit all of them. I have never really been much of a history buff, it definitely wasn’t my ‘forte’ in high school, but this experience definitely opened my eyes and has made me appreciate

our Australian history so much more than I had ever thought. It was a tough few days of walking and camping, a first experience at that, but an experience that I will never forget. We walked over kilometres and kilometres of sacred ground, and I feel as though not many people have had the opportunity to experience such a thing. We were given permission to trek the peninsular. This area is off limits to all visitors. No one has ever been allowed to enter the site on foot, so this was a great privilege. I was in absolute awe when we came across fragments of rum jars, bullet casings and fuel containers, just to name a few, that had obviously remained since the Gallipoli campaign. It was simply amazing to see these pieces of history remain after 100 years. I feel very lucky to have shared this experience with the people I did. We are from two very different areas of Sydney, two different cultures, but that wasn’t what was important - it was being able to come together and form connections as proud Australians. It was such an amazing group of people and I feel blessed to have met them. The idea of ‘Mateship’ was definitely evident throughout the trip, with many laughs being had, and the amount of support shown by each and every person there. True friendships were formed, and although this trip was as much about retracing the steps of the Anzac and Turkish soldiers, it was more about the bonds formed with one another.

I was fully aware of how physically tough and exhausting this experience would be, but I certainly underestimated how emotionally exhausting it really was. It really was an eye-opener hearing about how many lives were lost during the campaign, and hearing the full extent of all battles that took place on the peninsular. Being able to walk these tracks, through hills and valleys of bush and shrub really allowed me to realise and understand what these soldiers went through 100 years ago. On our final morning on Australia Day, we had a dawn service at Lone Pine Cemetery, and it was here that I really took in the reality of what I had just experienced. This trek was an experience that I find hard to put in words, as there are not enough words to describe how grateful I am for the opportunity. It really has enlightened me and I now appreciate our Australian, and the Turkish history so much more than I ever thought. I had really learnt that Anzac Day is not a day to celebrate this historical event, but a day to commemorate and reflect on what Gallipoli and World War 1 really was. And that’s exactly what it was for me. Last Saturday was a very special day for me. I didn’t only participate in my

dawn service at Cronulla Beach as just a member of the Sutherland Shire community, but I was given the special opportunity to lay a wreath and book on behalf of Scott Morrison. MP, as he was not able to attend, due to being at the city dawn service on behalf of Tony Abbott. This was such a privilege for me to be asked to take part in such a monumental day for Australian history. The Sutherland Shire Council, together with Mr Morrison’s office, put on a Commemoration Service later that morning, again bringing the community together. I was lucky to enough to participate in this as well, by reading out the story of Private Robert Isadore Bakewell, alongside my fellow Mateship trekkers, past and present. It was such an amazing day for me, but also for my local community and the wider to community, to come together and commemorate 100 years of such a historical moment in time. It was really extra special for me, having had the amazing opportunity to travel to Gallipoli and walk in the footsteps of those many soldiers who fought for their countries. All in all, this is something I will have with me for the rest of my life and I feel so lucky to have been able to experience it in the year of the Centenary of Anzac. I wish to thank Anita Pryke and the board of directors at Wanda SLSC for helping me realise this great opportunity.

Ladies Auxiliary Report After getting a new kitchen in 2013 it has now been moved upstairs. Smaller than the last one, time will tell how it goes when we cater for our first carnival in January. Thanks to the ladies who came down to help empty the old one and pack it all in boxes, then coming back to restock the new one. Thanks to Marilyn for kindly lending us her kitchen to cater for the Wanda carnival. With the club just about nonexistent with no kitchen it was impossible to do anything there. Other than the Wanda carnival we only catered for the Sutherland to Surf and the annual general meeting. Our condolences go out to Nita Allum’s family who passed away in June. Nita was a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary and had been part of it for many, many years, and was always there to help out.

Our Condolences also go out to Noelene Turner’s family who passed away last July. Noelene had been part of the auxiliary since 1999 she also was ready to lend a hand when needed. We will miss these two ladies immensely. We donated money towards 100% patrol attendance recipients on presentation night. All those who attended our Christmas night out had an enjoyable night. Thanks to Marilyn for organising it. Thank you to all ladies who helped out over the season. A “SPECIAL” thank you to Sue Backhouse as secretary for all those emails and SMS messages and for organising all our meetings, Christmas night out and weekends away which are always enjoyable, Sue I do hope you do it all again next year.

Thanks to Wendy Sandstrom for your continued effort of restocking the Coca Cola machines, as this is our fund raiser at the moment. Thank you again for the money raised. Thanks to Judy Hunter as our treasurer for looking after the books. Thanks to Anita Pryke for your help over the season and your continued work for Wanda. I would also like to thank Carol Woods for her help over the years, I was sorry to see her leave. I look forward to your continued support next season.

President

1926 – 2015 Nita joined Wanda Ladies Auxiliary on 15th September 1980 after a call to arms for volunteers to help with the 1981 Australia Surf Championships to be held at Wanda Beach. Nita held the position of President 1981 to 1987/88 season, Secretary in 1988/1989 season, Treasurer in 1989 to 1994/95 season and Patron 1995/96 season. Nita was elevated to Life Member Wanda Ladies Auxiliary in 2000 and received her 25 year Service Medal in 2004. Nita was an ongoing Member of the Wanda Ladies Auxiliary for 34 years.

Nita’s greatest love was to follow her children and grandchildren in whatever field they participated in along with husband Ted (deceased). Nita nursed Ted with loving care throughout his illness.

excelled as an athlete and was a part of the Cronulla Sharks’ junior representative Matthews and S G Ball teams, also starring as a beach sprinter with North Cronulla SLSC, and later with Wanda SLSC. Marc Leabeater’s zest for life knew no bounds. Sometimes, it clashed with his sporting interests. “Like when he made the Cronulla Sharks National Youth [old Toyota Cup] Squad, but was eventually cut due to his conflicting interests,” recalled his good friend Tate Wilkins, the Wanda SLSC beach captain. “Marc loved going out, loved a party and loved life. ‘’He switched to Wanda at 16 and we soon developed a very good beach sprint team. He went on to win state and national titles, even though we had some bad luck in relay finals. “He was such a good beach sprinter, despite a strange running style… and he just took it in his stride. “I remember one Saturday he turned up to a State championship carnival at Wanda, apparently still affected by his big night before. But Marc told me he’d be ok after bacon and eggs roll. And he was.

physio was ‘getting back on my surfboard,’ Wilkins said. “That was Marc to a T. He lost about 7 kilograms in hospital and he told me he felt he could make a comeback to beach sprinting … but I doubted that.” “Marc’s passion, energy and flamboyance touched the lives of all who came into contact with him,” said Wanda’s Tait Brannock. Marc Leabeater is survived by his Dad Larry, Mum Tania and younger brothers Scott and Adam, who at 17 is following in Marc’s footsteps and is in Wanda’s beach sprint team.

“He went on to win the Under 19 state beach sprint, and then backed it up by taking out the Open sprint as well,” said Wilkins. “It was quite incredible to see, considering his big night.” Marc’s zest for the good life was intertwined with a fine brain for legal studies. He completed his university studies at the University of Wollongong (Bachelor of Law and Economics), and at the University of Santa Barbara, where he also played rugby with distinction before returning to Cronulla. “He loved surfing and had been on surfing trips to the Maldives and Bali, so when the physiotherapist tried to tell him the correct exercises for recovery, Marc told him the best

FINANCIAL REPORT

WANDA SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INCORPORATED A.B.N.60 850 705 106

Finance Director's Report

Board of Director's Report BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S REPORT

The following is the audited Financial Report of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club, the Junior Activities Group and the Ladies Auxiliary for the 2014-2015 Season. The Club achieved a surplus of $46,752 after a write off of $393,779 for depreciation and the value of the demolished sections of the clubhouse. The major financial activities for the year were the completion of the clubhouse development and again the Sutherland to Surf Fun Run & Walk. On the development, the building was completed for a total cost of $2,463.899. This is within the $2,600,000 approved by last year’s Special Meeting. This was achieved by tight control of costs and the building process by the Building Committee and through a good relationship with Artas [Architects], Intrec [Builder] and our consultants, that enabled a successful completion of a quality building within budget. The other aspect of the development was financing. The Special Meeting also approved the borrowing of $1,500.000 with the Club funding the balance from cash reserves. The loan was arranged through the ANZ Bank with a Guarantee & Indemnity from Sutherland Shire Council. The loan drawdown stands at $1,227,832. The Deputy Finance Director at the time, Paul Leighton, with his banking experience was most helpful in the preparation and successful presentation of the loan proposals. In last Year’s report it was recognised that money set aside by Sutherland Shire Council amounting to $70,232 and grants from the NSW Government of $73000 and from the Commonwealth Government of $100,000 would materially assist with the funding of the project.

These grants have been forthcoming and are included as income in this report. Special thanks are due for this assistance to Sutherland Shire Council and to Parliamentary Members, Mark Speakman and Scott Morrison. The 43rd Sutherland to Surf was our major fundraiser, with the income used to support active surf club operations, lifesaving and our members. This is a Wanda volunteer event, led by Mick Brannock, Anne Caterson and Sue Brannock, with an army of workers from all areas within the club, and the generous financial support of our sponsors. The event is not only vital for Wanda, but is used by many worthy charities for their fundraising. During this year the Board of Management took a range of steps to tighten the handling of the finances of the club. These steps included the full changeover to an MYOB accounting system, the appointment of a bookkeeper, appointment of a Bar Functions Manager, Founders Room staff working to award conditions including PAYE tax, Superannuation and Workers’ Compensation coverage. Gay Curtis is also still engaged to manage our sponsors and be a point of contact and communication with them. These steps recognise we are a business and our volunteers need support to run the Club. The goal now is to develop the new Founders’ Room into a successful operation that will contribute to further the objects of the club. On the business side, our tenants are secure with lease options exercised as they fall due. A rigorous

Report on the Financial Report

Audit Report of Frank Larosa continued

I have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated. (the Association) which comprises the balance sheet as at 30 April 2015, and the income statement and cash flow statement for the year ended on that date, a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes and the statement by members of the Board.

I also report that:

Board's Responsibility for the Financial Report

(a) the financial statements show a true and fair view of the financial result of fundraising appeals conducted during the year;

The Board of the Association is responsible for the preparation of the financial report and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act NSW 2009 and the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 and is appropriate to meet the needs of members. This Board••s responsibility also includes such internal control as the Board determines is necessary to enable the preparation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement whether due to fraud or error

(b) the accounting and associated records have been properly kept during the year in accordance with the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 and the Regulations; (c) money received as a result of fundraising appeals conducted during the year has been properly accounted for and applied in accordance with the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 and the Regulations; and

Auditor's Responsibility

(d) at the date of this report, there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Association will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due.

My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. I conducted my audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the Board, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.

Signed Principal

Frank Larosa

Independence In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical pronouncements. Basis for Qualified Auditor’s Opinion My audit report has been issued with the following qualification: As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for the Association to maintain an effective system of internal control over donations, subscriptions, sales and fundraising activities until their initial entry into the accounting records. Accordingly, my audit in relation to such revenue was limited to amounts recorded

Auditor's Opinion In my opinion except for the matter referred to in the preceding paragraph, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects the financial position of Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated as at 30 April 2013 and of its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, and the Associations Incorporations Act NSW 2009. Basis of Accounting and Restriction on Distribution Without modifying my opinion, I draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Wanda Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act NSW 2009 and the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.
