SUBTRACTIVE SPACE, a hermitage DESIGN CHALLENGE: To create a solid structure then subtract from it. Then to create voids that form a space that accommodates students. To design a hermitage to replace the benches, where students can study, relax, and reflect or reconvene in Carl D. Duncan Hall of Science at San Jose State University. DESIGN SOLUTION: Using SketchUp’s “Push & Pull” tool to create a hermitage called “Zhuan”, I created a space to accomodate students that can sit, lean on, and hang out.

inside outside the box DESIGN CHALLENGE: To create a conceptual architecture that expresses connections and patterns that will be used to develop the working/living project. The client wants to be isolated from the city and experience living in nature. DESIGN SOLUTION: I used wooden dowels, cubes, and tubes to express the connections throughout the architecrture - inspired by the growth patterns of bamboo. The architecture is placed in a forest that has a lake nearby.

31 POST STREEt DESIGN CHALLENGE: Renovation of 31 Post Street in San Jose, a historial building, into a compelling new space that brings people in. DESIGN SOLUTION: The first floor and second floor is divided in half. The front section of the first floor is a bagel shop, where fresh bagels are delivered each morning. The second floor is a coffee shop, a continuation from the bagel shop. The back section of the first floor is a gallery for artists to display their art pieces. The second floor is an art studio for people to be creative. The third floor is an Airbnb where guests can stay over night in the heart of Downtown San Jose.

re3 DESIGN CHALLENGE: To design a conceptual restaurant in San Francisco. To use recycled material to create a light fixture and design a custom wallpaper motif. To develop a 3D stamp, wallpaper, and stencil wall. DESIGN SOLUTION: At home, we always have cupcake liners lying around on the kitchen table. I thouhght why not use it as my recycled material? To continue with the theme, I picked strawberry cheesecake as my motif, stencil and wallpaper. I designed a sweet dessert shop where the atmopshere is monochromatic. The front section is more open and public, whereas the back is reserved and private.
