Agha Khan’s Arabesque

The Islamic Contemporary Art Museum

Time: Spring 2022

Location: Dubai, U.A.E

Type: Academic (Group Work, with Zihang Wang)

Contribution: Concept Design, Modeling, Mapping, Rendering, Physicla Model

Instructor: Hina Jamelle

This project focus on transforming the color, material, and rhythm of the threshold on the beautiful arabesque artwork from The Bab Mansour fountain of Morocco into an architectural language and try to apply them to the design of the New Agha Khan Museum of Islamic and Contemporary Art for Dubai. By analyzing the artwork with machine learning tools, a series of shapes of geometry and prototype of space can be established. Spaces are then generated from the harmonious prototype and organized with the typical museum function programming. The relationship between interior and exterior is controlled by the similar logic underlining the arabesque artwork which makes the experience inside the building more dynamic. The goal of the project is to try to set up a new system of Islamic Museum that are independent of the contemporary museum system.

The main exhibits of the indoor gallery are ancient Islamic art works. Such works require a suitable environment to be protected.

In an environment with a dome, the interior space becomes larger, and artworks with larger volumes and areas or relief works can be displayed.

After the evolution of 2.5D, the interior and exterior spaces of the building are affected accordingly. The elements produced in the previous process are here transformed into threedimensional space.

This work is a personal work in the 2020 WUPEN design topic. Its architectural layout and overall planning are common patterns in major domestic university towns. Such universities are rigidly arranged according to the needs of traditional teaching buildings, and fail to bring improvements in students' lives and teaching. Therefore, the design of the teaching complex is to propose a new concept for the lifestyle of future college students. In the case of intensive use of land, as much as possible to ensure the convenience and quality of students in life and study. With the theme of "Future", it brings more possibilities to the design concept.

The cafeteria provides students with simple catering services, including meals and drinks, to satisfy basic demands.

Seminar spaces include a large open space for nearly sixty people and a small seminar room for three to five people.

Each floor of the dormitory can lead to the gym. Separation by landscape prevents noise from being transferred.

The library has a novel outdoor reading space outside and a large bookcase running through the inside room.

The angle of the landscape follows the axis of landscape in campus. It also plays a role in egulating the microclimate.

As a large gathering place, the theater at the top is good for students to hold parties or watch movies.

NFT Museum

The Future of the NY Stock Exchange

Time: Fall 2021

Location: New York, USA

Type: Academic (Group Work, with Zongmin Guo)

Contribution: Concept Design, Modeling, Mapping, Rendering, Physicla Model

Instructor: Brian De Luna

The building is the NFT Museum, which is built above the New York Stock Exchange and serves as an exhibition for Nonfungible token. People flow through the entire building from bottom to top, and see various machines that serve Nonfungible token, such as screens, servers, and cooling systems. In order to communicate the left and right buildings above the NYSE, the museum built a staircase in the façade, which was wrapped in a double façade. On the walls inside the building, there are seams in various directions. These seams are the tracks of the robot arm. The robotic arm is used to maintain various machines inside the building. On the one hand, this building is a working area for Non-fungible token, and on the other hand, it is a space for people to visit.

03

Inside the building, there are many robotic arms distributed along the wall. These robotic arms can be transported to replace damaged instruments. Saves space for handling large instruments.

The interior of the building has a huge cavity with many platforms. The central platform is the central point of circulation and the place with the largest number of platforms. Here, one can see the greatest number and variety of exhibits.

For the operation of NFT, a large number of instruments are arranged inside the building, including servers, cables, coolers and so on. The server is the most important instrument and has the largest number.

Facade & Stair

The building has a multilayered skin, which also includes stairs. The staircase is presented in the form of a gentle slope, which provides circulation for the interior of the building on the one hand, and connects the surrounding buildings on the other hand.

Revolution of The Old House

Time: Spring 2019

Location: Yantai, China

Type: Competiton (Solo Work)

Instructor: Zhiwen Zhang

The theme of the work comes from "Gu Yu Cup"Urban Renewal. After the development of the city, solutions on how to deal with the ancient residential areas existing in the city are proposed. The site is located in the city center of Yantai, a coastal city in China. Because of the historical value, this area cannot be demolished. So it has gradually become a village in the city. In order to activate this region, 4 severely damaged houses are selected for surface and structural renovation. The newly built hotel facilitates the influx of foreign people and gradually activates the cultural tourism industry in the zone.

Site Location

The site, Suochegnli, which fisrt emerged in Ming dynasty, develops into nowaday Yantai, one of the important Port cities in China, in over 700 years. Therefore, the site is not only the remains of traditional Chinese constructions, but a symbolic plot for combination of modern and history.

36

Typology

New structure mainly consists of the the original courtyard houses, adding with four new elements, box, yard, curve and ramp. Each element combines together to generate new forms which represent the innovative space, circulatino, coat and construction of new building.

Box + Curve Box + Ramp

Evolution

Depending on the previous typology, new specific formulas such as "addition" and "subtraction" was created, and then practical spaces generate. For each type of combination, three fundamental and transitive forms evolute based on basic "U+B","U+Y","B+C" and "B+R", and also included some subtraction. Finally, these 12 forms evolve into the new construction.

Integrate the Future

Time: Spring 2018

Location: Zhuhai, China

Type: Professional Project

Contribution: Concept Design, Mapping, Report Text

Supervisor: Yun Zhou

The design is located in Zhuhai and aims to build an urban living room integrating public cultural venues, citizens' leisure destinations, and innovative office spaces, and a new benchmark for international culture in the Bay Area. The design theme is fusion. The fushion of the environment refers to the response to the existing environment and the functions of the built building, and they are integrated with each other. The fushion of nature refers to the introduction of landscape into the building, creating a green space for people to communicate and activities inside. The fushion of elements refers to media and media, media and people, media and industry, media and technology.

Bulk Generation

Surroundings The retreat of the landscape platform also refers to the surrounding architectural form and the flow of people in the square.

Landscape Analysis

The bulk generation takes into account the compatibility of the external flow of people on the south and north sides of the site, then it has two urban display surfaces. After the tower is divided, the south is the office area and the north is the cultural area. Meanwhile, the curve of the facade is changed to echo the existing buildings in the site. The connecting body between the towers on both sides is a shared office area.

Design Chunk

From the most basic geometric images, specific façades are generated through digital calculations. During the production of the physical model, a new material called Corian was used. The inclusion of plastic and stone in Corian increases the material's ability to bend and increases the possibility of vairous façade. By Using Prototype, a buildable structure was made. The same structure is applied to Desgin Chunk, and the interior space is designed according to the desgin of the facade.

RENDER _ AXONOMETRIC/ SCALE: NTS 52 Hybrid Work Rendering

The Hybrid model consists of 3 different series, namely MET Breuer(Whitney Museum of Art _ Marcel Breuer) of Architecture, Transformer of Building system and Coolant Systems of Data system. In the process of combining three different elements, the facade and opening form of MET Breuer is kept on exterior of the hybrid model. Based on the size of the panel on the facade, a basic scale is brought to the entire model. Since the scale is based on the facade, the interior can be filled with elements from transformers and coolants that have been deformed in different scales many times. For example, the transformer presents in different scales and details, and comes into the interior structures. And the pipes of coolants become into the skin of the model, covering the facade.
