01 Drag Center

Architecture design of gallery Tutor: Emily Crompton, Kate Stott Individual work Location: Manchester,UK 2020.11-2021.05(BA3) 1,596 sqm The giving site is next to the Pankhurst center, an iconic site of women's activism, past and present. The first meeting of the movement that became known as the suffragettes took place in this house! Taken on board the spirits of feminism, I have proposed a place where drag queens and kings can celebrate their cultures without being judged. A spiral ramp is placed in the building to act as the runway for drag queens and kings to showcase their dresses, makeup, and moves. Bring them back to the good old underground New York days to collect those tens from the panel. The right-wing of the building is an exhibition of drag history to let people know more about drag culture and view this group with a non-discrimination attitude. The left-wing of the building is a rehabilitation center that provides necessary helps for people who are struggling with their identities. This proposal is one of its kind and shall improve the situation of drag people.

Design background

Drag Culture research Early days

''My wife would not allowe me to wear this custom to Xmas party because it will embarrass the family.'' --Hedda Lettuce Dad of two

Bring it up

Pose

Drag culture was tied with theatre and religious rites to fulfill female parts in play.

''The general public think a man in the dress is not manly enough.''

1972

Drag queens began performing in bars and spaces that specifically catered to gay people, like the Black Cat in San Francisco.

Drag found its way into pop culture as Divine scandalized audiences with her filthy character and became an icon along the way.

1980s ''People call me slut just because I wear what I want and show my body off.''

--Courtney Act Teenage girl

''I got bullied by my peers because I wear makeups and it seems unreasonable in their opinion.'' --Naomi Smalls Teenage boy

The issues in Drag scene

“Drag” meant trying to look as much like a woman as possible. It was a peak time for balls with categories.

The Misogyny

The Neglected

1984

RuPaul went to the stage of the March on Wa s h i n gto n to perform his hit song: Supermodel.

Vogue

It poured out of balls and onto the streets of New York City, with the annual Wigstock festival kicking off. 1993 2009

RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered on Logo TV.

Drag kings do not seem as much in the spotlight as d rag q u een s . People just don't find girls in trousers are 'Abnormal.'

"People told me I did not belong here just because I am a girl. We are just here to embrace and be in charge of our own femininity like everyone else."

The ballroom part uses mechanical ventilation such as HVAC. The other part of the building uses natural ventilation. The air gap between the facade of the ballroom also helps the natural ventilation. The rainwater harvesting system can help with saving energy.

Photovoltaic panels

The whole building will use natural light during the day and artificial light during the evening, especially the ballroom part since all the exciting activities are happening in the evening. The whole building will install an underfloor heating system to keep the user warm during cold weather.

02 Mayfield Community Apartment building in central manchester Tutor: John wood Individual work Manchester,UK 2019.12-2020.05(BA2) 971 sqm In the center of manchester, the regeneration of Mayfield is undertaken and expected to be finished in 10 years. Mayfield is a 24-acre brownfield site packed with heritage and the River Medlock flowing through its core. The new Mayfield community will have a 6.5-acre park, office buildings, a car park, and a significant public realm. The given site is just on the edge of the new development, between the car park and the student dormitories. The site is next to the campus and office building. Recent graduates who work around this area would need a place to stay since the student dormitories are no longer a choice. Given the fact that there is a housing shortage around that area, I proposed to build an apartment building to keep up with the new Mayfield.

03 Dreamland Concept design of Emotions

Individual work 2020.06-2020.09(Self-motivated) 2,500 sqm

We a l l d r e a m , b u t w hy d o w e d r e a m , a n d why do we dream like that? Is there a high intelligence creature behind this manipulating it? Are our actions being controlled as well? As technology developed, humans seemed to trap into electrical products, and they immersed themselves in the emotions it provided. They laugh at it, cry over it, and even unleash their anger towards it. Are they being manipulated by the creator of the internet? As an architect of higher civilization, I am trying to use the same way to control humans by architecture. I compress all the emotions extracted from the internet to this skyscraper- the dreamland. It will give humans the ultimate experience of different emotions through the changes of spaces. Those emotions will root into their heart and change their behaviors.

Design philosophy Issues on social media

The mastermind

Transfer into emotions

Anger make people to lose their mind. Anger

Pride let people to worship themselves and eventually fall because of their ego

Sloth

Lust make them addicted and inseparable from certain behaviors Lust

insert different emotions to theta waves to change the content of dreams

Sloth let people forget how to think and trapped into the small space

Emotions determines human reactions thus we can control human Greed

G re e d m a ke s p e o p l e want things that are out of their league.

Culture Renaissance Architecture design of culture center

Individual work Baku, Azerbaijan 2021.05-2021.07(Switch Competition) 25,213 sqm

As one of the most critical trade exchange channels, the Silk Road was also a “cultural bridge” between Asia and Europe. Trading activities along the Silk Road over many centuries facilitated the transmission not just of goods but also ideas and culture, promoting a socio-cultural economy. Today, we have diffused the idea of identity, culture, roots, and traditions, forgetting the ‘past’ and focusing on the idea of ‘future’ not realizing the damage that is being done to the ‘present’. To bring back the booming scene, I proposed a cultural center that includes places to trade and rest on the given site. Traditional Islamic architecture and modern style have been combined to link the past and the future. This center is standing on the silk road’s center to remind people never to forget where we come from and set new visions for the future.
