Campaign is geared towards getting the public to freely talk about family planning methods they adopt 378,397 adolescent girls in Kenya aged between 10-19 became pregnant between July 2016 and June 2017 More than 100 'pregnant men' today staged a peaceful demonstration in Nairobi's Central Business District to launch a family planning campaign. Dubbed “#Formnigani” translated to – what’s the plan in English, the campaign is geared towards creating awareness about family planning in the country. Currently,teenage pregnancy rate in Kenya stands at 18 per cent, implying that one in every five girls under the age of 20 has begun childbearing with early pregnancy being the leading cause of school dropouts or delayed education. According to the latest report on teenage pregnancies by the United Nations Populations Fund, 378,397 adolescent girls in Kenya aged between 10-19 became pregnant between July 2016 and June 2017. Currently, access to contraceptives is a constitutional right and according to the 2017 Health Act , Section 6(1) a that guarantees every adult Kenyan to the right tosage, effective, affordable and acceptable family planning services.
Hopefully, the movement will grow over the coming months with even more Kenyans showing their support for family planning in their local communities and on social media - through all the creative powers we have from music and dance to poetry, comedy and the visual arts. The campaign will deploy Kenyan voices using social media, music, art expression, local activations, sharing of personal stories and hosting events in a bid to drum up support for the campaign.
