The region is known for its history and cultural connection to the breeding of the distinctive Black Iberian pig, earning Ourique its title ‘Capital of the Black Pig’. These pigs are normally raised in a free-range or semi-free-range environment, which contributes to their unique flavour, and highquality meat, making them a significant part of local cuisine.

Ourique also has a special place in Portuguese history. Afonso I (Afonso Henriques), the first King of Portugal, led his forces to victory against the Moors at Ourique, known as the Battle of Ourique in 1139. This win was a crucial step toward Portugal’s independence and the eventual establishment of the nation as it is known today.
