FUJIAN SONG CI MEMORIAL

SUMMER, 2023 UNIT: BEIJING INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECUTRAL DESIGN (BIAD)

02

ORIGINAL CONCEPTS "Rules and circles" simple, solemn, imitation of nature The project is located on the east side of Songci New Village, Chongluo Township, surrounded by mountains and the narrow valley of Qinxi (later Chongxi). The surrounding buildings are mainly white walls and black tiles, with three rooms and three floors as the common feature. Starting from Song Ci's tomb, passing through the newly built memorial park, Song Ci Square and up to Yanshan Mountain, an unobstructed line of sight is formed. The orientation of the building is consistent with the direction of local roads and villages, while appropriately imitating the surrounding patchwork and adapting to local conditions. The overall landscape water system is formed through the combination of points, lines and surfaces, which coincides with the superior Feng Shui conditions of the project "Lexi Blessed Land"; the water body is widely planted with white lotus, echoing the landscape of Song Ci Cemetery, and coincides with the spiritual theme of honesty and integrity. Create an ecological parking lot through green plants and grass-planted permeable bricks, making the static traffic space become part of the landscape square.

Song Ci Tomb

Front area - Song Ci Memorial Garden and the cemetery on the east side are connected

through the "251" Wuyishan National Park Scenic Byway, which makes the theme of the entire project clear. The Chinese Forensic Science Museum is located on the north side of the Song Ci Memorial Garden, and together with the Song Ci Memorial Garden, they form an exhibition complex. The two are connected through the exhibition gallery and the lounge, forming an overall exhibition flow line - starting from the Song Ci Memorial Garden to highlight the theme, extending backward to the exhibition of the development and achievements of forensic science.

Back area - The east and west areas of the Song Ci Cultural Tourism Study Center are built on the east and west sides of the road respectively. The two are connected to the city as a whole through a street corridor, forming a study tour building complex.

A core landscape courtyard is formed between the front area and the back area,

which not only functions as a separation and buffer between the front and rear areas, but also forms the horizontal axis of the first-phase construction building layout in terms of spatial structure, while integrating with the agricultural landscape area to the east.

Yan Mountain

AXIS FACE WINDOW

The building complex basically follows the central axis of the land and is arranged in an L shape. The location of the building incorporates the relationship of "circle, square and square" into the design, and maintains the tendency of all buildings to face the Yanshan Mountain in Fudi, Lexi, forming a pattern of "Xiushan in the direction". The Song Ci Memorial Hall and the Song Ci Cultural Tourism Research Center form a semienclosed courtyard, surrounded by mountains and water, and the pool echoes the lotus pond in Song Ci Cemetery. Large-area glass windows or open platforms are set up in the yellow-marked area to ensure a view of farmland, protected land, artificial lakes, villages and other landscapes.

PEOPLE VEHICLE

The vehicle traffic flow line is organized along the outer edge of the site through the 251" Wuyishan National Park Scenic Road on the south side of the site and the road on the west side of the site. Two ecological parking lots for external and internal services are arranged in the north and south squares to meet the needs of vehicle traffic flow. The smoothness and convenience of the line will not affect the activities of people inside the venue. Pedestrian circulation lines form independent loops within the site. Through the inward garden landscape belt, the outward pastoral landscape belt, the square and the courtyard on both sides of the building complex, they jointly form an external pedestrian loop with a clear and orderly space and different scenery as you move forward.

WHEN THE RUBBER HITS THE ROAD

SPRING, 2023 INSTRUCTOR: MILES GERTLER GROUPMATE: YIBO WANG, JIAYI LI

SIGNIFICANT POINTS Funeral processions are a physical manifestation of the vision of empire projected to the world by the royal family. The Queen's funeral procession was held in London, with the procession starting from Westminster Hall, passing through Westminster Abbey, and ending at Buckingham Palace. Distancing the races and highlighting the nobility of European blood was one of the means of domination of the colonies during the colonial period. There can be found four ways of colonization: trade circle, infrastructural development, religion, and military. Upon arrival at their destination, the slaves faced class distribution.Slave owners preferred to distinguish each laborer by their clothing as opposed to memorizing their faces. The most intuitive feeling of the funeral procession is the etiquette and rules. The royal rituals included in the procession range from the decorative materials on top of the uniform to the order of walking in the procession. This red tape on the one hand expresses the level of respect for the Queen, on the other hand highlights the special nature of royalty. But the racial segregation caused by colonialism was the opposite of the equality of all people sought by modern society.

08

The British royal family was a participant in the building of the empire long before colonialism, and while much of the empire was lost in the process of modernization and decolonization, the royal family remained and became the most influential participant in the surviving colonial living fossils. By emphasizing materials, orders, exclusive standards, and the royal majesty displayed in the parade, the Royal Family kept pulling the world’s memories back to the 19th century. This projected impression in the mind is used to delay the fading of the empire in the spiritual world.

The loss of economic supremacy had a direct impact on the global influence from the voice of the Crown. But the demise of the colonial economic model is a historical trend, and the decline of the empire and the royal family is inevitable. Public opinion polls in the UK have shown that public support and favorability for the British royal family has fluctuated around the time of the Queen's death, and that the rationality of the constitutional monarchy has been long considered and questioned in the UK. Commonwealth countries and some colonial countries can be said to be in stark contrast to the Queen's grand funeral, with particularly sharp reactions from the African and Indian regions.

09

Empire noun [ C ]

1. an extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority, formerly especially an emperor or empress 2. effective control, whether formal or informal, of a subordinated society by an imperial society

People can use physical substances to simulate historical scenes, thus creating a psychological illusion of traveling through time. We argue that the elements that make up the Queen’s funeral procession are tools used to maintain the aristocratic model of the city of London and the surface phantasmagoria of empire. The royal family is the projector and the funeral procession is its projected vision of the empire, a visual effect, but when the colonial powers are also the audience of this film, the procession turns into an exhibition of British colonial history. Exhibits included in the exhibition made up the funeral procession. By showing all the aspects that the procession encompasses, our world map becomes the introductory booklet to this exhibition of British colonial history.

Geometry Diagram

Geometry Diagram

The project asked to design a series of spaces within the form of columns with a square section using only vertical surfaces and openings. I was originally inspired by the traditional game Klotski, and soon extended to the idea of sorting and combining according to the size of the space and the height. The largest room is higher and more central, and vice versa.

This exercise was similar to the previous one, but the design was changed to a rectangular space with a larger height difference. I took the jungle tree house and the skywalk as a reference, and connected and separated the space with flat stairs. It can be seen from the plan view that the hexagon is derived from the tree crown shyness phenomenon in the jungle. The hexagons provided the geometric basis for subsequent designs.

12

CONCEPT Following the location logic of the first two exercises, I replaced the rectangle with a hexagonal shape and constructed a beehive-like axisymmetric building. These rooms are interconnected by spiral staircases. Different sizes of space can achieve different functions. The height difference is used to integrate the indoor and outdoor areas. Part of the columns are hidden between the walls, while the others becomes the central visual support. Rooms are divided and arranged based on functions. Hexagon provides both steady and shifty atmospheres for study or social space. It is a low-key tiny universe inbetween city buildings. Plan - ground

TOWER: WOODEN LIGHTHOUSE

SPRING, 2022 INSTRUCTOR: NICHOLAS HOBAN

15

CONCEPT The project aims to explore the parametric design based on simple shape. This 120-floored tower was developed from pentagon and at the same time, inspired by some Chinese styles. The texture of shade has reference to Qingming (Pure Brightness), one of the twenty-four traditional solar terms in China, an appropriate time for spring outing. The surface is expressed with pattern on Mylar. It is part of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, a famous Chinese painting by Zhang Zeduan from Song dynasty.

16

MODEL PHOTO

The tower uses the "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" as a cover, focusing on the interaction between the internal lighting and the external frosted skin. It is no longer a metal tower with a cold texture, but a beacon with warm wooden tones.

TAIPUSI BANNER EXHIBITION HALL TAIPUSI BANNER EXHIBITION HALL

CONCEPT

Taipusi Banner Rural Revitalization Exhibition Hall, with a building scale of approximately 4,000 square meters, is used to exhibit light industrial products. Inspired by the traces formed by ruts driving through the grassland, seven exhibition halls are divided, and the moving lines circulate freely. The double-rutted grassland road symbolizes "carrying on the past and opening up the future". When viewed from above, the layout looks like petals blooming, echoing the local rose industry. The skin part is taken from Shitiao Mountain, a famous scenic spot in Taipusi Banner, and functionally plays a role in enhancing natural lighting.

TORONTO'S YELLOWBELT: GARAGE

FALL, 2020 INSTRUCTOR: MICHAEL PIPER

19

SITE ANALYS Each student was assigned a 2kmX2km area of the city that is covered mostly by detached houses. My area was near the Downsview Airport. Based on the different location of the garage in relation to the main house, I divided these houses into four categories: single-floor house contains the garage, house contains the garage, house with a detached garage and house with garage protruding from the wall.

20

CONTENT The garage attached tightly with the house is easy for people to move baggage betweem the car and the house. It also has the prevention of burglary. However, inside garage especially for single-floor house it also leads to indoor noise and the hidden danger of fire. New design add more space possibilities in up and down way--underground garage or second floor. In contrast, garage which has a distance from the house provide a quite isolated place and noninterderence of safety, it also allow some activities. But it would be hard for winter in Toronto when there is heavy snow. Based on observation of the district, it can be founded that these backyards are tend to be congested. New extension takes consideration of honest connection between dwelling space and loft.

(Isometric view)

21

(Perspective view)

According to the pros and cons of the existing occupancy and maintenance, I designed a small extension to each house.

Old version (Yung Sing Pastry Shop)

The project was aim to build a specific archive for the urban leftover building, including but no limited to histoty, photos, interviews, maps, and architectural images. Finally, we made a zine.

CONTRAST

22 Baldwin Street 22 Baldwin Street is a 2.5 storey Gothic Revival houseform building located on the north side of Baldwin Street between McCaul Street and Henry Street in the Baldwin Village neighbourhood of Toronto. 22 Baldwin Street was one of the first properties built on the north side of Baldwin Street. Between 1968 and 2009/2010, 22 Baldwin Street was home to the Yung Sing Pastry Shop. The Yung Sing Pastry Shop was established by Chu Ko and was Toronto's first Hong Kong style bakery. Since 2009/2010, the Yung Sing Pastry Shop and 22 Baldwin Street have been "under renovation." The future of the restaurant and building is uncertain at present. INTERSTICE JOURNAL 100 days of observation and notes based on repeated field trip can building an archive. The diary avoids theory and presents a chronological order. In addition, recording time and questions automatically give the fieldwork diary a fragmented nature.

"Interstice" means an intervening space, especially a very small one between something. Walking among streets of Harbord Village, whcih can be identified as a neighbour block for the university, we founded a secret little world. The gap shows the side of the house and leaves a space between each house. It is the boudary and connection, supernumerary part of the house, alley or storage. What’s inside the gap? What’s on the wall? What’s on the ground? Trees, bushes, bicycles, hoses, chairs, pipes, and trash bin.

I keep asking my self: Useful or Useless? Neglected or Guarded? Snooping? Revealing? Leading? When we are looking at those interstices, what are we looking for?

Man and the natural world are interdependent and mutually influential, and people can only continue surviving with the existing material resources provided by nature and ecosystems. What do we want to see?

…Those gaps, those dark, quiet but various gaps, they must have something to say.

SEIZE THE DAY

I insist on catching the change of sky all year in different seasons and weathers. The same angle provides a stable len for constant trace and records. During four years of study (2020 I move back to China due to the pandemic), I changed my residence three time from Chestnut Street to Wood Street. Everyday I stand facing the same window, and I pray with my eyes.
