1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE For the topic of Point Line Plane, I use lines in plane to create a surface. Inspired by the columns built in Japanese water temple. The columns beyond the curved wall create beautiful shadows. And the Church of St. John in Switzerland. The design combined the horizontal columns on the wall with the lines on the ground. The concave wall was formed by different layers of lines. In my model, one small square plane peeled out from a big square. And filled with sticks to create a plane.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

I was inspired by the Sliced Porosity Block built in China. This architecture interest me because the frame turns into infill and make a difference with the surrounding regular structure. In my design, I used the same concept, use frame as infill. In the middle of each surface, there is a square infilled irregularly by frame. Besides, I use 3 folded, 4 folded, and 5 folded paper infill the frame to represent the wall of a architecture. Translucent roof makes sun light mild and warm inside.

1.3 MASS In the topic of mass, we use dark to represent light. Showing contrast of mass and void. In my mass drawing, By using gaps to create different density of light. Stairs on the bottom give an experience of walking up and down. People can choose to stay in dark or sit under light.

In the research of herring island, I found there is a highway at the North of the island. (as shown in the left image) That cause a noise pollution to the surrounding area. In addition, I draw a diagram of people movement on Herring Island. I found most people move around sculptures and the gallary, not much people stay at the grassy land locate at south of the island. To keep away from the crowed and noise pollution, I choose the grassy land to be my site. Another reason is, there are no trees on the grassy land, so build a pavillion here can avoid cutting to much trees, keep environment of Herring Island sustainable.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

Curved hair band reminds me of ‘point line and plane’ concept. I used the folding hair band to make a shape and create a plane. The shape formed a space can be used to hide secrets. I made the ‘wall‘ in different height, create different fellings of walking in pavillion.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

When I start to make the model, I found it’s difficult to find out the size of each piece of wood. So I sketch the model, then calculate how big is each piece of wood. After stick them together, I realise my pavilion need a roof to shade it from sun and rain. So I made a translucent roof. There are two roofs on each part, I was put one on the ground as an inclined shading originally. However, I found that shading doesn’t work well, thus I arrange them as normal roof finally.

4.0 REFLECTION

Earth studio is interesting and useful to improve our skills. Model making skills, presentation skills and we learnt how to use charcoal to draw, to represent light and dark. I can see my improvement throughout the semester. At start, I found presentation is pretty challenge to me. I stuttered in presentation even I prepared for that. And feeling very nervous to speak in front of the whole class. With practice (we have presentation every two week), presentation comes much easier for me. In the section of Frame and Infill, there was a failure in transport them to school, that is the reason why the model looks not so well. So next time, I will pay more tention on transport them. And take good photos after I made them at home. In the last part, the secrets pavilion. I put most of my time on making models. Due to my model making skills is better than my sketching and digital model making. So I will keep working on how to make models in Rhino or CAD, and photoshop them in the site. I think that will useful in my later study. Overall, earth studio in this semester is not easy, but useful and interesting.
