Children's Village Exhibition Design Academic Work, Advanced studio, Fall 2019 Instructor: Douglas Flandro Individual Work
Design an exhibition for the children's museum with the theme of mathematics and patterns
Design Concept & Proposal The project is located at the Children's Museum of Providence. The client wanted a math and pattern-themed exhibition for children age 3-8 on the second floor of the museum. Based on research, a series of math-related activities for children were selected and then cataloged into 4 groups: games, role play fair, color and light installation, and reading. When it came to the way to host these activities, I was inspired by a book regarding the intimate feeling between the human scale and the old cities. The cities nowadays are too large and cold for the human scale, not to mention the kids. I came up with the idea to build a village for the children that suit their scale.

The walls and roofs of the houses can host activities sorted by age. For the play house cluster, the houses are connected with openings for the kids to crawl and explore. The other houses are separate, leaving possibilities to rearrange them in the future. Compared to the relatively close feeling in the houses, the hills provide open areas and resting seats for the parents.
A Game Example: “Pick Your Own” Children can grab a basket and pick the “fruits” from the tree then make their own pattern on the wall. The colored pieces have magnets behind that can be attached to the tree or the house. This practice encourages kids to sort, collect and create.

An example of the color and light installation: the walk-in kaleidoscope and the color wheel. When the wheels are turned by people, the color of them will change and then the reflection in the kaleidoscope will also change. It is an interactive and immersive experience for both the kids and parents. On the right is a physical model for this idea.

The RFP: Immersive Installations room.
How High Can You Build?
Great Pyramid at Giza 146.6 m
The idea is to make this immersive space a place where kids can really play with forms. There are four ball pools filled with four different sponge forms: cylinder, sphere, cube, and pyramid. With the instructions in the graphic panels, parents and children can play with the foams such as build a tower, put the sponge form on the conveyor belt and see how it may slide down. Collet, Sort & Fit The different shapes and colors also encourage the kids to collect and sort them, they can also fit the foams into the openings on the wall to feel the shapes and create a pattern.

Time Travel with USS Constitution Exhibition design
Academic Work, Advanced studio, Fall 2019 Instructor: Douglas Flandro Individual Work
Design an exhibition for the timeline of the USS Constitution
USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. She is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. In this project, the client wanted to revise the timeline exhibition in the USS Constitution museum. The concept is time travel.Visitors are guided by neon strips in the dark showroom to learn the history of USS Constitution in chronological order. The blue light embedded in the wall leads a detailed timeline, and the pink light leads people through a series of interactions. Through the porthole, one can see the USS Constitution at that time.

Adaptive Reuse Academic Work, Advance studio, Spring 2019 Instructor: Caterina Tiazzoldi Area: 4000 square feet Individual Work
Reuse an abandoned structure on the sea shore of City Island, NY.
SITE ANALYSIS
Existing condition The project is located on the gateway to City Island, NY. As the coast is mostly privately owned, the island lacks public approaches to the sea. The community hopes to build a public facility where citizens can relax and kayak.

Ways to observe the oysters
In recent years, efforts have been made to purify water by reintroducing oysters into the sea. Oysters can filter seawater, reduce the impact of storms on the coast, and improve biodiversity. As a tourist destination for seafood, a lot of oyster shells are discarded every day. Oyster larvae need to grow on rough surfaces, and oyster shells are the ideal natural base. This forms a perfect closed loop on the city island as shown. People can learn about oysters and see the process of artificially setting larvae in the indoor workshop. The seashore area consists of floating decks, which also have resting areas for kayak, bird island, and oyster observation area.

Adaptive reuse Academic Work, Intro to Design Studio, 2018.11 Instructor: Stefano Corbo Area: 3080 square feet Individual Work
Transform an existing space occupied by CVS pharmacy to a food-related public space.
SITE SECTION
SITE & BUILDING The site of this project is located in downtown Providence, right next to the main traffic hub Kennedy Plaza. This building was built in 1948 and was originally used as a bank. It now consists of CVS pharmacy, offices, and rental apartments. This adaptive reuse project focuses on the CVS pharmacy store located on the ground floor and the basement. One of the most special features of this store is that it is used as a corridor to the square, especially in the cold winters of Providence.

Renovation of the Terrace Interior Design/ Renovation Personal Work, 2015. 05 Material: Recycled wood and other recycled materials, paint Dimension: Size of the terrace 4m*8m Teamwork with family
This project is a renovation of the terrace on the third floor of my house.
Our house Built in 2002, my family and I have lived here for 14 years. We hoped that the terrace could be a space for activities. So my mother once built a small tea room with timber on the terrace. However, the tea room was not suitable for a long stay due to the strong sunlight. The cabin was abandoned gradually.
Problems We have to renovate the terrace: • It was turning old due to long-term exposure to weather. • It was a waste of space. • Due to the direct sunlight exposure of the terrace, rooms in the second floor were hot in summer. The cooling system caused energy waste.
New space needs stairwell

• A space for BBQ, with a simple kitchen. • A garden for potted flowers. • A space where we could spend the afternoon in reading in soft wind.

Proposal Temperature lowering: we added a shed with a sun shade roofing sheet on the terrace. Plus the heatabsorbing function of the earth in the garden, the direct sunlight to the floor was effectively reduced. In this way, the temperature of the second floor was lowered. Plants: in addition to the potted flowers, we also planted vegetables fond of sunlight. The vegetables can go directly to our dining table in the BBQ area.

Rain in Bamboo Forest Installation
Academic Work, Composite Communication 2016.01 Material: Bamboo, Mixed Material Dimension: 1 m*2 m*2 m Teamwork “since 1984 Award
Design an immersive dark space to convey a feeling without visual techniques.
Concept & Research We sense the environment by five senses, then we make a response with behaviors and thus change the environment. Inspired by a poem, we chose “Rain” as our topic. We brainstormed on impressions on rain and found out that hearing and touch are the primary senses that affect humans’ feelings about rain.
Technique & Material Exploration
Raindrops on leaves
The discomfort of wet clothes
Wood sticks hung by a spring hitting the floor
Raindrops hitting the carport
Wearing rain boots to step on puddles
The steel rod filled with granules
To find the best way to express “Purification & Calmness”, we began experimenting with various materials. The sound of bamboos colliding with each other perfectly met our expectations. The bamboo was sawed into small segments and then string together. Then we did more exploration on different lengths and parts of the bamboo.

Water Footprint Exhibition Graphic Design
Professional Work 2016 Beijing Design Week--751 Kids Design Week, 2016.10 Material: water, recyclable plastic bags Dimension: exhibition area of about 20 square meters Teamwork, “Best Educational Design Award in the 2016 Beijing Design Week
Designed by the Zii Team, this exhibition is about water-saving.
60 Wanyue Qiao
In our daily life, 96.2% water was consumed in unseen cases. We came up with the concept of water footprint and told a story of unseen water resources. We circled a space with water bags. In this way, we conveyed the idea of the consumed water amount through the illustrations and words on the water bags. The illustrations were also made into stickers as gifts for the children. Design with zero waste: The concept of water saving was through the whole exhibition. After the exhibition, the water bags were used for watering the flowers and lawn. An example of the words on the bags: "The jeans you wear consumed water equivalent to 10000 water bags during the production".
