Fall 2014 Speaking Up

A part of Women At Risk, International’s mission is to give voice to the silenced cries of the oppressed. Through the shared stories of many women, we continue to learn the ways in which they are silenced: threats, fear, violence, shame. It is our privilege to speak up on their behalf, raising awareness about the struggles they face and encouraging others to join us in rescuing, restoring, and empowering those at-risk. Will you be a voice for the voiceless? Will you stand up for the oppressed and their right to live and work with safety and dignity? Together, we can wrap arms of love and whisper messages of hope and worth in the hearts of millions.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31: 8

Beautiful and Cozy – Scarves that Rescue!

Daughters of Pakistan

Under Pakistan’s strict Islamist rule, an education is off-limits to most young girls. Yet one group of courageous mothers has found a way to bravely educate their daughters. Gathering together under the guise of “making scarves” they stitch and dye colorful fabrics while their daughters secretly learn to read and write. When you wear this scarf remember the girls in Pakistan who are blossoming into bright, educated women ready to make a difference in their society.

Use Your Voice! Two moms were walking the dark streets of China’s red light district. There they learned that many of the women had been scammed into prostitution with the promise of stable jobs or lured in while looking for work to support their families. Soon China Outreach was born. The two moms continued to enter the red light districts, bringing a light to this dark place, reaching out to the women, and building a program for them. Now our partners provide shelters, medical checkups and treatment, crisis pregnancy counseling, vocational training, employment, and more. If a woman cannot come to them, our partners meet her where she’s at— whether it be on the streets, inside a brothel, or in a prison cell. Our partners even meet with the mafia, pimps, and brothel owners, knowing that their change of heart will lead to even greater change for the women. They have seen the closing of brothels and the expansion of their outreach in new regions. In places where women are deceived into a life of darkness, our partners offer them a life in the light. Your purchase helps these women find safety, hope, and true healing. Speak Up Necklace 32” # 103627

Woven Works – India

While great strides have been taken to address poverty in India, there are still many who find themselves drowning in it. They are the “unhirables,” culturally held down by caste, physical limitations, health, or religion. Left without a chance of employment, they are poverty stricken and therefore at increased risk. That is why Woven Works is all about what they call “people profit.” People profit is about hiring the “unhirables,” empowering them to rise above the limitations forced upon them and enabling them to become thriving economic contributors.

Reservation & Zuni Christian Mission School

Located in Northwestern New Mexico, Zuni Pueblo is home to the Zuni Tribe of Native American people. WAR’s partner has been working to serve the Zuni community for over 100 years. Jewelry making is one of the main sources of income in the Zuni community, but the lack of local work opportunity has meant that over one-third (36%) of people and over half (51%) of children continue to live below the poverty level. Your purchase here supports a quality education at our partner’s school and allows Zuni artisans better opportunity to support themselves and their families.

Thai Safe-House: Samaritan Creations Kay and her husband are from different parts of the world, but both of their hearts were broken for the women of her country. Together they began a ministry to offer hope and healing to Thai women trapped in the sex trade. Every week they reach out to the women in the bars, slowly building trust and relationships. They offer the women an opportunity to make a living in a safe place, free of abuse and debt bondage. If they join the program, they are offered counseling, child care, and vocational training. Safehouse staff is dedicated to walking alongside the women on the journey toward healing. As the women progress in the program, they become co-owners in the safehouse jewelry business, and they are empowered to begin their own micro-businesses, continue their education, and return to their villages to cultivate change. Today these women are no longer owned, but are independent, confident business owners. They work with dignity, provide for their families, and become ambassadors of hope to their own communities.
