Summer is a celebration of freedom.
We find freedom from winter as we shed our bulky layers and feel the warmth of sun on our skin. We celebrate the freedom of our nation as we plan our 4th of July fireworks, picnics, and parades. But we also remember those who are still longing for freedom. Throughout these pages we will celebrate stories of rescue and hope. Will you join us? Meet the Artist: Thom
As the oldest child, Thom was expected to support her family—not just her own child, but also her mother, siblings, and grandparents, too. Thom desperately wanted to go to school, but her mother’s debt forced her to work instead. On three different occasions, Thom rejected her mother’s request for her to work in the bars. Finally, Thom was abandoned by her family in the red light district. With no other choice, Thom began working as a bar girl. She began drinking to numb the fear and pain. Thom hated her life. When staff from the safehouse visited her, she began to trust that they were good people. Thom finally found freedom when she joined the safehouse. She started learning English and discovered her talent for designing jewelry and clothing. Today Thom is the main jewelry designer and the “right hand” of the program director. She trains those at the safehouse and regularly reaches out to women trapped in the red light district. Thom is a woman empowered, working to rescue and empower women like her.

Thai Safehouse Partner: At a time in life when most people are finally beginning to slow down and retire, our precious partners are just getting started. After realizing that hundreds of thousands of lives are being destroyed through the sex trade industry in Thailand, they founded a safe-house where the wounded can come to find healing and wholeness. Once rescued, the young men and women receive shelter, food, vocational training and schooling. They leave empowered and equipped to live in freedom and work with dignity.

Meet the Artist: Kumari
Kumari had never known a family. She was orphaned as an infant, and at seven years old she bought the lies of those who promised love and protection. But then they betrayed and abused Kumari, selling her night after night to strangers. She contemplated and attempted suicide. When Kumari came to Higher Ground at sixteen, she hardly believed there was hope or anyone she could trust. But the staff first gave her a home—a safe place from those who owned and controlled her. They taught her how to make jewelry, offering hope of a different lifestyle. As Higher Ground formed a circle of protection around Kumari, for the first time she found hope, healing, and a true family.
