The Different Types of Silk Fabrics No one can deny the sensual beauty and sophistication related to silk fabric. This fabric is sensuous and excludes class and quality. Manufacturers take into account the different types and quality of silk for manufacturing purposes. Different varieties come with their specific characters and benefits for ensuring the best use. Charmeuse This is considered the traditional silk variety; the weave of shimmery satin presented in this kind of fabric makes it a favorite one among users. The back portion resembles crepe fabric and remains somewhat flattened. The main use of charmeuse silk is related to the manufacturing of scarves, lingerie, and blouses among other kind of materials. Dupion silk Another variety is the beautiful Dupion silk fabric. This double thread variety is prepared from two silkworms that form a cocoon together. The result is rough yarn showing irregularity related to weight and sheerness. It has a coarse feel and there is presence of black specks in between due to regional cocoon. This gives Dupion silk its characteristic features and users should never mistake it with a weaving defect. The lustrous and strong characters of this kind of silk fabric lend it an unmistakable charm.

Chiffon This is another common silk type that we find around us with much propensity. Fabric stores use chiffon with high regularity. This light, matte fabric contains finely twisted yarn and the spacing in between gives it a sheer transparent feel. Fabric billows lends each garment prepared with this material a definite dimension, providing for an attractive look. Except in scarves, chiffon creations require presence of backing or lining. Fuji silk Fuji silk is another silk variety made using spun fibers. The fabric is medium in weight having a soft luster with lavish feel. To many it may be a reminder of top-notch suede materials. It features a fluid draping and this material is long lasting and resistant to wrinkles. Noil silk Noil silk is simply raw silk fabric. Short fibers go towards the making of this silk variety post carding and combing. As a result, the shine of regular silk fiber is absent in this case. This kind of fabric is highly versatile with a rough surface and matte finish. The presence of off-white color and subtle specks on the body of this fabric distinguishes it from other types easily. It looks maybe similar to cotton fabric but it is smoother and durable - ideal for the creation of travel dresses because of its ease of care. Tussah Silk This is another silk type also called ‘Shantung’. It is a wild variety prepared from silkworm cocoons developing on Juniper and oak trees. The fiber developed from this kind of silk is of a coarse variety and lacks the richness and luster related to fiber acquired from controlled environments. It comes in a natural color of creamy tan and this variety is resistant to the dying process. Airy and lightweight, this keeps the wearer cool in the summer days. This is a popular buy at the fabric store because garments made from them lend themselves to rough use.
