Happy New Year! It seems somewhat late to say that, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to do so in our first newsletter of 2022. I love the optimism at the start of a new year, with new year health kicks, resolutions and plans for the future. That optimism is definitely needed at the moment as we find ourselves far from freed from the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic one year on from our second national lockdown. Nonetheless, the differences in the impact for schools and children this Winter compared to last year are stark. Firstly, we were able to rapidly establish an Asymptomatic Testing Site at the school to test the students prior to their return to school. This enabled us to ensure isolation for a number of students who tested positive despite being asymptomatic. I would like to acknowledge and thank the incredible team of volunteer staff who manned the Asymptomatic Testing Site – yet again testing well over a thousand

students, processing and recording the results to support our safe return to school. Their work has secured manageable numbers of COVID-19 cases upon on our return and seen our cases continue to decline so far this term. Another factor in this has been the excellent response of our students to enhanced wearing of face coverings in school and your continued support of twice weekly self-testing at home. Thank you for the part you continue to play as parents and carers in enabling the school to remain open, whilst still managing the spread of the virus within our school community. In my last newsletter before Christmas, I talked about changes being made to enhance our COVID19 measures with the introduction of face coverings in school ahead of the announcement of the government’s Plan B measures. Since then, the figures for COVID-19 have rapidly increased and now started to decline, vaccinations and booster

Page 2

vaccines have been ramped up, face coverings been recommended in classrooms, as well as communal areas, and more information about the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has come to light. As I write now, it is following the announcement by the Prime Minister that Plan B measures are to cease, face coverings are no longer required in classrooms and, from next Thursday, no longer required in communal spaces. To say that things move fast feels something of an understatement! However, I feel optimistic that we are moving towards greater normality again. As a parent of a student in Year 11 this year, I appreciate how challenging the uncertainty regarding whether Year 11 and 13 will sit examinations is for parents and students alike. The current picture indicates that they are more than likely to go ahead, and I think as teachers, parents, carers and students, we should plan, prepare and support with that in mind. While we have been

Page 3

taught in recent years that nothing is certain, the process of teacher assessed grades in the absence of external examinations will require much the same of the students and we will be ready and able to change to this and support the students should that be required. Finally, recent weeks and the contents of this newsletter show the incredible resilience of students, the staff, and our school community to keep going despite the challenges and uncertainty we have faced. The focus on Modern Languages in this edition shows how we continue to widen the horizons of students at Warlingham in the classroom and beyond our shores with the life-skill of another language and insight into another culture. Moreover, it is great to see the students experience success on the sports field and provided with such an array of extra-curricular opportunities to enrich their school experience.

Thank you for your adaptability, patience, understanding and support of the school. I look forward to what the new term and year have in store for our school community and wish you and your families a happy and successful year ahead.

. We are delighted to focus on the Modern Foreign Languages Department in this issue of the newsletter. Here you will find highlights of what’s going on in French and Spanish.

Key Stage 3 We are so proud of our students and their Courage, Commitment and Kindness in their language studies. After our first term they are now able to produce and infer language on the following topics:

French Year 7 about themselves and their school. Year 8 about their free time and a visit to Paris. Year 9 about their adolescent life and keeping fit. Spanish

Year 7 about themselves, their siblings and their free time. Year 8 about their past holidays. Year 9 their likes and dislikes and about jobs they would like to do in the future.

Last term, our students were also introduced to different Christmas celebrations & French customs. Year 8 Paris Trip Dates: Monday 11th July – Friday 15th July 2022 Travel: Coach and Ferry Hotel: Dream Castle Highlights: Central Paris attractions including the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, River Seine, the Palace of Versailles and not forgetting Disneyland Paris! The trip is about much more than just the activities; the desired outcome is that all pupils fully engage themselves in Paris’ rich culture, and that they experience life in another country having the opportunity to try out their language skills.

Page 6

...Modern Languages Upcoming assessments Year 9 have just completed their Key Assessment Points (KAPs). Year 7 and Year 8 will be assessed in a few weeks time when they will have finished their Destination Question.

Modern Foreign Languages Intent We believe Modern Foreign Languages widen horizons. Language opens windows and enables exploration. Another language is another vision of the world through which students understand themselves better. The MFL intent is for every Warlingham Learner to be able to show:

Courage

By developing and producing language in the

classroom, with an equal focus on the key skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Building a fearless attitude to learning and communicating in another language.

Commitment

to the continuing development of transferable

skills. Improving one’s literacy ability through learning a language will not only help further their understanding of other subjects and one's own language but will help build a strong skillset for future employment.

Kindness

Learning a language is discovering a whole new

culture, connecting people from all over the world, helping to form stronger relationships. This exposure to diversity builds a strong respectful welcoming community in the school and beyond.

...Modern Languages Trips Spanish Salamanca Trip

Bordeaux French Exchange Trip

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we ran a trip to Salamanca for our Key Stage 4 & 5 students studying Spanish. We very much hope we can run the trip in January 2023 if restrictions permit.

In previous years before the COVID-19 pandemic, we have run an exchange trip for our Key Stage 4 & 5 students studying French to Bordeaux. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we have not been in a position to run this trip but we very much hope it can go ahead in September 2022.

Stay: Students stay with families - 2 or 3 students per family. Each meal is taken with the family. Study: Students go to school each morning and have grammar and conversation lessons all in Spanish. Explore: In the afternoon, students enjoy exploring Salamanca and absorbing the culture for example a visit of the city and salsa lessons.

Students benefit from being partnered with a French student and staying with their family in Bordeaux for a week where they get the opportunity to integrate into family life, as well as enjoy excursions to explore the local area including the sand dunes in Archachon and the beautiful city of Bordeaux. In March 2023, it is hoped that the students’ French exchange partners will come to stay with their family in England. The French exchange partners will experience life in England with time spent at Warlingham School & Sixth Form College, as well as a sightseeing trip to London.

Page 9

. Key Stage 5 There are many good reasons to study languages at A level, including the skills you'll learn, the travel opportunities, the career paths you can take and the business advantages. We are delighted to have classes in both Year 12 and Year 13 for French and Spanish. Our students continue on their language journey and acquire a deeper understanding and knowledge of the following topics:

French/Spanish identity.

Cultural heritage.

Year 13 Multiculturalism in Francophone /Hispanic society ✓

Immigration

Racism

Coexistence of cultures

Aspects of political life in the Francophone / Hispanic world ✓

Young people today, citizens of tomorrow

Monarchies and dictatorships

Popular movements

Year 12 Aspects of Francophone/Hispanicspeaking society ✓

During the “La Haine” study session, we were given useful information about the techniques, language and context used in the film. I hadn’t considered some of the points they made, so I found it helpful. We were also tasked with creating our own ideas surrounding the film and tested our pre-existing knowledge of it.

Spanish Trip to British Film Institute On Tuesday 18th January, our A level Spanish students went to the British Film Institute on the South Bank in London. The study day provided an introduction to director Pedro Almodóvar’s themes and styles to watch Almodóvar on the edge: all about his films.

Page 11

A few weeks ago, I took part in a session ran by the BFI about “La Haine”, a film we study as part of our French A level. The film discusses important topics, such as racism and police brutality, and the session gave me a chance to consider different views on how the director, Mathieu Kassovitz, conveys these topics and how it is still relevant today (as the film was made in 1995). The session was great to participate in as there were activities to complete covering the language and techniques used in the film and this has given me the knowledge to further expand my own ideas in my essays. The presenter spoke entirely in French too, which was challenging but fun! Mia Frith 13B/Fr1

. Last term, we held a number of events to promote the Modern Foreign Languages department. Here is a snapshot of what went on... Language Ambassadors Last term, the Modern Foreign Languages department hosted a Language Ambassador meeting in order to discuss the role and share ideas. Wearing their badges and a big smile, students who volunteered to give up their time to help the MFL Department showed their commitment by discussing all the ways that we can promote languages at Warlingham School & Sixth Form College. Last term, our new Language Ambassador team met for the first time. We spent this first session over lunch co-ordinating ourselves to prepare for a year of organising various events and activities. Most of the things we have done so far have been small, as we have had various exam weeks, but we have events, lessons, and many more exciting things to come this year. Aaron Patten 11N

European Languages Day On 26th September, we held European Languages Day. We celebrated it by doing a quiz during form time. The quiz had lots of questions on translation and trivia and it was a really great experience to bond with classmates and join in on an enjoyable whole school competition. Personally, I found the quiz really fun, interesting and a great form activity and I hope we do something similar in the future. European Languages Day is a time to celebrate the many different cultures and their languages from all across Europe. The winners of the quiz were 8G and 8L and they won prizes of sweets and stationery which I'm sure they were very happy about. Some of the language ambassadors (myself included) handed out the prizes along with Miss Duvigneau. It felt great distributing the prizes and was very fulfilling. Matilda Kent 9R

Page 12

...Modern Languages Customs and Traditions All our students learnt about how Christmas is celebrated in France and Spain. Sarah Zahid, our Language Ambassador in 11L – wrote a beautiful article about “La galette des rois” which is a cake eaten on 6th January in France to celebrate Epiphany. Mrs Smales baked a cake for Year 12 and Year 13. Emily Hunn in 13Fr was the winner of “la fève” which is a small charm hidden inside the cake. And as such was wearing the crown! Star Students’ Breakfast Students who achieved the most MFL Star Awards during the Autumn Term were invited for breakfast. Year 10 & 11 enjoyed breakfast on 17th December, Year 7 on 10th January and Years 8 & 9 on 11th January. We were delighted to be able to praise and reward them with croissant and pain au chocolat, or as Mrs Smales would call them, “chocolatine” (name given in the South-West of France for a pain au chocolat)!

. Joanna Duvigneau, Subject Lead: French

Meet the Team We are delighted to introduce the Modern Foreign Languages Team and tell you more about ourselves. Brigitte Smales, Head of Modern Foreign Languages I was born in Algeria and later raised in France. I grew up surrounded by different languages: French, Arabic and Spanish. I suppose this is where my love of languages started. My languages helped me find work in the banking industry first. After a career break to spend time with my children, I decided to study again and 12 years ago completed my PGCE placement at Warlingham. And a few years later… here I am, a very proud Head of our MFL Department!

Bonjour! My name is Miss Duvigneau and this is my fourth year at Warlingham. I have always loved learning languages ever since I was in Year 7. I started learning French when I was 11, I started learning Spanish and Russian when I was 12 and I started learning Italian when I was 17. I went to the University of Exeter to study French and Russian. I split my year abroad between the two countries. I was very nervous about leaving my family, but when I got out there it was an incredible adventure like no other! Megan Johnson, Modern Foreign Languages Teacher I studied French and Spanish GCSE and A level here at Warlingham as a student! I then continued to study both languages at the University of

Page 14

...Modern Languages Reading and, as a part of my degree, I did a year abroad in France and Argentina. This was an incredible experience and I had the most amazing time - particularly travelling the whole of Argentina and neighbouring South American countries. I then decided that I wanted to share my passion for languages and did my PCGE with the University of Roehampton and where else better to spend my first few years teaching than here at Warlingham! Ernesto Gomez-Alzate, Modern Foreign Languages Teacher

¡Hola! I’m a Spanish and French teacher here at Warlingham. I am from Colombia and, as Jeremy Clarkson once said, my country is one of the most amazing on Earth! Colombia has diverse regions - from the Caribbean with cities like the Pirates of the Caribbean, to the Andes and you can end in the Amazon jungle. We are very happy people and we like Salsa dancing, as well as listening to tropical music. I love talking not only about languages but also about cultures and the way people think about countries. Celine Foret, Modern Foreign Languages Teacher

Page 15

I am a native French speaker and have been teaching for many years now. I have been teaching French at Warlingham for the last five years but I can also teach German. I come from the north-east of France and my region is best known for its Champagne! I am also a strong advocate for Mental Health. Estibaliz GutiérrezMontes, Modern Foreign Languages Teacher

¡Hola! I was born and raised in the beautiful south of Spain. I studied English Language and Literature at University, as well as Tourism Management as languages and travelling are my two passions. I grew up in the Andalusian Province of Córdoba, which was once the Capital City and main Pilgrimage route of the Islamic Religion in the

. whole of Europe. Now my home city is known as 'La ciudad de las tres culturas', which translates to 'The city of three Cultures' as for thousands of years Christians, Muslims and Jews have lived side by side. Growing up surrounded by so much diversity, it's no surprise that I love traveling and learning about other cultures around the world! I wanted to become a teacher to share this passion and love with others. Before settling in in the UK, I lived in several other countries, among those, Poland is one of my favourite! Maria Fernandez, Language Assistant

¡Hola! I’m the Spanish Language Assistant for the 2021-2022 academic year at Warlingham. I’m from Barcelona, Spain, and I studied my degree in Spanish Language and Literature and my masters’ in Spanish as a Foreign Language there. I’ve always dreamed about living in England to improve my English

and visit as many places as possible because it’s a gorgeous place!

Melanie Eustace, Department Assistant I help out in the Modern Foreign Languages Department (amongst others) with a wide variety of tasks. I enjoy being in the MFL Office as I studied French and Spanish at A level and, although it was some time ago, I’m always amazed at how much of each language I can still understand. I travelled widely in my teens and early twenties, spending many years backpacking and working in Europe, Australia, America and Mexico and fully embraced the pleasure of speaking the native language of some of these amazing places.

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge Before the Christmas break, some of our Year 12 and Year 13 A level Maths students sat the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The challenge embodies many of the Warlingham Learner Attributes of Courage, Commitment and Kindness, in particular ‘We are up for a challenge’, ‘We keep going even when things are hard’ and ‘We plan and anticipate’. A huge well done to all those that took part but special congratulations to Tommi Kelha who received a Silver certificate. Also well done to Matthew Woodgate from Year 13 and Leonard Amoabeng, Jessica Dann, Patryk Nowak and Isabel Rider from Year 12 who all received Bronze certificates.

Example Question Alison has a set of ten fridge magnets showing the integers from 0 to 9 inclusive. In how many different ways can she split the set into five pairs so that the sum of each pair is a multiple of 5? A1

B2

C3

D4

E5

Are you up for a challenge? Have a go at one of the questions they had to answer!

Page 18

Solution The answer is D! The numbers 0 and 5 must be paired with one another (one choice).

Work Experience - can you help?

The number 1 must be paired with either 4 or 9 (two choices).

We are working towards ensuring all our Year 10 students secure a Work Experience placement for two weeks from 4th to 15th July.

The number 6 must be paired with whichever of 4 or 9 is not paired with 1 (one choice).

We are also looking for all Year 12 students to complete a week of work shadowing from 11th to 15th July.

Similarly, the number 2 must be paired with either 3 or 8 (two choices). Lastly, the number 7 must be paired with whichever of 3 or 8 is not paired with 2 (one choice). The number of possible combinations is then the product of the number of choices which is 1×2×1×2×1=4

Page 19

If you can offer a placement at your place of employment for either year group, we would love to hear from you. Please send an email to me at warlinghamwex@warlinghamtlt.co.uk and let me know what year group you could support and what your company / job role is. Thank you in advance for your support! I look forward to hearing from you.

Year 11 Thakeham Homes insight trip On Thursday 13th January, I was very privileged to be able to take a group of twelve Year 11 students to the Woodgate Development in Pease Pottage that is currently under construction by Thakeham Homes. This was following on from a Virtual Work Experience Day that these students undertook in October. We were given our own PPE, high viz jackets and hard hats and taken on a full tour of the site. Students were introduced to all aspects of the construction process, the different types of homes being built, planning permissions and criteria, as well as hearing all about the various roles on the site. This included roles of the

Managing Director, the Social Responsibility Manager, Site Managers, vehicle drivers and all the various trades. Once we had braved the mud round the site, we were able to look in one of the show homes and hear about the marketing side of the development. The members of Thakeham Homes that showed us round were so generous with their time and their expertise, encouraging and answering all questions and making the whole experience valuable and relatable. We asked the students what impact the day had on their future career plans and you will see some of the responses on these pages. My thanks go to Sarah Crush and Danny Tugwell

from Thakeham Homes for making us so welcome and to Mrs Smith for being our minibus driver and joining me on the trip.

I got to speak to the Site Manager about the different job opportunities and now know what to explore. Darshan Thoroughgood

It made me love and be more interested in becoming a Site Manager. Kaydee Alford-Emery

It has helped me to see the way into the career I want to do (Quantity Surveyor). Harvey Dyer

We are delighted to take the opportunity in this edition of the newsletter to introduce the Johnson Student team. These Year 10 students use their time and ideas to provide support for others in the House, and to ensure that students in the House have the best opportunities. They have been interviewed about their roles and this is what they had to say: Anastashia Smith – Head Girl, 10A

Gabriel Berry – Head Boy, 10A

I have always looked up to the Head Girls in Johnson House since I have been a student in Year 7. I want to be a great role model for younger students and help support them to enjoy their time at Warlingham as I have done.

I wanted to take on the role to experience new things and learn new skills. I also wanted to make sure that Johnson is great for all students. I am looking forward to organising a variety of events for students.

Abigail Collis – Deputy Head Girl, 10W I enjoy helping other people achieve their goals and boosting their confidence, so being a part of the student team is great for that. I take part in and support a variety of clubs in school, including the orchestra. My biggest aim is to further the sense of community within the House.

Page 22

Will Gray – Deputy Head Boy, 10W I wanted to be part of the House team as I am competitive and want the house to win house competitions and earn lots of merits. I enjoy History and believe that I can bring a different perspective to help solve problems.

Lily Dain – Charity Coordinator, 10W I wanted to be part of the house team to help raise awareness for those people with special educational needs, including autism. I am a huge advocate for disability awareness and acceptance and want to be part of promoting this within Johnson House. You can often find me doing drama – my favourite activity!

Both myself and Mrs Hunt have been incredibly impressed with the effort and commitment they have shown already and are excited to continue working with them for the rest of this academic year!

Since September, we have asked tutors to nominate their tutee of the fortnight. This could be for going above and beyond in registration time, being recognised for their efforts in lessons and around school, or showing one of our school’s attributes; courage, commitment, and kindness. We have had some brilliant nominations so far and look forward to congratulating many more students this term. Every time a student is nominated, they will be entered into a raffle to win a prize at the end of each half term. See last term’s nominations below: Year 7

Votes for Schools As part of our registration activities, students have the opportunity to learn about and debate topics each week, using resources from VotesforSchools. This helps provide students with a wider understanding of current affairs, develops their empathy and kindness skills when considering sensitive issues, and also enables them to practise forming arguments and debating. Furthermore, they have their voices heard as VotesforSchools shares the voting outcomes with a variety of organisations, including governments and charities.

Recently, students have discussed the topics below. Their votes as a school can be seen below alongside the votes for Surrey and the UK.

Is January the best time for resolutions?

Is spending on space worthwhile?

PE round up The Spring term has started with a busy sporting fixtures schedule with rugby and football teams in action to kick start the year. The Year 11 Football Team travelled down to Riddlesdown School to play in the first round of the Surrey Cup. This was the first game together as a Year 11 cohort. Warlingham started well by applying high pressure on the opposition which led to an early goal by Freddie Vernon, assisted by Matthew Feeney-Hill.

The game was highly competitive which eventually finished 1-1 after 70 minutes. The action wasn't complete as Warlingham went on to win 26-25 on penalties! The team showed great resilience and determination to bring home such a fantastic result. Warlingham will be playing St Joseph's College in the next round.

Preparing Year 12 & 13 for next steps At Warlingham Sixth Form College, this half term will see a real focus on preparing students for their next steps. In Year 12, students are excited to start researching possible Work Experience placements which will be taking place in the Summer Term. Already, one of our students will be volunteering at the Biggin Hill Hanger which they are very much looking forward to.

opportunities. We wish all our students the best of luck in researching their next steps and are looking forward to supporting them in making their next exciting move after Warlingham Sixth Form College.

The Year 12 students have also been introduced to programmes run by Sutton Trust, including a Summer School for both Universities and Apprenticeships. These enable students to get an experience of what life will be like in pursuing such opportunities in the future. If students are interested in applying, then please speak to a member of the Sixth Form team. Whilst students in Year 12 are starting to research their next steps, the current Year 13s are approaching the deadline for their UCAS applications. Many of our students have already received offers from universities including a student who is hoping to study History at Chichester University. Likewise, Year 13 students interested in applying for apprenticeships are also receiving support from Miss Scanlon during registration periods on a Thursday on how to search and apply for apprenticeship
