I hope that you and your loved ones were able to enjoy the Easter break and that the easing of some of the lockdown measures afforded you the opportunity to reconnect with friends and family, even if only outside. It seems like a long time since the break as we have had such a busy return to school. Year 11 and Year 13 students have completed the first of two assessment windows to support the awarding of their grades this year. They have clearly prepared thoroughly and have conducted themselves superbly throughout this first assessment period and have already been immersed in preparations for the second and final assessment window that begins on 10th May. The rest of the student body have returned to school well after the break and we appreciate the support of parents in re-establishing good routines and full school uniform for students in Years 7 to 10. We have been fortunate so far to be able to fully open the school and the twice weekly asymptomatic selftesting has supported this having minimal
interference from Covid-19 cases so far. As a parent of two secondary school children and also married to a teacher, I fully appreciate the organisation and persistence required to ensure these tests are completed and logged on the NHS system twice a week and I wanted to express my gratitude to parents and carers for supporting this process that is enabling the school to remain open for all students. While it is not a time for complacency, the contents of this newsletter highlight the extent to which the slow easing of lockdown restrictions is enabling the school to come back to more normal activities and the revival of the extra-curricular life of the school. Whether it is the chance to start the day with a fresh breakfast, engage in interhouse sports competitions or sign up for a future trip, a number of opportunities that students and the school have missed are becoming more and more possible. It was great to see the students enjoying healthy Inter-house competition in football and netball at the end of last term and congratulations to those securing success

for their House. Our school ethos of ‘wide horizons, high aspirations’ can be seen in the leadership and personal development opportunities outlined in this newsletter for Year 11 and 12 students. I am particularly pleased and proud that we are one of only two schools in the country to offer the benefits of the National Citizen Service to our students at no cost to the students themselves and look forward to seeing the students take some much-needed time to focus on their broader development after such a heavy focus on preparing for their assessments. I am also really excited to see the positive example and difference that our Year 12 students will set as role models and leaders of our student community in the future as students from different year groups are able to interact much more in the future. It is my sincere hope that during the course of this term we will set the foundations, both academically and socially, for a really successful return to normal

Year 11 National Citizen Service In partnership with National Citizen Service (NCS), Warlingham School & Sixth Form College is offering a two-week bespoke programme of activities to all Year 11 students, commencing on 7th June 2021. This is an exciting opportunity to enable our young people to embark on new challenges, develop their resilience, employability skills and contribute towards their local community. The programme usually costs over £1,200 per student, but we have managed to secure funding to offer it completely free to all Year 11 students. We are only one of two schools in the country to fully fund the NCS programme.
Phase 1: Team building - external activity centre (2 days) Phase 2: Wellbeing, employability skills and careers workshops (3 Days) Phase 3: Community-based social action project (5 days)
Year 11 met the NCS team leaders this week and sign-up forms need to be handed to Tutors by Friday 7th May.

10x1A English Reading 10X1A have started studying Jekyll and Hyde in English this term and have started to explore some interesting themes such as the duality of human nature and gothic atmospheres. In order to get students to engage with these themes and the Victorian context, students have selected a book to complement their studies. We are having a 'Book Club' once a fortnight to discuss the complex ideas in the novels selected and sharing ideas that can be applied to Jekyll and Hyde. I am very proud of all the students in my class for their participation and engagement in this reading challenge.

It was a fantastic evening with high engagement throughout. Well done to those students that stepped up to represent their house. It was nice to see all students enjoying themselves in the highly competitive games across the evening. Year 9 Monday 29th March was the turn for Year 9. Year 7 & 8 Inter-form Football Year 8 The 30th March saw the return of Year 8 Inter-form football. It was a very busy evening with all forms submitting a team. Despite the increasing temperatures, all students worked incredibly hard with a huge amount of talent on show across the evening. The determination from all students was clear to see and they should be tremulously proud of their efforts. Well done to all forms across the evening!
Year 7 Wednesday 31st March was the day for enthusiastic Year 7’s to get stuck into Inter-form Football. Once again, it was another busy evening with representatives from every tutor group. Year 11 Inter-house Netball On Tuesday 23rd March, we saw the return of Interhouse Netball to Year 11 and on Wednesday 24th March the return of Year 10. Although we were lower on numbers than we had hoped for, it was wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm from both year groups. Year 11
The Spring sunshine and warmer weather made both evenings a real pleasure and it was pleasing to see that, although a little rusty in places, the natural talent of our students was there to see. By the end of the competition, the skill level had noticeably increased. However, it was the positive spirit and sense of fun in which the competition was played that gave such a lift to everyone.

Second and third places were settled on goal differences. What a vibrant group of young people, despite all the challenges that have been faced and that young people are facing are out playing again and enjoying sport. Well done Year 11!
In terms of community involvement, the PE department had the added support of Ms Crowhurst to help the event run smoothly. Thank you so much!

Year 9
Those who played really showed determination and worked hard to represent their house and should feel really proud of their efforts. Special mention should go to 10N who were short on players but stayed to support the competition and played nonetheless. Miss Raymond also gave them a helping hand! Mallory were also glad of the help and involvement of Alex Tsangari. Yet again we had the help of Ms Crowhurst and Mrs Smith to add to the smooth running of the competition.
On Monday 29th March, it was the turn of Year 9. It was a competitive Inter-house where many of the girls showed real flair and determination. The spring sunshine was a real boost to the competition. The skill level increased throughout the afternoon and there were many goal scoring opportunities.

Last but not least, on Wednesday the 31st of March was the turn of Year 7. We had representatives from every tutor group. Although we were not as lucky with the weather, it was good to see the courts full of energy and talented players. Very well done to everyone from all Year groups who entered!

Exciting Event for Year 12 Next month, we are very pleased to be able to partner with Thakeham Homes to deliver the Open Doors event to all Year 12 students. Thakeham Homes is a construction company based in Billingshurst but with local sites across the Coast to Capital area (our Careers Hub area). This talk will be conducted via TEAMs and we will be hearing from an apprentice and a recent graduate. It will not be sector specific, but rather it will be about their experience of transitioning into the world of work. Each speaker will talk to the students for about 1520 minutes followed by a Q&A session.
This event will hopefully give the students an insight into life after Sixth Form, regardless of the path they are planning on or the sector they are aiming for. This event will meet Gatsby Benchmark 5, encounters with employers and employees, where students gain an interactive experience and one where they can learn about the world of work and the skills needed to transition from education to work.
Topics to be covered: ✓
What pathway they took (apprenticeship or full time uni) and why
✓
What the job search process was like and the advice they’d give others
✓
What the selection process was like for the company they are now with
✓
How they find the world of work – what skills have they needed that’s surprised them.

Year 12 Events and Opportunities for the Summer Term This week in Year 12 Assembly, Mr Leay went through a number of events and opportunities available to our Year 12 College students this term. Students were asked to consider the inspirational and exceptional achievements of Mollie Hughes, at the young age of 21, and to set themselves some manageable and achievable personal goals but also to aim high – the theme of our next steps/ destinations work with them this term. In the term ahead, our Year 12 students will be using morning tutor time to work with their tutors to start building their personal statements and CV’s and to record their achievements using an online platform called Unifrog. Here they will also be able to start researching university and apprenticeship opportunities and compiling shortlists of options available to them. The software automatically links their shortlists up with their tutors to help generate useful next steps discussions. All the research completed in the next
few weeks will lead towards our AIM HIGH week (week commencing 5th July). Our Aim High week will be based in school on Monday and Tuesday 5th/6th July, followed by a two day opportunity to get some work experience and/or work on careers/employability skills development online resources at home, culminating in a Year 12 trip to Thorpe Park on the Friday (TBC - Covid-19 and costs permitting!). More details to follow.

Year 12 Student Leadership This week, Mr Scott also launched several Leadership opportunities that Year 12 students can apply for. The assembly presentation explored the leadership styles and qualities of three great leaders, including Nelson Mandela. The students were asked to consider whether or not they had the skills and attributes to be a potential Student Leader. The skills and attributes required for the Leadership positions were also discussed in relation to those we are striving to develop in all of our Warlingham Learners. Finally, Mr Scott reminded all of our Year 12 students about the importance of
Page 17
Leadership in terms of accreditation for the Warlingham Advance Award. All of the positions offered allow students to claim Personal Development credits (5 or 10) as part of their contribution to Community engagement. All the Leadership posts also allow students to develop and achieve most if not all of the Award’s employability skills, in particular the Leadership skill.
