Warlingham News - Summer 2021 - Issue 16

It has been an exceptionally busy half term for our school community. Every student in every subject in Years 11 and 13 has had two separate assessment windows in which to demonstrate their learning and progress in support of the school awarding centre assessed grades for their GCSE, A Level and vocational qualifications. The past two years of study for both year groups have been extremely challenging and disrupted, however, I want to reiterate to parents the extent to which the students have conscientiously and maturely handled themselves throughout. Their conduct and application during this half term have been superb and I know much of this is as a result of the excellent support they have had from parents and carers, alongside their teachers and support staff at the school. Today, we had the opportunity to recognise this with the students in celebratory events for both Year 11 and 13. We look forward to welcoming a number of Year 11 students back after half term for the National Citizens Service programme. We have also prepared a range of resources and materials for all students in

Year 11 and 13 to support them maintaining their learning and preparing for their next step, whether it be joining the Sixth Form College, moving on to college elsewhere, university, employment or apprenticeships. Please do look at the Bridging the Gap programme for Year 11, and Next Steps for Year 13, with your child to support them to make the most of these tools for their progression. Although there has been self-testing twice a week and enhanced wearing of face coverings, we have had a six week period in which there has been minimal disruption to learning for the vast majority of students, as a result of Covid-19. I sincerely hope that we can sustain this in the next half term and hit the national milestones required to further ease Covid-19 restrictions on the way we must operate in school, and in our lives beyond school. It has been great to see the extra-curricular activities restart during this half term and we are excited about the prospect of this continuing to expand over the final half term of the school year, should the national progress against the pandemic allow.

It is fantastic to see our Year 12 Student Leaders appointed since our last newsletter, and I look forward to them being able to act as role models and work with younger students in the school. One of the biggest losses of the pandemic period has been the restrictions that it has placed on mentoring and guidance for younger students from their older peers, and the cross-year group extra-curricular opportunities that enable students to widen their horizons and raise their aspirations. It will be great to see this aspect of school life return and its impact in the months and year ahead. Finally, please don’t forget that we will have an afternoon of remote learning on Monday 7th June to facilitate the moderation and standardisation process for Year 11 and 13 assessments from 2pm. I hope you and your loved ones are able to enjoy a relaxing half term break and look forward to an exciting final half term of this school year.

Home Learning After-School Club for Years 7 & 8 Home Learning Club is back! In order to support Year 7 and 8 students with their home learning, we will operate a Home Learning Club, which runs from Monday to Wednesday between 3.10pm - 4.10pm and on Thursday between 2.10pm -3.10pm. Unfortunately, there will be no club running on a Friday and, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we cannot house the older but more independent year groups at this stage.

Home Learning Club Hours Monday - Wednesday 3.10 -4.10pm Thursday 2.10 -3.10pm

The Home Learning Club is overseen by a mixture of staff to support the students, who will have access to computers. Year 7 should enter by the LRC main internal door, where they will find the Homework Club situated in the computer suite side of the LRC. Year 8 will enter from the external LRC door and will be situated by the window bordered side of the LRC with access to laptops. Please encourage students to attend should you feel that they would benefit from completing independent home learning work with in-school support, or if they would benefit from access to computers or a dedicated study space. We look forward to welcoming students to Home Learning Club after Half Term.

On Wednesday 16th June, all Year 10 students will be given the opportunity to visit the Careers and Enterprise Company Virtual Careers Fair. They will be assigned a two-hour slot and provided access to computers in order to explore the fair. This will be an opportunity for pupils to visit virtual employers’ booths, loaded with information, videos and presentations which they can access on demand or save for future reference. They will have the chance to talk live to employer and college/university exhibitors via a group chat facility, ask questions and receive real time answers. There will also be a number of pre-recorded webinars to view in the Auditorium. As a school, we are proud to be a part of the Coast to Capital Careers Hub, which provides us with priority access to these types of fully funded events.

Page 5

Your son/daughter does not have to do anything in advance of the event and they will be provided with all instructions on the day by staff supporting them. I am very excited to be able to organise this event and hope that the students find it both interesting and useful. I will be in touch with you again nearer the time with more specific details on times and places. If you have any further questions, please email me.

Warlingham Sixth Form College Appoints New Student Leaders For the past couple of weeks, Warlingham Sixth Form College’s most eager Year 12 students have competed for their place on the Leadership Team of the college committee. Each student was interviewed and stated their interest in either: Head Boy or Head Girl, President of the Student Union, or Prefect. All students received an email with the requirements and expectations that each position deemed necessary. They were given around a week’s notice to make their preparations for the interviews on the 11th of May and to fill in a set of questions regarding their specific committee interest. After much deliberation between the College staff, on the 12th of May the results were finalised and announced. With Josh Scott as Head Boy and Harry Liu as his Deputy, Jasmine Rodrigues as Head Girl and Maisie Connery as her Deputy. The role of President was appointed to Thida Ouch and Rowena Dewar, and Ben Colbourne as Vice President. All the elected students demonstrated a great interest in being part of the Warlingham Sixth Form College Student Leadership Team. As Head Boy and Head Girl, you are expected to be a good listener and team member, able to give advice and solve problems, prepared to issue an instruction and to follow up issues, and finally to demonstrate strong leadership qualities.

Our Head Girl, Jasmine Rodrigues, stated that she wishes to be a “representative” and act as a “democratic voice” of all Warlingham Students and ensure that our ideas and opinions have a strong impact on the running of our school. She quoted “once my term of office begins, I will have three main drives – increased focus on pupils’ mental health, learning life skills, and broadening our discussion of key social issues.”

Page 12

She hopes to fulfil the role of Head Girl to the best of her ability and looks forward to working alongside all years at Warlingham – “from Year 7 all the way through to our Sixth Form” in which she wants to unite us in a “novel way”. In regard to this she holds the strong belief that the most effective way of the development of a school is to actively involve the students and engage them with decision making. To finish, Jasmine addressed her gratitude for the opportunity and how excited she is to plan and implement herself into Head Girl life.

Now Josh has been appointed the role of Head Boy, he is thinking about how he is going to try to implement his ideas on College and school life. He quotes, “as a team we need to try our best to make every pupil’s experience at Warlingham School the best it can be.” Although Josh is a very charismatic individual, he wishes to work on his public speaking, and believes his role as Head Boy will enable him to unlock his potential. Josh can’t wait to work with his fellow student leaders and work towards a more positive and diligent way of school life.
