Since our last newsletter, a lot has happened in the school, our local community and nationally. So much so that I am reminded of the quote from Weldon that “nothing happens, and nothing happens, and then everything happens.”

Citizenship Service programme. I was privileged to see some of their group presentations about their experiences and learning. It is clear that they covered a huge range of life skills: cooking a meal, communication skills and public speaking, team building and body language awareness, as well Since my last message, we have been busily as developing and realising a social engaged in the moderation, enterprise project. While their standardisation and quality assurance learning will not be captured Nothing happens, and process for grading of students in in any examination or nothing happens, and then Year 11 and 13. opportunity to think about the future and set their aspirations for life after their schooling. The decision of the government to delay the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions and the current rises in infection rates are a stark reminder that the disruption to our lives presented by the pandemic are far from behind us.

sexual harassment and sexual violence, including online, in their lives and the lives of their peers. The review included visits to 32 schools and colleges and conversations with over 900 children and young people.

Thank you for your continued support at home with ensuring that students are self-testing twice a week, as are the staff, in order to enable us to continue to have all students in school and learning, as well as keep our school and wider community safe. Students have been excellent at wearing face coverings while unable to social distance in corridors and other indoor areas in school. Please can I remind students, parents and carers to ensure mask wearing in local shops on the way to and from school, as well as on public transport.

Together with other school leaders, I am committed to ensuring that our young people do not experience and have to accept any form sexual harassment. The report findings indicate that for some of the students interviewed this had become normalised to the extent that they did not report it to the school or their parent or carers. This is something that as a school, and as parents and carers, we are committed to working together to tackle because sexual harassment will not be tolerated or accepted at Warlingham School & Sixth Form College.

Last week, Ofsted published a report on their review into abuse in schools and colleges, following a review into the prevalence of peer-on-peer

We all have a part to play in ensuring the students understand the need to report inappropriate and unsafe behaviours. Through our Relationships, Sex

and Health Education (RHSE) programme we will continue to inform students on themes such as healthy relationships, consent and sexting. We will also continue to work with other local multi agency safeguarding partners to respond appropriately to any incidents. Finally, watching the Denmark and Belgium football game last night, when in the tenth minute the players and fans on both sides showed their support for Christian Eriksen, I was struck by the power of community in rallying together even in the most competitive of circumstances. I look forward to the opportunities in the future that will enable our school community to come together in ways that have not been possible this year due to the pandemic.

Reminder Friday 25th June is an INSET Day

Fundraising for SameYou Charity Supporting Brain Injury During our Tutor and PE sessions this week, we launched a new fundraising initiative to raise money for SameYou, a charity for brain injury recovery founded by actress Emilia Clarke. Emilia survived two life threatening brain haemorrhages while working on Game of Thrones and decided to share her story and start SameYou to increase awareness that 1 in 3 people will be affected by brain injury, known as ABI.

Anyone who makes a donation will automatically be entered into a prize draw, which will be drawn on the last week of term. Three lucky winners, selected at random, will be awarded a £10 voucher for one of these chosen outlets: Apple Music, Prettylittlething, Sport Direct or Nandos. Thank you in advance for supporting this worthwhile cause.

We will be promoting this fundraising opportunity during our timetabled PE and Gym lessons for all year groups across this half term with a range of exciting athletics events. Students will be competing in small groups in a variety of fun athletics track and field events, including a tug of war. We encourage students to make a donation to SameYou charity by scanning the posters outside E2, HOH Corridor or outside B2 which takes them to our fundraising campaign page on JustGiving. Students, parents, carers and friends can also donate by clicking here..

About ABI and SameYou When your brain is injured, it is called an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). ABI is primarily made up of stroke, brain tumour and traumatic brain injury – where sudden trauma to the brain is caused by external force such as a fall, sports concussion or road traffic accident. The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies rehabilitation as a substantial and ever-increasing unmet global need – but it’s not an integrated part of health services. Most leading neuroscientists agree we haven’t discovered the most effective therapies for the long-term physical, mental and behavioural problems that make brain injury recovery so difficult. SameYou represents the needs of people recovering from brain injury and stroke to help provide better holistic rehabilitation care. Click here for further information about SameYou or visit www.sameyou.org.

On the 19th May during Enrichment hour, Year 12 attended the Open Doors event run virtually by The Careers and Enterprise Company. We were able to join up with one of the Career Hubs Cornerstone Employers, Thakeham Homes, and invited Katie (Graduate Planner) and Harvey (Trainee Surveyor) to speak to our students about their education and their pathway after education. Katie followed the traditional university route and Harvey followed the apprenticeship route. During the event, our guest speakers discussed their job search and recruitment process involved with finding their first job. They then went on to talk about the world of work and the skills needed for their job, as well as the hardest thing about transitioning from education to work. Finally, they offered the one piece of advice they would give to our Year 12 students to help them navigate into the world of work one day. Our students were then able to ask questions and find out more about what Katie and Harvey had said.

I am so pleased that we have been able to arrange the same opportunity for our Year 10 cohort with Lizzie, who joined the Surrey Wildlife Trust as an intern and is now the Education and Engagement Officer. This will be taking place during their Inspire session, Period 2 on Monday 21st June via TEAMs in their form rooms.

Year 13 Leavers Day On a beautiful sunny day during the afternoon of Friday 28th May, Warlingham Sixth Form College said farewell to Year 13 students during their Leavers’ Ceremony. It was a sad occasion but a fantastic day to celebrate the achievements of all students and to use our lovely garden space in the Sixth Form centre where the Team enjoyed using the new BBQ and the students enjoyed a burger or two! The ceremony was a fitting occasion to recognise that our current Year 13 Leavers have experienced more challenges than most previous Year 13 groups due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years and the interruption this has led to in their learning. Despite these challenges, all students have demonstrated remarkable resilience in completing their periods of lockdown learning and during their recent end of year assessments. To recognise these achievements, subject awards were given to students with many picking up prizes. The Student Leadership Team also received awards for their dedication and commitment to the Sixth Form College over the past year.

Our outgoing joint Student Union President, Grace Day said the following about the Leavers’ Ceremony:

It was really nice to be around everyone when we had no more exam stress and to speak to our teachers who have helped us so much throughout our years here and the pandemic. It was quite emotional for me because I’ve been here for 7 years like many other people and it was just strange that it was all over, but a great day of celebrating achievements and enjoying everyone’s company. Grace Day

As Grace said, it was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of a fantastic year group and to give their teachers the chance to bid them farewell. We wish every student the very best of luck in their future next steps and we are confident they will be moving on to great things.

To all our leavers, please stay in touch and keep us updated on your future next steps!
