ucky Boy xx
by Christopher Hector
This article is reprinted with kind permission of the author, Christopher Hector, The Horse Magazine, www.HorseMagazine.com The Thoroughbred stallion Lucky Boy was responsible for the first of the Dutch modern jumpers to set the world alight. Melanie Smith’s Calypso finished second in the 1980 World Cup final and then followed that up two years later with a victory in the 1982 final in Göteborg. Jacob Melissen comments in his 1992/’93 edition of The Leading Sires of the Netherlands that: “Calypso has been of fundamental importance to the development of showjumping in the ‘new style.’ He was one of those elastic, plucky horses that perform intelligently and are keen to tackle anything without being too hot. Bold horses, with a light-footed canter. The kind of horses in which the athletic action of the Thoroughbred is united with the balanced character of the part-bred. That’s what Calypso was, and that’s precisely what Lucky Boy contributed to Dutch sport horse breeding.” In fact, Lucky Boy contributed a string of top jumpers to the international scene. There was Willi Melliger’s Van Gogh, and The Freak with Hugo Simon and later Dirk Hafemeister, and Anne Kursinski’s Medrano—and all three of them were in Los Angeles for the 1984 Olympic Games. In fact, the Lucky Boys seemed to come in threes, because three years later, the winning American team in the Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows found room for three Lucky Boy offspring: VIP and Debbie Dolan, Victor and Joan Scharffenberger, and Anne Kursinski and Medrano.

(Annemarie Kynsilehto) and Bokilly (Eugenie Legrand, now Eugenie Angot). Lucky Boy’s sire, Compromise, is rich in the blood that says “jump” on any Thoroughbred pedigree: Phalaris (three times) and Bayardo (twice).
Above: Anne Kursinski and Medrano. Left: The Freak and Hugo Simon. Lucky Boy’s most famous son Octrooi (ridden here by Hap Hansen), known in the US as Best of Luck. He had a successful competition career in Europe before being brought to the US by John and Tish Quirk, where his successes continued with Hunter Championships. His legacy includes approved sons on both sides of the Atlantic and continuing generations of champions. (See Tish Quirk below.)
Lucky Boy produced sixteen stallion sons, the most famous of which was Octrooi, who had a successful career in the USA under the name Best of Luck. [see Tish Quirk, below.] Interestingly, he was out of a mare by yet another Thoroughbred sire, Koridon. Best of Luck competed in Europe as a Grand Prix jumper, where he was a champion, and in North America, where he was a Champion Hunter. A horse of elegance and impressive appearance, Best Of Luck sired winners in all Hunter and Jumper divisions from Junior / Amateur to Open, Puissance and International Grand Prix, as well as FEI dressage and Combined Training champions. Lucky Boy is also proving a valuable broodmare sire. Beezie Madden’s star Authentic is by Guidam but out of a grand-daughter of Lucky Boy. Rolf-Goran Bengtssen’s Mac Kinley is out of a great
grand-daughter of Lucky Boy. Katharina Offel’s Nike is by Indoctro out of a daughter of Octrooi (Best of Luck).
Authentic, KWPN grandson of Zinda, a daughter of Lucky Boy. Authentic won three Olympic medals and two World Equestrian Games medals with Beezie Madden.
Tish Quirk and the Blood of Lucky Boy xx in the US by Anna Goebel with Tish Quirk
Best Of Luck was the most important son of Lucky Boy xx (see main article), and had proven himself in Europe in showjumping competition and as a sire, when he was purchased by Tish and John Quirk of California. John and Tish had bought and sold many horses before then, but Best Of Luck was different. Tish describes how he changed their lives forever. “In 1983 our good friend and horse supplier, Jan Maathuis, called to say that there was a very special Dutch horse in Germany that he thought we should buy. He said, ‘This is not a sale horse. This horse is for you.’ So, it was agreed that Jan would buy the horse for us in Germany and he would return to Holland as our horse.” As it happened, John went on the next trip to Holland alone. International phone calls were expensive, but John called twice a day every day he was there. “The conversation was the same each
time. He said ‘You are not going to believe what I just bought for you....’ John had bought Octrooi, the 10-year-old son of Lucky Boy. I was more than a little worried that I would not be able to live up to the perfection of this horse! “The horses landed at Los Angeles and were vanned to the little farm we leased. It was dark when they arrived and the driver and I started unloading horses. The last horse off the van was Octrooi. I was in love before I got into the barn with him. He was calm and brave and kind and beautiful. “He had been a successful Grand Prix jumper in Europe but he was so beautiful and moved and jumped in such great style that we knew he would be a fabulous Hunter. Octrooi was 3/4 Thoroughbred with just enough great warmblood influence to be

more calm and powerful; he kept his Thoroughbred elegance and grace. In order to honor his incredible sire, Lucky Boy, we named him Best of Luck. He was the best of everything and changed the direction of my life with horses.” Tish started showing Best Of Luck to great success, and offers came in to buy him—some substantial. Tish didn’t want to part with him, so she decided that the next-best thing for those who wanted Best Of Luck would be a foal by Best Of Luck. And so her new breeding business was born. Best Of Luck had hundreds of foals in Europe. “Best Of Luck was one of only two stallions in North America to score over 100 points in both Dressage and Jumping on the Dutch Stallion Index, which is based on the success of the offspring sired by the stallion and reflects the ability of the stallion to improve the breed. “Among the Best Of Luck offspring imported from Europe were Octrooi II (Lynn Little), who was placing in East Coast Grands Prix before his untimely death from colic; and Surprise, imported as a 3-year-old to be trained by a 13-year-old. They earned championships as a Junior Hunter and Junior Jumper and Junior/Amateur Grand Prix, and went on to win in Open classes. In 1990 they placed in every Grand Prix they entered and topped an impressive field to win the $50,000 Hermes Los Angeles International Grand Prix, which was a World Cup Qualifier.
Champion at Capitol Challenge and other prestigious shows. ” Tish’s own breeding program produced two stallions to carry the blood of Lucky Boy into the next generation. “The night Just The Best was born I knew he was the successor to Best of Luck. His conformation, quality and presence were immediately evident. He is out of Timely Persuasion, a Thoroughbred mare by Close Watch. I chose her based on her own personal quality and the quality of the foal she had produced the year before. Just The Best [1991] had a successful show career with championships in Open Working Hunters, he is an Approved Stallion with the KWPN, and was the first stallion selected as a KWPN Dutch Hunter Foundation Sire.” Tish wanted a more jumper type son from Best Of Luck. “We imported Inetta specifically to produce More Than Luck [1994]. He is exactly the stallion I wanted to complete the breeding program and continue the Best of Luck and Lucky Boy heritage. Inetta is by Beach Boy out of a Rothschild (Ramiro) mare. So she carried Lucky Boy, Koridon, Zeus and Ramiro blood: a breeding treasure when crossed with Best of Luck. Inetta was named Top Dutch Star Mare in North America and scored the highest IBOP Score in North America and she is in the International Hunter Futurity Hall of Fame based on the success of her offspring. At age 27 she is retired and lives the life of the queen, an honor she has earned.”
“Best of Luck sired successful Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage horses and Event horses—well over 100 in North America. His American-bred Hunters include January’s Best, one of the most successful Hunters of the time; and Stroke of Luck, who was Green Hunter

The Bloodlines That Shone at Rio
Circle: Donnerhall Square: Courage II Triangle: Cornet Obolensky
Words by Christopher Hector Photos by Roz Neave and Dirk Caremans
The Eventers The conventional wisdom is that you can breed a dressage horse out of jumper lines but you can’t breed a jumper using dressage blood. Sönke Rothenberger’s Cosmo (Van Gogh / Landjonker) proved the first proposition decisively enough in the dressage arena, but there was an interesting development in the eventing field where a couple of dressage-bred horses shone.
Santano II
The other dressage-candidate-turned-eventer was Mathieu Lemoine’s Bart L in the gold-medal-winning French team. The black gelding is essence of Dutch Dressage—by United (who is by one of Anky van Grunsven’s Grand Prix rides, Krack C, out of a mare by another, Partout) out of a mare by Edward Gal’s Grand Prix ride, Gribaldi, out of a mare by another Trakehner, Michelangelo, that’s 36.72% blood. Cosmo
Australia’s Christopher Burton wowed them with his nine-yearold “dressage” horse, Santano II, who is by Sandro Hit out of a Brentano / Weltmeyer mare. Okay, he gets a dose of Thoroughbred from Sandro Hit’s great grandsire, Sacramento Song xx, and more on his dam’s side: Brentano was by Black Sky xx, out of a Bleep xx mare. Still, just 36.72 blood.
28
Looking at the actual entries, the horses that made it to Rio, as distinct from the earlier list of possibles, once again the stallion with the most entries—three—is the Holsteiner Courage II, by Capitol out of Vamara (Cor de la Bryère / Liguster). Vamara was the full-sister to Cavalier Royale, another Holsteiner that was for many years ranked in the top three of eventing sires on the WBFSH list. Courage II stood at Kedrah House for several seasons until his death in 2006. No other stallion has more than one representative.

Sea Lion Proven in top competition, Sea Lion is a 1998, 16.1hh, Jockey Clubregistered Thoroughbred by Sea Salute out of Ivory Today (Caveat). In July 2015, Sea Lion was approved by the American Hanoverian Society. The judges believe Sea Lion’s score may be the highest ever awarded to a thoroughbred, and confirmed their opinion by inviting the dark bay stallion to stand at stud in Germany for a season. Under owner Pam Fisher, Sea Lion competed successfully in twenty-one international eventing competitions, including fifteen at the 3* level, and was Regional Advanced Champion and USEF/ PHR National Advanced Champion. In 2013 Sea Lion retired sound from eventing to begin his breeding career - while continuing to demonstrate his versatility competing in jumpers and hunters. Sea Lion’s crowning attribute is his temperament. Owner Pam Fisher attributes her success in tough competition to Sea Lion’s “confidence-building” personality.

With half the German Silver-medal-winning team riding Selle Français—Sandra Auffarth (Opgun Louvo: Shogun II / J’T’Adore), and Julia Krejewski (Samourai du Thot: Milor Landais / Flipper d’Elle (that’s Double Espoir on both sides of the pedigree))—and of course, two of the four in the Gold-Medal French team—Piaf de b’Neville (by Cap de b’Neville, a grandson of Rantzau xx out of a mare by the Jalisco son Rêve d’Elle. That’s three crosses of the great Ibrahim), and Qing du Briot (by Eolien II out of an Etalon Or mare)—honors would seem to have gone to the French book, although it is interesting to note that half their team were “foreigners” (something that used not to be allowed): the Hanoverian stallion, Entebbe de Hus (Embassy I / Carbid), although there is a French touch on the bottom line thanks to Matcho, the French Anglo Arab that was imported to Hanover, and the aforementioned Dutchman, Bart L. Mighty Nice
Paulank Brockagh
The Selle Français were only the second most represented studbook at Rio, with seven representatives; numerical superiority went to the Irish with eleven and they ended with three of the top ten: Mighty Nice (bronze individual with Phillip Dutton, by the Dutch-bred Ard Ohio, out of an Irish mare of unknown breeding), Paulank Brockagh (just a smidge away in fourth, by the Galoubet son Touchdown, out of a Triggerero xx mare), and Cooley Rorkes Drift (Courage II out of a Rachelle Comet xx mare), ninth. Irish hmmm, one by a Dutchman, the second by a half-French stallion and the third by a Holsteiner... There were six from Holstein, four Hanoverians, and four from the German Sport Horse book; there were even four recognized as Thoroughbreds that made it to the starting line.
Dressage
32
As we might have expected in the Dressage, as the field gets smaller, the hold the D line of Donnerhall exerts on modern dressage becomes more obvious. Donnerhall himself has one son who makes it through to the Special, while his best son, De Niro, has four. Then there are individual representatives for Diamond Hit, Don Davidhoff, Don Ruto, Dimaggio and Don Schufro. The Sandro Hit contingent has shrunk to three, but that includes one of, if not the, star of the Special, Showtime FRH (Rotspon mare). The Dutch champion Jazz is down to two, and there are no more stallions with more than one representative in the field.
Warmblood Stallions of North America
•
Looking at the dam sires, the D line is again well represented. Don Schufro has two, Donnerhall and Donnerschlag, one each. The W line is represented by Weltmeyer himself with two, and one each for White Star and Wolkenstein.
hit-wonders. Sure Valegro is a super star, but his sire Negro has had every chance since he has been heavily promoted and covered many mares, yet aside from Valegro, he has produced nothing of great note. After Valegro, the next most successful Negro on the last WBFSH rankings was Nintendo ranked 69th. Again the influence of jumping blood in the successful (as distinct from the prettiest, most modern looking) dressage horse, is apparent. Valegro’s dam sire, Gershwin, is pure jump (Voltaire / Nimmerdor), and the final line is more jump than anything else. The breeding of the fourth-placed Verdades is seriously whacko. His dad is a perfectly respectable son of Florestan, Florett As, but his mum is bred to pull a cart (even if it is a fancy show buggy).
Johnson
She even has two crosses of the Hackney stallion, Cambridge Cole. I guess if you knew anything about Dutch dressage lines, you wouldn’t have gone near it—lucky Laura’s mum did.
Rotspon
The R line is represented by one each for Rubinstein, Rohdiamant, Rubin Royal, and Rotspon—who was the only R line stallion represented in the sires list with Rosevelt for the USA with Allison Brock. In terms of the studbooks, the KWPN is out in front with 9, followed by the Hanoverians with 6, the Danish Warmbloods, 4, Oldenburg, 3 and Westfalien, 2.
The KWPN book had four in the top ten individual results; besides Valegro and Verdades, there was Nip Tuck (Don Ruto / Animo) and Johnson ( Jazz / Flemmingh), with a couple more just out of the ten: Legolas (Laemedon / Florestan II) in 11th, and Arlando (Paddox / Mytens xx) 12th.
Continued on following page
When we look at the top ten placings in the Special, the D dominance is more complete: the winner Weihegold is by Don Schufro out of a Sandro Hit mare, Desperados in 4th is by De Niro out of a Wolkenstein II mare, while Don Aurelio is by the Donnerhall grandson Don Davidhoff out of a mare by the Weltmeyer son White Star. Delgado in 8th is by De Niro out of a Weltmeyer mare. In the Individual final results, I guess we see two things. One is if you want go with the stats, think Donnerhall. With 50% of the top ten from the D line, that’s where you might look if you want a Grand Prix horse. The other is to beware of one-
Legolas

Cornet Obolensky
Showjumping Looking at the start list, the KWPN leads the field with 17 followed by the Belgian BWP book with 12. There are 10 Selle Français, and six each from the other Belgian book, sBs, and Holstein (although as usual, the progeny registered with the other books are rich in Holstein blood). There are five Westfaliens, and four each from Hannover and Zangersheide, with three from the Oldenburg jumping book. The sire stars of these Games are For Pleasure and Cornet Obolensky. Cornet has five: Cornetto K (Calido), Cannavaro 9 (Florestan I), Clooney (Ferragamo), Cornet 36 (Ars Vivendi), Cornet du Lys (Champion du Lys). For Pleasure has two of his own, Fit for Fun (Fabriano) and Barron (Nabab de Rêve), and three of his sons are represented: For Keeps, For Feeling and Forsyth, the sire of the leading horse going into the individual final, Eric Lamaze’s Hanoverian mare, Fine Lady (out of a Drosselklang / Grannus mare). Fine Lady finished the go rounds with zero penalties. Kashmir van’t Schuttershof has two, but they are both in the top ten: All In (out of an Andiamo mare, just one penalty) and Reveur de Hurtebise (Capricieux des Six Censes) with 4 penalties. The third horse on just one penalty is the Nijhof stallion, Verdi (Quidam de Revel / Landgraf ). Kannan has three: the stallion

Quorida de Treho (Tolbiac des Forets), Quabri de l’Isle (Socrate de Chivre) and London star Nino des Buissonnets (Narcos II). At the London Games, Quick Star was well represented with two sons, Big Star and Star Power, and a grandson, Castlefield Eclipse, into the individual round. At Rio, he had only one representative, but what a horse! Nick Skelton’s Big Star, coming back from injury, went first in an unprecedented six horse jump off, jumped fast and clear to hold the lead right to the end. The six in the jump off more or less represented the breeding trends at Rio. Peder Fredericson’s silver medalist, All In, is by Kashmir van t’Schuttershof, who has been a bit of a sire star all show. Unfortunately Kashmir went infertile five years ago, but his

breeder, Willy van Impe, still has a small quantity of his frozen semen. Eric Lamaze on Fine Lady was faster than Nick and Big Star, but they had a rail and had to settle for bronze. Still it underlines the influence that For Pleasure is having in modern Sport Horse breeding. Steve Guerdat’s Nino des Buissonets had the first fence, but that won’t stop the stampede of breeders using Kannan, and the Brazilian stallion, Quabri de l’Isle proved that you can fluke a pretty one. First Devision, ridden by Sheik Ali Al Thani of Qatar, had no rails all week going into the jump off, but put two down in the final. He is by Andiamo, a grand son of Almé out of an Anglo Arab mare, out of a grand daughter of Atlanta Gold Medalist Jus de Pomme. American Kent Farrington at his first Games, on Voyeur, also made the jump off. Voyeur is by the less-than-famous Tolano van’t Reithhof, who is by Chin Chin and out of a Landgraf grand daughter. That’s the breeding at Rio, no surprises, but super sport.

Conformation
and the Sport Horse
by Christopher Hector Recently in the KWPN Magazine (Issue 2, Volume 1), Inez Kampman has dissected one of the most sophisticated systems of conformational analysis: the Dutch system. Senior inspector Ine van Deuzen explains: “For each horse in the studbook inspection, the jury describes twenty-one conformation traits which have a demonstrated functional relationship with sport performance. These traits don’t just come out of the blue, but actually have a relationship with the manner in which the ultimate sporthorse moves and jumps. “The inspection standard for dressage horses states: The envisioned KWPN dressage horse has rectangular-shaped conformation, is long-lined and proportionally built, has an uphill body and is long-legged.”
On the Dutch linear score form, each conformation trait has two extremes. Take the length of the neck: “while long lines ensure flexibility and elasticity they can compromise power. Similarly a neck which is too long leads to imbalance. This principle applies to the other traits as well. In other words, a score for a trait which falls outside the average is not necessarily desirable.” The KWPN jury looks first of all at body type and here they make a distinction between the idea type for dressage and what is best for jumping: “In the past, a short compact horse was desirable as this body type was suited for pulling a wagon over deep clay soil. For the modern sporthorse, however, a longer back is more beneficial as it gives a horse more elasticity and athletic ability, which allows it to turn, collect and jump more easily. For these reasons, the KWPN strives for a rectangular type in all its breeding directions.
The length of a horse’s neck is important. Riders tend to like a longer neck that gives a better feeling of control and steering than a short neck. Arnaud Evain points out: “Colonel Deroches, Emeritus rider, said about the neck, that the way in which a horse uses it is more important than its length or orientation. We must respect the opinion of this horseman, but so far as possible – avoid extremes.”
The shoulder position is the angle the shoulder blade forms with the horizontal axis. The shoulder can range from sloped to moderate to straight. Once again, Arnaud offers his insight: “Between the small shoulder of the Landgraf progeny to the powerful shoulder of the heirs of Ibrahim, this is a decision the breeder must appreciate and choose.”

Most people who have been around horses for any period of time tend to share a vision of what “good” conformation should be. My question is—given that so many jumping and dressage horses, even eventers, can be hugely successful even with “bad” conformation—how useful is conformation as a guide to later success?
“With respect to body direction (upward versus downward) the ideal body direction for a dressage horse is upward, while a more horizontal body is better for a show jumper. An upward body direction is advantageous in a dressage horse, as the goal in the discipline is developing an elevated forehand and a hind leg which steps powerfully under the body. To that end, an upward body direction makes achieving that goal easier. Although a show
jumper also benefits from equal weight distribution over four legs when collecting, shortening and lengthening between obstacles, an upward body direction can curtail its ability to bascule over an obstacle. When a horse bascules, he rounds the body, lowers the neck and jumps with an elevated wither, all of which are essential for optimum body use.”

For Pleasure
Now that’s upwards: Valegro
Okay, so let’s have a look at arguably the greatest dressage horse ever: Valegro. As you can see he certainly has that upward tendency, and a nicely sloped shoulder. Although it might be noted in passing that the KWPN stallion commission rejected him as a breeding prospect…
head: 81 (odd since he was quite a cute guy), and a very negative value for the neck: 77. There is even a negative correlation between saddle position and jumping ability, as these mare evaluation tests would seem to bear out: the mares produce a score of 92 for saddle position and 92 for frame. Breed and sex type rated 89.
But let’s look at arguably the most successful jumping horse stallion in the world today – For Pleasure. For Pleasure doesn’t conform to the KWPN thinking that the jumper should be horizontal. He’s a short horse with quite an upward tendency. In fact, For Pleasure is seemingly one of those jumpers that startled the Hanoverian breeding authorities when they discovered that the better the jumper, the worse the conformation score. And what is more, For Pleasure’s offspring have the same undesirable conformational traits, they just happen to be super jumpers. If we look at the 2015 Hanoverian Stallion Book, we find that when the mares by For Pleasure were evaluated, they had a negative value for type: 84 (100 is the mean. Above 100 indicated good; below 100 indicated bad). There is even a negative for the
Stakkato, just 66 for “type.”
And yet, when the results of these mare tests were added to the results of the auction inspections, For Pleasure has a wonderful index of 152 for jumping, 148 for technique, and 154 for scope. You can find the same result over and over again: Stakkato: jumping index: 153, score for type: 66 Balou du Rouet: jumping: 149, type: 92 In fact, of the 33 jumping sires on the Hanoverian standings with a jumping value of 120 or more, 17 have a negative score for type. I asked my friend Dr. Ludwig Christmann, who was the person who originally discovered the negative correlation between conformation and jumping ability, if any further study had been done, or perhaps an attempt to revise conformation values for jumpers. Ludwig’s response is, as always, worth thinking about:
They may not win mare conformation classes, but they can jump: Barron at Rio.

Dear Chris, You are very good in asking simple questions, which are not so easy to answer. There was no follow up to my study in Germany, so it is

difficult to answer your question on a scientific base. Correlations now would be different as our population has developed over the last 20 years. From experience there are a few conformation issues, where I would say, this is ok for a jumping horse, but not for a dressage horse, for example lower set necks, a more downhill build, a flatter croup or a bit more roached in the loin, but I still do not think that you can predict jumping ability just from conformation.
With regards to the Grand Prix dressage horse versus the young horse super star, I do see a development. When you look at the horses at the Olympics then you see more and more elegant dressage horses, for example in the German team. Desperados, Showtime and Weihegold were very successful young horses and had a straight career towards Grand Prix. But you still have some stockier types like Nip Tuck, who also does the job. What does this tell us? A horse does not have to be a beauty to be a successful Grand Prix horse, but it can. Thoughts From the PAX System French breeding expert Arnaud Evain has developed a system he calls PAX, to help mare owners choose the best match for their mare among his stallions. This is an excerpt from “Breeding Insights with Arnaud Evain,” written by Christopher Hector and published in 2016 on horsemagazine. com. To read the entire article, visit http://www.horsemagazine.com/ thm/2016/09/breeding-insightswith-arnaud-evain/ . To use the PAX system, the mare owner must assess his mare on each of the 23 criteria, and the book helps in this process of evaluation. For example, Chapter 1 is headed ‘Geometry’, with diagrams to help identify if your mare is: square – squarish – somewhat rectangular – rectangular. Arnaud is quick to point out: “It must be emphasized that the functional significance of a morphological feature is in interaction with other features. It is impossible to predict the jumping ability by simply looking at the silhouette.”
“Apart from the amount of muscle and tone, the flexibility and the natural balance of gaits, the shape and size of the shoulder and croup, and jumping technique, are the parameters that interfere the most with the silhouette to produce expected results.” “Note that all outlines are found in the Grand Prix paddock, from the square Jappeloup to the horizontal Touch of Class, an uphill Milton to a rather downhill, Electra.” And so it goes. Having assessed the physical attributes of the mare: head, neck, shoulder, withers, upper line, croup, fore legs, hind legs, fetlocks, feet, bones & joints, size and lines, we move on to: walk, trot and gallop. Once again, we find snippets from Arnaud like: “For the jumpers, the symmetry and balance of the trot are better than the magnitude and even the suppleness.”
Arnaud evaluates the mare, Classic Touch: Slightly rectangular, uphill, horizontal short neck, slightly hollow shoulder, straight back, slightly straight hocks, medium bones and strong joints. If she moves stiffly, balance will Or on the all important canter: “The be a problem because of the neck orientation but if she has enough looseness and power in suppler and the more balanced the the limbs, the combination with straight hocks and straight back will match well! canter is, the easier it is to vary the
“A long silhouette is a plus for a flexible horse and becomes a disadvantage if he is stiff ! An uphill horse is an advantage if it has a powerful hindquarters and disadvantage otherwise!” “We see that the work will play a key rôle in the functionality of the silhouette. We do not work the same way with a strongly rectangular horse as we do an extremely square horse, or work an uphill horse like a downhill horse.”
stride’s length during the course and the easier it is to get the engagement of the hindquarter for take off at the time of the jump.”
“The longer the canter stride will be, the broader the trajectory, and more it will facilitate the rider’s option to remove a stride between the fences… The longer the stride, the more delicate it will be to handle for the rider, but the more it will allow the combination to reach the higher level.”

Galuta “An enormously nice type of Holsteiner stallion that increased his presence at every performance. The classical presence of this Connor son since his first selection has taken an incredibly positive development so the he presented himself as a perfect type. The correct conformation gives him a beautiful physical appearance. His movement shows the suppleness of his gaits and his good interior. The walk is exceptional, the trot and canter show great elasticity and the stallion shows a natural talent over the jumps. He responds with great confidence around his environment and confirmed the quality of his mare stamm 569. Breed for Rideability! Figaro R won first place at the Hanoverian Stallion Licensing in Verden 2003. In 2005, he was then Champion of the Swedish Warmblood Stallion Approvals in Flyinge with the highest dressage index ever and perfect scores of 10 for rideability from two German test riders, Hella Kuntz and Heiner Sudowe, whose comments were: “Gives a very good feeling in all three gaits. Very attentive to the aids and perfect contact with the mouth. Nice horse to train!” and “Very good to ride, well trained horse. Three good and easy gaits. Good increases where the horse will go forward from behind.” Figaro was schooled by Rose Mathisen and has placings in Prix St. Georges before an injury discontinued his show career.

Figaro has over 432 offspring in Sweden, with over 100 in competition, including an approved stallion son, Faustino, and grandson, Raymore ridden by Jan Brink. Faustino and his full sister Barcelona both returned to Verden and were finalists in the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses. In 2015, another son returned to Verden for WBCYH. Figaro was awarded “Premium A” status due to his heritability for dressage talent being clearly above average. In Sweden, Figaro was the Breeder’s Trophy Stallion of the Year in dressage in both 2011 and 2012. His approved son, Faustino 1244, was winner of the Breeder’s Trophy Final, first as 4 yr old and then in 2012 as a 5 yr old and was first place at the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses trial at Flyinge with a score of 79.2. Figaro’s daughter, Barcelona, was the winner of the Breeder’s Trophy final for 6 yr olds in 2012 and also a finalist in the Young Horse Championships. In 2013, she placed fourth in 7 year olds at Falsterbo. Figaro’s first foal crop in the USA in 2016 included Top Colt at the Hanoverian Inspection and First Premium foal at the Swedish Inspection. 75% of all offspring were rated Class I by Swedish judges. Figaro is incredibly prepotent regarding temperament and disposition. Even bred to the “toughest” mares, his offspring all inherit his kind, gentle temperament and amazing ability to want to please their riders. Figaro is a world class breeding stallion and a world class family horse as well. Now sound after his injury, he is a schoolmaster for myself and my teenage daughter and is very forgiving. Our instructor from Sweden states: “It is amazing to find such a high quality stallion as Figaro here in this arena. He is a top breeding stallion and I have now seen firsthand that his temperament is super! He is very attentive to and tries hard to please his rider, even now in breeding season.” - Ann Clemedtson, dressage judge, Sweden. You will not be disappointed in a foal by Figaro!

At his 70-Day Stallion Test, Rubinero finished 2nd in the dressage phase with a score of 140+ points, and finished in 3rd place overall. His character and rideability were highlights, earning him perfect 10s. Rubinero qualified for the Bundeschampionat, was Reserve Champion at Rastede, and quickly moved up to the Advanced levels. Imported to the US in 2013, Rubinero continued his winning ways with his amateur owner, earning scores as high as 72.5% at Intermediaire I. He was the USDF Region 3 Champion at Intermediaire and Reserve Champion at Prix St. Georges.

Faola
His sire, Rubinstein, has over 90 approved sons, more than 170 States Premium daughters, and his offspring have won over 2.5 Million Euro in competition. Rubinero’s dam, Faola, passed her Mare Performance Test with an overall score of 8.36, receiving a 9.0 for her willingness to perform, her canter, rideability, free jumping technique and a 10.0 for free jumping ability. Her sire, Ex Libris, sired both jumpers and dressage horses. From Rubinero’s foal crops in Germany we saw many Premium Foals, one licensed stallion, States Premium Mares, and numerous successful performance horses. From young horse classes through the FEI levels, Rubinero offspring show their trainability and talent. These qualities, combined with the jumping ability from his dam, also translates well to the hunter ring. Rubinero offers much for sport horse breeders to appreciate.

Until 2008, this magnificent son of Stakkato stood at the Landgestüt State Stud in Celle, Germany. Salito is the only son of Stakkato standing at stud in North America. Salito was approved in 2004. At Salito’s performance test at Adelheidsdorf in 2004 he was awarded first place in the jumping category out of 42 stallions in his year. Points given were 8 for character, 8 for willingness, 8 for conformation, 7 and 7.67 for rideability, 6 for trot, 7 and 6 for canter, 6 for walk, 9.17 for free jumping, 9.33 for jumping manner, 9 for jumping technique and 9 for cross country. Salito was the 2006 Hannoverian Jumping Champion in Dobrock and continued to impress with admirable results in both the 2006 and 2007 Bundeschampionat. This Hannoverian Jumping Champion of 2006 and winner of countless show jumping competitions in Germany stood at the Landgestut State Stud in Celle. Salito competed to 1.45m with Kevin Martsch. German breeders were impressed by his offspring as winners of free jumping championships and mare performance tests. So far his youngsters display his kind disposition and incredibly balanced movement.
His great grand dam Wilma (by Moltke I) produced the 1.45m horse Carlsberg (by Capitol( ridden by Dirk Baudach. From this dam line the following international jumping horses were produced: Athena (by Ahorn Z) 1.45m with Tom Camerlynck; Escape (by Chin Chin) 1.55m with Perry Geryl: Udam (by Guidam) 1.60m with Jill Blunt; and Greece (by Carolus II) 1.40m with Rafael Amaral Rodrigues.
