SOL Clean Cooking, Healthy Living
PROJECT OVERVIEW This project was a Year-long two-course sequence on Sustainable Product and Market Development for Subsistence Marketplaces at the University of Illinois. The main goal was to develop a product that could be both useful and affordable for the Indian subsistence market and involved a trip to India to do field research through observation and interviews. The team is comprised of people from different backgrounds from design, business, and engineering. The project ended with a presentation pitch to investors.
18
PROBLEM STATEMENT WHAT
: Create a solar cooking program that replaces traditional cooking fuels to improve quality of life to those living in subsistence
WHY
: The use of traditional cooking fuels such as wood and coal is still prominent in subsistence living in India. Furthermore than being hazardous to their health and environment, obtaining the fuel can be an expensive, dangerous, and time-consuming. we hope to reduce these negative impacts through solar cooking
HOW
: Examine potential possibilities with current solar cooking technology and conduct a field research to India
Household air pollution is the third leading cause of death
86.5% of people living in rural communities burn biomass fuel
